West Brom could face competition from West Ham in the battle to land former Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou.

The Baggies are weighing up a £3million bid to bring the 27-year-old back to the Premier League from French club Lille.

But Hawthorns head coach Steve Clarke could face two potential obstacles to completing a deal – the player's wage demands and rival interest from Upton Park.

The Hammers are long-time admirers of the Ivory Coast international and are believed to be ready to revive their interest.

And that could drive up Kalou's wages to a level that deters the West Brom hierarchy.

Kalou has three years remaining on his Lille contract but negotiated a release clause when he joined the French side on a free transfer last summer – meaning he could be available for as little as £3million.

But he is believed to earn up to £70,000 a week in France and, while he would consider a pay cut to return to the Premier League, wages could still be a stumbling block for the Baggies.

West Brom officials are expected to meet with the agents of Nicolas Anelka and Matej Vydra in the next week to discuss the pair.

Both remain high on the Baggies' summer transfer hit-list, with Anelka a free agent and Vydra available on loan.

West Brom will hope to clarify their options before Clarke's players report back for pre-season training next Monday.

They will fly to Austria for an eight-day training camp on July 15 and captain Chris Brunt is hoping for better fortunes this summer after a pre-season calf injury a year ago left him playing catch-up.

He said: "My main aim this year is to come back and get a full pre-season under my belt because, if you don't, it can affect you in the long run over the course of the season.

"Without missing a lot of football, I missed a lot of training in pre-season last year and I didn't get to play as many games at the start of the season as I would have liked.

"Generally, last season I had a few niggles and missed a few games towards the end of the season as well.

"That sort of summed up my season really and my form suffered because of it. I haven't been used to that in my career.

"Hopefully, this year, I will get a full pre-season under my belt and I'll be fit and ready to go come August 17."
