West Brom boss Roy Hodgson issues ‘hands off’ Graham Dorrans warning

West Brom boss Roy Hodgson has told Graham Dorrans he still has a big future at the Hawthorns after dismissing speculation he could be on his way.

The 24-year-old Scot, who has suffered a frustrating 18-month spell,  has been linked with a move to his boyhood club Glasgow Rangers, in a potential swap deal involving Ibrox striker Nikica Jelavic.

But the rumours were rubbished by the Baggies head coach, who insisted the talented midfielder was going nowhere.

Dorrans’ exciting career was brought to a standstill last season by personal problems and injuries, but Hodgson has made it clear that he still has huge faith in the Scot’s ability to be a success in the top flight.

He said: “Graham has missed a lot of football since he helped West Brom come up and that has been unfortunate for him.

“But I believe in him very much. I think he has an important part to play. The speculation with Rangers is precisely that – speculation.

“We have had no contact with any other club and we’ve got no interest in any.”

West Brom are working on a deal to recruit “the next Dorrans” having now confirmed that they have agreed a fee with Dundee United for the January transfer of another Scottish midfield prospect, Scott Allan.

But the Baggies are mindful of the rival attentions of both Rangers and Celtic, which has left Allan weighing up the attraction of immediate Scottish Premier League football.

I would want to hold on to him, just hope the injury problems are a thing of the past.

I said last week we were doomed after Merson had us down for a win against Wigan…well this week he’s got us down for a loss so we should be okay!

To be judged whether he’s a premier league player he needs a run of games. Roy Hodgson is not allowing him a run so how do us the fans know if he’s comfortable at this level? Dorrans is 24 not 18, his career is just drifting by.

The same applies to George Thorne if he’s good enough he’ll shine if given the opportunity.

Quality player; he showed us that in the Championship. Needs to stay injury free and prove he can cut it in the Prem. Dorrans at his best would be an asset to any club.

If we’d won last week people would be saying Odemwingie’s return was the catalyst.

Similarly if we’d won and played 4-5-1 again, it would have been due to Dozza’s return.

Instead, these threads get littered by the “this country’s going down the pan I tell ya” brigade (post 3) who continue proclaiming that “we’ve seen the best of Dozza” and “Odemwingie’s not bothered now he’s got his contract”.

    What a load of carp.

Both quality players, both (to anyone who bothers going every week) clearly still bothered, or at least as bothered as last season when everything was going swimmingly.

Odemwingie was trying to rev the supporters up at the weekend, are those the actions of a player who desperately wants out????

Regarding 3. Anyone who lives in Ockerbonk would know there are TWO ‘l’s in Ockerhill.
    Except maybe a Wulfie wouldn’t.

The board was closed on a topic and Matt made a good comment. My reply was:
6.Matt. Nice post mate.I think we should allow for people’s worries too though. Football isn’t the simple game it once was. We had a few thugs back then but very few CHEATS. The British psyche would not stand for cheating. “Play up, play up and play the game” even amongst the working classes was the order of the day. So many men did Forces and National Service and the habit was not to question orders, so the refs had a quiet time too. That’s why my blood boils when I see diving, feigning injury, trying to get opponents sent off, biased refs, etc.

Somwhere, recently, I’ve seen the adjective “sturdy” ascribed to some players, by a manager who wants his younger players protected. If you leave out the “s” you can make a sort of anagram of sturdy. In my opinion the sturdiest player we ever had was Ray Wilson. I admired his style and he did cause some wingers to simulate diving, or at least hurtle through the the air. Dougie Fraser, on the other hand, was not sturdy, just very hard and fair – possibly my favourite player of all time, with the possible exception of Willie Johnston, who didn’t dive but certainly flew. (endorsed by William Shankly)

Got to get this off my chest. Having supported the Baggies for some time I’ve come to terms with their unfailing ability to put to an end an opponent’s disastrous run. e.g Wigan’s Moses inability to get a goal. So much so I made up a song (some years ago actually) and it goes to the tune of Ghostbusters.
    Vs.1
If you aint won a game
    in a long long time
Who’d you wanna play – West Bromwich
    Vs2
If you aint scored a goal
    in a long long time
Who’d you wanna play – West Bromwich

However, this gift can work two ways. I don’t think we’ve beaten Blackburn for a while, and we’ve certainly being changing those kind of records for th last season and a half so here’s hoping.

Just tried to comment on the Scott Allen page but it won’t allow me so thought I’d repost here:

I’ve had doubts about many things this year, but our continued ability to spot young talent on the cheap isn’t one of them. I’ve had a Dingle mate laughing down the telephone this morning. Believe me, we’ll have the last laugh…

Lordsmyshep – Yes, very nervous about tomorrow. Looking at our next 3 games, we may well end up in the relegation zone at some point. But I’m also confident that, so long as we get our squad playing to its potential, we will get out of it.

Ps Did anyone else see the BBC match preview? I quote: “the inform Chris Brunt makes his 250th appearance.” People get paid to deliver this rubbish?

    10 Bromham.
Would love to have seen our Cristiano playing back then against those two. He’d have started on the right wing and been put over the advertising boards then moved to the left and put into row Z and then gone crying to the referee and Jack Taylor would have said grow up and grow a pair son.
    Happy days.
