West Brom striker Shane Long shock inclusion in Republic of Ireland squad
Friday 28th October 2011, 10:35AM BST.
Injured West Brom striker Shane Long was a shock inclusion today in the Republic of Ireland squad for their Euro 2012 play-off against Estonia.
The Baggies forward has been ruled out for up to six weeks after chipping a bone in his right knee in a clash with Villa defender Alan Hutton on Saturday.
But Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni today named the 24-year-old in his squad for the two-leg play-off against Estonia – the first leg of which is just a fortnight away.
The Irish travel to Talinn for the first half of the play-off on November 11 before the return in Dublin on November 15.
Long’s inclusion came as a major surprise, with West Brom sources today reiterating that their summer signing is highly unlikely to be fit to represent his country.
