Shane Long pleads for patience with Peter Odemwingie partnership
Tuesday 13th December 2011, 11:05AM GMT.
West Brom striker Shane Long is pleading with fans to give his partnership with Peter Odemwingie time to prove it can be a Premier League success.
The favourites of last season and this new one have yet to truly hit it off as the goal-menacing spearhead head coach Roy Hodgson believes them to be.
Their pitch-time together has been disrupted by injuries and Odemwingie’s struggle for form following last season’s 15-goal calling card to English football is being viewed as further evidence of the pair’s incompatibility.
But Long, an undoubted hit since his recruitment from Reading, believes he and Odemwingie have not run into any hurdle a little patience won’t help them overcome.
The Republic of Ireland international said: “We haven’t played too many games together yet. It takes a while to get it going.
“Peter is obviously a very good striker and he knows what he’s doing. I think I learn a lot off him. I think it will blossom in time, but there are more options there for the manager if not.
“It’s not been too good up to now but we just need time to understand each other’s runs and I think it will blossom in due course.
“ I obviously watched him on TV scoring a goal every second week last season. He’s able to cut it at this level.
“I set myself the standards to get to his level and show that I can cut it too. He’s been unlucky with injury and so I have I.
“But, hopefully, over the next few weeks we’ll get a good partnership going together.”
The combination of the Ireland star and the Nigeria international brings together two players from very different football worlds but Long believes they are bonding as new team-mates.
He added: “He’s a good lad, a really nice fella. Once we leave training we go back to our own life but, when we are in training, we talk all day long.”

I sometimes think people want this partnership to fail just so they can say “I told you so” or to prove how much they “know” about football – or even to say that Peter just took the money and now isn’t bothered…. so it’s great to see Shane bringing a little reality into the picture.
You don’t “fluke” 15 goals at this level so PO is obviously a class player – but whether its due to injury or lack of confidence he has not played well recently – but will he get better sittiong on the bench ??
Shane has shown already that he is good enough at this level and the prospect of them both playing to their potential together is too good to just throw away.
I think we have to give them 5 full games to get things going and THEN make a change if needed, but they are 2 class players who can both score so I hope they get the chance.

I say if that’s what Shane and Odem want to try, give them a chance, they should know better than anyone if they think they can pull it off or not.

I don’t wanna take sides, but a lot has been said about Peter O.,and much of it could just be rumour and personal opinion, without knowing all the true facts.
We saw last season that he seems to struggle with his mental state,if things are going well he can find himself on a ‘high’,even being cocky and a touch arrogant, but if things aren’t going well,he loses all confidence, and had to have sessions with the shrink last season to rebuild his belief.
You can be a victim of your own success, and after spending much of his career as more of a wide midfielder, and not having a high goal scoring record, his goals for us last season labelled him as our main striker, and there was much expectation, and pressure, for him to repeat it this time around.
As I said the other day,we need to have players throughout the team contributing more goals than they currently are,and I’m sure Peter can settle down as an important ‘team player’,because we need as many quality players around the pitch as we can get,and he’s already shown us that he has natural skills.
Shane Long has asked us to be patient, and give it more time for things to develop,so I’m happy to go along with what he’s saying.

Spot on mate. I heard people grumbling about his contract before the season even started, generally blind cynicists, but let’s not forget he didn’t demand a contract, he didn’t demand to leave, Albion offered him a contract. Who in their right mind wouldn’t accept a pay rise off their boss???
Unfortunately now it seems his contract’s bringing a lot of negativity. The armchair experts are telling us he can’t be bothered anymore. I saw more effort from him Saturday than I did at times last season, he just didn’t play very well- that’s not intentional.
This is where good supporters get behind a player, give him confidence and allow him to get back to his best. I’m just not sure he’ll get that chance from some at the minute.

Odemwingie was always going to find this season harder as he’s now a marked man. Just hope that the injuries lay off so they can both get a chance to play together.
my issue is that they are both so attack-minded. Traditionally, you have a playmaker sitting behind the striker, whereas these two effectively both play as a lone striker so it’s not really worked so far, but only time will tell…

Of course this strike force needs to progress and this comes with water under the bridge. Unfortunately we have Dingles on here who would love to see them fail along with some of our own fans who are without patience. Listen, we had patience with Morrison and look how he has reacted. Of course the Dingles on here would love to see Roy go, but why do some of our fans take their bate?. Believe me, they (Dingles) would give their eye teeth for what we have. Just like Wigan, Blackburn wont be a pushover, but neither will we.

Play Peter O on the left side, just ahead of midfield. He has blistering pace and a strong left foot. Keep Shane ahead of the pack as the lone striker. But a tough decision would have to be made, to drop Jerome Thomas. The three looked so ‘cluttered’ in the first half on Saturday and Thomas was constantly leaving the left wing. We really missed Dorrans or Scharner in a midfield role, which would be more damaging to the opposition. As Big Dave says, we have the players to secure a midtable position. We don’t seem to be able to get the system and balance right at the moment.

Still not sure they can play together? PO’s best role is on the shoulder of the last man, running the channels, so unless someone is going to coach him pdq on how to play the support striker, he’ll be ineffective for us. How about offlodding him for c£5m in january??
Can’t rmemeber the last itme we beat Blackburn either?
Last time i went there, was so long ago, Simon Garner and Martin Bennett got sent off for fighting and i think we lost 2 nil?

i think peter o is trying to hard to make things happen when he’s got the ball and trying to please the fans rather than let it flow natrually like last season. the fans need to get off his back and encourage him. like we use to sing “we’ve done it before and we’ll do it again” he’ll do the same.no true baggies fan will won’t him sold in january when we got him for bargin last season. back the team!!!!!! boing boing!!!!!

Warren – I have to say I wholeheartedly agree with you. I’m not exactly sure what PO’s done off the field to annoy the fans (happy to be enlightened) and he showed a decent amount of effort on Saturday. The problem is, he was trying to do it all himself on the ball and hasn’t a clue defensively. He’s fairly brittle and clearly a man who needs to be full of confidence to play well. We need to be patient with him.
That being said, I still wouldn’t have played him on Saturday and I feel 4-5-1 suits the team. I would have been very happy to have him coming off the bench as he did at QPR. I’d be very surprised if we didn’t go back to 4-5-1 on Saturday; clearly our only decent performances this season have come from playing that, particularly away from home.

I’m not sure either what he has done to get so much stick. He was fantastic last season, got crucial goals vs norwich and wolves this season. Yes his partnership needs work with shane long but having such low confifence won’t help. He had a rough time with his club in russia, was blasted by his international manager and fans and is now taking some stick from a small minority of our fans. Just keep behind him, he plays so much better when he is smiling and its our job as albion fans to get behind him and the rest of our players, regardless of whether we agree with team selections or formations. We are all albion, let’s get boinging again

I can tell you what he’s done wrong. He’s next on the lynch list now that Mozza’s found a bit of form.
I basically agree with CR78.
The racist abuse PO got in Russia was totally unacceptable and I can’t imagine it hasn’t left its mark. He’s had a stop-start season, but it is clear from his movement and body language, things aren’t right with him.
We can all speculate over the causes and I don’t wish to be callous, but the team needs players who can deliver and currently only Shane has hit the net on a regular basis. The “partnership” might require time but if that’s the case the midfield need to be getting on the scoresheet more than they are.

So by ‘finding employment’,do you mean the job of keeping Angeline happy?

21 Kev,
me wife’s now been told she can work from home next week,it looks pretty definite,so we should be able to pick your mate up.
We’ll probably aim to get to The Robin for around 8.00,the gig’s there usually start at 9.00,so I only have to look at you for an hour before they turn the lights off, which is more than enough for anybody.
We can come off the Burnt Tree Island at about 7.45,so if your mate can get over that way,we’ll meet him somewhere in the area,I think there’s a Tesco,a retail park(?),or maybe a pub where you can park for a few minutes.Wherever is the best place for him to wait at.

Why can’t people just swap contact details so the rest of us don’t have to read this personal, inane chat?

26 mboy,
you may notice at the beginning of these particular posts that they’re being directed to ONE person, and that person may not always be easy to contact in other ways.
You say why do you HAVE to read them-
well,DO you have to read them?
I doubt if anyone’s forcing you to,are they?
If they’re of no interest to you, then why not just ignore them, and move on to something else instead of complaining?

28 mboy-
the articles on here are obviously based around football, and those of us at the centre of your complaint have already made posts relating to this particular story, but some of us know each other personally,so we chat about others things while we’re ‘linking-up’ on these pages.
You may have noticed that Albion players have been visiting kids in hospital recently, that the club take an interest in various local community projects, and that Albion have a reputation of being a ‘family’ club.
The reason it that it’s also a sociable thing, with football fans making contacts and forming friendships,so sometimes we chat about other interests, and try to have a laugh or two thrown in along the way.
We’ve had others read what we say here, and then comment that they enjoy the banter, one regular on here said a while ago that reading our posts is better than watching his TV.
Like I say, you’re not forced to read every post if you don’t want to,especially when it’s clearly aimed towards one person,so if you don’t like what you see just ignore it,life’s too short to grumble about such minor things.
