Steven Reid takes the blame for West Brom loss despite goal against Wigan
Monday 12th December 2011, 11:00AM GMT.
West Brom goal-hero Steven Reid today took the blame for the Hawthorns defeat to Wigan.
The experienced full-back scored a spectacular first goal of the season to put the Baggies 1-0 up with a stunning free-kick.
But the former Republic of Ireland international conceded the second-half penalty with a foul on Victor Moses with Jordi Gomez netting the Latics’ winner from the spot.
The 30-year-old said: “I’m disappointed overall. I would have rather not scored and got a result.
“I blame myself for the defeat. I should have stayed on my feet and unfortunately we couldn’t get anything out of the game.
“We have conceded a few penalties this season and you never like giving away cheap goals like that.
“We played pretty well on Saturday, second half especially, and I hold myself responsible for their winning goal.”
Reid returns to former club Blackburn for the first time on Saturday with West Brom looking for a pre-Christmas boost after ending the weekend just three places and three points above the relegation zone.
But the defender is expecting the battle for Premier League survival to remain tight for the rest of the season.
He said: “We got back-to-back wins against Villa and Wolves that kicked us right up there and we need to get another couple of those together. If you do that you can find yourself in the top eight.
“It looks like the top six or seven are pulling away a little bit, then you can pick any three from the rest to go down.
“We’re fighting for mid-table and below and I’m sure we will put a run of games together where we get a run of results.
“Hopefully, it will come sooner rather than later.”
Reid also revealed how a chance effort in the warm-up prompted him to try his luck in the game ahead of regular free-kick-taker Chris Brunt.
He said: “I hit one in the warm-up which went in a similar position so I fancied that one and, luckily enough, it went in.”

if we sign the cretin mentioned in the transfer rumours i will never place myself in the same football ground as him, and i know for a fact i won’t be the only one
reidy, don’t blame yourself mate, you were all as bad as eachother

i know it was a poor tackle by reid, but overall i thought he was 1 of our best players saturday.if chris brunt gets any lazier he will need to bring a deck chair on the pitch.
i am a fan of hodgson.still.but his comments saying we could not play any better than we did are a big concern.was he serious?we managed just 3 attempts on target against a very poor side.
sherlock.i don’t like the idea of diouf either.problem being, hodgson and ashworth are only allowed to get in loans or freebies.and theres not much out there in january who could genuinley improve us.JP must be keeping the spare cash for buying up shares.

Steve,
It is a team game so it is stand or fall together. Why did the referee see a difference in Dorrans appeal and your incident?. Harry Redknapp is now having a go at them now as the referee missed two clear hand balls from Stoke. What do they look at, we need more than goal line technology, who cares if the match is half an hour longer as long as it brings fairness back to football. Did we not have enough clear cut chances to win the match?. As I keep saying, there are no easy matches in the Premiership, every sinew has to be strained over the ninety minutes. I believe Tchoyi could do the same job for us as Crouch does for Stoke.

No blame there – a careless moment. Reid is a decent player, a midfielder out of position, who never hides. I was more concerned about the 4-4-1-1 formation – we never looked at ease from the first moment to the last. The only system I’ve seen which seems to work for us is 4-5-1, with Shane Long up on his own. When Odemwingie came on for Thomas at QPR down the left, we also looked fast, direct and dangerous on every attack. It doesn’t look, to me, as if the management team yet know our best system or players to use within it.

Fair play to Reidy standing up and being counted, but I don’t think he’s to blame… Brunt had another poor game and may benefit from being dropped for a match, and it seems obvious to most that Odemwingie and Long can’t play together and as Long is currently in the better form of the two, I’d play him up top with a creative attacking midfielder such as Dorrans or possibly Tchoyi in behind him.
Agreed on Diouf. I’d rather us sign nobody than that cretin. I highly doubt that anything is to be read from that rumour though.

Reid you by far the best player for us on Saturday I dont blame you,
Just wished some of the other player’s would take a look at their selves and put their hands up and say they were awful.
I also dont want that horrible cretin Diouf, what a horrible dirty man he is.
Boing! Boing!

Having seen the other report, it’s reminded me to question those booing the decision to replace a defensive midfielder with an attacking one when we’re losing… Anyone want to shed some light because I really didn’t see the problem?

Reid I’m sorry mate but you’ve got to take the blame for that goal. The way you and Morrison just let Moses walk passed you in the lead up to the penalty was really poor, apart from that you played well mate. On the diouf issue if he scores some goals to to keep us in the league then why not, because we need something if we can’t beat a poor Wigan side. Everyone deserves a second, third, forth chance don’t they?

ME THINKS WE ARE IN FOR A LONG WINTER WHERE ARE WE GOING TO WIN THE POINTS FROM WE DONT LOOK A TEAM AT ALL, ODDY WELL A ONE SEASON WONDER HE WOULD STRUGGLE IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP AT THE MOMENT ROY SAYS IT WILL WORK UPFRONT I CANT SEE IT MYSELF HE DRAGS LONG DOWN TO HIS STANDARD WHEN THERE TOGETHER, SLOPPY BACK FOUR I HOPE NOT BUT I FEAR THE CHAMPIONSHIP ALONG WITH WIGAN/BOLTON ITS BEEN SO POOR THIS SEASON

I’m still adamant there is no difference between our claim and the one given Wigan. Both players had their standing leg whipped away. One gets a penalty the other gets a yellow card. Another referee that could cost a head coach his job. Make the referees job a part time one again. What does the fourth official and assistant referees supposed to be there for?.

8 bakes-
you may be right,Diouf may have sharpened up his skills.
He may now be able to spit more accurately at the fans than he’s done in the past………

10 blue baggie?(from wolverhampton)-
the fact that you think Albion will struggle along with the ‘other’ two poor teams,Wigan and Bolton, but refuse to mention the worst of them all-wolves-shows exactly who you are.
Pathetic disguise-
watch out,Rooney’s about……….
….me thinks……….

Sherlock, most of the time i think your posts are daft….but im inclined to agree with you over Diouff..we dont need him at the Albion.

I feel i may be in a minority here and don’t get me wrong El haj Diouff is a nasty little
man with issues but he ruffles feathers and
upsets people both in his own team and the
opposition.
We have a reputation as nice little Albion
and everyone pats us on the head for playing
lovely football and that’s it. Put that looney tunes in the mix and who knows because he actually aint a bad player and i think he may be just what we need at the moment.

15 Burnley Baggie-
yes,we have a reputation as ‘nice Albion’,that goes back to 1879,and many people still see us as a ‘family club’.
That being the case,we don’t want any nasty scumbags on the pitch representing us,and wearing our colours.
El Diouff’s been trouble in the past, and has been caught on film more than once spitting at the fans.
So how would you feel if your young son or daughter was on the receiving end of what was launched from his mouth?
If he ever came to us,my season ticket would go straight back to the club offices, and I know others who would quickly do the same thing.

15, so what we need to revive our season is a divided dressing room and a bad reputation? and tennis elbow reckons my posts are daft?
is the pub open yet?

Burnley,
Diouf is a nasty piece of work, don’t fancy him at ALBION mate. Rather throw a couple of bucks at wolves for Fletcher as Mick will be getting rid.
