West Brom 1 Tottenham 3
Saturday 26th November 2011, 5:10PM GMT.
Late goals from Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor condemned battling West Brom to defeat.
The strike duo sealed all three points as title-chasing Tottenham battled back to maintain their stunning form despite a below-par display at the Hawthorns.
Youssouf Mulumbu headed Albion ahead on 10 minutes, only for Adebayor to equalise before half-time, netting the rebound after his hotly-disputed penalty was saved by goalkeeper Ben Foster.
The Baggies played their full part in an entertaining game and should have led through Simon Cox or Chris Brunt, who both missed good chances.
But Defoe hit them on the break with eight minutes to go and Adebayor added a third in stoppage-time, as Roy Hodgson’s men chased an equaliser.
Peter Odemwingie appeared as a late substitute after a week of friction over his knee injury and headed an excellent chance wide with the scoreline at 2-1.
It was honours even at the end of a high-tempo, controversial first half.
The Baggies started brightly and went ahead through a superbly constructed goal on 10 minutes when Gera chased a James Morrison through ball and fed Steven Reid, whose perfect cross was head in by the unmarked Mulumbu.
And West Brom continued to press but they were hit by the loss of Gera on 21 minutes, who twisted his left knee while attempting to change direction.
Spurs levelled on 25 minutes when Lennon nipped behind Shorey, who attempted to win the ball from behind and was penalised when Lennon went down.
Referee Lee Probert pointed to the spot, although replays suggested there was minimal contact.
Adebayor saw his penalty saved low down by Foster, but the Togo international reacted quickest to force home the rebound.
Probert was at the centre of most key incidents before the interval and denied the home side penalties when Jerome Thomas and Shane Long went down in the box.
They thought they had scored when Spurs goalkeeper Brad Friedel appeared to carry a deflected Reid cross over the goalline, but the officials awarded a free-kick for a shove by Gareth McAuley.
The second period was quieter, although West Brom should have been ahead eight minutes after the restart when James Morrison did well to trick his way into space on the right and cross for substitute Simon Cox, who headed too close to Friedel.
The Baggies had to weather a period of heavy Spurs pressure but, as the final whistle approached, the hosts gained the upper hand and pressed for the win.
They should have been ahead when Morrison produced a fine jinking run and pulled the ball back for Chris Brunt, who blasted over with his right foot from the edge of the box.
But the Baggies were hit with the sucker punch on 82 minutes when Spurs broke away to take the lead.
Adebayor’s flick found Defoe, who side-stepped away from the backpeddling Jonas Olsson before rifling a low shot past Foster.
And it was Adebayor who completed the scoring the stoppage time, bundling home after a cross from Gareth Bale.

Battling performance from us first half but we need to take our chances.
I wasnt happy aubout spurs 12th player dressing up as a ref though…
Report abuse
battling performance today against a very good spurs side, spurs just had that extra quality. could not ask any more from the lads just keep the performances going like that and we will ok
Report abuse
For me agreat performance spoiled by a very inept referee again. Why oh why do we always seem to get the wrong end of decisions. By half time if it hadn’t been so bad it would have been laughable. Still plenty of positives, we look like we are beginning to know our best team and considering Spurs will be top six at least, i thought we looked more than able. the next three games will be crucial to taking the pressure off and should keep us mid table by Christmas. looking good at the moment

Last week,I didn’t comment on the game straight away, but having just got back,I’m still angry and frustrated at what is now all too familiar-
premiership football games are played with the so-called ‘big six’,AND the Referees on one side of the line, with the rest of us on the other.
It wouldn’t have surprised me in the least if Ref.Lee Probert had followed the Spurs players into their dressing room at half-time,patted them all on the back, then had a cup of tea with Harry.
I’ve just looked at a couple of reports on the game, here and the BBC,and some of the quotes-
‘The scoreline flattered Spurs’.
‘Replays show the Spurs penalty was ‘minimal’ contact’
‘Jerome Thomas was pushed in the back but no pen. was given’.
‘Shane Long went down when tussling with King, but were denied another penalty’.
‘Probert denied West Brom a goal when Brad Friedel appeared to carry the ball over the line, but gave Spurs a foul instead’
‘West Brom were complaining when Sandros-already booked-did not receive a second yellow card for a late challenge on Mulumbu’
etc.,etc.,etc.
We’ve been saying for years that the prem. is ’tilted’ in favour of certain clubs, and
something about the whole thing smells very, very badly.
I can’t wait for the ‘top’ clubs to break away from the English leagues, and hopefully they’ll take their devoted fans-by that I mean the Referees-with them.
Maybe then we can get back to grass roots,FAIR football games,in the way they used to be.
And start breathing fresh air for a change.

Played really well for 45 mins against one of the best teams in the PL – if only we had taken a couple more of thise first half chances, the game may have turned our way?
Hope Gera’s not to bad, as we look great with him in the team – Thomas gets more involved when Gera’s on the pitch.
Anyone noticed how well Jimmy M is playing in the centre?
Not much too worry about if we carry on playing like the last 2 games?
I agree. An excellent result and performance.
BTW – the ref was shocking, but there’s no point moaning about it – its always been the same!
Only a couple of the PL refs have the balls to give fair decisions regardless of the team it affects (Howard Webb especially).
cantellorocket 78 you speak the words of which are in many of our minds. tilted may be a kinder way to say that certain refs need customs to look at their bank records and capital inventories. The ref today was appalling, i saw the ref say he didn’t see a challenge when everyone round me couldn’t help but notice he was facing the challenge claiming he was looking 90 degrees to his right. adebayour should have been sent off, we should have had 2 penalties or 1 at least and that ball over the line… come on. frustrated rant i do apolagise but as cantello said, the top six always get the benefit of the doubt to a seriously questionable degree. Positives though, Baggies we are looking top form and i think we can finish top 10 this year. Come on boys.

Great work rate, great desire, and a cracking cross/goal by us. However, its really frustrating to see us work so hard to get the ball and then give it away cheaply seconds after, if we could cut that out I reckon we could take points from anyone.

Probert should be suspendedfor that performance. Someone by me said he should be relegated to ref the Championship. Why? What have they done to deserve that? No one dare complain either or they are punished. It’s absolutely mad.
Good performance by the 11 in our team against 12 on the other team. I’ll say it once more: THE PREMIERSHIP STINKS !

In my anger I forgot to apologise for not making it in the Vine. I was outside at 2pm, normally early enough to get a parking spot, but not today. I ended up back on the main road outside a tyre shop, far too late to make a walking detour.

3-1 flattered them though they did grind us down second half. I’m sort of not too upset because we played some good stuff and looked comfortable as their peers for large parts of the game.
I was concerned having seen how they battered Villa but am proud of how played.
Few observations:
Unlucky on Gera, thought we lost some momentum when he went. Hope he’s ok. Cox played ok but doesn’t cover the ground Zolly does.
Ref. Again.
Defoe. Again.
Penalties, yes we were probably short changed again but there looked a couple of dubious handballs by Shorey & Jonas second half too.
Play like this more often than not and we should be ok. Many more refs like the last two and we’ll all have high(er) blood pressure.
CR78 (4) Couldn’t have put it better myself. I’m tired of being on the wrong end of poor refereeing decisions, it really is becoming all too familiar. It’s difficult enough playing these ‘big teams’ without the referee gifting them all the decisions. On a positive note I thought we played brilliantly today, James Morrison had a superb game, the best I’ve seen him for ages. I was so proud of the Baggies today, the fans were superb too and really supported them when they most needed it. At least they tried rather than the drivel served up by The Vile, god, imagine having to watch that every week.
And ooh that Shane Long, how gorgeous is he.
Come on you Baggies. Boing Boing.

Deserved better ref an awayer or banker i think thats what the chants were? Feel we lost momentum
after Gera went off but oh an awful decision for their penalty normally refs even it up by giving
us one but would we have scored? Penalty gave them belief Odemwinge should have levelled score.
However we played well against a side on a title
winning run. Did see Defoe was doubtful before
game but he did score five for reserves tuesday
he dose’nt do a lot but he scores goals.
Like all fans hope Zoltans ok tragic if out again
after what he’s gone through.

Decent performance in spells today but spurs were the better team and Adebayour should have scored at least four or five.

Wasn’t at the game, had to rely on radio and MUMOTD, was the game as one sided has MUMOTD suggested, because it didn’t sound that way on the radio? There was no mention of Fridel debatabley taking it over the line, or the two penalty shouts that we had, the first of which, according to the radio, was a identical situation to the one given to Spurs? is that true? if it is how Lawrenson can state when referring to Shorey, and I quote “once you touch the opposition player in the penalty area, you know its going to be a penalty” then MUMOTD of the day not even show it, beggars belief. I am going to have to stop watching this biased, propaganda led, so far up the back side of the “chosen few” teams programme for two reasons, one, it doesn’t do my blood pressure any good, and two, I cant afford another new LCD this side of Xmas when I put the screen through!
On a lighter note, good to see Ferguson thought the penalty awarded against Man U (how dare they!) was a travesty! why? there was as much, if not more, contact made by Rio as there was by Shorey, so whats the beef? because these things are not in the script to happen at O.T. perhaps? Try having a penalty awarded against you in your last three home games, or, four out of your last five games Fergie, now that’s a travesty!
I was so angry last night with ‘the man in……(add whichever opposition colours you wish to)’,that I forgot to say-
I was very proud of my team yesterday, despite playing a Spurs side who are 3rd in the Prem.,on a red hot run,and included a ’12th man’,I thought we were the better team in the first half, and had we held out for at least a draw,no one could have said it wasn’t deserved.
There are far worse teams in the division, and on this display of form,we should be comfortably safe come the end of the season.
Proud to be a Baggie!!

I noticed yesterdays fans choice of music was for our Irish players. I’d like to choose the next games music and dedicate it to the officials.
‘Call Me Number One.’ As they seem to think they’re more important than the players or the game.
‘The Godfather Theme.’ Can’t think why as the Godfather is always fixing things and we all know our refs are fairness personified. (Is that okay mods?)
Entry of the Gladiators (The Circus Music.) To be played as the officials strut our, no explanation needed.

Not often you come out of the game feeling on a high after losing 3-1 but we matched them and deserved a draw. Even the Abominable Mr Probert allegedly the referee??????? couldn’t dampen my pleasure in the performance. Yes of course Spurs are better than us, they have a decent manager and a squad that cost 5 or 6 times what ours did but we were beaten by a dodgy penalty, a top drawer finish by Defoe and a breakaway when we were chasing the game. Combined these with fighting against decisions that would have seen Fergie end up like a Ribena berry and it was no surprise we lost.
7 GE.
Can I add Mark Halsey to that list as in my opinion he is one of the best.
15 P23.
Yes didn’t Morrison have a good game. Some players need a couple of games to get back and I think some of the people knocking him in recent weeks owe him an apology.
17 Realistic Baggie.
Very boring please go back where you belong and glory in the fact that your ‘park the bus’ policy worked perfectly in the second half against an out of form Chelsea. Shame you were already 3-0 down.
18 DB.
Unfortunately a linesman at Old Trafford forgot where he was and gave a penalty similar to the ones we’ve suffered from in the last three home games. Consequently Ferguson has had a rant about it on TV which means that the ‘Big Six’ decisions will get worse not better. As someone said earlier we all have to grin and bear it cos it ain’t gonna change.
Nearly forgot. It was another good team performance where every player did well. I said the same after the Villa and Wolves games but the difference is that as well as players performing well we played like a team similar to last weeks performance when all the parts worked like a well oiled machine.

We Only Need – Was about to write the same quote from MOTD. If touching a player in the penalty area constitutes a penalty then we should have had 3. MOTD continues to be a waste of 90 mins for us ‘little teams’.
I feel sorry for whoever is playing Man Utd next. With the fuss that Ferguson is making over an admittedly terrible decision, it will be normal service resumed for them. How quickly Fergie forgets the plethora of decisions that go their way every game.

If Spurs and Sunderlands were penalties then ALBION should have had three. Something has to be done about these cheating referees before the fans start rioting on grounds and their clubs will take the blame instead of these poor excuses for referees. On Match of the Day, two twerps stated there was noting wrong with Rooneys attempt to take the leg off a player that was grounded, the coward. All the twerps said was the player on the ground cleared the ball too quickly for Rooney. You couldn’t make it up. Blimey I could go on and on. These so called referees should be charged with bringing the game into disrepute.
(17)
Realistic Dingle,
As you only watch MotD, I’ll inform you ALBION defended brilliantly. The game was end to end and worth paying to see. After being cheated and we were pushing for a win did Spurs get the upper hand. Our game wasn’t done and dusted at half time like Chelseas, where they only went through
the motions after half-time. Glad to be of help.

I can’t really add anything to what’s been said. Going away from the ground I was gutted because we had more than matched Spurs, but yet again we get an incompetent referee. You can accept the odd decision to go against you, but not to that degree. I am sick and tired of it, all i want is for us to be treated fairly. The time has come for referees to become more accountable but we know that won’t happen because it’s only little old Albion isn’t it.
Someone tell me how the Spurs penalty was any different to the 2 we should have had, and how a referee and 1 linesman cannot see a a goalkeeper carry a ball over the goal line?

4CR78 Completely right in everything you say there.Even with the ref clearly one sided, we were looking very good with Gera and Long playing really well, and Mulumbu & Mozza controlling midfield. Once Gera went we lost a lot, and once Long went we lost a lot more, but still should have had another couple of goals.OP’s chance, Brunts chance, and a couple of chances for Cox should all have been buried.Good performance, excellent atmosphere, and only lost due to more incompetent or one eyed refereeing.

its ok patting ourselves on the back and saying good performance but the hard facts are that we lost.
yes,the ref was poor but the key moment was Brunts miss.to go 2-1 up at that time would have seen us surely go on to victory.
we have to be more “savvy” and played out the last 10 minutes for a well deserved point against a good footballing side.
the next 3 games give us chance to get more points on the board but lets not forget that the opposition will be thinking the same about us.
onwards to QPR and our “good” friend Mr Warnock

Watched the game in a Palma Nova pub,on the next screen was the Dingles game which helped soften the defeat but only the actual defeat cause the game and the performance had so many plus points.
If Gera had stayed on we would’ve gone in at half time ahead cause we were really up for it and they were off the pace.
Mulubu’s first surge forward when he put too much on a through ball that would’ve put an off balance Long through on goal,I said to myself,he’s up for it and his performance was only bettered by Jimmy Morrison, who was 9.95 out of 10 and his performance should prove to his critics that they were wrong.
The way he’s changed his roll in the team should also prove,to his critics, that Roy is a 1st class coach.
The way we played should also dispel the myth of Roy’s preference towards negative football,
Yes we were a little over run in the end by a very good Premier team on a great run but we kept going forward and as you all saw,we should have scored.
After the match I drove to the local Industrial estate, which is 5k from our house in the village where I parked up and walked through the lanes home.I was on such a high from the performance, especially Jimmy’s and feeling proud to be a baggie that it seemed like 15mins later I was walking into the village,if they keep this up I’ll be 2 stone lighter.

I have serious doubts that you’re a genuine Albion fan,for two reasons-
1)There’s a certain wolves fan called ‘laughingstockwolf’ who comes here with false names, and posts EXACTLY the same as you-starting by giving Albion a little praise, then criticising us by ‘quoting’ negative facts and figures.
and 2)If you were a genuine fan, you’d know that the only time we don’t score many goals recently is against the ‘top clubs’-Liverpool,Arsenal and Spurs.
Since the start of last month we’ve scored 2 against Sunderland, wolves, villa and Bolton-

Worcester Spur, no blinkered specs, just fed up at key decisions constantly going in the favour of the so called bigger teams. You out of anyone should be aware of this after some awfull decisions when you have played Man Utd. But i am sure the referee was spot on in those games as well!
I saw no contact on Friedel when he turned 180 degrees with the ball carrying it over the line. If the ref gives the penalty for minimal contact on Lennon, then he has to do the same for the Thomas incident, and as for the the Long/King incident, that was a stonewall penalty. Adebayor should have seen red for kicking out off the ball. And Sandro, was booked early in the first half, then got away with three bookable offences after it, so don’t tell me to take the blinkers off as those incidents are their for everyone to see.

To get the refereeing decisions into perspective, it isn’t just us that suffers. I watched the Liverpool Man City game on Sky yesterday. Martin Atkinson is an old style ref and obviously remembered the days when he was expected to give every decision Liverpool’s way and hadn’t realised that Man City are now one of the big boys.
Suarez was on top form and whenever his front teeth brushed the grass or if a slight breeze breeze ruffled his shirt he went down like a ton of bricks. Eventually even Atkinson was too embarrassed to give fouls every time but it didn’t seem to occur to him that he could book the poor little dear for diving.
Atkinson gave almost every decision Liverpool’s way in response to the usually ‘knowledgable’ Anfield baying for every slight touch.
However the most appalling sight of the game wasn’t Atkinson but Skirtel. Far be it from me to defend Balotelli but his forearm brushed Skirtel’s neck with no great force. For some reason Skirtel rolled around the floor holding his face. No blame on the ref as he has to have a belief that players still have some morsel of self respect and won’t cheat to get a fellow player sent off.
Shameful. I wonder what Tommy Smith and Ron Yeats would think of a centre half behaving like this.
Perhaps Sir Alex being so upset about the standards of officialdom will force the PL to launch an investigation into it. Ha ha. Ha ha ha ha ha. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

re: 41 ‘worcester spur’-
isn’t it strange that-
the Spurs fans I’ve known over the years have all called us ‘West Brom’ not Baggies?
That ‘this one’ apparently lives in the midlands, and reads the E&S site, but didn’t join in the pre-match build-up last week?
That of millions of references to Tottenham you could use, this one calls himself ‘Spur’.
And that he saw nothing wrong with the ‘big’ decisions, but apparently most of the controversial ones weren’t shown on the MOTD highlights (that ‘worcester spur’ obviously watched)?
It could be shadrag, but it’s certainly a wolves fan-
I can’t think of any other fans that have such a lack of imagination or brainpower……….

isn’t it sad that Suarez was born with the kind of natural football ability that I dreamed of having when I was young, but after watching him a number of times, the only image in my head is him sitting on the ground, crying like a baby, and waving an imaginary card in the air?
Maybe that reflects the repulsive side of modern football-
get a result, and whatever you have to do to get it-do it!
The end justifies the means………..

It would seem the Premier League has turned into ‘non-contact’ football in only half of the pitch – the part defended by the Albion.
Alan “I’m too **** to manage” Shearer and the other MOTD pudits seem to justify the ‘cheating’ that now blights the game. Yes, Shorey pulled Lennon’s arm but the TV shows it was not enough to make him lose his balance – so he dived! Thomas did the exact same thing, but he plays for the Albion!
I couldn’t see the tackle that brought Morrison down; Long’s shout wasn’t convincing and I doubt any Ref would allow a charge on the ‘keeper. What was clear was that Sandro ought to have had 2nd yellow, but Mulumbu shouldn’t have reacted the way he did.
I was impressed by work-rate and thought the score harsh. With hindsight one could question the way we “pressed for winner” in the last 15 and got caught on the counter attack, but that’s all very well after the event. Morrison had his best game for two years, Gera was missed after he went off, Brunt still leaves me scatching my head.
And no, I’m not from the dark side like a couple of fools on here.

I said earlier, THE PREMIERSHIP STINKS. After reading all the above I still think it. We have referees that are so bad that the question arises, ARE THEY? Or do they get tapped up? One only has to think of the HUGE amounts of money betting brings, cricketers selling their own team and country down the Swanee, MPs grasping and thieving expenses. I won’t add more. You can. eg FIFA.
Regarding the ‘goal’ by their keeper. I honestly believe the linesman flagged for a goal, he pointed instantly to the centre and in our direction, but the ref gave a foul which uses a similar signal from the linesman.
Kev. I’ll try hard to still be alive and be in Bilston. I still have an up-to-date passport for Wolverhampton from the time I worked there back in the mid 60s. It would seem from MOTD that ‘Lawro’ understands these new rules you refer to. Shame nobody told the ref about it when Gary Neville brought Graham Dorrans down last season.

If you are genuine I’d refer you to Steve Bruce’s comments last year. He said ‘when I was at Man Utd we used to get a lot of bad decisions but you don’t notice when they go your way. When you’re with lower table clubs you do notice how many decisions go the way of the big boys.’ Maybe not his exact words but the gist of them. It’s easy to be magnanimous about bad refereeing decidions when you’re on the right end of them. I don’t think you were quite so forgiving about the two yards over the line gola at Old Trafford were you?

blame the ref til the proverbial dairy animals come home. second half we missed sitter after sitter, then got caught by the sucker punch
yes the ref was awful, but we weren’t beaten by his poor decisions, we were beaten by a team who don’t need to create a dozen chances in order to get a goal

Worcs Spur:
I’ll give you the benefit of doubt and assume your genuine. I’ll also ignore most of the dubious decisions that we “feel” went against Albion.
I’ll just ask you this:
Can you please explain to me the difference between the two practically identical penalty incidents involving Lennon & Thomas? Why one was “correctly” given but the other was clearly never a pen?
Please answer asap as this paranoia could send me over the edge.

Yes I heard Hodgson as well. Personally I am sick of mamagers claiming referees are losing them matches, for this reason. When did you last hear a manager say that a referee won them a match? You cant have one without the other. Better to look to your own players for answers to why you lost. Chris Brunt blazes over Defoe scores. Back to the training ground – head and knee over the ball son.

I know where you’re coming from with this BUT…
It’s easy to say that we should put our chances away and therefore shouldn’t complain about bad refereeing decisions yet occasionally I see Man Ure* have a game at Old Trafford where they struggle and miss chance after chance and lo and behold the referee gives them the benefit of one of these dodgy decisions.
Now they’re miles better than us anyway and probably don’t need this assistance but they get it anyway and it don’t half make a difference at the end of the season.
* In the interests of fair play this scenario applies to other leading brands as well.

Worcester Spur – I think even the most blinkered Spurs fan can understand our frustrations when every decision went against us. Your pen and our 3 pen appeals were all debatable, yet all four decisions went in your favour. Add to that the Friedel own goal and the fact Sandro should have walked and hopefully you see where we’re coming from.
I thought the Friedel one was the biggest shocker. He turned 180 degrees and put the ball in his own net before the slightest of contact from our player. The wry smile on his face said it all.
That being said, we are still the architects of our own downfall. Missed chances and sloppy defending for the first two goals (mixed with a little bit of genius from Spurs) were contributors. But then we don’t have a team that can cope with continually bad decisions from the referee. Not many can.

61, bully hoo, yes i see where you’re coming from as well, but if we KNOW (and for heaven’s sake we ought to by now) that we ain’t gonna get any help from the ref, doesn’t that make it all the more important that we help ourselves by taking our chances?
i hear Warnock’s struggling to find a keeper for saturday’s game. he obviously hasn’t watched our performance against Tottingham else i doubt he’s be worrying his pretty little head about it

I’ll excuse your mistake dear boy as you hadn’t had the chance to read my last post.
I guess you’re ignoring Adebayor’s cataloge of misses and nobody on here is saying that Spurs didn’t play well and possibly deserve to win, they’re a fine team and played well. Us lesser lights would just like a fair crack of the whip. I say again, remember how you felt robbed by Roy Carroll at OT?
