Transfers, hat tricks and FA Cup – it’s all going on
Friday 13th January 2012, 1:51PM GMT.
Strange how things seem to come in three’s these days, writes blogger Jarrod Hill. Simon Cox goals, games against Norwich, and the amount of fans in the Smethwick End last Saturday.
Saturday’s game was a bit of surreal for me, usually we are packed in tighter than a ducks backside at the back of the Smethwick with noise levels that can make my brain rattle.
But with fewer than 13,000 turning out for a third round FA Cup game, me and Laura had empty seats galore round us.
OK, maybe that says more about my personal demeanour and my ability to repel people, (especially women) but it clearly shows that the club needs to keep looking at its pricing structure for such games.
The stay away fans missed a very entertaining game and it will be interesting to see what the club decide to do re prices for our fourth round tie.
Cardiff put up a bit of a fight, but the truth is with more clinical finishing we could have scored eight or nine.
Cardiff themselves put out a weakened side due to their League Cup semi final with Crystal Palace, and with ourselves having a number of injuries the two sides had an unusual look to them.
Simon Cox enjoyed his day and netted a superb hat trick.
His second was particularly good and with Shane Long still 50/50 with his back injury it’s good to have Coxy full of confidence heading into an important run of games for us.
Strangely enough this weekend’s opponents just happen to be the team drawn out of the hat to face us again in a few weeks time in the FA Cup.
Norwich have been the surprise package so far this season and Paul Lambert is a manager I believe will go on to manage a much larger club.
Our first win of the season came at Carrow Road when we won 1-0 and I hope they provide us with our first double of the season this Saturday at the Hawthorns.
Reports suggest our injury situation is easing up with a number of our key players fighting to be fit for this important game.
I have stated before that I see the next six games as playing a very important role in where we will find ourselves in the league come the end of the season and starting with a win against Norwich would be the perfect start.
If we could take nine points from our next six games I believe we would have enough in the tank to ensure we avoid relegation.
It would leave us on 31 points and two more wins from our remaining games would give us 37 points and I would bet the farm on that being enough to stay up this season.
All ifs buts and maybes I know, but the point I am trying to make while getting a little Carol Vorderman, (now there’s a thought)…… Sorry where was I?
Oh yes, the point I was trying to make is how important I see the next six games, with fixtures against teams who are all closely bunched up in the league table it gives us a chance to either sink into the dog fight or pull ourselves clear.
Keeping our stars fit and free from injury will certainly help as will any additions Roy Hodgson manages to make during this month.
New recruits in the month of January may not be the norm for us baggies but rumours are abound that Roy has been given the green light to freshen up the squad.
Scott Allan has arrived from Dundee United and although many of us have heard little and seen even less of this lad he does come with a number of ringing endorsements.
A number of respected managers in the game have stated that they see this lad as being a star in the making and I hope they are all right.
Having played only a handful of games this season due to him openly declaring his intention not to sign a new deal I am unsure whether we will see much of him before next season.
However as we have seen with Craig Dawson and George Thorne, Roy Hodgson has no fear in playing young players if he thinks they are ready.
Other transfer targets being mentioned in the press include Peter Whittingham (Cardiff, midfielder), Rhys Williams (Middlesbrough, defender), Cristian Rodriguez (FC Porto, winger) and Patrick Helmes (Vfl Wolfsburg, striker).
I was surprised to learn that Peter Whittingham is only 27 years old, he seems to have been around for a long time.
I remember when we sold Jonathon Greening I was suggesting Peter as a like for like replacement but maybe with a possible League Cup final appearance at Wembley and Cardiff pushing for promotion the timing for a deal is not quite right.
Rhys Williams looks like a Premier League player in waiting.
Whenever I have seen him play he looks a really good prospect, but with Middlesbrough looking to gain promotion and under no pressure to sell this again looks like an unlikely deal, but who knows, Tony Mowbray might feel like he owes us one?
Yes I know, I have just read it back!!!
The Cristian Rodriguez rumour looks to have real legs in it. He plays as a left winger, is apparently available, and with Chris Brunt out injured would provide another option.
Dan Ashworth was even spotted scouting him last week, although I would love to know who spotted him?
As rumours go Cristian Rodriguez coming to us seems to make sense. Which leads me onto Patrick Helmes.
This guy is a quality player, I have been known to watch the Bundesliga and up until the last twelve months this guy was one of the hottest strikers around.
His goal scoring record is very good and the quality in the German top division means he would find the transition to English football easier than many others from other nations.
However I would be amazed if this deal happened. Firstly his wife is pregnant and that usually means a reluctance to move, especially to another country.
Secondly, I would imagine this guy has many other suitors, probably a lot higher up the food chain than us.
But the fact we are looking at this quality of player shows that we are looking for the players to take us to the next level.
Anyway here’s hoping Dan Ashworth and Roy Hodgson can get the players they want, and more importantly here’s hoping our medical team can keep our stars fit and healthy.
They are going to be needed, starting with this weekend’s game against Norwich.
Up the Baggies.

The most relaxed I’ve felt heading into a transfer window with the current league status. Just to reiterate my point from yesterday evening, I believe Nicky Maynard & Kevin Davies were due at the training ground today to discuss a move and to have a look around. Cox and Fortune would make way.

We need to get moving and bring in a couple of new faces soon before deadline day a striker and possible a winger to cover Blunty for the rest of the season as it is of importance as the goal tally needs to be increased a provan quality player would help and we need to strengthan the back line incase of further injuries so come on at the baggies we need to do some chasing and sign them before compition gets to great and is took out of our hands.
The next couple of weeks will be interesting to see the comings and goings at the Hawthorns.

Albion have been delt a very lucky January/Febuary. A definte helping hand by the fixture list to help them reach survival.
If you manage to blow it after this then you dont deserve to stay up.
If only Blackburn,Bolton,Wigan and Wolves could be shown such favoritism at a pivotal time of the season then no one could complain that the dice is loaded.
The only luck Wolves have had this season is bad.
Fortune definitely dosnt favour the brave.
As me old Nan always used to say “its better to be born lucky than rich”.

Interesting Inside Man. Any other news on the transfer front? I’m really hoping we get at least one winger, preferably Rodriguez.

If Bolton are prepared to let a Davies go can we have Mark rather than Kevin?
I must admit i have seen little of Nicky Maynard in recent years, but i would have to ask, is he better than Simon Cox?

If it was up to me i’d take Mark Davies unfortunately it’s out of my hands. As far as i’m aware Kevin Davies and Owen coyle don’t get on and he’s looking to move K.Davies on to get in a new striker. They are prepared to loan him out as long as the loanee covers the wages. There is no other Transfer news from me, as ever i’m not saying it’s 100% right and going to happen it’s just what i’ve heard within the past 48 hours. If any other news comes along i’ll pass it on.
Just a question Cox or Long to start this weekend if Long is 70% ish fit??

Great read Jarod as always! Iv done a bit of youtube scouting on Rodriguez and he does look like a good player who offers alot and with brunt out atm he could be the perfect replacement! Iv also seen Helmes a few times and I agree a player of his quality would really help us but at the same time getting him down the Hawthorns would be a task! Can you shed some light on the Craig Gardner rumours? I think he would be a great signing personaly!

Sorry mate the only thing i know re Gardner is that MON does not want to let him go. Sunderland have injury problems akin to ours so his departure would depend on them getting replacements in. Apparently he is homesick and any transfer would involve a fee not a loan, which could possibly rule us out. Not sure where i would see him fitting in to our side anyway.
Inside Man
Good question, but i wouldnt play any player who is only 70% fit. Cox deserves to keep his place for tomorrows game, so PO and Cox, with Long on the bench if he is fit enough.

3 Lonely.
I think you’re losing your touch, as wind ups go this is very heavy handed for you. While you were getting off to your flying start against Blackburn and Fulham we were playing catch-up after narrow defeats to Man Ure, Chelsea and Arsenal. It was also a full strength Man Ure not the shadow team that’s been playing lately nor were any of them distracted by European commitments.
It’s widely accepted that it does a team good to have an easy run at the start of the season, get points in the bag and build confidence. I’m guessing this feeble deriding of our ‘luck’ is setting the groundwork for the excuses for this years relegation battle. Good luck, I think you’re going to need it.

Of all the rumours I agree Rodrigez looks most likely. I have it from local press that the Maynard deal will not happen for the quoted 2M+. As I was told to suggest Albion in January would blow 2m on a player from the championship with just 5 months on his contract seems a little illogical.
Maynard is a lot quicker than Cox over the ground and can finish well – though whether as well as the Irishman remains to be seen. Cox has the Euro bit between his teeth which for me adds even more incentive for him. Maynard may be a deal to tie up now for the summer on a free.
Getting a back four ready for tomorrow is the immediate priority. And making sure we play more on the front foot, than the counter. Norwich will work every blade of grass tomorrow and we have to match them every step of the way.

Hi Jarrod.
I agree with you and No1 IM. We seem to be in a good place despite the injuries. It will be interesting to see if any of the deals come off because you always look to improve but unlike many below and around us I don’t think we’re too desperate if nobody comes in.
Still think tomorrow will be a tough game and unless Long is 100% I’d leave him on the bench and start with a full of confidence Simon Cox. If Long is fit you have to go with him though. Same with Olsson, if he’s fit I think we can afford to give him a rest on the bench.

as you can see, i don’t always heed her good advice

Didn’t see to many opposing fans worried about Favoritism at the start of the last two seasons when we had really tough opening games.
I don’t know what Cox has to do to seek approval with some, he gets one starting chance in a blue moon, scores three goals and still gets considered as driftwood !!

Can we have some singing from the Birmingham Road end tomorrow please!

If he is fit Olsson has to play he is too good a player and a leader to leave out. If Long isn’t 100% then I would play Cox and leave Long on the bench. I think we need a bit of width in the team without Brunt and Gera, so maybe “The Onion” is the answer, mind you hope he doesn’t turn out to be a Turnip !

Hi Jarrod,
I’m pleased to see you’ve set a points total you’d be happy with over the next six games.
I say that because last time I recall you ‘setting us a target’ was before Xmas, then the Baggies exceeded the amount of points you hoped for.
Let’s hope you bring ‘em luck, and it happens again.
On the subject of potential ‘new’ signings, have you ever wondered what someone’s thinking or saying in private?
The reason is that Scott Allan’s been signed as ‘one for the future’,and in a recent interview he said he chose to come to Albion because he wants to play in the English premiership.
So do you think Roy sat in a meeting with JP and said-
‘the lad’s expecting top flight football with us,so you can’t possibly let him down, can you?-
how about giving us an extra few million quid to bring in even more quality to add to our current crop of superstars?’.
Do you think that’s what happened?
No…..?
Funnily enough,neither do I.
(p.s.- but never fear,we’ve already brought in the man who will help ‘guide us to success’ this month-
it’s that masked hero himself-
‘The Loan Arranger’………
ok,ok,I’m goin’………….;)

Maynard talks went well.
Sharner, Mulumbu & Thomas all start tomorrow. Long on the bench so Cox will start. Jones is out injured in training and Jara will replace him.
I’ve also been told Odemwingie will leave either this window or in the summer.
Hodgson still unhappy at Odemwingie over the injury statement and Tchoyi is also unhappy at being a bit part player and wants to leave.

3 Lonely,lonely,lonely-
at the start of the season, when we bemoaned our tough fixture list, did you not read your fellow wulfs’ posts on here,saying-
‘what difference does it make-we all have to play every club twice over the season, don’t we?’.
I thought with your high I.Q.(ahem….),you could work that one out.
After all, didn’t you get a G.C.S.E. in ‘adding things up’?
(or was it you who had a maths exam for your 11 plus, and you then said to the Teacher ’11 plus what…….?’).
Anyway,I don’t really understand why you’re whinging about wolves having to play the ‘top’ clubs at the present time-
over the last 3 or 4 months,they couldn’t beat the other ones……….

3) Lone, it wouldn’t make any difference to the Wolves what fixture list you had, remember last season? all the Wulfies, including yourself, telling us how they would not only catch us, but over take us, week after week, because “we” had the much tougher run in? well they were 50% right!
13) baggiescomeon, remember Matt Le Tissier, scored a hat-trick in England’s 4-1 ‘B’ international defeat of Russia at Loftus Road in 1998, and still couldnt make the full England team? stand up Simon Cox!
