Blackburn 1 West Brom 2

Peter Odemwingie’s late stunner claimed a vital win for West Brom as the Baggies downed sorry Blackburn.

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Blackburn Rovers v West Bromwich Albion - Ewood Park

Peter Odemwingie’s late stunner claimed a vital win for West Brom as the Baggies downed sorry Blackburn.

The striker’s 89th minute curler won it for the visitors to push them six points clear of the Premier League drop zone and up to 13th.

James Morrison’s brilliant volley fired West Brom into a second-half lead, before former Walsall defender Scott Dann equalised with 18 minutes remaining.

And the Baggies survived a late Rovers rally to heap pressure on Blackburn boss Steve Kean.

Paul Scharner replaced Jerome Thomas in the only change from the 2-1 defeat to Wigan, while Steven Reid shook of a knee injury to start at his former club.

West Brom opened well with Odemwingie shooting over, after fine work by Morrison.

The patient Baggies were content to keep possession, frustrating the cagey hosts who were short on confidence and ideas.

But, to their credit, Rovers were at least robust in the early exchanges as West Brom tried to pick their way through.

Shane Long flashed a header across goal after 15 minutes, as the Baggies made the running and goalkeeper Paul Robinson spilled Odemwingie’s low skidder five minutes later.

Slowly though, Rovers began to spark following their subdued start with Yakubu unsettling the Baggies back-line.

But it was Mauro Formica who gave Albion the biggest scare on 27 minutes when he muscled his way to go clean through – only to be denied by Scharner’s super tackle.

The Baggies remained unflustered though, until Scharner was booked for a foul on Formica and goalkeeper Ben Foster tipped Morten Gamst Pedersen’s free kick over after 37 minutes.

West Brom’s early territorial domination waned and Rovers began to find gaps but the door was firmly shut by the visitors.

Reid’s fine tackle halted David Dunn – who needed treatment – before Yakubu blazed over as both teams lacked conviction.

Scharner’s scuffed effort on 50 minutes after neat work from Youssouf Mulumbu and Morrison epitomised the Baggies’ finishing – until his stunner broke the deadlock.

Chris Brunt’s 52nd minute corner was only half cleared to the Scotland international, who unleashed a stunning volley from 20-yards which fizzed into the corner.

It breathed fresh life into the Baggies who relaxed and they began to impose themselves on the rattled Rovers.

Ex-Blues defender Dann almost lobbed Robinson from 50-yards under pressure from Shane Long, as the visitors began to dominate.

But they were made to pay for lax defending 18 minutes from time, when Christopher Samba nodded down Robinson’s long clearance for Dann to bundle in from four yards.

It was harsh on West Brom but they remained the better side and Long almost stabbed in after Samba’s mis-cued header.

A Morrison strike fizzed over as the visitors pressed and they got their rewards with another super strike from Odemwingie in the last minute.

There was little on for the hitman as he cut in from the right but Rovers sat off and he unleashed a wonderful curling effort from 18-yards to win it.

Fantastic win today, didn't expect 3 point's at Blackburn.

Great to see Wingie on the scoresheet again, long may it continue.

cant wait to see goal's on MOTD supposed to be cracker's.

Boing! Boing!

Only watched on the nett but got the jist of a great second half performance, that's the performance we've been waiting for from our midfield,OK the goals were tap in's but they all count.

Have to mention the support, they never stopped singing and must have inspired the team and come out second half and play like that.

Just imagine if all the home fans could support the team like that, they might even enjoy playing at home instead of thinking "what are they going to be like today?"

Does anybody want Roy sacked this week?

Bet Sir Terry wasn't bored this week.

Sam Long

Well done lads, a point at newcastle will satisfy me over christmas though!

told you all about odemwingie and to get off his back andget behind him but biased e&s won,t let my comments stay on the page because i,m not a wolves fan. great effort today lads .boing boing.!!!!!

Cyril Randle

A very needed victory filled with some super football and some tripe. When we moved it quickly, it was fluid and good to watch. When we paused, it went back, sideways and to the opposition. The two goals were Match Of The Day stuff, both should be included in the Goal of the Month competition. On another day, the Blackburn goal might have got an offside decision, but they deserved one for effort. P.O. should feel better after a brilliant match winner. The defence did well although McAuley had the roof fall in on him when Yakubu smashed a forearm into his face early on. At least a yellow, but nowt given.

Scharner had a good game but two of his tackles were plain barmy and he might have walked on another day.

very important indeed and with other results going our way will make my Xmas a lot easier. Must say a point at Newcastle is a realistic target as they're on the slide. Was working today so looking forward to MOTD. Great to see Pete scoring again plus what sounds to be a good battling performance against a bruiser of a side. Albiön til I die!

Superb goals from Mozza and Po, I'd also heap praise on Riedy today who defended like his life depended on it. Mcauley did a good job keeping the Yak at bay also.

wordsley baggie

great result to make up for last week. and pete on the score sheet too, much needed confidence booster. good all round display.

Well played today. Not pretty at times but a bit of character shown after conceding an awful goal for their equaliser. Still work to do but its points that count and both our goals were worthy of winning any game.

Great win today and a big boost for the club and fans. Being married to a life long Albion fan you can't help but want the best for them. Looking forward to meeting Kev on Wednesday but guess we'll have one eye on the scores while we boogie!

Forget MOTD its game of the day on sky

paul villa

Great result and I'm reminded that I had a WBA shirt as a kid , almost 60 years ago .

Hope the team keep it up .

J♣ck the Hat.

Two cracking eighteen yarders, as long as we can blister the framework like that we will always win matches. So in future have a pot as soon as the target is in sight. Morrison top dog again with Osaze warming to the task. Shorey got through plenty of work, Ben was safe again. It could have been five but who's complaining. Bosting three points away from home, thanks Roy. Next win takes us past the magical twenty points mark. Come on you BAGGIES.

P.S. Praise be, Doyler has scored a goal.

I went to the game and we definitely deserved the 3 points.

Scharner and Mulumbu give us the platform to play. I thought Odemwingie was absolutely tripe but he scored a great goal and hopefully that will do him good. Brunty was poor again and maybe he needs a rest. Dorrans came on and plays the pass early at the moment Brunt is dwelling on the ball and getting caught in possession. Still a great 3 points and things are looking up again.

The King of Bilstonia

Went to the game today and some "enterprising" Blackburnite was sellling old gold and black scarves which the locals were snapping up

Great win today and a very good performance. Those who criticise can say what they like but I'm proud of my albion today. Macca, kev spot on as usual and I think jack said in the week brunty needs to play out wide. How true, his delivery was fantastic today. Welcome back peter, keep singing his name and he will keep scoring goals. Boing boing

Saw the game live over here, observations:

1) The win was absolutely critical and until Pete scored his screamer at the end, I thought we were only going to come away with a point after dominating possession and creating much better chances than Blackburn.

2) Before he scored that winner, Pete had a disappointing game. Some of his decision making was awful at times and even Brunt started screaming at him after one particularly poor effort. Having said all of that, hopefully the goal will give him the confidence and lift he needed.

3) I'm still not convinced Pete and Shane can play together.

4) I thought the midfield did well today. Mulumbu and Sharner worked hard, Jimmy was my MoM again and scored an absolute peach. Brunty worked hard and because we used him in a wide role, got a few quality crosses into their penalty area.

5) Thought Shorey had a decent game today and I've been critical of him this season. He got forward well and put some great crosses in. I think it helped having Morrisson in front of him and not Thomas.

6) Also thought McCauley and Foster both did well today.

A point at Newcastle would be nice.

burnley baggie

didn't expect this victory but chuffed all he same as i work with many rovers fans so Monday will be a good day

I was told how bad Rovers were but now i have

seen it for myself i think they will go down

We were excellent today thought reid was outstanding and long some of his touches and

hold up play were excellent. Always been a fan of Morrisons his goal today was fantastic as was PO's. I blame Foster for goal im sure many will disagree but watch carefully he took a step forward and then went back something as a keeper you never do.

To top it all game of the day on SKY second on MOTD someone must be listening and the shortest journey home of the season

SC Baggie

Great Game.... Great result...Morrison back to his very best and did you notice 'Roy's new hair do.....neat

J♣ck the Hat.

If Rooney could score a goal like Morrisons (1,000th Premier League) goal, it would be on every T.V. channel and in every news paper for twelve months. Well done lad,. I will always remember that one.

Sort It Roy

As I said last week, accolades when earned, and you earned them at Blackburn. good all round performance. I honestly expected us to win, after the debacle against Wigan. Now take that confidence into the next game. I can take losing, as long as we've battled and had a go.

Keep it going now.

I'll be the nutta down the front, bring me a pint of iced water if you get chance?

J♣ck the Hat.

Sounds as though the Blackburn fans are as deluded as the fans who wear the Yella un black daern the road, doe it?.

CantelloRocket 78

One thing I'd like to know-

does Roy read these pages?

On the 'Chris Brunt' thread, some of us were saying he should be put back on the left wing, because that's where he used to be most effective, and going back over there would surely improve his form.

The following day,RH moves him there, and waddya know, several excellent crosses came over from Brunty early in the game that should have produced a goal or two.

Anyway, well done Roy for having the sense to listen to us(yeah, right),and for sticking with an attacking system against Blackburn that worked well for long periods.

The bottom line was an away victory, achieved by us scoring two world-class goals.

3 points,up the table,Xmas comes early.....

CantelloRocket 78

11 Ty23-

I can usually spot a 'disguised' wolves fan,but this is a new one on me.

Reading between the lines,if I didn't know better,I'd swear you were my wife......

Hang on...........

what are YOU doing on here?????

quinton baggie

Fantastic 3 points after the disapointing result at home to Wigan. Apparently Mozza scored the 20,000th Premier league goal.

Boing Boing

J♣ck the Hat.

Over on the dark side the referee of their match has come in for some stick from the local Knuckle draggers. 1/ Hunts penalty should have been retaken as five players were encroaching in the box before Hunt struck the ball. 2/ The foul that led to Stokes winner, scored by Doyle, was a good call. Take the ball or not Johnson knows he shouldn't tackle from behind. Glad to help the Dingles with their quandaries.

Terrific performance, the boys were completely dominant, 2 stunning strikes should be good contenders for goal of the month, especially Morrison's. Great reaction to last time out against Wigan. Peter Odemwingie reminded us of the quality he has, as with Brunt, now we need those 2 to perform to that level on a consistent basis.

There's been a lot of idiots posting all week, which is why I haven't posted for a bit. I noticed they've been a bit shy since around 5pm yesterday, I wonder why.

Boing Boing!!

To all fans who booed last week and are just there to criticize at every opportunity.

Paul Scharner's words after Saturday are as follows

The fans were very, very important to us on Saturday and I have to say thank you for their incredible support.

Hands up if this could ever be said about yourself? Home or away.

Wouldn't it be great if somebody said that every week?

Gabbys Elbow

Great win, and im happy to humble pie over claiming PO and Long are not suited and can't play together.

Just wondered what the formation was yesterday?

Would be wonderful to get something at Newcastle in the week as well?

What a fantastic win for you, goal of the month by either Morrison or PO maybe even contender for goal of the season but then again you ain't man utd or city. Well as for our shower well woodgate should have been sent off, pullis knew that and took him off gutted at the result but I would just like to wish you all a merry Christmas, I'm off to New York for a well deserved family holiday /\_/\

Much better all round performance.

I can't understand how anyone could hold Foster responsible for Dann's goal; he's not Mystic Meg, you muppet! His positioning was correct; he would've been criticised if he had advanced and Samba had glanced it into an empty net.

Well, Dingles been begging Doyle to score goals ....

The hoff

Let's hope the goal gives pete some confidence because he was awful prior to the goal. Delighted with the win which was fully deserved on the balance of play but still very worried by the long-odemwingie partnership which clearly isn't working for either of them.

Wall Heath Baggie

Perhaps just perhaps the reaction of the crowd against Wigan led to the improved performance at Blackburn.

Man of the match for me was Jim Morrison, who appears to have broken through to the other side.

Agree with your thoughts mate.

I presume people are idiots because they do not agree with your blinkered views, keep posting son because one more idiot will not make any difference.

J♣ck the Hat.

Wall Heath,

Cheer up mate it is X-mass you know. Good will to all men. Take a leaf out of my book, see how I praised Doyles goal.

Massive win. Sounds like we played well and deserved the 3 points. Only the second game this season that I haven't been able to watch live or on TV so I can't personally comment on the performance. Midfield and defence have been coming in for a lot of compliments, though worrying that people still don't feel that the Long/Odemwingie partnership showed signs of working.

1-3 points on Weds night (and should our key players be fit then I feel a draw is certainly achievable) and we are probably about where we should be.

My wish for Christmas is that we sort out our home form. The crowd need to play a part in that too. I get the feeling that the weight of expectation is dragging us down slightly.

Having watched the Wolves 'highlights' on MOTD ( penalty and a tackle by Zubar that went near the goal) I'm left wondering whether I view our games through blue and white tinted specs. Roger Johnson caught the man way before he followed through onto the ball. A clear foul and probably a yellow card. Mad Mick is clutching at straws as per. I'm frightened that a draw or loss on Tuesday and he will be gone.

Wall Heath Baggie

Fear not mate, if Mad Mick does get the bullet who in their right mind is going to want to Manage that shower ???.

I take your point mate and i will try to be civil over the Xmas period , liked your Doyle swipe at the Wulfies by the way .

Quick question: Was Odemwingies reaction to the goal (head pointing, fingers to lips etc) aimed at Blackburn fans, Albion fans or nobody in particular?

The Real Bully Hoo.

41 Max.

Good idea let's boo them at the end of every game and we should win the league, oh hang on Wolves have already disproved your theory. Anyway people are strange so you never know but booing never did light my fire even at the end of the game.

The Real Bully Hoo.

29 Jack.

I don't know if you saw this one.

December 17, 2011 at 9:26 pm

11. the attendance today was 24,624,000?, multiply that by £40 a ticket our gate revenue bought in £984,960,000. Maybe Mick could sign the Barcelona 1st team?

Over 24 million Wolves fans for a league game? Then I realised it was how many had been at the Chorley game. As for the gate receipts, Mick should be able to steal the new Roger Johnson for that much.

We only need one half!

After the Wigan game I posted this,

"Overall, were we poor today? yes, can it improve? certainly, but most importantly, does this team have the potential to get its act together and turn the corner with these players? most defiantly.

Move on and upwards."

CantelloRocket 78

46 Bully,

when you get your coat, don't forget to shut The Doors as you leave......

J♣ck the Hat.

Sorry mate, I thought 24,624,000 was the amount of bricks for their new "White Elephant".

CantelloRocket 78

38 wolves1877,

at least we have quite a lot in common, for example there seems to be a mutual dislike of all things 'stoke city',plus we're both based in that area of the country that the national media have trouble finding, even though it's situated centrally between Manchester and London.

Oh,and we both seem to get rubbish Referees-

although the chances of finding a good one are about the same as the REAL santa sliding down the chimney next week.

A happy Christmas to you,too.

CantelloRocket 78

47 Bully,

this 'johnnyrichards' is such an idiot!!

How ridiculous for him to say the total wolves gate revenue against Stoke was nearly £985mil.!

Didn't he notice it was a 'kids-for-a-quid' game?

The takings were actually a more realistic figure of just over £875mil.

Tut,tut, some people really do get carried away..............

CantelloRocket 78

As it's nearly Xmas, maybe we can have a bit of fun with a 'caption competition' for the above photo.

For starters,how about-

Nicky Shorey is saying to Shane Long-

'So you like this life-size model of Pete I got from the club shop?

It's really clever,it even points to where you supposed to put the batteries in it.....'

J♣ck the Hat.

All Premiership games this week involving Midland clubs kick off at 19:45Hrs. The rest 20:00Hrs. Why?.

Sold Morrison short with his astounding goal, it was at least twenty yards.

He (Osaze) also touched his temple indicating he was over his setbacks as I read it.

I can now see how he and Long can hit it off. Osaze works the right flank when Long moves into strike position. Long plays from just behind, when Osaze plays off the shoulder of the last defender. Both get into strike positions when Brunt has the ball wide left. Get ready for some real fire works although it's X-mas.

Wall Heath, what's all that about????

Just because my opinion differs from yours does not make me an idiot. If you bothered to read my post properly instead of jumping to conclusions you will see that I was referring to those that post, whilst pretending to be somebody else.

Cheer up mate, it might never happen!!

Boing Boing!!

Wall Heath Baggie

Misunderstood your post , i apologise.

The Real Bully Hoo.

53 Rocket.

PO could be saying 'see it's not all in our minds, if we dress as Liverpool we don't get dodgy decisions against us.'

J♣ck the Hat.

Shropshire, Wall Heath,

No one misconstrues posts more than I do if it isn't black and white. It does happen when we get older, I,m sure there's no real damage done.

J♣ck the Hat.

I think Osaze is saying "I can't understand it, the referee is allowing my goal to stand".

Wall Heath, apology accepted. Let's not argue amongst ourselves, that what them lot down the road do!

Boing Boing!!

Jack - Very plausible. Was quite an aggressive reaction for such a laid back fella. He went through a similar baron spell last year and then scored against Blackpool. His reaction was one of joy, so I was just wondering whether Saturday had a more sinister angle to it.

CantelloRocket 78

Photo caption-

Pete saying-

'nobody believed me when I said I'm still not 100 per cent fit and healthy.

Just look at this-have you ever seen a worse case of dandruff??'.

Maybe that was the missing ingredient mate, "Aggression".
