Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
West Brom 2 Bolton 1
Saturday 19th November 2011, 5:10PM GMT.
Shane Long made a stunning return to action at West Brom with the winning goal against Bolton.
His 56th minute header ended up separating the teams after an Ivan Klasnic penalty had cancelled out the opening goal from Jerome Thomas in the first-half.
Long’s performance was a super bonus for the Baggies, the striker having stepped straight off the training ground and without any match practice to resume his season after a four-week lay-off because of injury.
But the West Brom fans will also be raving about the return of one of the Hawthorns favourite sons, Zoltan Gera.
Gera showed all of his old touches to prove there is plenty of life in him yet while there were also stand-out performances from Nicky Shorey, Thomas and Jonas Olsson.
Gera set up Albion’s opening goal with an eye-of-the-needle pass which took out Bolton’s defensive line and played in Thomas, who dribbled the ball around the advancing Jaaskelainen before scoring comfortably.
But the lead lasted only five minutes before Thomas was again penalised in the area for a challenge on Fabrice Muamba.
The decision had West Brom boss Hodgson in a rage in the technical area but Klasnic shrugged off the controversy to scorer with a classic, bottom corner spot-kick.
If the first-half had been even, including a vital off-the-line clearance by Mulumbu from a Gary Cahill corner, the Baggies were at their fluent best 26.221 in the second-half.
Gera was always influential and Shorey was particularly impressive in support from full-back.
It was Shorey’s 56th minute cross, at the end of some vintage Albion passing exchanges, which gave the remarkable Long the chance to steer a sideways header into the left hand corner.

Man of the game Roy Hodgson, gets it right again. We needed to keep the ball up-field longer to relieve the pressure off our defence. This was put right after the break. Jerome you are not a defender so can you refrain from entering our box, that apart you had a good game. Welcome back Shane “Duracell” Long, Zoltan Gera, Nicky Shorey, Brilliant. Jonas Olsson and Steven Reid had good games. Ben Foster, keep up the good work. Another grand win.

Two teams wanting to win, both playing some good stuff and we did win. There is a contented glow when it works out like that. Even had we drawn, it was entertaining. Long is beginning to look like the ‘find of the season’. How he gets up to his headers is all about timing and his shielding and distribution had me drooling. There wasn’t a weakness today, everyone put in a full 90 minutes. I thought the ref a bit biased at times and our old friend Robbo was a bit lucky to get away with ‘that tackle’ on Mulumbu. He could have broken the lad’s legs.
PS: I met Sir Terence outside the ground, all jolly and chatting with mates. I may have coaxed him back on here. The lovely little Nicole was sporting crimson hair today as she worked in the booth.

Super performance and comfortably our best display of the season. Shane Long, what a player, despite being out for weeks looked like he’d never been away. Gera was the player we all remember, committed, intelligent and with that touch of class. Has lost a yard of pace but he has that quality that can open up a defence.
That’s more like it Albion, what did you think Peter?

Only negative for me was Thomas, another clumsy challenge in the box giving away a penalty, and it was for me.

Good result in fact I thought we made them look better than they were by giving the ball away cheaply a little to often, thought Shorey was the unsung player of the day with some of the balls he drifted in and McCalley did well also with his no nonsense defending. was a little nervous that JT might get sent off at some point when he was getting worked up, great finish from him also.
Zoltan we can see your itching for a goal, relax mate it will come.

A much needed three points but some of our midfield passing was shocking and we were all to ready to go back rather than attack. We rely to much on (superb) shane long, I disagree with one comment to say it was our best display of the season, I think it was bolton’s poor quality allround that made us look better on the day.
A few observations:
Long – how good to have him back, what a difference.
Gera – class, great energy.
Mulumbu – great second half.
Shorey – good on him, great return.
Can’t really fault anyone.
Bolton – they look shot don’t they? There seemed to be no urgency or passion, though we did batter them second half. Good, one more team to stay down there.
The ref and linesman on our side (I was in the Halfords today) were atrocious. Unbelieveable.
The report on Sky Sports website – what the? So one sided it’s barely palatable. “The outstanding Gary Cahill…” What? Long won every header. England centre half? He was run ragged. We’re hardly mentioned!
Let’s look forward to MoTD, more of the same no doubt. 10 minute debate devoted to the mystery of why Notlob are bottom 3 before we get a token ‘oh yeah, they were in the match too…’

lets not be to hard on the ref, after all he did give us a goal that was clearly offside.

great performance, top result etc..etc… i echo what everyone else on here is saying, but where the hell do they keep getting these incompetent (even biased one way) refs from? The man in the middle had an absolute stinker yet again (is it something to do with the Hawthorns?) no cards for Robbo & the other Bolton player (Eagles?)who kicked out at Reid (think Beckham Vs Argentina) both could’ve been red! Not to mention a sucession of strange, just plain wrong decisions and another iffy pen. Sorry to be negative, but these clowns are starting to really get to me now. we win the match and everyone forgets the clown!

What a difference Shane Long makes. Observations:
1) Despite being out for 4 weeks, he never stopped running, never gave up on anything and generally frustrated, out jumped and ultimately over ran Bolton’s defenders. Welcome back Shane.
2) I thought Gera was class today and has hopefully solved our 4-4-2 vs. 4-5-1 conundrum. Zoltan is experienced and bright enough to know how to play in the hole behind Shane. His link up play and energy were superb. He was also the reason we played more football rather than the “hoof ball” and why, second half in particular, the ball hardly left the Bolton half.
3) Foster, Shorey, Reid, Mulumbu and Olsson also did their bit.
4) Despite scoring the first, Thomas still frustrates me. He easily had the beating of the 20 year old right back but wasted numerous opportunities 2nd half to put the game to bed with either poor passes or poor decision making. He should have been subbed 15 minutes earlier than he was because he’d stopped running (hard) after 65 minutes. His challenge for the penalty was clumsy to say the least.
5) Overall, a good win and performance. With Shane and Zoltan back, I feel we have a great opportunity to put a little run together and cement our position in the 8th – 12th range.

I’ve played both ‘penalties’ frame by frame this morning. Thomas was a mite clumsy in his challenge, ‘soft’ penalty given, but within the rules if you want to be pedantic.
Then there was the challenge on Long, about 3 yards from goal in a scoring position maybe.
“Did he cause him to lose his balance?” said the BBC commentator. Well, if a two handed shove in the small of the back causes the recipient to roll over at speed…er…yes!
Finally, imagine Old Trafford, Rooney, say Jonas in the same scene. I rest my case.
I agree with Cyril and RH, even if we hadn’t won the performance was there. I still think there’s more to come but that will do fine for now.
There seem to be a few backhanded digs at Peter Odemwingie. It’s not his fault he’s picking up injuries, don’t forget last season he was the man that kept us up so please cut him a bit of slack we’re not Wolves fans.
Very strange refereeing and as we won we can’t be accused of sour grapes.
The penalty. Very soft anyway but I think our players were complaining because Wheater made no attempt to head the ball but barged McCauley as he was trying to make his clearing header. Because of this the ball dropped on the edge of the area instead of halfway to the halfway line.
To follow that we then have their defender holding Long and finally wrestling him to the ground in a way that Berra would have been proud of. Long is a very strong player and doesn’t dive but unless these prancing, posing p***s with whistles start awarding fouls to players that try to stay on their feet (Hunt for Wolves against Wigan comes to mind as well) then perhaps Shane will have to start taking a few lessons from Tom Daly.
WONOH.
Or SIR as I may start calling you (Statistician In Residence.) I’ve got a bit of work for you.
1) As we were inundated with Wulfies telling us they were above us after the Arsenal game, although it was only by one goal on goal difference SIR I’d like you to keep a record of which week it was. After all it may give them a glow during the long cold winter months of their relegation struggle.
2) Last season Shadrag was continually on here mocking our inability to keep a clean sheet. As Gary Lineker pointed out last night Wolves haven’t kept one since August. So SIR could you keep track of this and let us know when they pass our tally for last season.
The difference between us is that last season we were scoring enough goals to win games which Wolves are not (no Shadrag you can’t play Wigan every week) Wolves poor record is in spite of their £7 mill final piece of the jigsaw and the fact as Shadrag pointed out that we have two free transfer old men in McCauley and Reid (who were both superb again yesterday) and Jones from Div2 who also looks the part. We also have that free transfer ‘crock’ of an old man Gera struggling along.
I’m really looking forward to the lack of input from the dark side we should enjoy this week. BLISS.
PS. Sir Terry come home.

Chrisdingle,
Wouldn’t you just love him at the Custard-Bowl?.
Just one boo and that’s for the diabolical refereeing on Saturday in the Premiership. Especially the one governing the Wigan v Blackburn game. He couldn’t be bothered to pay attention. On our own patch, that was never a penalty as their player grounded Jerome with his right arm. Shane was pushed off the ball in their box. Oh and don’t forget lads, respect the officials. About time they tried to earn it.
BOING~~~~BOING~~~~JtH.

PS.
To confirm my anti-referee rant. All the talk from the Wigan Blackburn game is about THAT corner and I agree, if the ref had any reason to believe that Yakubu had played the ball WHY was the referee walking into the box with his back to the ball and following on from that surely as he obviously didn’t think it was in play he should have whistled and had the corner retaken.
BUT for me the penalty he didn’t give when Moses was clearly fouled as he ran into the box put the other decision in the shade. The referee had a clear unobstructed view and decided it wasn’t a foul. The man needs an eyesight test and to retake his referee exams or whatever they have to do to qualify and that goes for most of our other inept, overpaid officials (Sian Massey excluded.)

think we were playing them the wrong time, not so
amazed that Shane ready to play thought he would be

but teams are finding it harder to score against us
generally Foster has’nt been too busy in 90% of

May as well point out more folly while I’m at it.
May I respectfully ask the DA knocker’s to read Roy’s latest comments on the so called dead weight who knows nothing about football.
Roy’s words were,It’s very important that our recruitment is as fantastic as it is.
Dan does quite an incredible job liaising with the scouts and making sure they know KNOW THE THOUGHTS OF THE COACHING STAFF and coming up with names and researching them,in others words
NOT TELLING THE COACHING STAFF WHO THEY HAVE TO SIGN,just doing the ground work so the coaching staff can concentrate on the existing players.
I hope this will finally be the end of another
myth that breeds negativity after or if we loose two games on the trot.

I know that you rate JT and after his best game for a long time I would like to know, after a much better team performance on Saturday,if you think he is good enough for the Prem.
In the past you’ve defended him stating our,so called, defensive style of play, doesn’t allow him the freedom that suits his game but on Saturday which I don’t think can be described as negative, his total inability to beat the full back was infuriating.
In my defence, before some of you mention pot and kettle after my previous anti negative posts,I just think that a specialized left winger should at least sometimes be able to beat his full back as Dorrans showed with strength and speed late in the game.

I was dragged down the hawthorns yesterday, kicking and screaming, well actually I didn`t want to waste a free ticket and to see albion lose.
Unfortunately what I saw was a superb passing outfit, 11 committed players, a manager who can give a rousing half time teamtalk, a chap called Zoltan Gera who played like David Silva and a forward who knows how to play the lone role and how to score.
I`m even more depressed now, we have not progressed at all since our promotion unlike others who came up after us, ie albion and newcastle.
I really can’t add anything to that.
Well said Frobo.

I agree with Cyril about the ‘penalties’; Swarbrick generally speaking is a poor Ref.
Everyone has said it all really; Long was fantastic, Gera buzzed and the back five did a grand job. If I were to be ultra critical I would say both Morrison and Brunt made too many unforced errors, especially Morrison with some careless backheels. Today, however, I don’t want to be negative – it was a good team performance.
As for 13 – I wonder how long it’ll be before we can test your theory?

Very interesting. The gentleman that sits next to me is a level headed fanatic. He goes to every game home and away and sometimes goes to the training ground. On Saturday he told me he’d been talking to DA in the week. One thing was that we are trying to get Onuoha on loan with a view to a permanent move, I like this lad he looks a real footballer.
But to me more importantly DA asked him what he thought of the way the club was being run and what his hopes are for this season. The fact that a man in DA’s position who must be very busy can be bothered to ask fans what they think is something I find hugely encouraging. I’m not sure you would get this from many other PL club officials.
PS. Your other post got me going for a bit, I was still half asleep when I read it and it certainly woke me up with a jolt.
PPS. On your post at 21. Yeah did you read the Jonas Olsson interview where he said the players are right behind RH and want him to sign a new contract. The Detective Club all seem to have missed it as none of them have commented. For what it’s worth my opinion is that the contract doesn’t really matter because when he wants to go he’ll go, end of story.
20 New York.
I agree about Thomas and at the time I thought the same about Long as he seemed to have understandably run out of steam and then picked up the injury. However thinking in the cold light of day I suppose we have to trust the Manager to know what he’s trying to achieve.
17 P&G.
I was having the same thought this morning as I listened to Talksport, no mention of our game all over the weekend then on The Spots Breakfast we’ve had two mentions first as one of the games in hand Spurs should easily win then as one of QPR’s easy next couple of games before they have to play some good teams.
Sky, the Biased Broadcasting Company and most newspapers have the same opinion of us and I find it infuriating. But then I think hang on this is great it’s just like last season, we’re flying straight under the radar. Let’s just carry on stuffing it to these smug, lazy, incompetant ‘experts.’
And finally. A special mention for post 13 Dave Regal. Well done David it must have taken you hours to put together such a deep thinking, insightful post. I think you may be a genius ask your teachers if they agree.

Gera, Long- superb, as mentioned by everyone. Mulumbu some way back to his best too, getting his foot in everywhere.

Kev
Re: JT. You’re the self-professed man of positivity, I’m a bit disappointed to see you pick out JT after a good performance and 3 points. I don’t think Saturday was his best game in an Albion shirt by any stretch and you’re right in that he had more chance to get at the full-back than he has all season.
However, think about our stirring second-half performance. How much of our threat came from down the right-hand side?? It was virtually all down the left. I want to see JT skin his full-back as much as you, but even when JT’s not doing that, he draws two men towards him which helps others. Our best football came with the link-up play down the left, the over-lapping of Shorey and Gera running into those inside-left channels.
I personally think JT brings us another dimension and although he’s not at his best, he helped us win the game on Saturday. That will only help his confidence.
Is he PL standard??? In each of the 38 games no, but games last year like Arsenal (a), Wigan (h), Blackpool (h) amongst others, he virtually gets you points single-handledly, so he’s definitely capable of it.
In my opinion, if you take out the wing player from our side and replace him with someone functional e.g. Morrison with Scharner in the middle, then we become more predictable.
In your spirit Kev, we’ve won, we’re 10th, the football was much-improved and all’s rosy, so let’s get the vino out and enjoy it.

I do respect other peoples views when they are justified and not just knee jerk reactions after few games in a season where the manager is starting his first full term with new players, injuries, existing players struggling to find their form,in a stop start season and trying to find the best system that suits.
Come on Max! people, and I think you included, sorry if I’m wrong on that, have said that we should sack him,it’s so unbelievable it’s laughable.
Then we have the conspiracy theorist’s,when numerous players have stated publicly that they think he’s the best thing since sliced bread.
I could understand if we had played 25 games and were 19th in the table but at this time we all need to be pulling in the same direction and if that means keeping these extreme negative thoughts to your self and me trying to make people think twice about airing them in public because negativity,on any subject, spreads quicker than positivity in these tough economic times then what’s wrong with that?
As for your opinion on DA after all the evidence to the contrary I’ve got one question,Were you on the jury that convicted Hanratty?

Kev, the verse to ‘It’s a LONG Way To Tippary’
goes like this:
“Paddy wrote a letter

If I make mistakes in spelling,
Molly dear”, said he,
“Remember it’s the pen, that’s bad,

My Mom used to sing it to me when I was small,

What I enjoyed most on Saturday was, Bolton came at us and wanted to win. WE wanted to win too. It showed. I like Thomas. On form he’s worth his weight in gold. Cut him some slack folks. A winger ON FORM will beat his man once in every two tries. He did that.

Fantastic win, and overall a good performance for the most part.
Am I alone in thinking that Bolton didn’t play that bad? they just happened to come up against a well in form Albion side that made them look like that, and I don’t see them being a contender come the final reckoning.
The least said about the ref the better.
I was bit surprised at the vitriol that was aimed at Robo, has I don’t recall it happening to the same degree at the same fixture last season, he even came over after that game to applaud our fans after that match, whats he done in the past 12 months that has changed that?

Lone if your out there, first part of £20 bet coming up next week, and what do you know, Wolves are facing a Chelsea that have lost two on the spin at home for the first time since……..? you lucky people!
(I don’t think they have ever lost two on the spin at home since the Prem was set up, but not 100%, if anyone wants to correct me, feel free)

Lost in a cloud of contentment, it hadn’t even crossed my mind to venture over to the dark side until I read your post. I’d just like to say thank you, some of those posts absolutely cracked me up. I find it particularly amusing the ‘Who R WBA Anyway??????’ retains his username whilst virtually conceding how terrible they are.

I know what you mean and sometimes quotes stink of diplomacy and appeasement, but it did strike me that the adjectives Roy was using were born out of genuine gratitude and admiration of work ethic and quality rather than simply answering questions that were forced upon him. Whether the same harmony exists between RH and JP, well that’s a different question, but if nothing else having DA as the go-between must mean relationships between manager and JP are less of an issue than they once were.

I’m a little disappointed that you jumped on me for asking for your opinion on JT’s ability to execute a basic requirement of a specialist left winger after saying that I thought he had a good game.
I admire your defence of JT,I think it’s misplaced but hope that your proved right eventually.Your also correct that most of our attacks came down the left, how much was down to JT,Shorey or Gera,I’m sure we all have different opinions and with the risk of being accused of being negative, and I can’t have that,I keep my big gob shut.
I never mentioned replacing a specialist winger with a functional player, but it could be argued that JT’s play on Saturday, albeit good was more functional than out and out wing play,I just think that winger should be able to beat his full back, maybe I’ve been spoilt in the past?

Kev on a serious note , my two biggest faults are my temper and my lack of patience, i hoped age would mellow me but it a’int, i guess we are what we are .

There’s only one song that fits perfectly for me, Aint no stopping us now, the Steve Walsh version, it works on so many levels.
1) Its aspirational, as the title suggests
2) Most people know the lyrics
3) Its made for a crowd to sing
4) I guarantee you wont be able to listen to it without taping your feet
It just ticks all the boxes, and how many other songs have “Boing, Boing, Boing” in the lyrics??? could have been written with us in mind, has it predates Rotterdam Termination Source Piong (1992) by some four years, check it out.

Stated many moons ago that Dan Ashworth was the runner between the Head Coach and Jeremy Peace, that he organised the scouting net-work, also formulated a prospective players names and form list in our price range that could be mulled over by the Head Coach.
Watched the football forum on T.V.(301). Kevin Davies (Bolton)agreed he owned two donkeys. When he is in the field with them, you can only tell the difference by his enormous elbows. This observation has no connection to our Kev.
P.S. ALBION weren’t mentioned.
Some Dingle up site states “If wolves were in the Conference they would still be better than ALBION”. Don’t know what makes him think wolves are Conference material. Search me.

A couple of years back,I was forced to watch a series of ‘Big Brother’,and halfway through, they introduced this big bird from Bristol on the show, she looked like the blond one from Abba, but was obviously sent there from the devil.
She ended up causing a real stir, upsetting everybody in the house AND the majority of viewers, all 25 of us.It was fantastic stuff.
When she was kicked out,the show became the most boring thing on the planet, and I couldn’t watch it anymore.
So promise you’ll never dream of becoming ‘nice’,it just wouldn’t work,would it……..?

Max don’t confuse disagreeing with disliking, while I love reading Rocket, Warren, Kev etc that rarely differ too greatly from my own views the mental stimultion comes from people like yourself, Streetly etc that stir the hornets nest and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
PS I thought your one word answer at 64 was a bit of a cop out.
Kev and Warren.
At the risk of joining the Splintered Bum Brigade I think the answer is somewhere in the middle. I was very frustrated with JT on Saturday but at the same time think he had a decent game but could have done more.

I went over after Rocket put up the Frobo Wolf post. I hope WONOH has that one copied and pasted.

Thanks I’d never heard that verse but it does seem to lend itself beautifully.
Mick he wrote a letter
To his Irish Molineux’,
Saying ‘its not getting better’
‘So write and let me know!
If I make mistakes in tactics,

Remember to give the team stick,
Don’t lay the blame on me”.
Sorry Kev I don’t mind being Macca but I think he might not be so happy.

Ha ha I wasn’t spewing conspiracy I promise, perhaps it was mischievously worded, I have no idea what Hodgson’s take on JP is, but I do feel more confident the manager of our football club will be happier liaising directly with Ashworth, a football man by all accounts, rather than JP- whose primary concern is purely financial. It might smooth the path between the two, it was just my way of hailing Ashworth!!
As for JT- I take your point and I can see what you and others have said and are saying. But I do still think he changes the dimension of our team. Think back to the TM days- pass, pass, pass, pass, but we never went anywhere. Without a midfielder with a willingness to get forward alongside Long/Gera, I think we’d become too reliant on a percentage ball into the front man, who’d have nowhere to go but back. At least JT gets defenders turning to face their own goal, through positioning alone, even if he’s not playing well.
I think he’s capable of being a good PL winger, hopefully Saturday and a decent run of winnable games gives him a bit more confidence and we start to see the bloke who played for us at the Emirates last season more often.

Loving this verse, first half sums up them down the road, and second half us,
I know you know someone who’s got a negative vibe
And if you only help it will only keep it alive
They really don’t have nowhere to go
Ask ‘em where they’re going
They don’t know
But we won’t let nothing hold us back
We gonna get ourselves together, come on
We gonna polish up our act, yeah
And if you’ve ever been held down before
I know that you refuse to be held down any more,
We really have to give this a try!!!!

81 Max,
I love it when people start talking music, and as you’ve mentioned ‘Macca’-
he had a single banned by the BBC back in the early 70′s,because of the political situation at the time, but the wolves fans have now adapted it to reflect their current mood-
it’s a catchy little ditty,called:
‘Give Mick back to the Irish…..’
Trouble is,the Republic don’t want anyone to spoil their current International success, and they haven’t got room to park a new bus……….

Best performance of the season and Roy plays a left back at left back! Brilliant.
Everone played well, and I like this 4411 formation – they couldn’t pick up Gera, who was superb. Hope Roy’s finally realised it is Long OR Odemwingie – although on present form – Long looks like the buy of the season for the whole Premiership, (as well as Aguero), and Peter may have to wait his turn, when he gets fit.
