Shane Long is planning to stay at West Brom

West Brom striker Shane Long has no plans to leave the club in the summer despite Hoffenheim and Schalke joining the list of sides interested in the player.

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - West Bromwich Albion v Newcastle United - The Hawthorns

The top German pair have joined the likes of Lazio and Sevilla in a pack of sides across Europe keeping tabs on the 26-year-old, whose contract talks with the Baggies have yet to yield an agreement.

But the Express & Star understands Long has no intention of seeking a move this summer, even if the Republic of Ireland international does not strike a deal to extend his stay.

The former Reading man will enter the final year of his current contract in the summer, although the deal includes an option to extend his stay for another year.

Albion sporting and technical director Richard Garlick flew to Ireland earlier this month for talks with Long’s representatives, but the parties are still believed to be some way apart on the terms of an extension.

However, Long, who wants to stay at the Hawthorns in the longer term, has no plans to look for a move before the end of his contract despite the Bundesliga pair becoming the latest clubs to show some interest.

He is likely to start next season at The Hawthorns, although the Baggies still face a summer of uncertainty over their forward line, with Marc-Antoine Fortune out of contract and Markus Rosenberg’s future in doubt.

Peter Odemwingie also seems likely to leave following his January bust-up. And boss Steve Clarke has admitted his plans will be influenced heavily by which players leave.

He said: "In an ideal world it will be fine-tuning to the squad,” he said. “But you don’t know what is going to happen in the summer.

“There may be some players hiding some feelings that they want to move on and some players that other clubs are going to take off you and unsettle as happened to us in January.

"Ideally, I think three or four players added to that squad will keep us moving in the right direction.”

Rushall Baggie

I dislike being critical of any WBA player, but can anyone tell me what Marcus (whose 'future is in doubt' according to this story) brings? I've seen a couple of full performances and plenty of substitutions - not as short as Saturday, I admit, which is something of a record - and am baffled. He became our Jonah at Reading and gave away three daft free kicks at Everton during a key ten minutes when we were putting on the pressure at 2-1 down, allowing them to slow things down and become comfortable again. He's a senior player. Is he lacking in confidence? Unfit? Unhappy? Perhaps I'm missing something?

Bingbong

No mystery mate-he's rubbish ,end of.

East Stand Baggie

I think people are being hard on rosenberg, he hasnt really had a chance, when ever he has played its been out of position and for a small amount of time. He cant be rubbush because he's done well everywhere else hes been. This saga reminds me of the valero transfur, the amount of people that moaned about him being rubbish was beyond belief and now look at him. we got to give these guys a chance and a run in the team, the seasons over for us so lets stick him in the side for southampton and wigan replacing lukaku (whos not going to be here next season) and try and form a partnership between him and long, he does prefer to play behind a partner striker.

Shane Long's the Kevin Doyle of Wolves, all huff and puff and tumble down

That may be the view of him from The Molineux, but the reality is very, very different.

Takk,

'Jack's Friend' is either 'Baggieboy' or 'Realist', could be either as they have the same things in common-

they're both obsessed with the Baggies, they both attack JtH, they both use several different names on here, neither one would win 'Mastermind'-

Comparing Shane Long to Kevin Doyle is like comparing a top-level Premier League striker to a player two leagues or two levels lower - there again, I guess that's where Doyle and the other dingle 'misfits' will be plying their trade next season.

Long is a class above.

Baggies and Bathams...the Black Country wy

Davo from Wordsley

Looking above at SC's comment about 3 or 4 players will keep them in the right direction. I think he needs to count again. In my opinion we need, before anyone leaves, the following:-

2 full backs, a centre half, an attacking midfielder and a centre forward. Thats 5, then we have to consider those who leave.

Expensive summer for Mr Peace, or it will be back to looking over our shoulder again.

Tipton

Good grafter and good player when he is fully fit but he reminds me of Kevin Doyle, huffs and puffs but doesn't score enough goals, lacks technical ability and goes down too easily too

Takk

Ha ha - Tipto (Jack's friend's friend).

The "lacks technical ability" bit gives you away. As does the likening him to Doyle at Wolves.

They're a world apart, mate.

Tipton

Yes he is just a fast Kevin Doyle, and yes he does lack technical ability when was the last time you saw him dribble past as man? or the last time he scored from further than the 6 yard box?

The Real Bully Hoo.

You could have said exactly the same about Gary Lineker in his pomp.

Your knowledge of technical ability obviously outweighs the people at Hoffenheim. Schalke etc.

Brierleyhillbaggie

Shane long is way faster than that donkey from the dark side ask that donkey in defence how quick he is and I know you could take any defender from that description but I'm on about Johnson I remember the way he flew past him at the hawthorns last season haha. I do agree he ain't the best finisher in the world but his pace is frightening and I'd have him rather than Doyle who really is useless

Hope jp spends the extra money we get this year on a few good players. Not saying break the bank or anything but if we're getting 30 mill extra why not spend a little bit on a couple of quality strikers just a thought

Jack ♣ Hat.

The difference between Long and Doyle is Long is in the Premiership whilst Doyle is nearly in division one if he stays where he is. So the two are incomparable. L☺Ls.

I SAID

Steve Clarke > He said: "In an ideal world it will be fine-tuning to the squad,” he said. “But you don’t know what is going to happen in the summer.

But the last but one paragraph, beggars belief, Steve, keep those thoughts to yourself. Thats what i call an unsettling confidence booster.

Steve Clarke with regard to personnel coming and going will work hand in glove no doubt with R Garlick, but this article suggests to me that his finger is'nt quite on the pulse. I acknowledge that both men will be feeling their way, in their new roles.

Cyril Randle

Isaid, yes, maybe S.C. should keep such ponderings to himself and will learn to if he does stay, but how about this from the old 'Arry himself talking about Odemwingie ?

“He might have scored four or five goals that make the difference. He made one big mistake. He was too honest, he turned up at the football club, he was silly.”

Now that really takes the biscuit. QPR as good as relegated, (not my fault says 'Arry), I told Odemwingie I wanted him and maybe, just maybe, should have made more effort, but not my fault he's silly and believed me says 'Arry.

Yet still he makes good paper-filling column and is well loved in Landan.

I SAID

Cyril Randle yes that does take the biscuit.

Arry contributed big time to the Odemwingie fiasco, and in ruffling WBA FC's feathers, hopefully this will have blotted his copy book.

Cyril, i can cope with Arry, it's the other former QPR jerk that gets up my nose Rodney Marsh. When he was on the Saturday Sky live panel, he blatantly got away with taking the pi-- out of the Albion with every conceivable opportunity.

Cyril Randle

Isaid, well they did beat us at Wembley 3-2 in 1967 after being 2 down at half time and dear old Rodney did get his head stuck in the goal posts with all the praise. Who's on that panel we could get to remind him they're going down and we are on the up ?

Roy Doran

If Shane Long had started the game on Saturday against Newcastle I think that we would have won. He always gives 100% he is quick and constantly puts the opposion defenders under pressure. I would like to see him used along side Lukaku in a 442 formation especially when we play at home. I think that Steve Clarke got his team selection wrong on Saturday why he played Marco and left Shane on the bench beats me?

As for next season, as a minimum we need at least two quality forwards, a full back (not sure about Popov he needs more games) a quality mid field player who can score goals and I would also like to see a tricky winger who can beat a player and put over a decent cross. With our long term injured mid field players back to fitness and the return of Dawson as cover in the middle of the back four together with a few new quality signings we could push on again next season.

Over to you Mr Chairman, but please remember it's quality that counts in the Premiership!

COYB go for it!!

CantelloRocket 78

Re: Shane Long-

Reading loved him to bits, they tried desperately to keep him, but he wanted Premiership football with the Baggies-

earlier in the season, he was our top player, scoring goals and turning defences inside out, until he hit an unfortunate run of injuries-

several leading European clubs are expressing interest in him, and Albion are carrying out extensive talks to extend his contract so he doesn't leave us.

Why bother?

Several people have said recently he just ain't gud enough, so let him leave on the cheap in the summer, he's obviously useless, and these top division football clubs, with their multi-million pound turn-overs, and extensive professional scouting systems, have got no idea just how bad he is-

I know, because me next door neighbour told me as much over the garden fence the other day......

CR78 We are being grossly unfair to 'Arry, me included. This is a man who, by his own admission, can barely read and write. It's not his fault he relegates clubs, it's the bad players bought before he got there. Too many foreigners who don't understand Cockney English don't play to instructions and get in the wrong positions on the field after reading his team sheet pinned up in the dressing room. I'm rather hoping to get an invite to his huge mansion in Bournemouth if I plead his case for leniency and I might get to pat his rich dog who has his own bank account.

I like shane long he gives his all and plays for the team but he needs to work on his striking tally i think hes better than the amount of goals he has scored this season in the summer we are gunna lose odemwingie which aint a problem dont want a self centred player who thinks hes better than he is, plus lukaku cant see him staying really can see tottenham going for him and that leaves us with long and fortune they give there all but wont keep us up i feel if we get a good offer around the 8 -1 0 million mark id let him go, we need to build on the squad we have a the moment as we have a good basis and would also like to see dorrans stay as i feel he is a good CM for us when he plays.

Would like to see Clarkey use his name in the game and raid you Real madrids and chelseas again to get some good young talent on loan to push us on for next season plus add at least one high profile signing.

We're any of these ani-Long fans at the game on saturday? His second half impact totally changed the game. And try not to forget that during our fantastic start to the season it was mostly Long not Lukaku who lead our line. No question he should score more but he's one of our most pized assets in my opinion, particulary with every other senior forward on our books uncertain of being at the club next year.

Chris

He is quality, was in great form before he picked up a few injuries, hope he can rest through the summer and get back to where he was.

The Irish manager must not pick him and play him for 90 minutes when he is carrying knocks. He needs time to recover fully.

He is a real terror for premier league defences with his pressing style, and he does not get enough creit for it.

Stroller

I would like to see Jerome Thomas and PO at Albion next season. They are both class players and would be difficult to replace.

Shame PO lost it in January but he has made a big contribution to Albion.

B71

I AGRREE with pete o mate. but jerome thomas if we cant get a better wide player than him next year questions have got to be asked

why not get the young lad from leeds (right back) and let billy the kid get more advanced?? just a thought

CantelloRocket 78

Stroller,

Believe me, I would ALSO like to see JT and P.O. at Albion next season, but Jerome would need to recapture his very best form, and Pete would need to locate his brain, which is some distance from his body, then issue a very lengthy, grovelling apology.

Sadly, I have serious doubts about both.........

Cyril Randle

Stroller, you're more forgiving than most to say the least. The performances we are seeing are somewhat bewildered and it's very possible that the P.O. saga contributed heavily to what we are getting right now. The only good thing to come out of the sorry mess is that the man who caused it, the Old 'Arry, is about to get his comeuppance.

Loadsa Money .....

..... At the Baggies disposal, we've never had so good.

If i program my head to think positively, knowing that SC is at the helm, we can only 'buy good'.

Onwards and upwards, progressing nicely, moving in the right direction and other inuendo suggest SC plus loadsa money, should, again consolidate our standing in the premier league next season. In affect this is what the staunch Baggies are saying, but i'm findind myself treading water and becoming more of a sceptic. I wonder how the posts will read ten games into the start of next season ?

Shane Long is a young top player (proven in this division), he must remain a Baggies player (squad player), he might not be automatic first choice every game but he is a gem.

COYB ©

Jack ♣ Hat.

'The Class of 68',

Agree mate, Long is a good impact plus, player.

BOING~~~~BOING~~~~J♣H.

AMS

I'm really bemused by all the criticism of Long. His pace is as good as any we could expect to replace him with and his 'technical ability' is better than most. 6 yard poachers are players that read the game well and react fast to the action around them finding space and anticipating the ball being placed in those danger zones. He's not been fully fit this season and the clubs response has been to use him sparingly. I'd only sell him if there is doubt over his ability to recover fully from those injuries.

We surely have enough to ponder losing Odemwingie and Lukaku potentially; without casting Shane aside. The interesting view this summer is can we still compete when the window finally closes. Stoke and Villa and Sunderland have spent a lot more than JP and DA over the last 2 seasons but that hasn't bought them any more security at this level. I don't care about 'Marquee' signings:- I'd rather see a team; albeit with quality as well; that all happily pull together and for each other when Saturday comes. I believe it is that, along with a shrewd scouting and recruitment system, which has helped us to achieve so well thus far.

TB

It's difficult to criticise Shane Long because of the work he puts in. His hustle and bustle helped add the impetus and energy that was missing in the first half on Saturday. However, it must be said that he isn't a natural footballer; his ball control and finishing are very poor. He needs a run of games (and to be injury free) to bring this up to the standard of the Prem. In spite of his work rate, he hasn't had the best second half to the season. His confidence seems low and he's less direct than he was at the start of the season (when he was one of our best players). Hopefully, he can get a good rest over the summer and hit the ground running next year. We need the Shane Long of the first 10 games back asap

AndyH

Morning all,

Shane Long is planning to stay at the Albion.....good!!! end of story.......next please..... and don;t the club have an option in our favour anyway???

Robin Brittain

When Roy Hodgson brought Shane Long to the club he was terrific. Unfortunately he was the victim of an horrendous tackle by Alan Hutton at Villa Park and since then he has not really recovered and has picked up one injury after another. It's easy to be critical of players but we don't really know the long term effects of these injuries but he is only young and hopefully will return to his best.

James Morrison is another who has been plagued with injuries and seems to have constant problems with his hamstrings which has reduced his early season performance levels.

Not easy trying to plan in football.

Baggie Heaven

Robin Brittain

Never mind physios, do clubs today have their own Doctors ?

I here what you say about the Hutton tackle, someone else also mentioned the same. I don't hold with that analogy.

Pullis of Stoke said last week, Peter Crouch has under performed since Christmas, this being due to having some teeth knocked out in a collision with another player. I can't go along with this train of thought, but i acknowledge it takes all sorts.

If it were the case SC should'nt play him in the first team, not in the Premiership, there is to much at stake.

Afternoon all,

i've got to admit i'm a little perplexed by the anti Long brigade......he's not good enough.....always injured........etc etc blah blah blah. He comes on from the bench and makes an impact...great! when he starts he plays well and was scoring goals until injured, with a full pre season and good luck for once he'll do us well. I find it a little annoying and it saps the spirit when all he gets from some "supporters" is constant knocking. What does that serve?? I'm not after a row as everyone has an opinion and can vent as they will but he's our player and, at the moment, we need him. PO will be gone in the summer, MR needs games but whilst there's 8th place to cement (and the money that comes with it) that might not happen so we need to get behind Long whenever and how ever he plays. SC has over 30 years in football......lets trust that he knows what he's doing. If Long plays like he did a the start of the season and stays injury free...what a player!!
