Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Paul Scharner warned not to get shirty
Monday 6th February 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Albion star Paul Scharner will face an FA rap if he shows off his famous Baggies T-shirt in Sunday’s Black Country derby.
FA bosses have written to the player warning him not to display the shirt that upset Wolves boss Mick McCarthy in Albion’s 2-0 Hawthorns derby win in October.
The T-shirt, designed by Scharner’s sons, also riled Wolves players and fans – but 600 copies have since been sold to Baggies fans, raising £4,500 for an Austrian children’s charity.
“I already had a warning from the FA so it’s very risky to do it again,” confirmed the Austria international.
The letter came shortly after the Hawthorns game, during which Scharner flashed the shirt towards Wolves winger Stephen Hunt, upsetting the Irishman and prompting a reaction from McCarthy.
But the Wolves boss relaxed after discovering the shirt merely displayed an Albion logo.
The Austria international returned as a substitute on Saturday after an Achilles problem but could not prevent the Baggies sliding to a 2-1 home defeat to Swansea.
Fans booed the side – and Scharner doesn’t blame them. “The weather was terrible – it was freezing – and the supporters are awaiting a win from us,” he said.

Don’t know what all the fuss is about! It’s not derogatory or inflammatory it is just the Baggies crest! If we are unfortunate enough to see him net on Sunday then best of luck to him, nice to see a player proud of the club he represents! We should be more focussed on stopping him getting the opportunity to show it off!

Regarding your post @59 on the West Brom-Swansea thread, I was very dissapointed to read your rather churlish remark that I should be appointed as manager.
If you go back and read my post @ 41 you will see that I have in no way offered any advise on team tactics, formation, or any short comings that Roy may or may not have! And this, such a cheap shot from a man who I regard as generally fair minded, balanced and respectful in his views.
I do hope that normal service will be resumed as soon as possible.
Take care my friend. Boing Boing

This is the first time I’ve been able to comment on the match as both match threads have been closed. Very disappointed with the performance of the team, with the possible exception of Fortune and Tchoyi who should have started in place of Odemwingie. Odemwingie would be far better utilised as an impact sub at the moment, Tchoyi caused Swansea problems when he came on.
This home slump is a massive problem as we now have some difficult games to come. Nearly 3 hours to travel 60 miles home, very frustrated Baggie at present.

If expecting to beat the likes of Norwich, Swansea and Wigan at home is ‘arrogance’ then forgive me for being arrogant. If you’re happy with the situation, fair enough, but I expect better and I think that JP probably does too. As for there being no managers “out there”, well our excellent chairman seems to be able to find them. And yes I include RH in that even though I think he should now go. However, it’s not what I think it’s what JP and his fellow directors decide to do. I don’t envy them their decision, but I do trust them to make the right one.

There are bigger issues for the FA to concern itself with at the moment than to harp on about ‘that’ T-shirt!
Why were the match threads closed Sunday afternoon; stupid decision.
Having struggled to and from the Hawthorns on Saturday I think Mr Hodgson’s comments were as hard to stomach as the poor performance 24,000+ had to endure. I’ve watched football for 50 years and I can’t believe neither the coach nor players can see what’s going wrong at Home.
Cyril repeated something I said months ago; the team are being over coached and the confidence and creativity has been flowing away match after match. I’ll give one small example:
Four times in first half we had a throw in on the Easr Stand side near Swansea’s area – not once did a play run into space down the channel to create space behind the back four. Last season we did this, but with our “hard to beat” strategy the robots in blue and white stripples are firmly ‘behind the ball’.
Finally, yes we created more chances – they scored from both shots on target – but this was from the Albion having only 34.6% of the ball. Listening to Hodgson is like watching repeats of “One Foot in the Grave”….

2.Baggiedad. My most humble apologies mate, I did not intend to offend, it was supposed to be funny, to lighten our misery. It backfired. Neither you, sid or me could do worse at home is what I meant. It’s the sort of thing we’d say to, (or at) each other in the pub and laugh. Forgiven ?
One thing I learned about 45 years ago is to step back from a big problem, pretend you are advising someone (and not advising yourself).
When we are in too close, we can’t see wood for trees. If we don’t crack the form at home, we are in deep pooh. No matter how small the fan, it will be widely distributed.
We all have our views on it. Mine is ‘GO FOR BROKE’. What’s the bottom line? We’ll lose the match. So how is that different from now?
The crowd could wake up if it’s exciting.
To Roy I would say, “Gee it a goo”. We’ll understand and respect it. In fact, I’ll love it!
Getting so passionate I forgot to say,
The FA are representative of the ills of our country, kick hard the unimportant and look away from the disastrous. We have lost the use of a good centre forward from a bone-chipping, unpunished tackle, a centre half could now be one-eyed. Yet we have all seen heavy punishments for low-level fouls. Are the FA accountable? If so, to whom? John Terry is, in my opinion, not a nice man at all, but he’s been punished and found guilty without a trial. Capello may resign in protest and at £6million a year they’ll be delighted. I feel uncomfortable with it.

Good to see we can have a row without falling out.
Three things Cyril.
The John Terry solution is probably the worst in a long line of ridiculous FA decisions. Neither fish nor foul, strip him of captaincy but leave him in the squad so he’s both guilty and not guilty.
Not often I’m sympathetic to Stoke but the Huth sending off wasn’t a terrible tackle and took no account of the treacherous conditions, yet the Crouch assault on Jonas is deemed acceptible. Unbelievable.

Oh,and so what if he saved us from relegation last season, which would have cost us millions and dumped us into the lower divisions?

as for getting on his back, i’ve had the odd poke at him on these message boards, which i wouldn’t think would have a great effect on him. i never get on anyone’s back while i’m at a game, in fact i’ve often complained on here about doing so. peter odemwingie, like anyone else, has my full and earnest backing for as long as he wears our colours, and i hope as much as anyone else that his form clicks again and he starts doing what we all know he’s capable of. but if he’s gonna keep missing sitters i’m gonna keep taking the micheal.

Your loyalty to Roy is touching but misplaced. Take off your rose tinted glasses put your hand on your heart and tell me we have played good football this season, that you have enjoyed watching the performances at home. Stoke, Fulham, Wigan, Everton, Norwich and Swansea, one point out of 18 , disgrace.
Players afraid to go forward because of a manager who is obsessed with defence. He reminds me more and more of Brian Little ‘ we start at 0-0 and finish 0-0 we have done well’ .Yes he has many accomplishments but you are only as good as your current season and frankly for me it has been dire.England ?? no chance , he would be the worst appointment since Mclaren.Redknapp is nailed on unless he goes to jail.

i don’t often moan, and usually when i do it’s tongue in cheek. whatever the case i reserve the right to moan if i want. i fail to see how i can be ‘supportive’ of the players, or otherwise, by having a bit of a moan on an intranet web forum, as the players don’t sit all day reading this stuff.

I make it 7 from the last 18, oh sorry I see it, you’re cherry picking the results to suit your argument.
Please read your post to Rocket and pope and try to put some perspective on it. Yes the football is less attractive at the moment I can’t argue with you or Cyril on that one but we’re harder to beat.
Yes I know all about our current home form but remember the Tony Mowbray days when we would play lovely football only to lose because we couldn’t defend. I seem to remember at the time you weren’t drooling over the lovely football when we lost these games but bemoaning the fact that an ex-defender couldn’t organise a defence.
The job is a work in progress, we look more solid at the back but less fluent further forward. Can I suggest that if Roy was able to wave a magic wand and instantly turn us into a top half team he wouldn’t be with us but would be plying his trade at Chelsea.
He has been a bit hamstrung by what has been a really bad run of injuries. This isn’t an excuse as these things happen but surely our own fans ought to be able to recognise this. We’ve had players off form and people of your persuasion blame this on Roy shackling players into a defensive system. Against Wigan, Norwich and Swansea I’ve seen our midfield play simple passes straight to the opposition, on Saturday we had eight or nine corners yet most of them reached the first man at waist height is this down to Roy’s rigid formation? I think it’s more likely down to players scared to death to make a mistake.
I’ve seen the same thing at Wolves previously and at our ground in the dark days of Scott Darton and others but didn’t think I’d see it in our current position. As I said the other day, some of our fans are either spoilt or have very short memories. Constant comparisons with TM or RDM would carry more weight if the people making them weren’t the same ones that used to constantly decry those two managers and call for them to be replaced.
Brilliant posts Rocket. AIK, Pope and Kev likewise and at least you’re giving Warren a break from having to bang his head against the brick wall for a bit.

and incidentally, i deliberately abstained from posting on the match thread on saturday night, because i found the negativity on there as hard to stomach as the match itself.
we’re poor at home, but we’re picking up points on the road and we’ll stay up. it’s a bit disappointing because it’s always nice if you can put the good performances in in front of your public, but we’ve got key players injured (i always said brunt would be a huge miss and he is) , the bloke who we all thought would be our top scorer again is enduring a nightmare season, and then the bloke who looked like he was gonna replace him as top scorer turns out to be injury-prone and spends more time in the medical room than on the pitch.
we have two new signings to bed in in the next few games, hopefully Long coming back, let’s see how it goes. personally, kev, i see myself as one of the more positive and optimistic posters on here, and no wall heath i don’t bury my head in the sand (pehaps for fear of scuffing my rose tinted glasses) i’m just realistic about everything in life, i have to be, and i have to include the Albion…

As a fan who is on the other side of the fence to you I find your comments unbelievable and sad.
You base your argument on our home form and the fact that we are still 6 points above the drop zone is more or less down to are good away form isn’t mentioned. You then say players are afraid to go forward because of the manager.,Have you ever considered that over the weeks we have had up to 12 squad players out injured or carrying injuries? So not allowing the manager to field his best side and so not allowing us to play how he would like.
Have you also considered the Manager’s and some of the players comments on how they feel about playing at home in front of a crowd “full of a fearful silence” creating anxiety which transmits itself to the players and maybe, just maybe that they are not getting forward because of fear of going a goal down and increasing the anxiety?
Max I don’t mean any of the above personally so please think what I’ve said before you rip into the keyboard and I’m sure you know what I mean by that remark.
I’m sure Pope means that we are all in this together and he doesn’t see the sense in moaning and criticising when that can only make things worse, where as support and a “Boing Boing” atmosphere at the Hawthorns can only do good.
I myself can’t understand why some fans are fighting other fans for wanting to change the atmosphere in the ground from a bad one to a good one, when it would benefit us all.

I said on here awhile ago that I’ve never met Roy (he seems to have a nasty streak ,so he might bite me ‘ead off),and I also said I don’t particularly like his style of football.
And I don’t think I’ve ever said I’m enjoying what I’m watching this season.
Why I seem to ‘jump to his defence’ is that Albion chased him until he agreed to come, then probably asked him to save us last season, and try to preserve our status in this one.
So he could of just had a peaceful retirement, but he came to do a job instead, and I’m sure he’s doing the best he can.
I just don’t like the fact that some people have been on his back for months, and he’s not in a position to answer them back,so I want the guy to be treated fairly and with some respect.
And that’s about the long and short of it.

When a man, (or woman, oh blimey, this is going to be the People’s Liberation Front of Judea in a minute), decides to become a professional footballer or an actor, THEY ACCEPT THEY WILL BE IN THE PUBLIC EYE, on a large stage if they are lucky and succeed. The rewards are usually high, the fame immense. Explain in simple terms how they can carry psychological problems with them? The person has to WANT to flash their skills, to show off, to milk the applause. Any performer needing a top psychologist when things are amiss may well have chosen the wrong profession. I can’t accept ‘hiding’ on the field. Put it right by doing even more. If a player needs to hide, they should not be in the team. We all like to succeed in what we do and a pat on the back is worth two kicks up the bum. Prem. players have to be strong enough to cope or they should NOT be there.

If you take it to extremes it shouldn’t matter if all of our crowd boo the team onto the pitch and jeer them throughout the game but it would, wouldn’t it?
sherlock.
Sensitive old me should no more than most that it’s easy to react to a remark when everybody on here seems to be slagging off somebody at the club because we’ve lost a game. Personally I always find your jibes good natured as you say rather than nasty.

Your first 2 sentences are contradictory, that’s the fence I’m on about.
What is your idea on how to get behind the team during games? Do you just clap when they make a good pass or tackle etc and shout your dismay when the do the contrary?
I don’t know why you’ve mentioned Roy and the players reading these posts for me that is not an issue.
I totally agree that anybody has the right to air their views after the match as it is anybody’s right to disagree with them but it does seem that those with negative views seem to take more of an exception to the fact that other people challenge their views and seem to dismiss relevant facts.
Don’t you think that always having negative views and looking to what they think is wrong
puts you in the frame of mind that makes you all too quick to criticise mistakes on the pitch?
Would you also agree that it would be more helpful to our present predicament for the players, who frame of mind we know from comments in the press over the weekend,to come out and play in a better atmosphere than there is at the moment?

People are not robots so I accept that we are all ‘up and down’ at times. But read my statement again. If you CHOOSE the spotlight, the show must go on. You simply have to rise above your fears. If you are ‘in a state’, then you should not be playing. Thats what reserves and understudies are for. That may be hard, but it’s also essentially true.
Take the amateur stage. No traing at Rada, just an eagerness to learn lines and be someone else for a week. Usually NO UNDERSTUDIES either. So, if they’re up to it, they perform. They simply ATTOO!
Kev, the comparison with ‘over the top’ in WW1 is not fair mate. Noone CHOSE to be there.
Many men and young officers died ‘being brave’, but few Generals.
sherlock. My point is, if they choose the spotlight, they have to perform or cry off sick. There ain’t no inbetween. Now wash the sink round and think. Once the ref blows to start, or the curtain rises, you get out there and do the job. Or you are in the wrong job.

I mentioned the players reading this because this is where i get rid of my Albion related frustration, apart from when i booed against Wigan.
Normally i am most vocal behind the team when we are on the attack , when they attack i am normally to concerned to shout anything. For the record i wish you could sit in my seat for a game and listen to the bloke behind, he makes me look like ‘Mary Poppins’, you would have a fit at him.
I agree a better atmosphere would benefit everybody but quite how you are going to attain this is way beyond my limited intelligence.
I agree again that i am a very negative person ( drives me better half round the bend) but you are what you are and unless i have a full frontal lobotomy this will not change. Any ideas on this matter would be much appreciated

Sherlock. I haven’t even a faint idea what that means. I am NOT taking a rise out of anyone, either directly or indirectly. In fact, I don’t do ‘Indirectly’
I raised a topic and a strong viewpoint. The Vice Chairman of the MAS, TRBH, doesn’t agree with me. I certainly never expected you to, but it was up for discussion and debate, not chucking half-end bricks.
My son got on the 1970s LSD drug scene and went from Uni. to sitting on the other side of the moon. We’ve now got much of him back. I have strong views on drugs too as one might expect. As a result, I’ve also met psychologists and psychiatrists. They are an essential part of modern life.
Now I still say, READ the bloody question and topic I raised, then calmly answer it. Nothing personal needed.
PS: One Friday afternoon in the last 2 hours with a full time group of mixed students, I dared to show Monty Python’s ‘Life Of Brian’
We could discuss the effect that had if you’d rather!

80 WALL HEATH. Have to agree with all your posts mate and also Cyrils. Over the years many top performers, eg pianists and singers have been physically sick before a performance, but have still gone out and brought the house down. It’s about wanting it enough and rising above your nerves. As for Mrs Browns Boys, I agree it is the funniest thing for ages. I missed series 1 so have just bought the dvd. Quite brilliant.

I agree that player should try and rise above their nerves and they probably do but when they come out to an atmosphere that has often been described on here as poisonous or like a morgue and after a couple of mistakes start to get abuse, what’s that going to do for their nerves?
When a comic or artist comes out onto the stage it’s to rapturous applause and if he or she tell a bad joke he may be heckled by the odd person not thousands and if an artist plays or sings a bum note most people wouldn’t notice so I don’t think it is a fair comparison.
How do you support the team at the match? Vocally or not.

89. We don’t all agree on here, it would be pretty boring if we did would it not. We’d all have to wear those little grey suits like they do in North Korea. I do understand and respect what you’re trying to achieve and of course I agree that vocal support will encourage the team. However, I still think it’s primarily the teams responsibility to get the crowd going in the first place. It’s a chicken and egg thing. A good run of home results would soon change the atmosphere . In the article at the top of this page Paul Scharner says he doesn’t blame the crowd for booing. Over the years, rightly or wrongly, supporters have used the match as a vent to let off steam. I’m not sure that will change.

Can’t afford to play Scharner in case he slips up and shows his T-Shirt. Remember the last time it happened at the NETTO-GHETTO, Lee Hughes does.

If not why not?

PS.
I let off plenty off steam at matches and 99.9% of it is positive steam. Until the final whistle blows I try to raise the team, I go to see them win. I’ve never booed the team off, if they’ve played poorly I maintain a dignified silence which I think tells the players just as much.

Not been around today, but have just read all the posts with interest and with apologies for being late Sir, here goes my contribution.
Of course your right, a better atmosphere would certainly help and it’s down to all of us to generate this and by all of us I also include the players!
To my knowledge the team have never come out to booing and believe me the whole place is waiting for the slightest chance to take the roof off, it’s certainly been a long time!
But I do find myself agreeing with Cyril, it’s the performers who set the tone!

I don’t agree but understand and respect your opinion on who should go first but it definitely isn’t the crowds job to be openly hostile if things ain’t going the way they demand.
I’m sure that the team doesn’t want to play as they have been and you could see that they are trying but it just ain’t clicking, can you say the same about the crowd? they are choosing to abuse the players, they are choosing not to give vocal support when things ain’t right.
There is only one thing that the crowd can do to help get us back on track, that is too hold fire with the criticism at the match till the end of the season if things are not to their liking or if we are definitely relegated, until
then give their total support to WBAFC.
Adéu
PS also take our recent injury problems into consideration when being judge and jury.
I think our poor home form is the fault of the manager and not the crowd. I don’t believe in booing and of course at the start of any match the crowd should be as up for it as the team. I just think that from then on, the team have to play their part and if they’re rubbish it’s wrong to blame the crowd. Just as a negative crowd affects the players, then surely it’s only fair to say that a negative performance on the pitch affects the crowd. I really hope Hodgson gets it right, but I doubt it, and the home supporters get what they deserve, which is better than what’s been dished up so far.

I am a great fan of Lee Mack in ‘Not Going Out’, although I have to put the words up too as he is machine gun fast. So when he was doing a single spot of gags I tuned in expecting belly laughs aplenty. I was deeply disappointed. He walked up and down in demented fashion, swore non-stop and the gags just were not funny, (OK that bit’s subjective). I didn’t think they were funny.
The audience did and laughed. I’m bewildered.

BOGOF.
Sorry,I’ve been out shoppin’ for bargains….
Anyway, back on track, you want my input?
Well,I think the older ones on here especially should be a little bit ashamed of themselves if they sit back waiting for the Baggies to make them inspired enough to shout.
Why?
Remember- aren’t the Albion still seen as a ‘family club’ by some?
And when we used to go to the Albion ground as kids in the ’60′s,didn’t it feel like we were part of a big family, and we all used to sing together because we were just happy to be there?
Think about it-
if your Son or Daughter was in the school team,or playing for another team in the park, you’d go to watch them, right?
And during the game,a guy comes up to you and says-
‘is that your Son/Daughter out there?’
‘yes’.
‘Well, you’re very quiet watching them, aren’t you?’
‘yes I am.I’m waiting for them to do something to impress me before I say anything, thank you very much………’.
So my advice?
If you go to the Hawthorns-
SHOUT FOR YOUR CLUB!!!
If you want to sit down and be impressed by footballers showing ‘silky skills’-
SIT IN FRONT OF THE TELLY AND WATCH HIGHLIGHTS OF 300 MILLION POUND MAN.CITY PLAYING………….!!!
Now-
‘Give me an ‘A’,give me an ‘L’,give me a ‘B’…….’
You know the rest………

Thanks for coming back with your input and I’ll excuse you this time for being late but don’t let it happen again,we do have a fining system in place for such behaviour but we don’t like to enforce it due to the present economic climate so take this as a verbal warning, which has been noted.
You say in your post that it is down to all of us to generate the atmosphere including the players but is it the law of the land that the players have to go first. Why can’t the crowd go out of turn? and take the roof off if as you say they are just waiting for the chance, after all they are doing nothing else on match days to help their club stay in the top flight,at least the players are trying on the pitch even if it aint clicking for them.
I agree the fans have always used the match to let off steam but why is it all negative steam at the moment for a lot of fans when WBAFC need there help to at least finish 17th in the no1 league in the world where they are competing against the odds with teams, one which has spent 1 billion pounds so far in it quest for success.

Not blaming the younger fans as this is down to the way that the people we trusted to run our football have failed to protect our football from the money men.
If Albion, Wolves, Stoke etc went down to the third tier of English football again how many of our modern day customers would stay with them?

glad you should bring that point up. It brings to my mind an occasion, not so very long ago, around the time that Megson had just delivered us to the ‘Promised Land’
we were sat in a boozer, me, my dad and my older brother, chatting excitedly about ‘seeing them play the likes of arsenal again’
then my brother brought up the subject of the old third division days, the 7 or 8 thousand that attended home games, and the few hundred of us who travelled away
And how well i remember nodding in agreement when my old man said;
”yes, but if the club alienates those 7 or 8 thousand with their Premiership ticket prices, will they ever come back if we find ourselves down there again?”
what i’m saying is that, from what i can see, those 7 or 8 thousand have, over the years, been replaced by fans of the PREMIER LEAGUE, who will not be at the hawthorns if ever we’re relegated
