Nicky Shorey pledges to fight back for a first-team recall at West Brom

Axed West Brom defender Nicky Shorey today pledged to fight back from his first-team exile and insisted he will take his chance when he earns a senior recall.

The experienced former England international admitted he was hurt at losing his place to makeshift left-back Billy Jones, who has been preferred for the last three matches.

But Shorey, who played for the reserves in their 4-0 win against Chelsea last night, admitted his own mistakes had encouraged boss Roy Hodgson to leave him out.

He said: “Whether I thought it was the right decision or not, it’s got a couple of good results and hopefully I will get another chance. Billy has been working hard in training and deserved a chance.

“It’s always disappointing for me when I see a right-footed player in my position at left-back. It doesn’t sit well with me but he’s done well.”
