West Brom 1 Norwich City 2 – match report
Saturday 14th January 2012, 5:12PM GMT.
Two sucker-punch goals from Norwich condemned West Brom to a third successive Premier League defeat despite a goalscoring return by Shane Long.
The Baggies were hit on the break by former Wolves man Andrew Surman on 43 minutes and Steve Morison on 79 as they lost despite having the better of the game.
Long’s sixth goal of the season from the penalty spot on 68 minutes had put Roy Hodgson’s side level but they paid the price for defensive naivety and they still have just two league wins at home this season.
Albion had the better of the opening exchanges and were almost ahead on seven minutes when a long-range shot from Peter Odemwingie was fumbled by a diving John Ruddy.
The Norwich keeper was grateful to see the ball rebound off his hand onto the crossbar.
But the hosts had a let-off on 12 minutes when a mix-up at the back saw keeper Ben Foster’s clearance hit Steve Morison and trickle against the frame of the goal.
Ruddy made up for his earlier error with a smart save on 21 minutes.
He scrambled low to his right to block Simon Cox’s cross after neat build-up play by Odemwingie and James Morrison.
Albion appealed for a penalty when Jerome Thomas tumbled in the box but replays suggested he had slipped when turning away from Zak Whitbread.
Morrison went close on the half-hour, connecting sweetly with a 20-yard volley and forcing Surman into a crucial goalline clearance.
And Paul Scharner failed to connect cleanly with a header from a James Morrison corner.
The Baggies were hit with a sucker punch two minutes before the break as they were hit on the break by the pace of Simeon Jackson and Wes Hoolahan’s cross was volleyed in by Surman.
Morrison tried his luck again from distance for Albion early in the second half after a lay-off by Odemwingie but the effort flew just over.
And Long almost scored with his first touch, a shot on the turn that was blocked low down by Ruddy.
The Baggies hitman got on the scoresheet minutes later from the penalty spot to level the scores.
A neat Albion move was ended with Daniel Ayala’s foul on Thomas and Long placed the spot-kick inside Ruddy’s left-hand post.
But the lead lasted just 11 minutes before the Baggies were hit on the break again.
Mulumbu was robbed of possession by Kyle Naughton and he released substitute Grant Holt, whose cross was headed in at the far post by Morison off the hand and body of the despairing Ben Foster.

Another poor result against a team we should be beating easily.
This is the worst football to watch in all the years I’ve been going down the Baggies.

Cold realisation that this team are not Premiership quality.
A team previously playing with flair are now playing with negative caution.
The big players are not doing it but have their nice contracts and obvious get out clauses if the pending doom becomes fact.
Too much bigging this side up this season.
There has not been a hint of a decent run in the league.
Nothing potent about our strike force.
The last two weeks of January are critical for Roy Hodgson. He often refers to the quality of the squad; lets see some evidence in the performances.
Its your home form that keeps you up; ours is abysmal.
Survival is seriously a major challenge now.
New faces may appear but you are very fortunate to get instant results from mis-season purchases.
We are just way too predictable in all areas at the moment and Roy seems to be struggling to arrest the slide.
I wish him well as he is a decent bloke but not convinced after this latest low that he has the players that can turn this around.
Please prove me wrong Roy!

Bangkok Baggie, stop being an idiot calling for Hodgson to go. Yes our home form is shocking but that has more to do with the players having no pride in the shirt. Thomas and Odemwingie plus Cox just arn’t good enough and or just can’t be bothered. As a season ticket holder it disgraceful that we have to watch lackluster performances wk in and wk out. We need a target man to play up front with Long and a decent winger. When jones is fit Shorey won’t start, I know we have key players injured but the ones going out are good enough Bar a few players and should be able to put on a good performance to teams around the bottom.

Played well today, just need to be a bit more clinical we had more than enough opportunities to win the game. We are still closer to 10th than the place below us, no need for over-reactions.

Has hodgson lost it, will we hear another bog standard interview from him how we didn’t play to badly and were unlucky it’s a joke, were has all the alleged sky money gone and money generated from transfers!!! And why have we gone from a dominant 4-5-1 team to a pathetic 4-4-2 team which clearly doesn’t work yet we stick at it although it’s never worked from day one!
1 Bangkok – cant agree with you. For the second match running the manager made 3 offensive substitutions to try and win the game. Too many players don’t look bothered.
Norwich had 2 good chances, both on the break and scored both times. On both occasions, we were attacking and when they broke up the play, their desire to get forward was awesome – on both breaks they had 4 players in our box causing chaos.
Thought Jara, Thomas, mulumbu and Dawson played well – long made a difference when he came on – he really could turn into an Albion legend, similar to Superbob?
Every week I moan about PO – thought he was rubbish today – he can’t even pass to a striped shirt anymore – would definitely play cox and long at stoke if they are both fit?
If we don’t start scoring some goals at home, we are doomed!
I’m not a great Roy Hodgson fan, but come on, the guy can only work with what he’s got! It wasn’t Roy who let Norwich break on two counter-attacks and paid the ultimate price.
The problem lies not with the manager but with the nature of the club itself. The Board keeps the club ticking over, however, the question is whether or not this provides a firm enough base for season upon season progress and currently I would say it doesn’t.
Yes, the quality of our players has improved, but not to the extent of other mid-table clubs. Have we enough quality to keep Albion in the Premier League – 20 goals in 21 games would suggest we haven’t.
Can’t believe what I’ve just read this guy is
obviously angry but when he has time to think he
should remember we had quite a few players out
still injured and those coming in probably still
carrying a few niggles. We knew visitors had the
aerial threat of Morrison and Holt and we being
without our usual centre back pairing would be at
a disadvantage. Roy was suprisingly upbeat after
the game so he realised that when we have regulars
back we’ll be ok. Norwich will realise that was a
fortunate 3 pts a bit like ours at their place.

1Bangkok. That’s a bit fierce mate. It was an entertaining game overall, we had enough chances to win it easily but, as this report says, we were suckered twice. We scored a penalty but I don’t think we would have got an open play goal if we were out there now! The shooting was a mixture of good but saveable and downright awful. It does not take a psychic to realise that Odemwingie is looking for an out and may be gone sooner rather than later. Thomas had a good game but needed subbing after some hard tackles. Mulumbu was excellent as usual. The rest all played well enough but toothless. This home form needs putting right and NOW or we shall be in deep sludge. PLEASE don’t blame the crowd, they gave it all they could at times, but the groans won in the end.

You buy Championship players you deserve to play in that league. Why does the club allow our players to talk to the press about how important all this to them, making the Hawthorns a Fortress, crutial times of the season, must improve the home form, the next 6 games will decide our fate etc etc. Do your talking on the pitch!!! Do you honestly think that any player worth his salt would want to join us, not on your life. We’re buying & developing youngsters to sell on not to further our club. We sacked RDM for his poor form & I suggest we do the same with RH. We missed a trick with Mark Hughes, no wonder Appy wanted out.

It doesn’t seem to matter who the manager is at Albion, we just cannot seem to perform highly on a regular basis in the Premier League.
Roy is working with one hand tied behind his back (as have many of our previous managers) because he knows Albion “cannot afford” the players he would like to bring in.
Every manager under Peace has had to operate to a strict budget, on the cheap, hoping for loan deals and cast offs!
It’s all very well patting Peace on the back for balancing the books but what use is that if we are continually year after year involved in a Premier League relegation scrap? Football is all about winning – and after supporting Albion for 50 years, I know that’s a habit Albion never seem to get into!

I can see a lot of fans are not impressed with Hodgson, and I agree with them. He’s a spent force, couldn’t do it with the players he had at Liverpool, what chance has he got with our team. Just look at the bloke, can you see him going into the changeing room at half time and motivating the players? Think about it, all our best players have gone backwards since he has been here, Wingie Thomas scharner,Brunt, even Olsen doesnt have the same enthusiasm for the game. Its not that we don’t have the players to do it for us, its that they just need a kick up the backside and have a leader who can make it known that it matters.
John from Oldbury. Well said mate, I agree 100% with your comment. I can’t believe the posts above who are defending RH and blaming the players. Of course they are ultimately responsible, but Hodgson coaches them, picks them and dictates tactics and sadly it appears he cannot motivate them. You can bury your head in the sand as much as you like, but the reality is he must be SACKED now and Derek McInnes brought in, as JFO says. RH is an ageing multi- millionaire who has lost his hunger and desire .

I asked Warren the other day why he was still banging his head on that wall and two of the first five posts tell me exactly why he does it.
On the way home I heard Lee (the Baggies fanatic who doesn’t actually go to games) berating “Peace” (as he calls him) for not splashing the cash (perhaps if you went Lee there would be a bit more cash to splash) Lee attacked “Ashworth” for our scouting policy. As an example Lee we were in for Chehk Tiote before Newcastle offered him more money because they have a multi millionaire Chairman and 50,000 plus home gates (perhaps if a few more Lee’s put there money where their big mouths are we might hit the 25,000 mark a bit more often.)
PS Lee. If you don’t rate our buying policy ask most Wulfies if they’d swap.
So where does the money come from?
JP sells the club. I heard an interesting call from a Blackburn fan on the way to the match yesterday and it was one of the saddest things I’ve heard in football. On his way to the game he said “I don’t think I’ll be making this journey next year. Not because we’re so bad we’ve been much worse in the forty years I’ve supported Rovers but it just doesn’t seem as if it’s my club any more.” A lesson there for a lot of fans if you’re in doubt ask Blues or Pompey fans.
Get rid of Roy Hodgson.
Great idea let’s get Fergie or Guus Huydinck in shall we. Oh we can’t because they wouldn’t come to us and we couldn’t afford them. So who do you fancy then? One of the journeymen that’s available, Chris Coleman, Alan Curbishley? Ask yourself why they’re available. I know let’s go and get Derek Macinnes. Great idea, throw a very inexperienced manager into a possible PL relegation dog fight that could end up with the club relegated and his promising managerial career in tatters. Changing the Manager is easy if you’re playing Fantasy Football, I still remember the dark comments about JP on here last season when he changed managers but it worked so it was never mentioned again, especially by his critics.
Poor performance yesterday, we were outrun by a very fit and enthusiastic side that caught us on the break twice. We must learn from this. We lack pace in defence and midfield and can’t afford to committ to attack as if we have Beckenbauer and Schnellinger (one for the youngsters there) to rescue us.
Kevin Davis was mentioned in the week and I think if he’d played yesterday I don’t think we would have lost. Without Olsson we don’t have a natural leader on the pitch to rally the troops, also without Olsson we were bullied by a physical Norwich side (not a criticism of them as it’s a man’s game and they weren’t dirty) Davis would have done the same to their CH’s as Morison and Hoult did to ours.
Mozza had a nightmare and looked as if the player that’s been there for the last few games had sent his twin brother along and without Brunt as well we lacked creativity. PO got the usual predictable comments but I didn’t see anything missing that a goal wouldn’t put right. Long was immense when he came on and I always like to see Dorrans because he has a bit of edge to his game that some others lack when things are going wrong, I’d have them both in the side next week.
PS Warren, Kev, Rocket, Tipton, Rowley etc. How about changing our club name from the GHFC to Headbangers Anonymous.
PPS. Well done to the Norwich fans, proper supporters that have stayed with their team through the bad years but more so because I noticed many of them joined in the applause for the tribute to the King at half time. A credit to your club.

I’m not sure why people are saying we play badly, just a couple of bad individual errors. Hodgson cant do anything about players who dont finish there chances or individual mistakes. This time by Mulumbu on edge of area giving ball away and cox/shorey in same area in first half. Listening to radio last night all 4 Norwich fans said they were fortunate to win. Stop over-reacting

Not the result we wanted yesterday,we need to address this problem urgently i know injuries have not helped but we are missing the key players ie Olson,Blunt, and we need for long to be fully fit.We have to go into the market in the next few days clear out players that are not performing and bring in at least two/three new team players otherwise we are going to be in big trouble even if we exhaust the loan market. striker to score goals, need points to climb table Wolves behind us we are getting to close to relegation as we couldsoon be sucked into the bottom three if we are not carefull.Come on Jermery discuss the problem with Roy, and back him otherwise we shall be going down and looking for another Manager(not good for the club)as we seem to be going backwards instead of forwards.

Some fantastic posts on here, there were only five when I started my epic.
30 John from Oldbury,
Not sure you know what ritualistic means unless you’re suggesting Roy wears a real heart on his sleeve but I think that may be illigal or at the very least breach the hygiene guidelines. Likewise his being tactless, I find him one of the more tactful managers around. Anyway I’ll get back to dreaming in my rose coloured spectacles with Jack as I’m sure this equates to supporting the club in your dictionary.
15.
“You buy Championship players you deserve to play in that league.”
Not sure who you’re referring to, Long, Foster, McCauley, Jones have been amongst our best players this year, all plucked from the Championship.
10 Walsall.
“Where has the Sky money gone.”
I look forward to this as much as the first cuckoo of spring. Yet another who points to the £100 billion squillion (whatever today’s plucked from the air figure is) from Sky yet coyly never makes any mention of the club’s outgoings.
In business accountancy there are things known as books. Books need to balance. Very boring I know but it’s the reason I keep putting off buying that Ferrari.
4 Richard Brennan.
I haven’t time to answer you as halfway through reading your post I had to go and bandage my wrists. Have you ever thought of asking Leonard Cohen if you could write a few songs with him?
To all the people on here that see the long game, well done for restoring my faith. To the Wulfies of which there are many because they can’t have a go on their own site today, you’re welcome and I hope for a poor result next week because I’m sure it’s more satisfying attacking your own club.

Let’s face it the top of Championship is no different from the bottom half of the Prem as Norwich proved today. And in all honesty we struggled against a Cardiff 2nd team in the FAC. We must learn to manage our expectations, WE ARE NOT A TOP FLIGHT TEAM and we will always have good days and bads days just like the other clubs outside of the top 7. We must get over it and try to channel our positive energies in supporting the boys and not on negative discussionthreads like these.

Morning all,
at the moment some players are not performing as we know they can do- as they have done this season. I don’t want to get drawn into a tactical argument about 442 or 451 etc but as we cannot change the players maybe reverting to 451 (with long up front and Mozza behind him in Gera’s abscence) would help the midfield a little bit.
And as others have said – who would we get to replace Roy?? Mcinnes has only just gone to Bristol City and would not leave them….who else is there that could / would do better??? Mad Mick?? i think not.
Two weeks left of the window and if we can find a left back – centre half and maybe a striker then we will be fine. Not time to panic just yet with half the season(nearly) to go.
Regards

I missed my 1st home game yesterday for nearly 2 years due to illness, but from what i heard on match reports etc i was better off at home! Before the game, sky showed an interview with PO,he looked happy, bubbly and relaxed,so i don’t think for a minute he is looking for out as someone on here wrote. We are set out as a counter attacking side mostly nowadays and that suits him and us away from home.
Sacking roy is not the answer.Remember,it was only masive pressure from roy that persuaded JP to spend on shane long.Roy has chosen to spend on 1 player only ,and look at the success there. Before yesterdays game he and ashworth were again trying to persuaded JP to spend a bit now too.So clearly roy knows our troubles, but is restricted by what he has to work with.I can not think of any manager, anywhere in the world that could perform miracles.Whoever replaced roy still only has the same to work with.Roy needs backing from JP,but also from all baggies fans too.

Overall, I won’t blame the players and I’ll even cut some slack for Odemdingdong who is quite obviously ‘somewhere else’ while he’s on the pitch. The system we have now just isn’t working. Let’s see: The defence has been improved, yet we are still letting in goals too easily. The forwards are not scoring anywhere near as many. Yet we have two up front. I will not pretend to be a tactician or qualified to criticise the manager, my eyes are not what they were either, but a blind man can see there is something amiss. What also amazes me is the supporters different opinions although we all watch the same game. We had 60:40 easily yesterday, probably six really good chances and eight fair ones. Not a sniff of a goal.
Norwich had four decent attempts, got two.
Now in my opinion, Thomas played really well, but took some hard, uncompromising tackles and he had to leave. P.O. had a good shot, then lost interest. Cox worked hard, one good shot saved, looked a bit lost. (System??). Mulumbu was superb as was McAuley. Foster we must keep, yet we may even change places with Blues in May. Then we’ll need a goalie.
Jonas is missing again and down the pan we go.
Why, because he drives them on by example. For Heaven’s sake, make him Captain when he returns. Enough for now, except, IT AIN’T THE CROWDS FAULT ! ! ! ! !

Ok under previous two we scored for fun but were
constantly conceding. Under RH our defence has
tightened up and I’m sure when we get usual defence
back we’ll be ok in answer to the inane comment
“DINGLES tamed mighty spurs we had a makeshift
team. Spurs were due a stumble ten since last loss.
Calls for RH to be dumped are stupid it’s true we
were mugged we were far the better team, we had no
rt back and Jonas out is anyone really suprised

Well fellow supporters, quite a mixed array of comments (as usual) I’m so annoyed with the team and results lately, I really don’t know what to say anymore. What is going on at my club? Why can’t we put a nice little run together and break clear. Fortunately, there are another 10 teams in the mix for relegation. I just hope we are not in the bottom 3 come May.
I feel your pain. (Sort it Roy)
Some of the criticism about the defence is missing the point. The defence is now far more organised than it ever was under previous managers. For the 2 goals conceded, they were both very much counter attacks. You could tell the midfielders to stay back and keep everyone marked, but then our strikers would have an even harder job.
The problem is creativity leading to goal chances. We have only scored 8 goals in 11 home games. Either we haven’t got the formation right in the build up from midfield, or the players are not up to it.
I’ve a feeling that we’ve been sussed by a number of managers. I think we wait for teams to re-group in defence before we get the ball into a dangerous area. Yesterday, we had to get through 9 Norwich players, by the time the ball was into a dangerous area.
I hope we strengthen further in this transfer window. I’d like to see another attacking player in midfield, preferably one who can add width, who can get the ball forward quickly, but without just lobbing it forward.

For a minute,I thought I’d accidently logged on to the wolves site.
And judging by some of the comments,I thought we must be stranded well adrift of everyone at the bottom of the table.
We seem to have a mixture of magic roundabout ‘Zebedees’ on here, bouncing around the site with loud criticsm whenever we fail to beat an ‘inferior second rate team’ like Norwich (wait a minute-weren’t they in the TOP half of the prem. even BEFORE yesterday’s game?),combined with a bunch of pathetically ‘diguised dingles’.
There’s a business saying that-
‘you’re either part of the problem,or part of the solution’-
so if the ‘hot-air’ brigade on here can GUARANTEE that they know for certain how Roy could have won us the game yesterday (in the same circumstances, with the same players at his disposal),then they’re part of the solution.
If not, they must be part of the problem, because I assume they were amongst the guys around me yesterday who were constructively ‘booing’ the team at half-time and the final whistle, which will solve everything, won’t it?
Basically,Roy introduced attack-minded players to change the game (despite Shane Long not being fully fit),and that’s what actually happened-
we equalised, then put Norwich under sustained pressure as we went for a win (which these guys DEMAND we do),but what then happened?
Our ‘player of the season’,Mulumbu, lost possession, then they broke with pace and skill down our right side, with our first choice right-backs,Reid and Jones, both missing through injury.So-
Blame Roy for Mulumbu’s mistake?
Blame Roy for our main full backs being injured?
Blame Roy for a well-worked goal on the break scored by Norwich?
As someone here mentioned, even the Norwich fans on the radio said they were fortunate to win the game.
So the away fans say we were unlucky and didn’t deserve to lose.
While the ‘Zebedee’ Albion ‘fans’ here say we were rubbish and it was all RH’s fault that we lost.
So it turns out that,of the two sets of fans,it seems to be some of US that’s actually talkin’ turkey…………..

51. Too right. I’m reminded of the Roman emperor Nero. Now, how can the RBH in his epic 34 post of almost biblical proportions, criticise those of us who want RH out and then say, that despite the ctiticism of JP when he sacked RDM ( Not from me I might add. I wanted him out), this action worked and the critics were never heard from again. ( Not true actually, the whinging about RDM’s demise went on for ever). My point being, if it worked then , it can work now. What’s the difference? Norwich and Swansea are showing us how it can be done on a shoestring, with championship players, but most importantly with young, enthusiastic managers. Also how much experience did RDM have when he was appointed? So please don’t use that old argument against McInnes, who will get the Albion job sooner or later in any case.

All, I actually think yesterday was an improvement on recent home games. The result was poor but overall yesterday we had enough chances to have won the game and perhaps if Long was fit and on from the off we would have taken the chances. Yesterday Norwich scored 2 fantastic counter attacking goals, yes they were from our errors but had we played and won like that eveyone would have said what a professional performance. I may not be popular with this suggestion but if he plays 2 up front at Stoke next week I would play Long and MAF, you cannot fault either of them for effort and work rate.
The home form is shocking, 8 goals at home is appalling as is 2 home wins and 7 losses. This has to turn around soon if we are going to give ourselves a good chance to stay clear of the botton three. Why the change in form from the end of last season from a team that scored regularly and played to attach, I do no think that the cnahge in formation is the only reason.
I think that we have to say that we are not going to have nerve free end of season that we all hoped because we are struggling big time.
I did wonder when the have a go at JP would start. What do you all want? We have a limited budget and only a few weeks ago the majority of posters were saying that we didn’t need to spend too much and there was no need to panic buy. We need to get players fully fit and playing to their full potential and with confidence.
As for the sacking Roy? And get who exactly? I hear Morinho and alike are waiting for the call. Get real. Roy looked absolutely gutted yesterday. He did not lose the ball, Cox did, and Mulumbu air kicked the ball and we were severely punished – they were genuine mistakes. Obviously, none of our posters make mistakes. Sometimes you make me sick. Roy needs us to have confidence in him. I feel pretty down about things too but despite all of the doom and gloom posters, thankfully all is not lost.

I think the most disappointing thing is we seem to have gone backwards from last season. Yes, our defence has improved but at the expense of our attack and we’re stil conceding. Teams are coming to the Hawthorns and sitting we deep. We aren’t playing quick enough and lack the creativity to break down a bank of 8 defenders. Our forward play has been really disappointing this season: I can’t remember the last incisive pass during a home game. The front two aren’t working together and there’s a lack of support from midfield.
There’s no doubt we were mugged yesterday but we still didn’t create enough against an average Norwich side. Time to move back to 451 and instill some creativity into the midfield.

39….If they’ve been some of our best players then God help us. If PO is going to get another 15 goals or more that he stated he would do he’d better hurry up!! How many strikers do we have on the books, 21 Games & 20 goals & again we look at Championship strikers. With RH’s connections I thought we may be looking at Johnson or Zamora or both.

Good sensible post Real Bully Hoo 34.

Before I thought this was just a blip and we would put together a few decent eslts and ride the storm but looking at it closer I’m a little uneasy. Bolton, Blackburn and Wigan are looking like they are clawing thier way up the points defecit not to mention th wolves with a well deserved draw at White Hart Lane and we haven’t been able to put a game to bed recently. The last time that happened we changed manager. The time before hat we were relegated.
Our home form must improve. I don’t want Roy to go, who do we replace him with? There are no stand out decent managers knocking about at the moment so it seems we may need to get someone in on loan to mix it up. We need our injury list to shorten ASAP but most of all, the players need to practice finishing and put our chances to bed at home. If we keep dropping points at home we will be relegated because we can’t expect to get results from the majority of our remaining away fixtures. We need an Arsenal right now, morale is bound to be pretty low, so lets all sing our bolocks off at home from now on in and Roy, sort it out.

Couldn’t make the game so can’t really comment on the performance, but what I will say is that our home form is now real cause for concern. We are in a relegation battle now no two ways about it.
At the start of the season when we looked at this run of fixtures, I’m sure we all said these games are ones we should pick up points from. Looking at the same games now however, I’m not so sure. We have Stoke next and then Fulham – 2 places where we never get anything, we then have Swansea and Sunderland who are both in form teams.
There are several problems that I can see, Odemwingie for one isn’t the player he was last season, that’s pretty obvious. Whether he wants to be somewhere else I’m not sure but if it carries on something has to give.
There is no need to panic despite the negative vibe I’m giving here, just some areas that need addressing urgently. Remember, a couple of good results would change the picture completely, however the longer the bad run goes on, the more difficult it will be to get out of it.
Come on Roy and Albion, get it sorted!

Get off Hopdgson back lads, this time last year he came in and was the saviour. He knew he needed to spend to get a decent squad & all he has been given is a few bob to buy Long & what a great signing. Yesterday without 3 very key players & it was obvious Brunty, Jonas & Gera would be missed. What is Jeremy doing, we are a Prem side & we spend about 4.5 mill on 1 Player in August to survive in this competitive division. Now Roy has given his requirements and is it another January scenario when every Manager – Megson, Robson, Mowbray & now Roy just hit there heads against a Peace brick wall. Roy needs support at this time with injuries & certain players showing lack of form – Shorey, Dorrans & Odemwingie. Come on Jeremy you need not be predictable, how about supporting this Manager, now before it is too late, we have the money even if to support in the loan market and you cannot blame this Manager for the current situation.

72 Bully,
I haven’t even looked at the wolves site, but it didn’t take Mystic Meg to predict what posts would appear on here.
It was SO predictable that, despite Norwich fans saying we didn’t deserve to lose,we would get the Albion ‘doom and gloomers’ telling us that we are heading for Armegeddon, that everything is ‘imploding’,and the Hawthorns will soon resemble the aftermath of a disaster on a biblical scale.
Added to this, with wolves getting a point more than us this week,we have droves of pathetically disguised dingles ‘mouthing off’,due to the excitement of getting slightly closer to the Baggies in the league table.
By calling themselves ‘Fake TAN,Kid A,Smethwick Baggie,Bangkok, etc.,they believe they’re wearing Harry Potter invisibilty cloaks,so they can’t be detected.

When I first started going to games as a nine year old I had difficulty in getting a sense of perspective.
I always thought Albion should win every game especially at home, I couldn’t accept that the other team might have better players or that luck might take a hand. If we lost it had to be somebody’s fault, never my favourites though not Chippy Clark or Bobby Hope or Alex Jackson always somebody like Chuck Drurie or Stan Jones or the Manager because they were easier targets.
I grew out of this in a couple of years and realised that a million and one things can go wrong behind the scenes and stopped having my own little witch hunts. In other words I started thinking like a grown up. I suppose it just takes some a bit longer.
59 Smethwick.
I’m also a ‘Smethwick Baggie’ are you sure you want to throw your lot in with Bangkok?
But to get to your points. “The whinging went on forever.” First I remember a number of people saying they thought RDM should have been given longer (probably the same ones now saying get off Roy’s back.) There were some whinging about Roy’s appointment (not the same ones) but this stopped as soon as we were winning games.
“My point being if it worked then it can work now.” So you’re saying that every time we have a couple of bad games we change the manager? Really?
You cherry pick a couple of examples that have worked but ignore all the ones that haven’t. Neither came to their clubs in the PL, RDM brought us up but then struggled. I didn’t say we should never go for DMc as manager just that it would be a massive gamble at this moment in time. But not much of a gamble if you’re playing Championship Manager where you can always start a new game if it goes belly up.
62 RF.
Are you saying those four haven’t played well? Do you go to games? As my friend Smethwick Baggie points out, Norwich beat us with predominantly Championship players as did Swansea against Arsenal yesterday.
76 DID.
Thank you. My post at 76 wasn’t an attack on Wolves but pointing out to our own that we have our share of these type of posters. I’m guessing you’re branded as a Happy Clapper over there because you don’t want to sack everybody at every setback. Cheers.

I don’t think that I’ve ever been so sad, dismayed and frustrated as I am this morning.I’m not perfect,I’m not the most intelligent bloke in the world,I don’t think I’m always right and I try to consider other peoples point of view but one thing that will never waver is my support for West Bromwich Albion Football Club.
There have been times when that has been tested enough for me to vent my frustration, one was after a particular dismal performance under Ron Wylie I stormed into the offices demanding they sack him,I’m not saying it was me,as my mates jokingly said at the time but they sacked him the following week.
Another was when we signed Graham Roberts and I returned my season ticket cause I refused to watch animals and during my exile we lost to Woking in the cup,I got in my car and stormed up the ground and into the offices to angrily protest, the escorted me out with 2 police dogs.
Now they were times to test your patience but now in this changed “modern” game of football we have steadily clawed our way back to the top flight and after last season fans hopes were high, perhaps a little too high.
We had a tough start to the season and after only a few months at the club with Roy trying to find his best team we climbed to 9th in the Prem, we’ve had a terrible time with injuries, two important players out long term and what happens?PANIC.
I think by now you all know my views on how important the crowd is and the only thing we can and should do to help us stop in the prem is support and not berate the team and I can’t really comment on Saturdays game as I was swapping between a bad feed on the net and commentary on Albion Player where Chris Brunt was a guest but when asked how important the crowd is to the team Brunt’y said that when they are playing well and the crowd is behind the team it really lifts the players but when they are not performing at the best, and that happens to us all at times, and the crowd is quiet they can hear all the “moans and groans” and that affects the players too.
I know I’m banging on again and I want to say more, don’t bother some will say but I’ve got to stop there just had a message, my friggin’ donkeys have escaped again,be back later.

I heard Alan Pardew this morning talking about Newcastle’s 1-0 win over QPR. He said “we knew they’d be fired up with a new manager and would come at us hard so we set up not to give anything away.”
I’m sure that like our fans with Norwich, Newcastle fans would have expected to beat QPR comfortably. In the PL there are no easy games and I think we can learn a lot from Pardew’s wise words. We start with a point at Stoke, if we can stop them scoring we’ll come away with at least a point.

Kev and Bully,
it won’t make any difference to the moaners, but us and some others here have often pointed out how things have greatly improved at Albion over the last 10-15 years, but some people completely lose sight of what advances have been made.
I know this is on a different scale, but the principle is still the same-
recently (I forget which weekend),I was watching Sky Sports News at full time, and the report came over from Chelsea that they’d just lost at home to Villa.
You could clearly hear the reaction of Chelsea fans in the background.
It then switched back to the studio, and Jeff Stelling (a lifelong Hartlepool fan) looked in shocked amazement.
He said ‘is that really Chelsea fans I can hear booing?-
don’t they realise what they’ve had over the last few years?-Good heavens!!!’.
Jeff’s club has never achieved,or won anything, but he loves ‘em to bits, and as an intelligent man he knows you have to look at the limited resources and problems that a football club can face, and take it on the chin.
As for Chelsea, well it’s rumoured they’re being given a ‘war chest’ of up to 150 million quid to spend on new players.
So that should please the fans.
Well,at least until they lose the next time at home, and start booing the team off again.
Sometimes,everything is still not enough……

Maybe played well was a bit too far, but we certainly didn’t play badly. We dominated the possesion and overan Norwich in the first half. Hit the bar, had shot cleared off the line, keeper produced 2 very good saves all before they’d even had a shot. In fact the closest they’d come to our goal before they scored the first was when our keeper kicked the ball against them. I stand by what i said if we were more clinical in front of goal and Mulumbu and Cox hadn’t made individual errors then we could have won the game by 2 or 3 goals. It is not Hodgson’s fault if the players commit individual errors or fail to take chances. But to say we played badly is incorrect and in my opinion to call for the managers head at this stage where we are closer to top half then relegation is ludicrous. But that could be just my positive outlook sonny boy.
First, ignore the obvious Wulfies’ posts. They are high, quite rightly, because they took a point at Spurs and good luck to them.
The sensible ones enjoy, the Deluded Dingles come on here to gloat like spiteful brats.
Second, let’s stop pretending all is well. The injuries have been frightening, but overall, the replacements have played well.
However, losing SEVEN at home out of eleven is relegation form, pure and simple.
Third, we all know the players like it better when the crowd roar them on and they don’t like it when we are quiet. The difference?
a) we are playing well, WITH SPIRIT and FIRE.
b) we are playing badly and showing nothing will change.
I happen to think we played well on Saturday and got suckered with two break-away goals. That doesn’t mean I was happy because our shooting was POOR. We made their goalie look top class when we hit the target and Row Z needing insurance when we didn’t. My final view is we don’t play it up front quickly enough. Thus we are looking at 8 or 9 defenders when we get there. A lost ball then (or two in the Norwich game) and we are wide open at the back.
The subs made on Saturday were done at the right time too, gave them a chance to adjust.
I hear Tchoyi is saying he’s off soon. I’d do the same if I were him.

Why is everything presented in extreme stark contrasts?
Peace should dip more into his own pocket or sell the club to Sheik Urmoney. Neither is a realistic solution to Albion’s situation.
TRBH makes a lot of valid points, but they still fit within the “framework of debate” we’ve had for years here about the Boards ‘safety first’ approach versus say Leeds United’s wreckless one. Aren’t there other ways of generating investiment in WBA beyond these two extremes? I don’t see ambition at WBA; I see business like conservatism which tries to balance the books and little else.
Sacking Hodgson is a stupid idea for a whole range of reasons but the main one being that it wouldn’t change the fundamental weaknesses that exist. I’ll also suggest quality isn’t simply a matter of judging if someone is a Championship/Premier League player – it goes far deeper than that.
I was critical of Hodgson’s tactics and comments after the Everton game, but I can’t see how he was responsible for the defeat on Saturday unless he and his coaching staff told defenders to care more about their zone positioning than getting close to attackers.
We’re frustrated and fearful, but wildly hitting out at Hodgson or the players isn’t going to produce positive results. Albion does need new blood but not just on the pitch.

93) No, I wouldn’t, and I will tell for why, if you look through Fletcher’s goals, how many have been stunner’s? or you have thought well that was class? He has been very, very fortunate, tap ins, deflections and alike, and that’s good luck to him, he is a lucky poacher, but luck always changes, compare that with P.O.s goals (when he scores admittedly) but I say again luck will change, last month we had three different players up for goal of the month, this month we are struggling to get three goals, but the class is there, that’s the difference, and the wheel will turn again, because ours are based on class, not luck. Odem has the class to score one, two, even three goals when he is on his game, who knows, could be the next game, might not be for another ten, can you see Fletcher scoring a hat-trick at any point?
Has for Mick declaring him “one of the best strikers” because he is currently 7th in the top scorers, remind where Odem finished last season? and do you think Fletcher will achieve that, I don’t.
For me there is only decent player at Wolves, and that’s Hennesey, lets see how good Wolves are if they get to lose that one player for a few games.

Gosh with these threads I think I need a lie down and get the Prozac out?
The game should have been won in the first half but lady luck was not with us. Norwich were a poor side that capitalised on two mistakes. Yes we do have a problem with scoring goals at home and it needs to be addressed.
I do think we spend to much time around the penalty box trying to cut in and out rather than getting your shot in. Having said that we played ok.
Not sure of what is going on behind the scenes, who is in or out of favour but maybe the players we have got dont suit Roys style of play? Where is Inside Man?
However to get rid of him now would only make things worse. Our support over the last few home games has been poor. We need to get behind the boys and be the 12th man.
A positive point is we got a penalty with Mike Dean. After all this time of felt we was robbed of many one finally turns up. Maybe the penalty turned the game in the favour on Norwich bacause after that Thomas was injured and went off. He did terrorise there defence. By the way we miss Brunty.

I AM looking at the here and now.
And at this point in time,in the here and now,we’re a Premiership club, one of the ‘elite’ 20 in the country, with many other clubs envious of us.
The overall standard of our squad is such that Championship clubs are desperately trying to sign our young lads and reserve players on loan.
And millions of football fans around the world make the effort to watch us ‘live’ every week.
It seems that many, many people admire us.
Embarrassingly, judging by many posts on here,it looks like it’s just some of our own fans that seem to want to attack us,and drag the club down.
And what’s really sad is that it’s hard to find the difference between ‘disguised’ wolves fans having a pop at us here, and Albion fans saying the same things as them.
And I still haven’t had anyone come forward with the secret formula that would have made a win a certainty on Saturday.

All a matter of opinions it’s what makes football great. I don’t think the desire was in question, there’s no doubt in my mind the players were trying, but i agree with the majority we could have moved the ball a bit quicker. The only 2 games where i’ve come away thinking we’ve played awful was Swansea away and Everton at home, Arsenal away but you can’t expect to win there every year! Other than that i don’t think we’ve been outplayed in many games and could quite easily have an extra 6 – 12 points which would have seen us look very comfortable. Just need to start taking our chances when created.

Wall Heath,
Osaze has much more to his game, as you well know. What we really need is our players to keep up with him so when he crosses the ball, we have players in the box. Also how many times did corner kicks sail right over the penalty area clear of everybody. Watched Barcelona last night, They move forward as a unit as soon as their back four reach halfway, they peel away and any opposition forwards who stay up-field are tightly marked to lessen the danger of them breaking away. Where was our right back when Norwich broke for their second present?, our defenders are not tight enough allowing opponents to settle on the ball. Remember Graham Williams? their first touch was usually their last as he was so tight. Any side severely weakened by nine top players injured would feel the pinch, so stop listening to stupid Dingles on here.

I am frustraed at our inability to break teams down, we look good away from home as a counter attacking team but if teams park the bus we look at little devoid of ideas.
Comparing this to the team of last season its a little difficult to not put the blame at Roys door.
I think we have to much quality to go down, but do not think we will look at the end of season and see it as a progreesion from last year. In truth injuries have not helped but all clubs have to deal with this.
Mid season report reads must do better

The number of posts on here is a great illustration of why this is the greatest game on the planet; and one of the best leagues to be in. Debate, frustration and a few side swipes from dingles boyant with a good point at the lane, just to stir our pot. Some great points made – some not so.
It was not a good result on Saturday, but it was not the entire performance or tactics that gave us that result. Moments of madness cost us. Injuries will ease and performances will get better; both individually and collectively.
We are a club whose budget will largely determine a modest expectation. We will have sticky patches to endure. Let’s get some perspective before we throw out the baby with the bathwater! Sacking Roy would be madness. Sort his contract out, give him some reassurance and with Olsson and others returning we can get back to business.
This is the same sqaud that won at Blackburn and Newcastle less than a month ago and had us crowing. Wonder how quickly the euphorics will return if we beat Stoke….
Now is the time for us to show a bit of faith and patience.

I know you said you didn’t want me to address you again but if that’s the case I at least reserve the right to reply this one last time.
Many times on here you and others have accused me and others of ‘bullying’ anybody that doesn’t agree with us. I’ve always tried to keep the debate on football and not get personal excepting the odd light hearted jape. I said you had called matt an idiot for which I apologise to you, hands up I got it wrong but what you said, “Sorry son, but you write complete and utter rubbish and you would be better taking up knitting.” isn’t a reply I’d have taken kindly to in reply to what were to very reasonable posts. Sorry if that’s sanctimonious I’ll join matt in the knitting circle.
If you think my posts about football are sanctimonious then fine, I’m a big boy and I can take a bit of criticism. In fact I answered one of my own posts the other day accusing myself of pretty much the same thing ie being up my own backside.
I try not to fall out with other posters on here but on that occasion I just thought you were a bit out of order and said so. If you don’t want me to reply to you I’ll certainly honour your wishes but with sadness because I’ve always enjoyed our sparring sessions.

You say that I think that anybody who disagrees with me is not an Albion fan when the meaning behind my comments is that I cannot understand the criticism at a time when the team need all the support they can get and surely it’s better to support rather than berate.

We are winning games away because the other teams attack us and leave space at the back. Being ‘away’ we move the ball quicker upfield,
one reason being to ease the pressure for defenders, a bit of respite. Now if we are all good little Baggies, we shall go to bed tonight, kneel down, hands clasped tightly, eyes closed and say, “Please God, let us beat Stoke on Saturday and I promise to go to Church on Sunday. Amen”. There now, that was nice wasn’t it? Watcher mean, His Phone’s always off the hook when we play The Potters?

I still have faith in Hodgson and believe we will look better once the injured players are able to play and train properly, especially Olssen. However Roy surely has to admit that Cox is never going to be good enough for the Premiership and that we need to sign an alternative left back to Shorey – the man never tackles and how he can be captain is a mystery to me.
I thought Scharner was poor Saturday but I think he should be in the team for Sat at Stoke. Suprisingly Morrison was off his game on Sat as well but I think that he has lost that speed to be able to play wide now and has played really well this season when he has been central. Where oh where are the wide players we need and don’t say Thomas.
I have to say that I agree with the many people who think that we are much better off playing a 451 and have yet to see two of our forwards play as a real partnership.

Have been a trtue Baggie since 1966 and watched from overseas since 1996 – I just dont understand some of the negative uninformed poorly thought through drivel on here. Either Wulfies causing childish trouble or low IQ Baggies with no idea of the game.
This is the best Albion sde for many decades in the best financial and squad position possible for a club with our resources and support.
RH is the best possible coach we could have hoped for and the alternatives if the fools were to get thier way is what?
I am positive we will reach mid table safety this year and another year in the Premier will strngthen the credibility of the club to belong there.
Lets wait till the end of the season before using Swansea and Norwich as expamples – remember Hull, Burnley etc who have all started well and fallen away when the injuries mount.
We are a small club who have to punch above our weight to stay up – no one ever said it would be easy.
Birmingham had the money – did they manage to stay up? Leeda? Bradford? Pompey? etc etc.
Get Real guys and get behind one of the few family clubs left in the top flight.

I thought it was a decent performance undone by individual errors. I agree with Sherlock that Fortune and Long look our best pairing. On Saturday Odemwingie gave as poor a performance as I ave seen for a very long time. Cox had his chance but is at best a championship player. After their keeper luckily fumbled a shot onto the bar and Morrison had that one headed off the line I had a feeling that it was not going t be our day. An unfortunate mistake by Mulumbu giving the ball away for their winner but he was doing all of Scharners work befor he went off.

What a bunch of guff on here. We deserved to beat Norwich, but then again, we did not deserve to win at their place. So a good haul of 1.5 points per game for each team (better than 2 draws).

Their you go again!Replying in anger,I don’t think I’ve ever questioned your loyalty to WBA.
What I do question is the quick fire negative comments when things are not going right for your club, a club that has clawed it’s way back to the most admired league in the world without the monopoly money that most clubs have either borrowed, and still owe or have sold their soles for.
I’ve also criticise you for booing which for the same reasons I think is out of order plus it does no good for the moral of the players.
Obviously I don’t know the content of the shouting that reduced your voice to a whisper on Saturday [bet the wife was pleased] but from your past record after a so called “bad performance” I’d put money on it that majority of it wasn’t complementary.
I can’t understand why my comments rile you so much when all I want is for the fans to hold fire with their criticism at a time when with all the injuries, a well respected manager who’s only just completed 12mths at the club, 5 points above the drop zone,4 off 10th, then surely it would be more helpful to be positive rather than negative.

In the words of Celine Dion “It’s getting serious”.
The selection of Cox after a hat trick against Cardiff Reserves smacks of desperation to me. On Saturday, there was no passion, no leadership and naive defending, all of which contributed to a poor performance/defeat. We have certainly gone backwards since the end of last season and I’m sure that Jeremy has noticed that as well.
I can see it in the stars – Hodgson out and Neil Warnock in, although I’d prefer Dave Jones. Both of the latter have experience in getting clubs promoted from the Championship.

Got to be Max. Glad we’re ‘friends’ again and just to clear up. I know it was none of my business but matt usually posts reasonable good sense and is unstintingly polite, as he was in his replies to you. I just thought you were a bit OTT in your reaction.
You seem to mean by ‘sitting on the fence’ that I don’t have a knee jerk raction to every reversal. I’m sorry but I will keep on doing this unless I see a lack of effort. At half time I said to the bloke next to me ‘this is a cracking open game.’ We got caught twice for overextending ourselves and were unlucky to lose. As long as we learn from it I don’t see the problem.
I think Lone Throstle probably sums us up well (perhaps not that good that it needed repeating) but very good post all the same and I’ll set my sights on being more like Cyril and Rocket.

I apologise for attacking your use of the English language. I don’t do this as a rule because it’s unfair and the fact that I combined it with one of my other failings of sarcasm makes it all the poorer. I was angry at your attack on Roy Hodgson and posted in haste but that is no excuse. Sorry.

I’ll leave JtH and WONOH to have their own opinions of what you say,but reading your posts on here over a period of time, you always seem to be friendly,fair-minded and intelligent,so thanks for acknowledging what some of us have said.
I only normally ‘have a go’ at the bunch of wolves fans who come here to ‘stir it up’,I have nothing against ‘proper’ fans from other clubs, and often chat to them before a game in The Vine pub.
What I’m ashamed of is the ‘witch-hunt’ that some of these Albion ‘fans’ have on here against Roy Hodgson, similar to the abuse that Mick gets on your side.
I’m not a personal friend of Roy’s,and I’m not a big fan of his style of football, but he’s getting unfair stick from people with a ‘scapegoat’ mentality.
Let’s look at it in a nutshell-
Roy was appointed to ‘save us’ from almost certain relegation last season, and he succeeded in spectacular style.
A couple of weeks ago,we were halfway through this season, and at the time we were lying just inside the top half of the premiership.
And these guys say he’s a useless failure.
But they never say a word when we play well and win games, they just sit and wait until we lose, then rant on here, breathing fire.
Which reminds me of years ago when mobs would roam the countryside with burning torches to hunt someone down.
Sad,sad,sad.
