Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
The England and West Brom way
Thursday 17th November 2011, 9:10AM GMT.
West Brom blogger Jarrod Hill can see parallels in the Baggies side boss Roy Hodgson has built and the ‘industrious’ England team of the last international break.
International friendly breaks often feel like an age and this one has been no different.
The England games provided very little in the way of excitement or entertainment ,but it was nice to see my favourite West Brom player Jonas Olsson giving the England players what for.
Two 1-0 friendly wins against Spain and Olsson’s Sweden has been greeted with a rather dour response from the media and fans alike, mainly due to the years of over hype and huge let down from our national side.
I only have one thing to say on the subject before we get on to all things Baggies.
The two wins have seen us play a different style of football to what we are used to, but we have won against a decent Swedish side and the World and European Champions.
OK, the style of football has been dire, but has England boss Fabio Capello now realised – or maybe accepted – that we simply do not have the players to play like other national teams on the road to success?
Has Capello now realised that functionality over entertainment will deliver results, if not plaudits, from those who crave the beautiful game? Some could argue that our own club are within a similar transition.
The football played by the teams built by Tony Mowbray and Roberto Di Matteo certainly entertained us but, at Premier League level, those teams all too often failed to deliver results and points.
Roy Hodgson arrived and quickly instilled a more defensive outlook, among a squad of players who had grown used to trying to outscore the opposition, no matter what the cost.
The style has certainly suffered, the formation has changed, we score fewer goals, and the level of excitement has definitely dropped.
But what has increased is our ability to grind out results, concede fewer goals and stay clear of relegation. Well, so far anyway.
I still feel the squad are adapting to the new regime and me, you and every other Albion fan are still adapting to it too. I can see what Hodgson is trying to do, he is trying to make us more functional as a team.
It took him time to impart the same blue print at Fulham, Liverpool never gave him the time or patience and his tenure with us is still in its infancy.
Premier League football brings with it its own pressures and the financial pitfalls, for those who lose their place at the top table, are frightening.
Too often, those pressures have chairmen nervously sitting with their fingers on the firing trigger, butr I would expect Roy to be given time and patience from a club that craves stability.
His experience gives him that little bit more latitude but, also, I would expect relatively more patience from us the fans.
Let’s face it, we have had our fair share of heart ache and let downs over the years, so the majority of Albion fans can see that our current situation is as good as we can expect.
The club is moving forward, the squad is continuing to progress and, if we can stay up again this season, it will be viewed as sustained success.
Becoming a regular member of the Premier League is the target chairman Jeremy Peace gave to Hodgson on his appointment last season.
What we are now seeing is how Roy thinks we can achieve that aim with the playing resources available to him. Maybe Capello is having similar thoughts?
Anyway, back to this weekend’s game. It feels like an eternity since our last home match and I cannot wait to be back at the Hawthorns cheering the lads on.
Roy will have his work cut out, as we are still suffering from a number of key injuries.
Paul Scharner, Peter Odemwingie and Shane Long are all expected to miss out and our head coach must decide what team and formation will help us get the goals to win the game.
Arguably, Long and Odemwingie are our first choice front pairing and their continued absence opens the door for Somen Tchoyi, Simon Cox, Zoltan Gera and others to stake their claims.
Personally I see ‘Zolly’ as a right midfielder, I have seen him in other positions but he doesn’t have the same impact.
I won’t attempt to pick a team I will leave that down to you, I just hope whoever does get chosen to play gives us a good performance and three points.
Up the Baggies.

We have a lot of winable games coming up, hard but winable. No games are must win at this stage of the season so if we draw or lose I hope nobody sees it as a disaster and all doom n gloom. No point in predictions as at the moment you don’t know which Bolton or West Brom side will turn up.

Jarrod—a nice optimistic twist on our season so far—-can’t say that I agree!!! What is a worry and is quite different from England is the stubborn way RH refuses to start with our younger players. Mulumbu seems to be out of favour, Scharner is injured and yet we play someone who claims to be Dorrans but I don’t think he is because I remember Dorrans and this ain’t the same player. Also JT is just not the JT I remember. And Brunt, Reid, PO, Mulumbu the list is endless. So mate what has happened to these lads??? Now England stuck youth in and we have Dawson and Thorne both cracking players but they sit on the bench—-no your analogy not there for me

Interesting analogy, I never thought that a 4-3-3 could look so defensive, How many times have we (England) looked world beaters only to capitulate at tournament football, would we look so defensive if Rooney was in the side, or are we building for a tournament without him.
4 seasons ago I argued that I would sooner see Albion play good attacking football give teams a run for the money and run the risk of relegation, I am starting to look at it differently very much like I am at England, we both seem to be going the Italian way, as for team news any idea Inside Man?

Hi Jarrod,
I’ve touched on the subject of our ‘style of play’ before, and have to say that it will no doubt always cause a mixed reaction.
The first full season I watched the Baggies play(as a nipper)was 1965-66,and that season we scored over 90 goals in the league, because we were an open, passing, attacking team, and as a young lad it was exciting to watch.
I’ve always loved this style (even when I used to play for the ‘Throstle Club’ pool team,I had no time for slow safety play,as a long time snooker player I used to smash the pack up and spray pots around the table),-but there’s another side to it-
that first season that I watched Albion,we also conceded almost 70 goals, because most of the team were in the opposition half for much of the game,so the Albion ‘keeper was often completely exposed.
This is fine if you have the players to score ‘one more than you’,but as we’re struggling to find the net this season,we have to be more careful,or we’re in serious trouble.
Some people still cringe at Gary Megson’s style of play, and I think one season we won about 17 games by 1-0,but at least it was effective-
he got us into the prem. for the first time, and many fans are still very grateful for this achievement.
So I believe that if we can ‘ride this one out’,and do what it takes to stay in the prem. this season, then we’ll become more established, and be in a position to continue strengthening the squad-
maybe it’s just the price we have to pay to give us the best chance of maintaining our current standard.

If I hear any news this thread will be the first to hear about it. The only thing I know for certain is that Roy does not want to concentrate the training on one group of players like normal, as he does not know who will be fully fit and who won’t.

The analogy related more to the comparison of transition, a transition aimed at hopefully gaining results rather than being aethetically pleasing.

I do agree re JT and Dorrans, but there is a part of me that hopes their mixed form is due to the change in tactics and formation. I suppose only time will tell.

Could of done with these ‘winable’ matches coming at a time when we had a fully fit squad, as 3 of our most influential players are struggling to be fit. In my opinion we need Scharner & Mulumbu at all times in the middle (the stats prove this) if one is injured Thorne should replace them, although Mulumbu has not been at his best he will come good. Dorran’s isn’t a Premiership player (my opinion), he has all the skill in the world but you need more than that in this division. Hope Roy was using kidology when he said there is nothing to choose between any of his midfielders, cos Roy there is! We showed real glimpses of last seasons good form at Villa, and when we play like that we have more than enough to stay up. COYB!!!

I believe the fifteen game mark will tell us how our season will shape up. It is usually a good rule of thumb. Roy has tried different styles and players as we hurtle towards that mark. January could see an extra one or two strengtheners arriving. It augers well for the rest of the season. So sit back and enjoy.

I find I can’t get excited by England. Like Cantello, I remeber the fag-end of Jimmy Hagan’s team The sight of seemingly dozens of blue and white shirts streaming over the halfway line when we had possession was awesome, and probably spoiled me for life. Watching England, apart from brief interludes, with the likes of Joe Mercer managing, has been so disappointing. From Ramsey dropping Grieves, and the likes of Marsh and Statham hardly getting a look-in England seemed to have been on a downward spiral for 46 years! Do I want to remain in the prem at the expense of proper football? I dont know. I know I hate sundays when we’ve lost.

I find it interesting that TM’s building of Boro is based more on a sound defence than all out attack as he & RDM simply would not focus on a sound defence. If they had done so, we may even have been a more established premier league team than we currently are. There would be no need to change the style but the quality of defenders acquired were not good enough. What was in front of them, in general was fine. TM often went on about soldiers and artists – only Olsson was a soldier and he got the balance wrong.
It is improtant that the fans do not make this to be an all or nothing game, yes it is important not to lose but the games running up to the New Year will give us options to accumulate points. I feel that the next 5 or 6 games will help to determine how our season goes. Every game we play is winnable but the next handful are against those in our ‘league’.
I think that Kio above mentioned the importance of Mulumbu & Scharner in midfield. He is bang on, with Olsson and Long they are the spine of the team. I feel that the performance of these players is key to our team.
Let’s all hope for 3 points on Saturday nad get right behind the boys from the off.
Come on you baggies!

I don’t think any manager has a particular style – they just tend to manage similar style clubs and so cut their cloth accordingly. Apparently Big Sam took the West Ham job cos he is desperate to get a team to play flowing football – but if he doesn’t have the players he can’t do it.
I don’t think RH is a negative manager – he just manages clubs who do not have the right players to take on the best teams at open football.
If we stay in the prem we will attract better players and so play more expansive football – Pulis at Stoke is a good example. If our defenders are solid our midfield can be more creative.. etc etc…
Finally – defensive football does not guarantee success – Megson took us down with negative football, as did Robbo and Mowbray took us down with open football – its the quality of player that counts.

Hi Bomber,
I see what you’re saying with Albion and England, the major difference that I would cite (which sort of ties in with your post at 7) is Capello has a huge group of players to choose from and can change tactics and styles based on who we’re playing if he likes.
Hodgson to some extent has inherited a fundamentally attack-minded squad full of creative players and as you say, the likes of JT and Dorrans are suffering because of the change in emphasis. I do wonder whether these two will ever flourish playing this way in the way they both have done previously, it would be a shame if they didn’t. Similarly Odemwingie, it strikes me Long is far more suited to Roy’s idea of defending from the front and strikers chasing high balls into the channels down. Perhaps we’ll see a gradual change in personnel if Roy remains boss for a few seasons, in which we might lose some greatly talented footballers for less than we might have done 12 months ago if they’re not playing well.
I still, somewhat optimistically, hope that once Roy has laid his foundations defensively so to speak, and we become difficult to break down, we’ll become a little more adventurous again and not rely so much on percentage football. Time will tell I guess……

Interesting blog. There’s several ways at looking at the argument of style of play vs exciting football. I think probably that most Baggies fans just want to have a bit of stability in the prem and consolidate in there. I’m all for that but I want to see good football too. I’m still hoping that the players are adapting to what Hodgson really wants and will start to play better soon but I’m not convinced. What I don’t like is our midfielders not breaking forward, and this is definitely Hodgsons influence. Seems to me that there is a direct connection between Hodgson’s way, and the perceived drop in form of players like Brunt, Dorrans, Thomas, Mulumbu and PO. To be frank, I’m bored watching the Baggies this season and not even looking forward to games. That’s the reality for me whether we stop up or not.

Hi Jarrod.
Very good comparison with England. A caller to a phone in summed it up for me the other day when he complained ‘we shouldn’t play like this because we’re not Eire.’ The trouble is that a lot of fans and journalists still seem to think we’re Brazil and we should just go out and play other teams off the park. The truth is Eire are a lot closer to us and Spain have moved past us. So let’s be realistic and give other teams the respect they’re due.
I posted this on your previous blog this morning not expecting a new one until tomorrow but it seems to apply to this blog just as much.
Hi Jarrod.
I think Saturday’s game will be massively significant. We’ve had basically two sides of the fence in recent weeks.
Those that say ‘After two derby wins nobody was complaining so why complain after two defeats aginst so called big teams which we would expect to lose.’
Then the others saying ‘it’s not the results but the fact that performances haven’t been good.’
What’s the answer? The answer is I don’t know. At the risk of getting splinters in my backside I was pleased with the derby wins but they were against two teams playing poorly. The disappointing thing about the Liverpool and Arsenal games was that the team looked so disjointed and lacklustre.
What’s the reason. Is it the dreaded formation that the players we have can’t fit into? Or is it just that a lot of our players are simply off form? The defence has actually functioned well but the midfield looks a shadow of its former self (I hate the use of hindsight but I can honestly say when I saw the line-up at Arsenal I virtually adopted the ‘abandon hope all yea who enter’ banner.) Unbelievable that we had no midfield tackler TM would have been purring over a defeat achieved in this manner.
To lose both our main strikers together is unlucky (or an act of God If you try to find a way to excuse Hutton’s tackle.) If PO is fit for Saturday it will be interesting to see if we revert to last season’s formation and how it performs.
My own view is that Roy is getting the players to embrace a different system. As Cyril has said ‘it is very boring to watch at the moment’ but if it comes off it could put an end to those frustrating games where we’ve played the opposition off the park only to lose by the odd goal.
In answer to Max at 9 perhaps we’re taking a step backwards to take two forward. You need to have a solid base to launch forward from. That’s what I hope anyway.

9Max, (or may I call you Wall Heath), I am with you all the way on this. Just had an email from Richard in USA recalling the great times we had when we used to do ‘away matches’, things like Bury, Swindon-on-Snow with a free plastic bag for a mac. That was real football was his comment. You know, he’s right! I think so anyway. Cantello at No.4. Mate you remember that season for excitement. 90 goals one end, 70 the other. BRILLIANT!
If we become like Italy, I’ve done with it all. Too much like World War 1, trench warfare.

Roy’s realm is still work in progress, with a lot of players not at the top of their game, forgive me if I’m wrong but I didn’t hear you or any others of the present, shall I say disgruntled supporters, expressing these critical opinions after Roy replaced Di Matteo and he changed the way we were playing, and loosing, to a style that helped us finish 11th last season.

I’ve said before that too often we’ve been spoiled with the football we’ve been served up and this has led to a lot of football snobbery in some quarters.
Personally I would prefer to win playing attractive football but as we’re not Arsenal, City or Utd, I would rather we take Stoke’s approach and win at all costs. If this means the football on show is dire then so be it because on a Monday morning the poor football’s forgotten and all that’s left is the valuable 3 points.

As far as West Brom are concerned, I’d still like to believe that the negativity is more down to the players not being 100% sure 100% of the time of how to play the 4-4-2.
In the majority of games we seem to have started in great attacking shape (we have scored most of our in play goals early) but have tended to become more defensive as the half progresses. I cannot see us winning too many games this season coming from behind unless it’s from set pieces. 4-4-2 in itself should be less negative than 3-5-1.

Great Blog and good discusssion my fellow baggies.
One thing that springs to my mind is that Spain and Barcelona are the exceptions at the very top that prove the rule. Even Man City can’t keep a tight defence with the England keeper in goal.
We enjoy watching these teams because we realise their talent and cohesion is something rare and beautiful.
So when we return from our playstation dreams to the reality of the Hawthorns we need to see that to survive in the Prem and thus generate the security of cashflow to improve the squad, we need to first be hard to beat. Roy was appointed and changed that to some extent in the last games of last season in order that we stayed up which I recall looked a only distant possibility when Roberto was sacked.
Peace has done this without compromising the long term financial security of the club, and it’s frustrating off the pitch. Roy has a similar task to deliver on the pitch with the squad we have (and even with transfers in Jan the one JPs structure could afford). There will be some frustrating days ahead for the purests but keep the faith; because this consolidation is good even if it isn’t too exciting at times.

I don’t often disagree with Jarrod, but I do question Roy’s ability to fit square pegs in round holes.
I don’t subscribe, as I’ve said many times, to the idea that there’s only two ways to play – gun-ho or dour.
Perhaps people are okay with the George Graham philosophical school where grinding out 1-0 victories will do – getting a result is everything. I can’t put myself in that camp – boring and functional isn’t what attracted me to the Albion 34 years ago…

20 – TRBH – I’m on the same page as you mate. it’s all about change, patience and players needing to adapt. I think if you look at most established premiership teams, there’s an element of inconsistency about their performances – such is the entertaining nature of the league and it’s popularity. We are very much part of that now and I feel that if we are to move forward successfully, we can’t stay one dimensional. We have to be able to play different systems, with intelligence and respect for the opposition. I agree that we’ll need a strong midfield tackler in there throughout most games… but other players will need to step up to that all over the pitch too. My hope, is that whilst it’s not as pretty in the short term, the outcome will be a more effective, well balanced team that will still entertain us – without the emotional roller coaster of being the ‘yoyo’ team.
I’ll be there on Sat with my 2 boys and the father in Law – 30 quid for 4 east stand tickets – happy with that! Let’s hope it’s worth getting out the armchair for! I’ll be cheering regardless..

I have been a season ticket holder since 1971, apart from the season under Gould , not even my constitution was up to that.
Gary Megson put pride back in the Club and i think we were willing to accept the Football was not attractive because we were winning regularly for the first time in many years. No one questioned Roy last season because we were still attacking teams and scoring goals. This season when he has put more of his stamp on the team , there is no flair and the players are not performing like last season , Mulumbu for instance looks a pale shadow of last season. Cyril put it the best for me when he stated that he thought the team were having the Football choked out of them .
If we stay up doing it Roy’s way , then some will be happy , personally i will not be renewing my ticket because i turn up to be entertained and not bored to death . To many of our games this season have been to be quite honest , turgid .

I’m not sure where your coming from with your comment about Roy changing our style and us finishing 11th last season.
The reason I am so annoyed this season is that he changed the formation that WAS so successful last season. He came in and inherited a fluent 4-5-1 formation that suited the squad of talented midfielders we have and set about trying to organise the defence to be more solid. He balanced this well towards the end of the season and we finished playing some lovely stuff and at the same time looking a more cohesive unit.
I was really excited this summer when we signed Long as he would be perfect to push ODW for his place in a 4-5-1 and as a squad we would be stronger.
But for some reason Roy decided to change our style and formation to a rigid 4-4-2 and a more ‘long ball’ approach bypassing our talanted ball playing midfielders and thus leavining them totally disillusioned. That is why IMO Brunt, Thomas, Dorrans et al look off the pace. They simply don’t agree with how things are being done.
It’s ironic we play Bolton on saturday as IMO we are being turned into the next ‘Bolton’. Percentage football to grind out results.
I have grown up with the Albion playing passing football and it means more to me than just grinding out draw’s to stay in this greed league.
I am bored stiff this season and without being too pesimistic I can see us being involved in a relegation fight come the season end.

I think the real problem is that football is a game that encourages strong emotions but it’s also a game that lends itself to knee jerk reactions. It would be great if everybody was more patient but it would also be less exciting. I’m often tempted to lose it with a player that misplaces a pass or misses an open goal but IT DON’T HELP DOES IT? Confident players play better and players that are scared of making a mistake aren’t going to be confident.
Want proof, try the Moulinex.

There’s an article from Roy on here but the longer version is on the club website. It states that Roy thinks there is great room for improvement as a lot of new players have come in. This suggests that he is well aware that we haven’t played well. He also states he has faith in the players we have which doesn’t sound like someone that is trying to blame the players for our performances. Perhaps I’m too gullible but I prefer to call it positivity.

Let me start by saying in no way am I criticising Megson but during his time many fans criticised, not the end result but the way it was achieved ie grinding out 1-0 wins but you still turned up.
Roy has not been at the helm for 12mths and fans are threatening to jump ship yet in your words, fans were willing to accept Megson’s style cause we were winning.
We’ve played 11 games won 3 drawn 2 lost 5,4 against “top six” sides with new players, injuries, some players loss of form, which inevitably happens naturally and is not all down to,as Poole Baggie said IHO Brunt Dorrans and Thomas just don’t agree with Roy,how anybody can say that in Dorrans case with his injury record of late is beyond me,he just hasn’t had a consistent run,if you want another example of loss of form of a great player Torres springs to mind.
It could also be,as it’s been said by many, that last year we were an unknown quantity so teams are paying more attention to our star men from last season ie Mulumbu.
Trbhoo has inter mated and I’ve been bleating about for many a long year is the support from the crowd,if the crowd is nervous and negative it spreads to the players and definitely affects their play.
Trbhoo has also pointed out that Roy knows everything isn’t right at the moment, for various reasons,so all I and Trbhoo are saying is for ???? sake TRANQUILOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Roy’s not a magician, please, at least give him 12mths?I think it should be more but I realize we live in the “I want it and I want it now” world.
Peace and Love.

Kev, I was grateful for Meggo organising our club on the playing field and for the success
he achieved, but once he had effectively forced Mr. Thompson out I saw him as EGO, not Meggo. Then the football. It just got worse and so boring I decided if he didn’t go, I would! In fact, Richard my nephew, didn’t renew. As for this season, I see a transition taking place and I hope it comes good, but while it’s actually happening, I’m falling asleep. If it becomes ‘Meggoised’ I shall take stock and make a decision.

To become established in the Prem you need a solid base. We weren’t going to be able to score 2 or more goals every game like the majority of last season. Once the base is set then the rest will start to come. You don’t start building your house with the roof. Mowbray although entertaining was only succesful 1 out of 3 seasons, enjoyable but not succesful. Di Matteo was maybe to naive to see the failings. Give a manager time and results and flair will come. It took time at Fulham and if people decide not to turn up or renew a season ticket I’m sure others will take there place.

37 Kev,
I don’t want to get heavy with the psychology here, but I read a lot of stuff, and when I see some of the comments here this season,it really makes me smile.
Basically, the human mind loves to ‘compare’,and after a while,it gets used to something and takes it for granted.
If your neighbour has a car,and you don’t,you’re not very happy,so you buy a car, then notice he now has TWO,and you think
‘why should I only have one car when he’s got two’?
You don’t think about the fact that 90 per cent of the world’s population struggle to afford a pushbike, you’re just unhappy that you’ve only got one car.
The point I’m making is that back in the late 90′s we were dire, the only bit of quality we had in the squad was Kevin Kilbane, and he was sold behind the Manager’s back to clear some of the very bad debt we were in at the time.
We are currently a million miles better off than we were then, but it doesn’t stop some guys looking for faults and having a whinge (no one personal, just the collective posts I read each week).
There are clubs below us,this season and last, that have been in the top flight longer than us,and spent more money (inc. wolves),but are actually worse than us.
January is the month on the calendar that most people feel depressed, but some guys practice all year round.
Can we please do what me Mom always used to say, look on the bright side and ‘count our blessings’?
Adeu.

Hi Cyril
Thanks for the kind words, a scholar and a gentleman as always. Me and Laura have had to move our seats for tomorrows game again as Belle wants to come to the game. We are in the East Stand and a few of the lads (Russco and Manga) are sitting by us too. I think they have followed me due to them realising i need a few other singers near me!!
Might see you tomorrow Cyril and if i do ill give you Belles tip for first goalscorer (she certainly has a knack for getting it right, something she doesnt get from me). I asked her last night who she thought was going to be first goalscorer, after a bit of thought she said “lets wait until Saturday dad, ill tell you then”.
Its really weird watching her become a fully fledged baggie. I tried everything when she was younger to be interested in coming to the game to no avail. When i stopped trying she became Albion mad. Very good post and I can see where you’re coming from even though I disagree. Which is exactly as it should be on this site.
Because a system worked last season doesn’t necessarily mean it will work this season. Second season syndrome may or may not be a myth but one thing about this League is its professionalism. Clubs now have massive backroom staffs that study future opponents and players are equipped as never before with their opponents strengths and weaknesses. As in business you cannot stand still.
I’ve heard people on here say that they remember Albion as an exciting, attacking team in the 60′s.
I’ve heard people on here say that Fulham under Roy were a boring one dimensional team.
Anybody that remembers Albion in the 60′s will also remember that we were exciting we were attacking but we achieved it by hitting the front men predominantly Astle and Brown early. We didn’t play through teams in midfield we had an outstanding passer of the ball in Bobby Hope who would find our front two and our speedy wingers Clark and Foggo or Jackson etc early.
Almost exactly what Roy’s Fulham team did. For Astle Brown read Zamora Johnson for Clark read Duff for Hope read Murphy.
Memory can play tricks.

That rings a bell (no pun intended) with me. My Dad used to go every week and was always trying to get me to go and I wouldn’t, then when he’d decided to stop going I decided I wanted to go so he started again until I was old enough to go alone.
I feel sorry for Belle in that it’s possibly condemning her to many years of misery and frustration but then I ask myself would I swap my 50 years of misery and frustration with the Albion for being a non-football fan or worse still a Man Ure fan and the answer is NO. Enjoy it Belle, well perhaps enjoy is the wrong word but persevere, its character building.

What a good post. Can I add that your Kilbane example was repeated time and again in the 90′s Goodman, Palmer, Burrows etc. And those that remember the 70′s will also remember that we didn’t even have anybody worth selling for long periods.
And Cyril.
I hope your threats are borne out of frustration more than reality. This site and the ground wouldn’t be the same without the presence of people with your mature outlook and good humour.
I know the Liverpool game almost made me lose the will to live as well but we have the potential to get better. Think of all those ‘Liverpool’ type games we’ve attended against lesser opposition and there’s been nothing to make us believe it will get better, think Wolves as well if it helps. It’s football and hopefully a couple of decent performances will make that game seem like a bad dream.

I don’t think anybody could accuse you of being less of a fan. For a start any of us that spend our own time on here discussing the Albion this much obviously have it in our blood. Also, it’s obvious from some of the frustration in some of your posts how much you care. The board’s a better place for differing opinions.
What grates on me is posts like 47- if you’re going to have a pop at people, at least post under your own name and do so with some constructive observations towards individuals. By simply pigeon-holing people and making general accusations, you’re doing exactly the same as those you accuse, which makes you no better.
I’ve never accused a poster under an Albion name of being a Wolves fan (except once when I quickly learnt not to about 2 years ago), make a concerted effort to do otherwise and try and argue constructively with people when we disagree. Yet through being a ‘regular’ continually gain a reputation of ignorance in those sorts wishy-washy paint-throwing posts.

I’m not calling for Roy Hodgson’s head nor am I opposed to being a solid team; I’m concerned about our robotic style which has replaced the flowing movement of much of last season.
In my opinion the ‘boring’ nature of our play at the moment comes from our inability to move the ball quick enough from the back to the front. Hitting long balls through to PO, Long or Tchoyi doesn’t produce results – Long is best playing off someone else, PO and Tchoyi don’t hold the ball up well enough.
Brunt and Thomas seem utterly confused at the moment as to their role in the team; the right-wing is problematic depending on who is in the line-up and Thomas doesn’t take people on or go to the byline as often as he did.
Tomorrow I’d like to see Tchoyi up against Robinson.

55) Is it only me that’s bored with this whole Blatter business and believe it is getting blown way out of proportion? We all know the mans a fool, but has for the calls that we should leave FIFA over this is ridiculous, especially given that when were so obviously stitched up in our World Cup bid, I don’t recall so many calls from the media to leave FIFA over that, which was something actual worth leaving over, but then, there was not so much indignation to be gained from doing that.
The fact that we are the only country in Europe who’s media seem so, so, offended by this speaks volumes, is it that we are right as a nation and every single other FIFA member is wrong? highly unlikely, and how far up our own backside as a nation would we have to be to believe otherwise?
Writing this I am watching Al Jazeera, Blatter has made a public apology for his comments, will that be the end of it? not whilst some think they can make capital on it, guaranteed.

He was inside right (we used to hAVE 5 FORWARDS THEN) in the 1931 cup and promotion winning Albion side and was my hero during the early 30′s. As the poster who cried DINGLE lounder than most I understand totally how easy it is to wrongly label people with a differing viewpoint as a wolves fan so now I totally ignore the obvious idiots who post on here to get a reaction and try hard not to fall into that trap any longer.
I’ve posted on this forum for about 5 years and have seen fans like Terry driven away by the relentless drivel from our neighbours which is usually driven by envy at our regular superiority over the past years and also by our inability to get posts on here whilst others seem to have no such problems. I’ve also seen the threads decend into name calling and arguments over identities

Sepp Blatter has dropped an almighty blunder, and it shows the power he has in football if he can manage to wriggle out of it. The fact is his monopoly on the power in world football is not only damaging it is also wrong for what should and ISNT a meritocracy sport.
I hope we take this opportunity to help change what is wrong with FIFA.
Re what he said, it was a statement indicative of a man who sees himself as untouchable. Not only that but his remark was so far wide of the mark it is untrue.
Remember this, it doesnt take the majority of people to ensure unjustice continues, it only takes the good not to take action against it.

66) Hey, don’t apologies for disagreeing, that’s what these pages are for.
I do think you are getting me wrong though, was Blatter wrong to say what he did, yes, is he a long over due retirement, most certainly, but, there does seem to be an agenda in this country that when anything like this arises there is a vicarious moral indignation bordering on the hysterical, usually from the people who are not even affected by it.
No one is saying racism is right, its not, but it does, has, and always will happen. I truly believe if you put identical humans in a room, and told half to go to the left, and half to go to the right, they would end up arguing over which side was the best, left or right, that’s human nature. Do you truly believe of all the hundreds (if not thousands) of professional black players that there have been, not one has ever made a derogatory remark about someone who is not black? that would make them perfect wouldn’t it? and humans just aren’t like that, and yet, and feel free to correct me, I can not recall one reported incident in the press of the situation ever arising, strange?
What I object to is the way when colour is involved it is perceived to be far worse than other type of abuse, age, sexuality, ginger, fat, ugly, stupid, the list is endless, yet if someone calls a player a “useless carrot top” (or words to that affect!) no one would dream of expecting him to resign, would they?
Charlie Williams, one of the country’s first black players, and, very funny Yorkshire comedian, who actually played professional football for Doncaster summed it up best whilst addressing a white audience when he said
“You know the only difference between me and thee? I can take the mick out of thee flower, and get away with it”
So true.

71) Good points, but in reality Blatter is untouchable, its sad but it is true. I am not saying what he said is right, or even agreeing with him, but has with any Don the only way he will go is when he chooses too or dies.
The point I am trying to make is that the media, and a few high profile celebs, only feel the need to voice such concerns when it is a colour thing, why? are other abuses of power just not as worthy of highlighting?
Has previously stated, last years World Cup bid was such a stitch up, one that the Mafia would have been proud of, yet there was not this much hysteria from the U.K. press as there has been over this matter.
I take your point about for evil to triumph good men only need do nothing, but, perhaps if people (especially the media) had stood up more over the years when FIFA have abused there position on other matters, Blatter would not have been in charge and able to make the statement he did the other day.

I think I can understand what you mean. I have a lot of black (call it Afro/Carribean if you will but they generally refer to themselves as black) and Asian friends.
But I also agree with your point that some people in the media want to gain a few medals by being very publicly anti-racist. It’s a bit like the people that go over the top about Remembrance Day IE I’m more patriotic than you.
When racist crime figures are compiled anyone not white is classified as black whereas we live in a very multi cultural mixed race country now so how does that work? The people you are talking about tended to shout loudest when it was white South Africans practicing apartheid against non-white South Africans but rarely shout as loud about Mugabe slaughtering other black Zimbaweans. For some reason they find the ethics involved more confusing.
I deplore racism or any other form of bullying because that’s what it is. But I try to be unbiased about it.
But if this gets Blatter out I’m all for it.

I was out earlier, but I just wanna say that the only people I look down on are some of the dumb dingles,(like this ‘shirley clacka away fan’)that come on here.
I did get a grammar school education, but I grew up in an old council house, with seven of us sharing two bedrooms, and I dropped out of school when I was 15,without taking any exams.
I’ve always been proud of me roots, and we grew up to respect and help our family and neighbours,I don’t like snobbery or the way some kids teased and bullied the less fortunate at school.
My main line on here is that if you try to be positive, and enjoy the good stuff,it makes you feel good, but if people dwell on the down side, you feel bad,and I don’t like feelin’ bad.
I also don’t like seeing other Albion fans feeling miserable,so I just ask if they’ll focus on what makes ‘em happy and excited instead-

I absolutely agree with you in terms of race being a more protected characteristic than age, sex, weight, hair colour etc and in that sense we in this country (and across parts of the world in general) give a disproportionate amount of attention to that compared to the others.
However, it’s also Sepp Blatter’s job to understand his audience, his representation of a world game as a whole and not to cloud that with whatever his own opinions are. I don’t doubt he might not be racist at all, possibly far less than many of those who have criticised him. But he’s made an almighty error of judgement and in many respects doesn’t seem to be doing his job properly with his conveyor belt of bizarre comments when he theoretically represents an organisation.
That said, we do have a sensationalist media and a witch-hunt culture in this country where we demand accountability for everything, sometimes irrationally so I dare say we should be careful of trying to dictate to the rest of the world who’s right and who should/shouldn’t be in charge.

I understand the point you are trying to make, but we cannot compare racism with name calling. Calling someone a name re the colour of their hair compared to calling someone a name re the colour of their skin is different due to the ethnicity of their cultural back ground.Ginger haired people, people who are over weight, etc, etc, are not a cultural collection of people.
I suppose what i am trying to say is he knew what he was trying to say, he was trying to say it is part and parcel of football and it shouldnt be blown out of proportion. But if we do not punish those offenders we give them free reign, and then what? We allow fans to throw bananas again like we have seen in the past?
