West Brom’s Gareth McAuley relishing duel with Arsenal’s Robin van Persie

West Brom defender Gareth McAuley today insisted he is relishing the challenge of facing the Premier League’s hottest striker.

In-form Dutchman Robin van Persie netted a hat-trick against Chelsea at the weekend to take his season’s tally to 10 goals and cement his reputation as the country’s most in-form forward.

But Northern Ireland captain McAuley believes the Holland international’s hot streak would make it even more satisfying if the Baggies could keep him quiet when they visit Arsenal on Saturday.

McAuley said: “It’s a big challenge. He’s in form, as we saw at the weekend against Chelsea. He’s averaging more than a goal a game so that is something to challenge yourself with.

“If we can get a shut-out, it’s a good one to have. They’re not a one-man team but van Persie will take a bit of extra looking after, with the form he’s in.”
