The England under-21 international made his return to Baggies colours after three months on loan at Bolton with an impressive display in Tuesday's 1-0 defeat at Manchester City.

And the former Rochdale stopper hopes to use Sunday's game at Carrow Road and the clash with Manchester United seven days later as a launchpad for a challenge for a first-team spot.

But he admitted he faces a battle to get ahead of Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson who, despite the Swede's dip in form in the second half of the season, have formed an impressive pairing.

Dawson, who played at the heart of a new-look back three at the Etihad Stadium, said: "Gareth and Jonas have been top-drawer.

"They have worked hard, put in the effort, and it's shown on the pitch. So I've just got to keep working hard on the training pitch and show what I can do.

"I want to play as many games as I can. I've just got to keep pushing in training. Hopefully I can play the next couple of games and put a marker down for next season.

"It was great to have Jonas and Gabi Tamas next to me on Tuesday. They have experience and I think we played the system quite well.

"We've got a strong squad and everyone has been knocking on the door for a chance."

After helping Bolton climb from a possible relegation fight to almost reach the Championship play-offs, Dawson found himself up against Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko.

And he admitted he relished the challenge of facing the cream of the top flight.

He said: "They were champions last season and I knew it was going to be a tough game. I found out a few days ago I would be starting.

"In training, we have been working on the shape and the patterns of play. It was nice to play 90 minutes."
