Momentum is the key for West Brom

West Brom blogger Jarrod Hill believes the only way to keep the Baggies bandwagon rolling on will be with results as Roy Hodgson’s men try to build on some sterling form.

Two draws followed by two wins over our local rivals has had West fans everywhere smiling with glee.

Bragging rights over your friends, colleagues and, sometimes, family has been secured for the near future and the eight-point haul has moved us up the Premier League table.

I have had to eat humble pie in the last few weeks, after I raised major concerns over our change to a 4-4-2 formation that stuttered before coming to life in the last two games.

I still think the re-introduction of Somen Tchoyi has helped the new formation work, but I am ready to admit I may have been a little hasty in my rejection of boss Roy Hodgson’s preferred set up.

And I still see 4-5-1 as a formation for certain games against certain opposition but, up until the Wolves game, I could not see the two up front working. Maybe that was more down to the strikers than the formation itself?

Shane Long has played well and will be greatly missed during his absence through injury, but the truth is his partnership with Peter Odemwingie didn’t look like it would work.

Tchoyi has proven to be the link to making two up front work for us. His style of play is often talked about as being unpredictable, but his directness causes opposing defences no end of concern.

What we also overlook is his positional play and his work rate. I watched the Wolves game again this week, along with the Villa game, and his ability to drag defenders out of position is excellent.

Tchoyi has the ability to tie defenders in knots or find a team-mate who he has just created space for.

OK, he has the infuriating ability to choose the wrong option or run the ball out or try and take on the whole opposition single-handed but, without him, we have lacked the fluidity he brings.

Football teams are all about partnerships, the front two, the full back and his winger, or the centre backs.

Good partnerships make a world of difference to a team and, for me, Long and Odemwingie do not look to be a natural fit.

That doesn’t mean they won’t in the future, as both players certainly have the intelligence and talent to evolve. But while that slowly takes shape, I see Tchoyi as a natural partner for either of them.

Hodgson also has Simon Cox to call upon and, again, he has different attributes to the other three strikers. His ability to pick a pass is good and he is probably the best striker of a ball out of all of the strikers we have.

Cox can count himself unlucky to not have had more opportunities this season, after finishing last season in good form and carrying that form on for the Republic of Ireland.

This weekend’s game against Liverpool arguably represents our toughest game in the last five fixtures and, although we must give them the respect they deserve, we should no longer be overawed by the big boys.

Manchester United and Chelsea both managed to smuggle all three points away from us this season but, on another day, we could easily have gained something from both.

Liverpool have considerably strengthened their squad under Kenny Dalglish and are starting to look more like the force they once were.

But, with our tails up from recent wins, home advantage, and the fact we beat them last season I hope we will again give them a hell of a game.

The longer we can keep our mini-unbeaten run going the better. The Premier League moves so quickly and four results can make a huge difference to any club.

We know that having taken eight points from four and Wolves have seen how it can be from the other side, having taken just one point from their last six games.

Confidence can be a fragile thing and it needs to be closely guarded, it’s easy to lose but takes time to build, a bit like Jenga.

Another positive result against Liverpool on Saturday and the bandwagon can keep rolling on. We will need all the positivity, luck, and support we can muster with Liverpool and Arsenal our next two fixtures.

Two fixtures, incidentally, we won last season, but a repeat of both of those results would be too much to ask for, surely?

    Hi Jarrod,

it’s interesting that you mention ‘results’ and ‘confidence’,because they have a very large impact on both players AND fans.

After losing the first 3 games, the Albion players were looking lost and nervous, whilst some of the guys on here seemed to be in a panic, like Fraser in Dad’s Army shouting ‘we’re all dooooomed!!’.

Now we’ve hit a spell of good results, everyone seems much more relaxed and confident.

Thing is,it’s a long season, and we can expect both good and bad stuff happening,so I hope that the ‘headless chickens’ don’t re-emerge if things go against us in the next couple of games.

It’s an emotional sport,so it’s natural to feel down if we get a bad result, but there’s plenty of ability in the Baggies squad,so regardless of what happens tomorrow, three points or none, let’s ‘keep our pecker up’.

    C’MON YOU BAGGIES !!

Jarrod – I’m also pretty close to holding my hands up with regards to the 442 / 451 debate. I’m not quite there – after the high standards set last season, we still aren’t playing well for long enough periods – but I’m close. Saturday is the true test because, although winning local derbies is fantastic, both Wolves and Villa are poor.

The jury is still out as to whether Long and Odemwingie are too similar. They certainly need time which we’ve cruelly been denied thanks to that thug Hutton. Tchoyi’s introduction could also be the answer. But I also think Long has stepped things up in the last few games. Against Norwich, Swansea and Fulham, his touch and link up play was poor. Play broke down every time he was involved. Since then he has been fantastic and, low and behold, our performances have improved.

Can’t wait for another test at the weekend…

We were going through bad times last season up until RDM got the boot but I very rarely heard all the booing that you would expect to hear in those circumstances, eg: Wolves.
I think or I hope that us albion fans are realistic in what our goals actually are?

Personally I will be happy if we finish above 16th position and still merit it as an improvement, that purely down to us staying in the division which is one of the main reasons.

I don’t see why we can’t go out tomorrow and go for a win? we more than matched them last time and even before that great win over them we let them win with a stupid goal. It just goes to show how far we have come as years ago I was always worried to face Liverpool as they would rip us apart. Not anymore though!

    Bomber,
Sweet blog and I’d like to see our old M-plan, with Tchoyi doing a Ronnie Allen with Odemwingie and Long either side of him. Our fruit tree is now loaded down with so much choice. Another six games and we will have a good idea where we are heading. Lets not forget a quarter of the season is now behind us, also we are up with the clock. Thanks to our powers that be. Roy is right, I’ve watched that vicious assault frame by frame, Long could have easily ended up like Buust, the lad from Coventry. On the point of contact Long had his feet apart, how he evaded it I’ll never know. He is young and strong, he will return. Hope the lads do it for Roy, just as Katherine states.

    3. BERGERAC. Dont believe you are Albion. Horrible Start to the season, Man U, Stoke at home and your unhappy?? Dont think a real fan saw points for first 3 games. We are doing well, good squad, getting tactics right. Leave us alone. The future bright…watch us go against Liverpool.

    Hi Jarrod.
Good point about confidence. It’s getting the balance between confidence and complacency isn’t it. It’s always been a problem at the Albion and is why we’ve always been known as a cup team since the 50′s with the exception of the Gary Megson years and to a lesser extent Johnny Giles. When good we’ve been a cavalier club that have rarely been good at grinding out results but can pull off big results.

I think it’s good we’re playing a supposed big club tomorrow as it means our players will be up for it.

    10 Bomber,

sorry to disturb your blog with confronting this idiot, but when I read other posts,it looks like some trusting Albion fans, who take people at face value, think that he’s genuine, and it kinda annoys me.

As for pushing a wheel around in the cage,I used to do it with my own pet.

But eventually I got fed up,and decided to leave the Rat Race………..

Only occasionally is one allowed a smug smile in football, but although I feel somewhat ashamed, Hutton banging his nut on his own player last week made me a little happier. The biter bit!
