Hodgson hails West Brom midfielder James Morrison
Thursday 26th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Roy Hodgson today named James Morrison as an early player-of-the-season contender as he hailed his Albion form.
West Bromwich Albion boss Hodgson saluted the midfielder as one of the stars of his 11 months in charge after the Scotland international’s latest eye-catching display at Stoke on Saturday.
Morrison bagged his third goal of the season at the Britannia Stadium as Albion won at Stoke for the first time in 30 years.
And Hodgson said: “I think he has had a good season so far. Touch wood, he’s been playing very well for a while now.
“He’s been up there among our best players for quite a while. It’s nice for me to see him get recognition. I think he has been excellent.
“When he plays centrally, in particular, he’s done some very good work, and when he’s had to go wide and do a job for the team he has done it. When you take the 24 games we’ve had this season, he’d be right up there with the best performers.”
Morrison was joined on the scoresheet on Saturday by fellow Scotland international Graham Dorrans, who grabbed a late winner.
And Hodgson believes Dorrans, who has endured an injury-ravaged spell, is edging back to his best form.
“It’s good to see Graham Dorrans is getting better match by match,” said Hodgson. “We’re beginning to see the best of him.”

I suppose it was a good job that we didn’t sell him when some of us said he was crap and we didn’t know what he brought to team, ay it?

”too lightweight”, i believe was the common phrase of the day
i never was too sure what people meant by that. not enough Bathams and pork pies or summat?
hope he sticks to the salads then

Kev – I was one who said we should sell him (though I never said he was crap, lol)! I’m glad we didn’t, he’s been brilliant! Let’s hope he keeps it up.

Roy,
He is playing forceful football now he is in his favourite position and I’m not referring to the one in the photo. Just needs slight adjustments on his shooting sites. We know Dorrans is a great talent, glad to see him returning to top form. You only have to get Thomas doing what we know he can, then we are buzzing. Looking forward to the rest of the season and Thanks.

I’ve always held him in High regards and was happy when we signed him. He is creative but has also become combative which is a great assett to us as we’re not too tough as a team.

Kev, you can lose form, but you never lose class. These two kids have it in bundles.
Jacques. I don’t know what else Thomas can do, in my view he’s a MUST in the team. I reckon he’s worth his weight in gold. Take last Saturday. He was up against an England International and often double-marked. Stoke also do not take prisoners. I thought he’d end up in a heap. They couldn’t get near him most of the match. If he kept his shooting nearer the floor, he’d be the best winger in the country!

This illustrates that we should leave Roy to do what he is doing best, managing the team. I also think Thomas is a good player, and will be raved about when his fortunes turn, just like MAF suddenly. I only have one slight niggle with you Roy, I wish you wouldn’t leave sub changes so late as its frustrating and my fingernails shorten by the minute.

I think James is lightweight, and I have not reversed my Fiat Tank up on the matter. I have also said he is a very good player, and told people to remember the last Prem adventure before his ankle injury. Mozza needs to play in the middle, along with 2 more central midfielders (Dorrans and Allan, and then we can sort out the Scottish National team for them). So back to my age old point about our squad looks better with 5 in the middle!
McAuley would be my pick for player of the year. I do not dread corners or free kicks anymore.

Bully and Kev,
I’ve had a word with Jimmy, and to celebrate his current form,we’re goin’ for a drink tonight.
I’m meeting him in The Vine, then we’re off to a club.
Is it ok if we meet you on West Brom high St.?
We’ll be near the old Salter’s place about 9.00 p.m.,so shall we share a taxi?
The best route to the club is,turn left at…………
Oops! Sorry,I’d better send you an e-mail…………………:)

Cyril,
With you one hundred percent, Just like him to byline it a bit more and like you say, when shooting, get his head over the ball and stay out of defence. Even the Stokies said he was Brilliant, all they see out wide is a long throw. So you see mate, as you say, he doesn’t have to do much more as he is already a box of tricks.

Just shows how it’s a game of opinions. My only gripe with JT is that he doesn’t cut into the box enough where it’s difficult for opposition defenders to tackle. We might even get a penalty one day.

I’d love to see Osaze turn it around. We all know he is a great finisher, he has proved it often enough. Some of our fans need to get off his back and give him breathing space.

Agreed,
Jimmy’s having a very good season and since the Blackburn away game has really been in top form and consistently our best palyer.
His work rate is phenominal plus he’s one of the best striker’s of a ball in the division, his technique is first class.

8) TRB Who? I don’t quite understand your comment regarding my earlier post.
If you check my post 23 after the Stoke game (written at 7.23 on Jan 21st) you will find that I state that, in my opinion, “James Morrison should not play out wide.” This is very similar to post 5.
I take it by your comment that you believe that I am inconsistent. I am quite aware that you have an issue with me, but please make informed comments based on facts rather than having a cheap pop.

Back to serious-
when Jimmy joined us,he made it clear that central midfield was very much his preferred position, and it’s easy to see why-
his natural game is pass and move, pass and move,he links up play, and from the centre he has the full scope of the pitch, giving him the maximum number of options.
Over wide on the touchline,he loses half of those options, and unless he’s allowed to cross the touchline and run along the bus lane,he’s quite restricted.
During the spell that he looked ‘off form’,he still did what he always does, except the sometimes intricate short passing just wasn’t working out,it happens, but if you keep belief, sooner or later it will right itself.
As for being ‘lightweight’,well he’s not built for power,or crunching tackles, but that’s why we have a balance of styles in midfield,if he changed his physical build, then his game would probably have to change as well.
And as for being the target of the ‘get rid of him ‘ brigade-
herein lies the problem.
I guess the two individuals who’ve received most stick this season at the hands of the Baggies fans have been Manager Roy,and Peter O.
Ironically,it was last January that the fans at Liverpool F.C. pushed RH to the brink of being kicked out,and I recall it was also last winter that Pete had a slump in form,it became so bad that he booked in for sessions with the psychologist.
At this point in time, neither one was exactly flavour of the month, but how did events then proceed?
Well Roy was asked to save our backside, and this he went on to do in spectacular style.
We also had P.O. return to form, hitting the net several more times before the end of the season.
Everyone at the club contributes, but if these two men hadn’t ‘done the business’, we’d have been playing Cardiff in the Cup this season,AND the league-
stuck in the championship, with no revenue, and our best players lining up to leave.
It would have given us second rate football, and we’d have lost many millions.
So whatever we’re payin’ ‘em in their contract,it still ain’t enough……………

Cantello,
Brilliant post, well worth the time and effort. With our injured gradually returning, I firmly believe we have sufficient wherewithal to stay in this division. Morrison is akin to Bryan Robson as a box to box player and he also likes a dip at goal. Long may it last.

I don’t ‘have an issue’ with you, I don’t know you and I’m sure you’re probably a decent bloke. I do have an issue with some of your views on players and when I do I say so. This one was flippant and as it offended I apologise. It wasn’t aimed solely at you but a few weeks back when he was having a bad time you couldn’t move on these pages for people queueing up to have a pop at him. Where are they now? Likewise I’m often attacked/ridiculed for defending players but people rarely come back when said players come good (remember the people saying Foster was rubbish after half a dozen games?0
I credit you and Lone Throstle for coming on and being honest enough to admit it. I just get angry at knee jerk reactions about players and the manager. As you know I defended Scott Carson but I never had a problem with people saying they thought he wasn’t good enough for us, I’d argue with them yes. But I can’t accept calling our players clowns, donkeys, or greedy (this seems to be for negotiating a new contract that the club wanted him to sign. How many of us say ‘no don’t pay me that much gaffer, I’m not worth it?’)
So I apologise for being sarcastic as an excuse I offer frustration but not for disagreeing with people on here when I think they’re wrong. It’s never personal mboy.

25) TRBH – Just for the record, the only player that I have criticised in the past is Bednar and I didn’t have much of a problem with Carson (although I now accept that Ben Foster is a step up in class). I will however admit that I have issues with the Manager. I thank him that he saved us from Relegation last season, and can accept his pragmatic approach compared to the flambouyant days of Mowbray and Di Matteo. However, I believe him to be stubborn in the formation he has preferred for the whole of his coaching career as I believe that it doesn’t suit our players. I can only hope that he persists with the formation that worked so well last Saturday (but not holding my breath!!).

let’s say then that, after keeping us up last season (for which you very nobly thank him and i’m sure he’d be delighted with your gratitude) Roy Hodgson had left the club, leaving us as a Premier League club with a vacant manager’s seat
who do you think would have taken us that step further?

That will be the ‘Comfy Chair Club’ then. Members of whom I somehow bully through these pages by disagreeing with them.
You call PO ‘Greedy, lazy and selfish,’ fairly insulting comments yet if I have the temerity to disagree I’m ganging up on you.
What was wrong with what he did?
Who’s terms was he supposed to sign on? It would be the first time I’ve heard of a player (or anybody) accepting less than they can get.
He was still in contract so how was he holding us to ransom? It was the club pushing the new contract not him.
And finally how do you know he was holding out for a better offer? Did he tell you because at the end of the day he was still under contract?
28 mboy.
I can’t argue with any of that so I won’t. Like I say it’s nothing personal and cheers for the reply.

In fairness mate, Odemwingie said at the beginning of the summer he didn’t want to leave and was happy here, however he’d consider it if a top European club came in for him. Who wouldn’t?
He waited, nobody came in and he signed his contract. Arguably he’s just kept to his word rather than held anybody to ransom.
Furthermore he was already under contract, so it was Albion’s prerogative to offer increased terms. We could still have kept him on his old contract.
I’m not gonna argue his performances have been up there with last year. But there were times last year he was lazy, it’s only now people seem to notice it because he’s signed a contract.
Also, Blackburn, Newcastle, Wolves, Norwich…..an out-of-form Odemwingie isn’t worthless. I can’t see who we’d get to replace him remotely in the same class for the money we’d get for him. It surely makes more sense to get behind him rather than turn him into the panto villain.

29 – sherlock – I’m sure that Roy IS delighted by my, and thousands of other’s, gratitude. I am just disappointed that after the excellent run that we had at the end of last season (whilst playing 4-5-1) has not extended into this season.
Also, I don’t think that I have ever said that we should get rid of Hodgson – I just hope that he can be more flexible with his formations.

31 Warren,
I was thinking exactly the same as you, mate.
I read the P.O. interviews in the summer, and it made sense that a 29 year old pro. footballer would be interested if a top club wanted his services.
Recently,Jonas Olsson said a similar thing in a Swedish interview.
Your post is a very sensible and mature one-
Unfortunately, you are disagreeing with someone 20 years your senior, who is behaving like he’s 20 years your junior.
I fear you may be wasting your time.
