Dan Ashworth today hinted Albion could keep key defender Jonas Olsson for next season even if he ends up leaving for free.

The Baggies are planning talks with the Sweden international over a contract extension with his current deal due to expire next summer.

Olsson is reluctant to let his contract run out and leave The Hawthorns on a free transfer in a year's time.

But sporting and technical director Ashworth says the Baggies will consider keeping the 29-year-old, even if he fails to reach an agreement on a new contract.

"There wasn't a huge outlay on a transfer fee so we don't need to make a huge amount of money back if we decided to run the contract down," said Ashworth.

"We would have to weigh it up and decide whether there is a transfer offer that meets the value of getting a replacement.

"It's a difficult one to answer because we haven't had any offers and I don't want to sell him."

But Ashworth does not believe that situation would affect the Swede's commitment to the Albion cause, adding:?"He's a very professional serious man."
