Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
West Brom 0 Everton 1
Sunday 1st January 2012, 2:27PM GMT.
A late winner by Everton substitute Victor Anichebe condemned Albion to defeat in a wretched New Year’s Day clash at The Hawthorns, writes Steve Madeley.
The Baggies failed to follow up their excellent end to 2011 with a similar performance and were punished by Anichebe on 87 minutes.
The Nigerian striker forced the ball home after a goalmouth scramble to settle a game of few chances and little quality.
And Albion, who had lost Jonas Olsson to a pre-match calf injury, suffered a further blow when captain Chris Brunt limped off in the closing stages.
The first half was a complete non-event with neither side creating a clearcut scoring chance.
Shane Long sent a full-stretch header wide of the target from a Chris Brunt cross after a neat Albion build-up.
Ben Foster then made a good block from a Jack Rodwell shot for Everton after pawing away a high ball in a goalmouth scramble.
And Rodwell sent a difficult glancing header wide just before half-time from a Leighton Baines corner.
But it was little surprise to see the scoresheet blank at the break.
Albion should have been in front two minutes after the restart, however, when a James Morrison header sent Peter Odemwingie clear of the Everton bench.
The Nigerian was presented with a tricky chance but he fired over when he should have tested Tim Howard in the Toffees’ goal.
Long was another cross, this time from Jerome Thomas, drift away from him agonisingly at the far post on the hour-mark.
And the first effort on target arrived on the hour-mark but even then a low shot from Anichebe was straight at Foster.
But it was Anichebe who opened the scoring just three minutes from time.
Albion failed to deal with a high ball from the right and it dropped for the Toffees substitute to finish a scruffy move with a neat finish.

We were never at the races, even us fans couldn’t muster any energy,so much for early new years day kick off. The players from both sides looked like they were still asleep. For once Hodgson has to take the blame for this one as substitutions where needed to combat the ones Moyes made. Oh well lesson learned and time to move on, let’s hope Spurs have an off day Tuesday. Happy New Year to you all. Boing Boing.

ROYS PLOY. Totally wrong. This wasn’t Man City this was Everton. Play for a draw you might lose, play for a win you might draw.
Roy said it was frustrating, it was embarrassing. So why didn’t you sort it? No Passion, no confidence, no vision, no determination. Moyes made three changes POSITIVE ! They won we chewed our fingernails and lost.

A friend commented at half time, “This is turgid stuff”. I corrected him, “I think you mean turdage stuff Martin”. Oh how we larfed!
I have seen some boring games since 1944, this was right up there with the very worst.
Changes were needed, we could all see that. So who on our side couldn’t? Players on the bench must feel helpless when they see junk like that and they can’t got on in spite of it. I can take losing. Just don’t bore me to death.

Hi Jack.
Watched it on the computer. God it was awful and you have the audacity to use the term Europe in one of your posts. Comedian or what?

The word going through my mind was: “predictable” – this was what I was getting at last week with regards to Albion’s historical mentality.
Serve me right for poking fun at Villa and Wolves recently. Apart from Morrison the majority of outfield players lacked both skill and imagination. Football is a team game and Peter Odemwingie needs to remember that next time he let’s his ego get the better of him.

The game was on live over here, observations:
1) Moyes made 3 offensive substitutions, Roy made none (until he was forced to bring Dorrans on with 30 seconds remaining) and we were the home team. Why didn’t he change it when it was apparent we weren’t creating anything at all.
2) Long and Odemwingie still not clicking and sometimes Pete just doesn’t seem to want to pass the ball to Shane. Maybe it’s me but I’m noticing it in most games. Maybe it was more apparent today because both had shockers.
3) I thought Dawson, Billy and Shorey did ok.
4) Disappointing to get up at 7:30am here after 5 hours of sleep and witness what was served up.
Happy New Year all.

Absolute shocker of a game, I’ve had more fun at the dentist! Not one player did anything worthy of note. I never normally criticise Hosgson, but not to make a sub till 2 mins into added time is baffling to say the least. Tim Howard won’t have many easier afternoons than that.
Really poor, an opportunity missed against a poor Everton side.

Only Albion could shoot themselves in the foot so spectacularly!Back to square one.Tactically inept from start to finish, did Mr.Hodgson realise we were playing at HOME against Everton and not Man City again. How can you play at home to (no disrespect here) to a poor Everton team with 2 banks of four behind the ball when the opposition only play 1 up front.I am also very concerned to hear our manager say after the game that he did’nt think he had anyone on the bench who would make any difference to the result of the game. These comments from an experienced manager do not fill me with any great confidence that suggest anything other than another relegation dogfight is on the cards

Rubbish performance and yet we (ROY) did not change things no subs used (until forced at the end). Roy if the subs are not good enough to use why are we paying they why not just have a squad of eleven and save money. Up front we were woeful Long has lost his passion and I cant help but feel theres no bonding between him and Odewinge. Odewinge does not want to pass the ball to anyone and least of all Long. Morrison Brunt Thomas never in the game. Why why why no Thorne what did we bring him back from Portsmouth for.
All the good work over Christmas lost.

A bad day at the office, no doubt, it happens to every team, even Man Utd, I’m not going to start slating them, especially given our current position, and the fantastic festive season we have had.
True I thought we could have made better use of Dorrans, Cox or Tchyoi, and, with 10 minutes to go I did fear a out of the blue goal, has happened with Stoke.
But, putting it into perspective, its one defeat in four, injuries aside, this team will be more than o.k., as it will turn in half a dozen good displays for every disappointing one.
Keep the faith.

Very disappointed with the result, but more so with the performance. We never looked like creating a goal scoring chance. What was more surprising was that Roy never tried to change things with a sub or 3 especially with another game in 2 days time if not to rest some players at least. Moyes made 3 changes that duly won them the game. Our passing today was awful to say the least and the final ball simply not good enough for the premiership. I hope it’s just a blip as after the spurs game we have a run of games against teams in the bottom half of the table. I’m just worried we are not scoring enough goals. I believe the strikers are good enough it’s creating the goals we need to improve.

Get used to it you younger supporters. I’ve had 60 years of supporting WBA and this what they always do. Promise so much, and then break your heart with a performance like this. What else is there to say?

Thankfully family commitments saved me the journey & time to attend today’s game. I am so glad. Sounded as though it was a cracker (not). TWO home wins this season and SIX defeats tells you all you need to know. We are depressing and so negative and boring at home. This was a good opportunity to put some more poimts on the board and move TEN points clear of the bottom three and we barely have shot in anger. Simple not good enough. Results over the weekend have not been kind but we only ourselves to blame. Don’t get me wrong, the away wins have been good but we must improve at home otherwise we may not be as comfortable as everyone is shouting about. Great start to the new year – thanks lads!

Not a good performance at all I admit.
Dire first half by both teams.
We came out second half and first ten, it looked like we would take a grip of the game.
They get a corner and have a shot and their fans wake up and lift them on.
Odem puts a gift chance over from ten yards, why can’t pros get their head over the ball when they shoot?,teach you that at junior school. If that had gone in I’m sure we would have gone on to win.
They get a chance and take it.
Lots of moans about subs, well I can understand why,or did RH want to save what he could have used for tuesday.
Only Roy knows,we don’t know what happens in the week or what he has planned.
Only point I will make is Thomas needs a rest, too much time on his butt and too much moaning.
Moves breaking down and two players out the game with chins on the floor moaning, Thomas and Brunt(c),not good leadership.
Think it will be diferent at Spurs sure it’s a blip.
Oh thanks SKY again for moving it to such a stupid day/time KO.
The fans really don’t care anymore do they.
Hence no atmosphere.

Right where to start PO not a team player i don’t know how many times recently he has shot when he should passed or crossed but it needs sorting or don’t play him in a 442 formation
Today as we all know it was awful that happens sometimes but the man at the top should know that and change things Moyes did and they won.
Cannot remember the last tme JT ran at someone and skinned them but he should he’s a winger thats his job.
Defencely we were ok it was a new partnership
in the middle and they did alright.
Today RH should have taken off PO and JT and brought on Tchyoi and Dorrans and gone 451 i cannot believe RH thought these players couldn’t change things. If he thinks that why are they on our books.
Our players are better suited to 451 it give’s us natural width and creates more goal scoring chances. We have to start games with a higher tempo and the manager needs to have the ability to adapt to different match

It wasn’t just me that thought we were rubbish then? If what we had on the bench couldn’tmake a difference, why were they on the bench? reason for our poor home record is our poor home crowd. pathetic again today, and don’t bother with the 12.30 kick off excuses. everton kicked on in the closing stages and dominated, not through the tactical genius of their manager but because they had a crowd behind them.

22points from 19 games is a start everyone would have taken. After Cardiff the next 7 or 8 games will define our season. Not to worry, we are not too far away from being a comfortable mid table team. 2 poor performances in Swansea & Everton isn’t a disaster.

One shot on target in the last 3 hours of football at the Hawthornes. I don’t know what Hodson is playing at. It was embarrassing to see the scenes at the end of the 0-0 with Man City with the players celebrating like they had won the cup as opposed to packing the defence in a 9-0-1 formation and hoping for City to haver a bad day. Today’s performance was even worse against a very poor Everton side. If this had happened at Molineux Martin Swain would be stoking up a sack the manager campaign in the E&S. Its about time the Baggies palyed some football instead of the hit and hope stuff that Hodson seems to love, perhaps he’s been watching Stoke too much.

Very disappointed but we’d have taken 2 wins, a draw and a loss over the last 4 games. theres something positive in being disappointed with that return, Still the best Christmas results ever by a mile and I’m sure roy’s passion will demand a performance. Thank God for people like Cyril because they remind me I’m not insane.
I’ve only supported Albion for 34 years so a mere novice by his standards and like him I’ve lived through the Bobby Gould and Ron Saunders eras too. Albion do surprise and break your heart on a regular basis irrespective of the Chair, coach or players – the reasons are many.
Nevertheless after seeing good performances against Blackburn, Newcastle and Man City, it was hugely disappointing to watch Albion lose to a poor side like Everton. Anyone with half a brain knew after 60 minutes that the line up wouldn’t produce a goal and Moyes, to his credit, changes things and as many have said, Hodgson didn’t. Forget Spurs, that’s a red herring – we were at Home against a peer club.
Bad day at the office, perhaps; but at least Fergie sought to save the day and attempt to win whereas Roy was prepared to settle for a draw.
I get sick and tired of the argument that it is wrong to criticise or that saying Hodgson got it wrong means people want him sacked. What stupid logic! As Cyril said, we paid money to watch that performance, made the effort to get there on time, made a commitment. If I had a bad day at the office my line-manager would let me know about it in no uncertain terms; I see no difference.
Football players are human beings, not gods: they make mistakes, screw up or they play well and excite. I’m not an Odemwingie or Brunt “knocker” – I assess what I see on the pitch and comment, isn’t that what supporters have always done?
To not make a tactical change at all yesterday, was a massive mistake by Roy. Everton didn’t want the ball for an hour and only pushed on in the last 15 or so minutes – they were there for the taking!
Listening to his interviews, Roy seemed to think that a 0-0 was “positive”?
I commment every week about PO and Shane, and yesterday just confirmed everything….PO is completely ineefective supporting Shane. He only ever wants to shoot, and never looks for Shanes knock downs….not sure how to sort it, but if QPR want him for £10m, then i’ll drop him off at Loftus Road!
I thought Dawson had a good game yesterday, and he will hopefully be a class premiership player for us over the coming years. Morrsion was the only midfielder who seemed interested and the less said about Sharners header for thier goal, the better.
Normally we do ok at Spurs, so fingers crossed.

As I had to work yesterday and have only seen a recording of the game I didn’t want to comment too much but thank God for tumpa, sherlock and matt along with some other posters earlier.
I frequently have a look at the Wolves pages and have a smile at the delusional posts that lack any understanding beyond the superficial and react with a knee against the manager and whichever players happen to top the current hate list. Thanks to some of our ‘supporters’ I can now stay on here and have a laugh.
27 tumpa.
Great post in which you sum up the modern day supporter’s mentality ‘we won so we’re world beaters let’s erect a statue to everybody or we lost so let’s sack them all and start again.’
29 matt.
Puts it all into a reaistic perspective.
28 sherlock.
I agree with you except that the Jack the Hat post isn’t him as it doesn’t have his trade mark, it’s his Dingle tribute act. As is Stato’s unbelievably tedious brother.
I’ve no problem with posts like 19 Brierley Hill that come out with genuine points of constructive criticism but the one before which is basically just abusive I find a bit pointless as they offer no insight beyond ‘get rid of him, I don’t like him.’ It’s easy to criticise PO if he plays badly when we lose but would we have won those two away games without him? This is the Premier League and Everton have been frustrating teams like that for years. To say that a club of our stature should be able to just turn on the afterburners and dismiss them is living in cloud cuckoo land.

28Sherlock. If I may play Watson to your Holmes. Just how is it the crowd’s fault that players on large incomes cannot do basic things like a pass to a team player, a shot that doesn’t hit row Z, cause the opposing goalkeeper to get grass stains on his bum?
The Everton crowd were quiet too until they scored. The atmosphere was dead because the game died at kick off. ‘Spoilt Brats’ is an insult to honest, hard working supporters. You should be thoroughly ashamed. I have no idea how far you travel, but Steve Poole would have been there under normal circumstances and, no I don’t know him. Now my eyes are bleary I will admit due to old age, but YamYam got it spot on. Simon Tracey you refer to as ‘Dick’, another famous sleuth, in this instance his solution being more accurate than Sherlock Holmes’ one. The real Sherlock was a cold fish who indulged in opium. As for Jacques le Chapeau, he may not have your ability with words, but he’s honest enough and I personally agree with him about the game yesterday. You seem to be the only one who is right and content with that performance. We beg to differ.

That’s another very good point that if you ignore which games they come from we would have been more than happy with those points. We are not Manchester City, along with two of the promoted teams we’re probably in the bottom three of the PL rich table and the fact that we’re nowhere near the bottom three of the actual football table shows how well we’re doing. Goes without saying that yesterday was bitterly disappointing even without the context of 3 fantastic performances prior to this game. To put it bluntly, we didn’t have a bl**din’ clue.
A few observations:
1. Odemwingie – certainly haven’t/aren’t part of the ‘get him out’ brigade but his performance yesterday was beyond belief. Zero effort, technique or awareness of those around him. As bad as I have seen. Ever.
2. Scharner – must have had a cracking night out on NYE because he was immobile and pretty much refused to head the ball all game. No surprise when he glanced one back into the 6 yard box in the 87th minute.
3. Back four, Brunt and Thomas did ok, the last two only in relation to others around him. Thomas ran his socks off but really should begin to wear boots with STUDS in!
4. Tactics – I haven’t seen a team start as poorly as Everton yet we were so negative. We rarely looked for a forward or penetrative pass, preferring to slow the game down and play sideways/backwards. Was this down to tactics or the individuals? Not sure but I haven’t been this bored in quite some time.
5. Roy – Interesting comments from Roy. Clearly we had people on the bench capable of making an impact or at least playing better than those on the field. It’s obvious that he was trying to make a point yesterday about our squad, but not entirely sure the reasons behind this. Part of me hopes it was a message about reinforcing in January. Part of me fears that it was down to his future at the club. However, wrong game to try and make such a point, Roy.
Heading to Spurs tomorrow in fear, mainly down to our current injury crisis. However, I must take this opportunity to say what a wonderful 2011 it has been at the Hawthorns. In spite of some frustrations this season and the hope we will always do better, 2011 exceeded all expectations. Well done to everyone at the club, but let’s now push on and strive for better in 2012.

worst performance of the season. dissapointing after the last few games, good job we have a few points in the bag already and hopefully we can get back to how we can play.

I can’t put a positive spin on yesterday’s game because there’s no disguising a poor performance in a poor match, but I also can’t see the point of jumping off a cliff when we’re positioned mid-table,halfway through the season.
I had a bad feeling about things from kick-off time, because the weather was miserable,we had two ‘very big’ players missing in Olsson and Mulumbu, and apart from the Smethwick End,the crowd were very quiet, with people around me moaning and whinging non-stop from the first 5 minutes, not exactly inspirational stuff for anyone to hear.
Anyway, based on past experience,I said here a few weeks ago that we’ll have a few memorable games this season, and others we’ll want to forget,so yesterday obviously falls into the latter category.
Funny thing is,however bad the game was,had it been US that scored the only goal near the end I’m sure there’d have been a very different attitude and atmosphere amongst fans on the way home.
That’s the difference one goal can make.
C’est la vie.

Absolute RUBBISH! What a boring game with NO intention of trying to score a goal?
Perhaps Roy been texting MICMAC on tactics?
I will praise Jerome Thomas however who I have been critical of, he never stopped running and has started to put his boot in a little bit more. Craig Dawson also looked good and hope he can get a few more games in.
Substitutions on 90 minutes are pointless unless you are winning.

Just got in from a family (large) get-to-gether in The Long Horn. Men all Baggies supporters of long standing. One watched on TV, others all there. We all thought it was rubbish. No prompting, just honest reaction.
Those men on the bench had better ‘make a difference’ from here on in because the squad is diminishing by the day. We may get to see just how good Brunt is by his very absence. On a positive note, Dawson looks ready and Billy Jones is a steal. McAuley took on Jonas’s role of domination in the centre. The prayer mats will be out tomorrow though before we head for The Arthur. I hesitate to offer advice from an amateur to a seasoned pro, but Roy, you may need to call on all 3 subs tomorrow so watch out for whose legs are wobbling.

Sherlock, many thanks for you comments that I would not be welcome at a club I have supported for the last 41 years since I saw my first game at the age of 4. I have held a season ticket for the majority of those and have lived down in Poole for the last 4 years and travel the 370 round trip for home games. Quite clearly that is not good enough for you and clearly we all have to agree with your opinion or keep quite. I stated that our home form is appalling and the facts of two wins in 10 would support that unless you believe that is good home form. We have scored seven goals at home in those ten games. Again, I would suggest that is not good home form. We have done better away from home and I believe that is because the onus is generally on the home team to attack. I am sorry if my views do not agree with your but generally I try be accurate with the facts and fair (try looking at some of my recents posts) & not always look at things with blue & white tinted glasses.

I agree with Cyril and Baggiebob.
It was a very poor performance and a truly awful game. It was decided by a scrappy goal which summed it all up really.
In my opinion we play too negatively at home with a massive gap between the front two and the rest of the team. Away from home we can sit back and hit teams on the break but this obviously does not work at home. A bit more adventure please Roy. Given our inconsistency we could just go and get a result at Spurs. Let’s hope we do.

Will Jonas be playing today? If not, who will be captain? Shorey is very experienced, Morrison covers miles of ground with skill, Scharner would argue with the ref on a bad day, I won’t consider Foster although he is on top form because I cannot ever see a goalie as a captain, so your views please. I think McAuley after his display on Saturday. We shall miss Chris Brunt more than a bit.
It’s time to see whether Tchoyi can show his full potential, Dorrans to become the top player we have seen before, Cox to make the final move up. We shall be sorely tested tonight. Give it a good go lads, that’s all we ask.

Anybody got any ideas why when Roy was Fulham Manager they were rock solid at home but couldn’t win away for love or money while this season we are doing well away and struggling at home.

Mr. Sherlock,
Apology accepted, No damage done. You wouldn’t think some-one with the skill to cut and paste would be so underhand and childish. It takes all sorts mate. The majority of that sort are Dingles, who else would throw stones at a bus full of old women. All the best.

“reason for our poor home record is our poor home crowd. pathetic again today, and don’t bother with the 12.30 kick off excuses”.
” but we won’t progress as a club while we’re ‘supported’ by eighteen thousand-or-so spoilt brats who don’t know they’re born”
Mr.Sherlock57. Read the quotes from YOUR post and then tell me that didn’t include me and the others you named.
I was not aware you used your real name and for the confusion there I apologise without exception. Few of us use our real names and yours could be deemed slightly unusual.
I will reiterate my comment, YOU CANNOT BLAME THE CROWD FOR A RUBBISHY PERFORMANCE. It is the duty of the players to lift the crowd’s spirits not bore them into a stupor. However, I do agree it is wrong to single out players for abuse. That is neither helpful or acceptable.

cyril, i must confess that the 18000 quote was a bit harsh, can now see how that might have riled a few of you, and can only put it down to the frustration of having seen a game lost by a sloppy late winner and a little overindulgence in the christmas spirit
but i will argue until the proverbial dairy animals return to their abode that the crowd CAN and often DOES play a big part in a game. otherwise why would anyone want to go? if you’re looking for strictly visual entertainment then surely watching the game on telly would be an easier and cheaper option
cheers and all the best for the coming year

Players shouldn’t have to rely on a crowd to get them going, but I agree that the latter can certainly play their part.
Concerned about tonight. Not sure what the latest is on injuries but I’m guessing it will be a seriously under strength Baggies outfit. Would have been hard enough with a full team, so all I ask is that those playing show desire. The whole team owes us one for Sunday, so hopefully they can put in a shift.

Sherlock, apologies my posts weren’t as clear as the might have been (I was on the bus using my IPhone so I was a bit rushed!) I was bemoaning some posters who are getting excited at one defeat after an exceptional set of results over the festive period. My point was that you were saying we had played well, did I miss something or was there an element of sarcasm to your post?
I agree with most people on here that our performance was poor and am puzzled at why Hodgson did not make any changes. Olsson is a winner and has the personality to organise things and grab a game by the scruff of the neck when required. I think the responsibility of being captain is too much for Brunt and it’s clear to me his game is suffering as a result.

shropshire, no need for apologies i’m sure. i just like to snap back when cornered sometimes! i would actually agree with you that olsson seems to us mere spectators the obvious choice for captaincy, but the head coach sees it all from a better angle than us so i don’t argue with his judgement
as for the performance, well no it wasn’t our best, to put it politely, but some comments on here would be better suited to a game in which we were so awful as to be dead and buried by half time, such as swansea away
we were always in this game, i thought we were (just about) the better team, and i think if odemwingie’s late effort had hit the net and not the back of the brummie, and we’d gone on to win 1-0, some of the above posters would be celebrating the ‘grinding out’ of ‘an important victory’ and ‘another 3 great points’, instead of spouting on about ‘garbage’, ‘rubbish’, and other such ugly remarks

68KennyH. I hope you are wearing a full set of armour with visor down! I thought your lot were badly done by the ref and you should have been playing against 9 men with Lampard and Cole having an early scrub. Yet on your postboard MicMac should be sacked. I felt truly sorry for the bloke.
We have come to expect better from our team and the disappointment for us was tangible. One day, when your lot play well, you’ll understand.

Sherlock, we’ll call it a draw, 1-1. I don’t bear grudges, too old and too corrosive for my constitution. That’s not to say I won’t have a swing if I disagree and I hope you’ll do likewise. Happy New Year, tarra a bit an’ thank yer fer ‘avin’ we.

I felt sorry for him myself, but i think he has taken us as far as he can, his luck has run out! As for the Armour its standard uniform for me, i live in Cornwall amidst glory hunters!!! As a Black Country boy i hope we both stay up (as long as we are above you lot)but with the sort of raw deal we both get off refs it wont be easy!!
