Will the real West Brom stand up?
Monday 31st October 2011, 3:45PM GMT.
West Brom blogger Jarrod Hill doesn’t know which side of the Baggies will turn up at Arsenal on Saturday after a sub-standard display against Liverpool.
Talk about after the Lord Mayor’s show? With Wolves and Aston Villa dispatched in recent weeks, I viewed Saturday’s game against Liverpool as another chance to add to our points tally.
As good as we were against our local rivals, we were equally as bad against our visitors.
I had no problems with boss Roy Hodgson’s team selection, but the boys never clicked into gear for the whole ninety minutes, the team simply let him and us down.
With the exception of Gareth McAuley, Ben Foster and Jonas Olsson, I thought the lads looked lethargic. We lacked desire, invention and a will to win.
The dodgy penalty came early and may have had an effect on our game-plan, but nobody could argue that Liverpool deserved the three points.
What confused me about the penalty was the fact the referee allowed the linesman to make the decision.
Lee Mason had a perfect view of the incident and made the decision that it was not a penalty, but then allowed Gary Beswick to make the decision that it was a penalty, from arguably a worse viewing angle.
For me, I think it was a coming together of two players tussling for the ball and the question you have to ask yourself is, if Jerome Thomas had have gone to ground before Luis Suarez, would they have given a penalty?
But the controversy surrounding the penalty decision only serves to deflect from a very poor team performance.
Liverpool could have had more than the two goals they scored while Hodgson’s team looked toothless going forward.
Our midfield was bypassed too often with long balls up to Peter Odemwingie and Somen Tchoyi and neither could make the ball stick.
Possibly the quietest game I have seen from either striker, but the service to them was non-existent.
The midfield four failed to get to grips with a hard working Liverpool team and our usual fluid pass and move never got going.
I can only assume the lads were worried about missing X Factor and played so poorly, due to their wish to be substituted early.
Hodgson looked annoyed at the performance and I wouldn’t bet against a few changes being made when we play Arsenal on Saturday at the Emirates Stadium.
I watched the Chelsea versus Arsenal game earlier in the day and it gave me a greater fear than anything I have seen over the Halloween weekend.
Arsenal played superbly well and the game was one of the best games I have seen in years.
If we play as badly as we did against Liverpool and they play as well as they did against Chelsea, they may have to ask Lords for the use of their scoreboard!
It’s a game that I would definitely see as an opportunity to revert back to a 4-5-1 formation, as it worked very well in both games against them last season.
As disappointing as Saturday was, we should not get too carried away, I may well come over as the harbinger of doom but I still view our squad as a work in progress, so a loss against Liverpool is never a great surprise.
The players will definitely need to improve on Saturday’s performance, but in Hodgson I feel we have a manager who will work as hard as he can to build a team capable of remaining in the Premier League. We need to put the Liverpool game behind us and move on to preparing for one of our most difficult games of the season.

WBA BOMBER
You head this piece ‘will the real West Brom stand up ?’ and if i am being honest and looking at the first ten games , rarely this season if at all have we really played well and certainly not matched any of the outstanding performances of last season. To many players off form , Mulumbu and Odemwingie have been pale imitations of last season. 4-4-2 simply does not work , yes we beat Wolves and Villa doing it , but put your hand on your heart and tell me either of those are anywhere above below average. We need to get back to 4-5-1 and find the verve of last seasons run in and quick.

We haven’t played well all season, and the two recent wins (over poor opposition) are just papering over the cracks. This is a result of Hodgson’s pragmatic approach – rather a win and play badly/effectively than a loss and play well.
Damage limitation is the order of the day on Saturday.

Reality check here Jarrod,I cant agree that this was another game to get some points.Lets take the facts and that is we took the field with a team that cost in the region of 8 million and a defence with 3 players who cost nothing and they played against a strike force that cost 58 million.God knows how much their whole team cost but they were superior in every department and worked hard as a team which totally snubbed us out and we reverted to the long ball on many occassions.Lets not be too critical about saturday because if any of the top 5 teams play well we aint going to compete against that sort of talent. If Arsenal are on form we will get beat and I will state the obvious and that is our next big game is Bolton at home where the points must be taken.

Totaly agree should have made changes earlier
JT is not same player this season we missed
Long badly neither striker could hold ball
to bring others into game. Arsenal next they
look to have returned to form so neutrals will
feel were lambs to the slaughter but our best chance is Peter up front alone he could do well against their suspect defence.
Regarding Liverpool our defence must be doing
something right ie soft penalty and all up field for Carrol’s goal £35ML man’s best game
so far let’s face reality not a lot more could buy our club!!!

We may have been poor but Liverpool were equally as good. The game earlier in the day that arsenal played they looked good going forward but equally they looked inept at the back. we will not play a high line like Chelsea did so Arsenal may not find it as easy to get behind our defence. Also, when we get the ball in attacking areas arsenal have not got the same defensive unit that Liverpool so expertly played. I expect to lose still v Arsenal but look a better team.
Right on the button Jarrod! Pathetic decision making on several occasions. Simple question:
Would we have got that penalty if the situation had been reversed? That will never excuse the ‘dance routine’ performance from our lot. The 60-40 possession must have been 80-20 up until the 70 minute. I don’t usually indulge in shouting or comments these days, but the East Stand heard a few on Saturday. Then I lost interest completely. Other things were weighing down my mind instead and I’d hoped the match would provide a good diversion. How wrong can one be?
As usual, agree with much you have written.
I feel that changes need to be made during the game and can’t understand why we didn’t revert very quickly to five in midfield as Liverpool had free rein/reign. We also sat back almost afraid to go and close their players down. They closed us down quickly all game and gave us little time or room to play. Odemwingie was pretty anonymous and i was amazed that RH took Tchoyi off as he was clearly more lively in the second half.
Maybe things would be different if Roy had his own team in place to advise him, rather than the one he has inherited and had to work with??Maybe the team will be UP for the Arsenal game but if we sit back then like you I fear for what the final score will be.
Peace and love.

When you have a carthorse playing against you who cost more than your team, you have to be realistic. We were appalling. But that was not down to Liverpool. Albion were sloppy and not at the races, not at all like the team who beat Villa and the tatters. With Long, we might have scraped a draw. Without him, no chance.
Too many senior players simply did not turn up. Olsson and Foster were our best players, which tells its own story. Odemwingie, Brunt and Thomas had shockers. Tchoyi was all bluster and hot air as always. So the result was more or less assured even without Liverpool being the opponents.
As regards the penalty, well it was one of those which could have been waved on,the ref having ignored it. I think he was glad the lnesman flagged because he hadn’t the guts to give it himself.
But as far as I’m concerned, Suarez IS a diver. He didn’t have to go down, but it was another one of his ‘oh, there’s a leg, thanks, I’ll go down’ moves. He goes down far too easily, but more fool Thomas for giving him the chance, after all the talk about it before the match.
Bomber – I agree with you regarding our inept display must not be ignored just because the officials had a shocking day – not just the pen decision. I do agree that this was a game that we could have got something from – bar Suarez, (and it pains me to say it because the man is just vile, his movement was possibly up there with the best I’ve seen at The Hawthorns. He was pure class coming deep, going wide and running the line) – were Liverpool really that good – not for me. Adam and Lucas were never troubled like their back 4 and keeper.
I have to agree with the first couple of posts that I don’t think we’ve actually played that well this season since the opening two games.
I made comment last week that the 6 points picked up off Wolves and Villa were with ok performances but we were up against extremely poor opposition. I also am in the minority but I don’t think Tchoyi has been anywhere near as good as most on here believe he has. He does cause problems for sure but with no consistency and his end product has been lacking so far this season. His inability to hold up a ball or win anything in the air worries me if he is to be a front man. From what I’ve seen over the past 15 months I don’t think he’s good enough to lead the line and would be an impact player off the bench at best for me.
How Thomas was given Man of the Match I’ll never know – again absolutely no end product – although I agree Gera must not be rushed back I do hope he starts getting pitch time soon as I believe we have to replace JT.
I don’t agree with Streetly (No.3) that we should not believe we are capable of getting points – we got 3 from them last season in that fixture and I believe they only have a couple of world class players – Gerrard, Suarez and maybe Reina. However I do agree that the Bolton game is huge – we must take 3 points.
Focus on Arsenal first though – we must go put in a much improved display. Arsenal aren’t world beaters by any means – at the back they are simply woeful. We proved we can go to these places and get points – no reason why not on Sat – we have to improve ourselves for that to be possible though.

Worrow Bomber,
If the penalty decision confused you how much more so the players?. As the referee was much closer than his assistant, surely he should have stuck with his own decision. Doesn’t that tell us from that moment we had the law against us. Well in that instance two out of three were, then it got worse. Granted it took something away from our players, try trust in those officials. No wonder our play faded. Quarter of the season gone (Approx’), eleven points in the bag. According to quite a few fans on here stating we haven’t played well all season. I can only say to them, wait till we hit form. I didn’t expect too much from Liverpool or Arsenal, just as I didn’t against Chelsea and Manchester United. Looking forward to the seasons halfway mark, one week at a time.

Listen!! Get over it!! It was a definite penalty!! Thomas tried to cut out Suarez’s path to the ball and in doing so tripped him up – simple! Lee Mason simply chickened out of the decision, while the linesman had the better view – not the worse view and IMMEDIATELY raised his flag!! Nailed on penalty. By the way Suarez is is one of the top 3 most fouled players in the Premiership but interestingly after the Man Utd game, in which Fergie claimed Suarez was a diver, then when we faced Norwich at home, Suarez was “fouled” ten times during the game and was not given one decision. Which shows the power of Fergie and what a hold he has on our officials. Anyway, there is a definite conspiracy afoot to besmirch Suarez as a diver. Obviously, because most opposition teams are terrified of him and have to find some way to keep him in check!! What better way than to call him a diver so that “yard-dog” defenders can kick him to bits and get away with it.

At last,somebody-well said!!
I said on here Friday that I hoped the ‘doom & gloomers’ don’t return if things go against us at the weekend, because we WILL have good and bad times this season, but we don’t want to follow the wolves fans example, and change direction like the wind, week in week out.
Ok,we didn’t play well against the ‘pool, but can we have some perspective here?
There’s an old saying that you can only play as well as the opposition allow you to,and as much as I dislike Liverpool, let’s look at the main points here-
1) Liverpool have been 5 times European Champions, whilst we were playing Championship football a season and a bit ago.
2) We have a very limited budget, with our record signing being Shane Long, possibly eventually costing us 6 mil.-
Liverpool have Carroll 35 mil.,Suarez 24 mil.,Downing 20 mil.,Henderson 16 mil.,etc., etc.,etc.
and 3) They’ve hit a good run of form recently, and have now moved into the top six-
there were times in the game that they reminded me of Chelsea here last season, the Albion players often looked as if they just couldn’t match the opposition, whatever they did.
The trouble is that we ‘over-achieved’ last season,no one expected us to finish 11th on our return to the top-flight.
And because we beat the ‘pool once (with 2 pens.),many feel we should now do it all the time.
Before this weekend,we’d only lost one of our previous six league games, and as it currently stands, one more win could put us 8th in the table.
Three of our five defeats have been against Man.U.,Chelsea and Liverpool.
So what’s happened to last week’s dancin’ in the street?
Patience please!!

I think Streetly (3) as summed it up best. Worry for me, we just seem to be playing Arsenal has they hit their stride (early this season they also lost Liverpool 2-0, got beat by Blackburn and destroyed 8-2 by Man U don’t forget) but they looked the dogs Saturday, and Van Persie has now played 28 games this year, and scored 27 times!
Its certainly a concern!

Oh dear, its a long time since we crossed swords but here goes. I do not see anyone on here calling for Hodgsons head just stating their views , we are not Wulfies .
Liverpool maybe 5 times Euro Champs but it was not the current side who did it , nor will they with dross like Carroll, Downing and Henderson. I fancied us to get a result but we did not turn up , not for the first time this season , remember Swansea away ???.For me and this is only my opinion , overall i do not think we have been very good. Perhaps it will be good enough as the standard in this league is nowhere near where Sky thinks it is, but if we could find the form and formation of the run in last season , the SKY’s the limit , sorry for the pun.

18 Max,
I’m a bit confused, because I can’t remember saying anywhere here that the fans want to kick RH out,I just said that the wolves fans can be very fickle, and praise the team one week, then slam them the next, saying how good someone is,then a few days later they are rubbish.
As for Liverpool,it’s the fact that they have this past reputation of being a ‘top’ club’ that attracts players of a certain qualty, and because we’re not fully ‘established’ yet,we have to scratch around Europe to find the best we can.
We may not be playing brilliantly at present, but last season wasn’t always that brilliant, which is why, after twenty-odd games,we were one place off relegation.
What I said is that we need to look at the whole picture, and if RH retires at the end of this season with us still in the prem.,and our best players still under contract, everyone will be happy again.
So I guess we all have our opinions, and we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one.
At least it keeps the debate lively……..,,

Put out the` streamers I agree with your first post but then normal service is resumed. Although Carroll, Henderson and Downing cost vastly inflated fees they are all three very good players and to call them dross is ridiculous.
I agree that the Liverpool team don’t really live up to being the sum of their parts. The poor display by the officials has created a smokescreen over how poor we were but the fact we were poor doesn’t make their pitiful performance any more acceptable either. I can only thank God that it wasn’t one of the Manchester clubs or the way we played on Saturday it may have been the first football match stopped to prevent unnecessary punishment.
I don’t pick on individuals but I think on his current form JT should not have been in the side on Saturday, he looks a shadow of the player he was last season. Cox deserves a chance for his energy and willingness to run the extra mile as well as the goal threat he offers. I’d go for PO on his own with Brunt, Dorrans, Mulumbu, Morrison and Cox injuries allowing.
I agree with you and the doom merchants that we have still to look fluent this season but more so with Rocket and Jack that it’s very early days. The Liverpool game reminded me of the Forest game a couple of seasons back. Lets hope we get the same response from the players and Manager who have every right to hang their heads after such an inept display.

Cantello, I usually find my head nodding in agreement with you and somewhat critical of Max’s postings. Not today though. Quite the opposite. Liverpool had 10 men behind the ball each time we managed to get possession. Why? Too slow and clumsy build-up. Only when we had made changes did we show any sort of battle and by then it was too late. We were outclassed, yes, but we were also total rubbish on the day, thus not so much a boost for Liverpool. I made reference to ‘dance routine’ formation by the team. In my opinion they were far too busy ‘taking up position’ than getting close to the opposition players. No wonder Liverpool looked good! FLAIR is what we did not show either. I will stay with my verdict. BORING !

You seem to be policing the bloggers for their opinions if they differ from week to week?
Surely when the team or player plays well one week and then poorly the following week we should comment?
That doestn make people fickle it makes them objective surely?
Also to those saying that we cannot or shouldnt view a home game against this current Liverpool as an opportunity to get points, i ask why not?
Dont tell me its the money they have spent because if thats the case we may as well give up now. Even after watching the game i didnt think Liverpool looked that good.
Dont get me wrong, i too get frustrated by the fans who go from one extreme to the other.
However to simply say that its “Liverpool
they have spent loads of money” and lets forget we played very poorly and move on isnt what a football forum is for.

I think, basically, we’ve got the skill and personel to successfully use 4-4-2 against the lesser teams in the Premier League (as proven against both Wolves and Villa). But against the better teams? It’s got to be 4-5-1, like last season.
Liverpool showed that with decent players we were very easy to play against set up in a rigid 4-4-2.

Well, I was as worried as anybody at the begining of the season when we lost to Swansea. And I suppose we do need one confidence boosting victory over one of the ‘big’ clubs to put the wind in our sales but I’m not sure a defeat to an in form Liverpool team is a good enough reason to soil myself just yet.
I also don’t beleive that Arsenal away is a fixture we can possibly be ear-marking for taking points from. Granted, if we were playing them when Blackburn played them then we may have been forgiven for being quietly confident. But we are playing the most in form side with the most inform striker in the Prem on the weekend, so I’m not counting my chickens just yet boys.
After this weekend we will only have Man City to play from the ‘big’ teams. We’ve earn’t some decent results from teams around us so we, as fans need to have our teams back and get them back to winning ways. It’s no coincidence that we had our best spells when the fans decided to drive the team on. Lets see if we can sing our way to victory against Bolton.

I did say recently that it’s an emotional game, and everyone can express their opinion on what they see,but my comments are more born from frustration.
I said what I said in response to Streetly Baggie’s post, and finished by asking for patience.
I could see clearly that we were below par,but despite some ‘pool players being overvalued and overrated, they still have quality in their squad, and are currently on a good run,so I sensed before the game that it could be tough for us.
I just felt that everyone was on a high until saturday afternoon, but long before the end of the game, people were streaming out muttering and groaning.
At least the biggest smile of the night came on my face when the Brummie sang ‘the Lord’s My Shepherd’ near the end.
I just feel the negative vibes won’t help, but just end up being destructive.
All I’ve done is have my say,and people can agree or disagree,I guess this is the place to at least make our feelings known.
C’est la vie.

I absolutely agree with what you both say in that we can’t always hide behind £ signs and the suggestion that we’re still not really clicking as we’d all have liked.
However in CR78′s defence, I do think he has a point about fans’ sentiments swinging in the extreme.
I don’t think we played particularly well against Wolves, we were just up against a very beatable team. I also think back to Villa at home last year, I personally thought we were as bad in the 1st half that day as we were at Wolves a fortnight later, but the results were very different and hence we were supposedly brilliant in one and desperately bad in the other.
I think sometimes the difference in application and performance is fairly small, far smaller than we probably perceive and these games are dictated by very small margins e.g. you lose the early pen and the other side gets a bit of momentum and presses you a bit, you give the ball away a couple of times etc etc.

36 Warren,
I’ve been out and about today, occasionally checking things on the mobile, and unable to focus on the discussion, but thanks for picking up on the main point I was trying to make.
Thing is,if the Liverpool game had been called off Saturday morning, most fans would still be happily on a ‘high’,with thoughts of the great ‘double derby’ wins still in mind, but instead, after 90 minutes of football,it’s back to doom and gloom,RH has got it wrong, the system needs changing, there’s no passion,he’s rubbish,so is he,etc.,etc.
And some seem to already be having sleepless nights about how Arsenal might crush us.
Mid-way through the second half on Saturday,I was watching the game, hoping for the ball to suddenly fly in the Liverpool net,and really lift the place, when I noticed the stream of people leaving from around me looking,as they say,as ‘miserable as sin’.
It then went through my mind that a few years ago we would have given anything to be watching premiership football at the Hawthorns.
When you started watching in the late 80′s,and in the miserable debt-ridden late 90′s,we seemed a million miles away from playing in the same division as Liverpool, and now that it was actually happening,as I sat there Saturday, people were walking away from the game with a quarter of it still to play.
The Albion performance wasn’t good, but I thought of who my favourite sky presenters support-Jeff Stelling (Hartlepool),and Soccer A.M.’s Helen & Max (Torquay and Cambridge),and thought how much they’d love the chance to experience this sort of occasion with their clubs.
So I still feel disappointment when we lose,or play badly, but I try to keep a balanced view, and enjoy the current ride.
Believe me,it’s a hell of a lot better than being in Bath, with people crying around me,as we sink into the old ‘third division’………..

Never too early for a pint mate. As for Bully being a spokesman for me, NOT in my lifetime or the next.

No surprise that I agree with your posts but these two in particular are two of the best on here for many a year. I think that if we came second in the Prem some of our ‘fans’ would still complain that if only JP had spent a ‘bit’ more or RH had played a different line-up we could have won the title.
Sometimes it makes you think that in the same way that some people have not moved all that far up the evolutionary scale from chimpanzees, so some of our own fans haven’t evolved as far from our cousins down the road as we think.
PS. I’m still not sure about Lonely, despite all the signs that he is Baggie through and through I still wonder if he might just be an Agent Provocoteur (nothing to do with his underwear, he only wears that when he’s being Chewbecca.)

Once again I find myself wholeheartedly agreeing with you. Obviously not the first half but definitely the second. Although I slightly defer from your judgement. Yes we should all ignore him but will this make him go away. I doubt it as he obviously fancies himself to be a wit of some repute and these types rarely take the hint.

49 Max-
so after your season ticket expires in this life, you’re planning to come back and have another shot?
OK then,if you go before me,I’ll get someone to put your chainsaw in deep freeze.
Fair enough?

Max and Bully-
this ‘shirkey/clacka/TC’ or whoever, may see himself as being funny, but I honestly believe it’s delusional, and much more serious than that.
I confronted him within minutes of him appearing as ‘shirley’,and completely exposed who he really is last week, but he obviously blanks it out.
Tell me honestly-what would you say about someone who visits a rival club’s site to put on intimidating posts, several times a day, week after week, month after month?
All I know is that it’s not normal practice, and feels quite disturbing.
I really think he may need some professional help.

Cheers for that mate, she’s not a steak fan and I took her to the Miller and Carter in Sutton last week so will probably have to try one of the others before I end up in trouble!! I just fancied the Black Country specials menu at the Greyhound, bellydraft and black pudding……

As ever, I agree with your perspective on things. Sadly, I think your reference to Bath will be lost on many of today’s ‘supporters’.

I hear what your saying re: that day in Bath but am I still the only one that has nightmares and flashbacks from it? Wouldn’t wish that on anyone!!
