Chris Brunt and Peter Odemwingie to stay on West Brom penalty duty

Roy Hodgson today backed Chris Brunt and Peter Odemwingie to keep Albion’s penalty duties as he geared up for Saturday’s clash with Liverpool.

Brunt, who netted twice from the spot in last season’s win against the Reds, looks set to remain the Baggies’ penalty taker this weekend despite screwing a spot-kick horribly wide at Villa on Saturday.

And Hodgson has also backed Odemwingie, who had a tame penalty saved in the win at Norwich, to convert if he is needed to take another.

“We have had a bad penalty season,” admitted Hodgson. “Chris Brunt scored one at Everton (in the Carling Cup) but the other two we’ve had have been missed so it’s not a good record.”

Brunty`s pen against Villa was probably only usurped in the worst penalty ever, by PO`s against Man ure.

In fairness to brunt`y though, his second penalty against Liverpool last term was a stunner, two keepers still wouldn`t have stopped that.

Did Shane Long not take them for Reading?

If not, what’s Igor up to these days…..?

It’s a real pity that Shane Long is injured, because as I’ve said before,I’ve watched some of the penalties he took at Reading on Youtube, and the ones I saw were world class.
He casually walks up to the ball, looks to see where the ‘keeper is moving, then hammers it into the opposite corner.

The problem is that Brunty and Peter O. have been at the club longer,so they probably pull rank, and Shane looks to be a quiet guy who won’t push himself forward.

Hopefully he’ll get his chance sometime in the future.

(p.s.- I watched the last pre-season friendly against Parma, and Brunty also badly missed a penalty then-c’mon Shane, hurry up and get fit!).

“Well, it gives the two lads a bit of shooting practice under pressure. It’s not as if we are hard up for a few goals, is it. We know they can bang them in when the play is open.

Statistics from the 40s and 50s used to claim that 1 in every 3 penalties were missed and 1 in every 39 corners produced a goal. Brunt’s miss last Saturday was a misfired rocket. On target, a goal, no stopping it at that speed and force. Our old hero Bomber Brown used to lamp ‘em at 90 mph, usually not far off ‘down the middle’ and rarely ever missed. Now did we not score two fine goals from about 8 corners? I’d like to see up to date stats on penalties and corner goals.

Tried to put this in the Roy to give Tchoy a chance story, but it said it was closed so if its no to cheeky !!!

I’m always pleased to see Tchoy given a chance as he’s unpredictable which frustrates the opposition no end. I hope Cox gets a chance to play a little more in the near future also.

The presure that lies heavily on the shoulders of any penalty taker, is that if he misses it, then Tens of Thousands of watching fans of the club he plays for will be gutted.

So any presure on the chosen penalty taker at the Albion must surly be minimal.

    We only need one half!

I was sat in row G directly behind the goal in the BRE before the Stoke game, during the warm up Long, who was a good few yards out, hit one over the cross bar it landed in row G about 6 seats to my left, and broke the seat! split it clean in half, fortunately it was a good 20 minutes before kick off so no one was sitting in it at the time. How a keeper can even attempt to stop a ball traveling with that force is beyond me (and they are a lot braver than me too!)

    14) or nonexistent at the Mol Lone, seeing as you never even got near 10,000 Wednesday night! touche me thinks!

Surely there is someone within the squad that is better at taking penalties than these two!! When Shane Long is fit, he should be taking the pens (well, according to youtube anyway) but in the meantime…someone…anyone.

Disregarding the old adage that a penalty scored is a good penalty, Brunt has only every hit one decent pen and that was the second one against Liverpool (which was unstoppable). The first one was a mishit, as was the pen this season against Everton. Please, please take him off penalties!

As for Odem, anyone that has every watched him warm up can tell you he is erratic at best. When Odem has time to think about it, Row Z watch out…

I can’t think of anyone within the starting line up that can consistently strike a ball well, but they can’t be worse than these two. Mulumbu maybe?
