West Brom’s hopes for 2012
Wednesday 28th December 2011, 11:25AM GMT.
I have completely gorged myself over Christmas, I just couldn’t get enough turkey, treats, beer, wine and chocolate, oh and lets not forget the points! writes West Brom blogger Jarrod Hill.
Two away games against Blackburn and Newcastle followed by a tough home game against Manchester City on paper didn’t look like yielding enough points to cause delirium in some parts of Smethwick. But the seven point haul has had all Baggies fans feeling like this has been the best Christmas ever.
It has been great to be a Baggie in 2011 and I hope 2012 is just as good, if not better. We find ourselves in ninth position in the league and as we head into the January transfer window our excellent first half to the season could have a positive impact on our chances of adding to our squad.
We all know money talks in football, but the more attractive we look, and that includes our league position, the easier it is to recruit.
The rumour mill has churned up a few names, but to be honest I am not expecting a great deal of business to be done. We still have players on the fringes who cannot get games who I believe are very capable at this level, but with injuries starting to mount up there are some key positions that need cover. Both fullback positions could use some cover and possibly another centre halve, but with players like Graham Dorrans, Somen Tchoyi, and Simon Cox all straining at the leash other signings would either be cover for injuries or players for the future.
Obviously if the right player becomes available I am sure the club would do business, but historically January has been a quiet month. Injuries and players leaving will be two important aspects in regards to how much in bound transfer activity we conduct next month, and of course there is always another Dan Ashworth gem waiting to be unearthed!
First up in 2012 is Everton at home. A ridiculously re-arranged fixture at a ridiculous time, 12.30pm on New Year’s Day is as bad as it gets, but lets hope it’s Everton suffering from a hangover. Everton are very much a mid table team, never really going to trouble the top five or six but never really scrapping at the bottom come the end of the season either.
Some Albion fans would say they currently hold what we as a club are striving for, consolidation in the Premier League. Personally I am just happy with the way the club and the team are progressing, and all within our tight financial budget.
After the heroics against Manchester City I am sure the team are in buoyant mood and if we can keep our mini unbeaten run going confidence can only get stronger. A win would be fantastic, but we must not get too carried away and start to believe that we have a divine right to be beating any Premier League team.
Everton have players who I admire greatly. I have always been a fan of Louis Saha, a wonderful player who has seen his career blighted by injuries, but on his day he can be a match winner. Leighton Baines is another player who is coveted by a number of other clubs, and his set piece delivery can be top draw.
But if we can defend as well as we did against Manchester City and attack with the fluidity we had against Newcastle and Blackburn then all three points will be ours.
So proud to be a Baggie!

Another unlucky situation with playing Everton on New years Day is that it is the opening day of the transfer window, which means Landon Donavon can play. Had it been the original date hr wouldn’t have been able to play.

Another good Blog, am not disapointed with the time, can get the game in before heading down to the inlaws,
No 1 Matt, wouldnt worry too much about Donovan, did really well last year for the Toffee’s but hasnt played a competitive game for 5 weeks, so I would think he will be on the bench or will only play 70 mins, be more concerned about Osman and Cahill both under achieved to an extent this year, so they will be looking for a fresh start 2012. Jarrod,
Glad you enjoyed your Christmas, hopefully that goes for everyone else also. Regarding the transfer window, I believe Tim Ream would plumb for us rather than Bolton, given our league position. I am still floating on air. I’ve had a few whiskies to celebrate our great form, but decided to drop the lime ingredient. Twenty-two points with one game to go, for the fixture halfway mark. Dead Chuffed.

Morning Jarrod.
You think it’s bad for you, I can’t go because of work but then I couldn’t have gone on the original date either. My only hope is a couple of feet of snow.
Think you’re spot on about not taking anybody in this league for granted, we only need to think back to Wigan. The crowd were up for it from before the kick off on Monday and it would be great of it was like that every game.
The atmosphere against Wigan was virtually non existant and I wonder if that was not only due to their lack of support but because many of us thought the result was a foregone conclusion. I also wonder if the players suffer from a similar mindset and under estimated Wigan.
On the transfer front, we’re in the enviable position of only needing to recruit if it improves the squad. We have good cover in goal, Dawson and Tamas at CH, Reid and Jones at RB, reasonable resources in midfield and if either of the strikers is out we revert to 451. LB is the only place we don’t have obvious cover so perhaps a raid for the Italian lad?

The big problem with the rearranged home fixture is that the Spurs game was moved to a very stupid time.

Personally, I wont be disappointed if we don’t sign anyone come January, for the first time in a long time the whole squad fills me with confidence that it can do a decent job if called upon on. Of all the players who are first team or on the fringes, I think it would be harsh to single any out as a “real” weak link, they are all capable players.
Its a pity, but if there was a handicap system in place, with points awarded for least money spent, low wage bill etc, and the equating points returned, victories etc, we would be more like top four, if not top, rather than ninth!

I am always proud to support west brom,,,I think the whole team played magnificently against man city ,,,I do wish ko was at 3pm instead because I’m going to a part on new years eve so will be dead although I’m sure I’ll be ok once I’m there (:
I just hope we don’t get to confident or get big headed because every club has it’s losing streak and winning one,,,,but yeahhhh,,

Well done in being top of the bottom half at new year. Blah blah.
But,, dont Billy Jones look a total twonk in that headband of his?
Someone should have a word. A football fashion faux pas second to non.
Sorry, my mistake. Second only to Jonas Olsson.
Only Albion. ( and its Blackburn that call Burnley Dingles)

Dont feel we need any new faces we have able players who cant get a kick now. Wev’e a good record v Everton but Cahill will test our in form
defenders, lets hope we dont concede a penalty
Moyes will be hoping for a change of luck I still
have recording of our 4-0 win Nathan Ellington
scored a couple, where’s he now?

We ‘short-back-and-sides’ merchants don’t need or understand fashion so headbands are for girls in our dated eyes, but the handsome, rugged, brave, highly intelligent chaps mentioned by a well known dog-head on here that cost us hardly a penny piece, have to keep the girls at bay. Their locks are swept back to enable a better choice from the gorgeous talent they attract. I thoroughly understand how this concept is puzzling to a Wulfie who longs to be a Baggie. ‘Baying’ for them is barking at the lamppost they’ve chosen
to despoil.

Oh, ‘mornin’ Jarrod and other happy Baggies.

If we can emulate the performances over the last three games, we can have an excellent cup run. Our squad is now honed into a unit to be proud of. Thanks Roy and Co.

As for Billy Jones, Mick would put your lot out in tutu’s if he thought it would do any good!
p.s. hope you’ve been saving, Monday could well be the day a certain children’s charity becomes 20 quid better off!
p.p.s. f.y.i. where not in the bottom half?

Afternoon all,
good or bad time for a kick off makes no never mind really. If we play well like we did against money bags then we have a great chance of a good result, although everton can be a very dangerous side.
And 11) sad mate, just sad…..we are top half and playing well whilst you lot are….not!
Happy new year all

Lone Wolf seems to be a bit bitter; I wonder why? The 2-0? The fact we haven’t been in the relegation zone? The fact that we kept out one of Europe’s in-form sides? The fact that we are 9th? The fact that we actually look like a PL side (unlike the Dingles)? The fact that, in spite of the hyperbolic guff spouted by E&Dingle the Wolves are doomed to struggle all season long? Or how about all of the above?
Enjoy 2012 – I’m sure your ensuing relegation battle will be absolutely thrilling. Me? I’ll settle for 9th.

24 Max,
thanks,I’ve just bought Roger Johnson’s headband off him.
He wore it against the Baggies, but it kept fallin’ over his eyes,so he could never see where Shane Long had gone to.
Well that was his excuse.

Well,I know you like being punished, after all,you are a wolves fan so you must be used to suffering by now.
Talking of which, you say you get nervous seeing a 70 year old man with a full head of hair?-
which must explain why the wolves fans look so worried whenever Jody Craddock’s playing….
anyway,happy new year,and tight lines.

26Lone. As it happens, I love dogs, glorious creatures. I like cats too, but especially foxes. I tamed 3 in a row to feed from my hand and they are just like cats, not dogs at all. Our Bassett hound at the time loved the first fox too. Great pals. Pictures to prove if anyone challenges.
