Shane Long facing up to six weeks out for West Brom

West Brom striker Shane Long could be out for up to six weeks after scans revealed a cracked bone in his knee.

The Republic of Ireland international will miss his country’s two-legged Euro 2012 play-off against Estonia and may miss up to six Premier League matches, with the injury inflicted by Villa defender Alan Hutton on Saturday.

Scans showed serious bone bruising as well as a chipped bone on the inside of the 24-year-old’s right knee.

Long was injured early in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Villa Park by a challenge from Hutton that Baggies boss Roy Hodgson branded “vicious.”

While Baggies medics were relieved last night that scans showed up no major ligament strains, they admitted Long could take up to six weeks to recover from the bone damage.

So a player flies into another player, with feet high off the ground, studs showing, and hits the ‘innocent’ player with such force that he cartwheels into the air,and gets his knee bone broken from the challenge-

and referee Phil Dowd, watching it a few feet away, decides there was nothing wrong with it.

If he gave his honest opinion of the incident, then you can only conclude that he’s either blind or totally incompetent, either way,it means he’s not fit to Referee a Sunday parks game, let alone a premiership match.

    Absolutely disgusting.

McWinge only defends his player cos that’s how he played…..with no class…..get used to seeing that from the villa. Message to VTID, there is a big difference between tackling for the ball and two footed over the top tackles, trying to break a fellow professional’s leg. Let’s hope Hutton gets the same treatment at the Hawthorns, then you can come on here again talking about a “man’s game” again, with Hutton in plaster.

  15. 15
    JJ

5 you seem to be confusing “man’s” and “thug’s”; kicking lumps out of the opposition is easy, anyone can do it, its not part of the game. It ruins the game and potentially the careers of young men. There’s nothing manly about reckless challenges such as Hutton’s, just cowardly thuggishness. Rugby players do complain about the equivalent reckless challenges in their game (e.g. spear tackles, eye gouging, tackles across the neck), and quite rightly. Hutton is a disgrace, if McLeish is happy with the challenge then he is too; I agree, everyone who gets injured shouldn’t seek compensation, many injuries result from honest challenges; but when its a result of a deliberate and reckless challenge such as Hutton’s then I think compensation is warranted.

One question for No.5 Villa Till I Die (I assume). If Shane Long had been your son or brother receiving that tackle, would you so easily talk about ‘a man’s game’?
REAL men don’t resort to dirty and foul tactics, it’s beneath their dignity, something I suggest is totally lacking in your approach.
The F.A. should ban Hutton for exactly the same number of weeks it takes to get Shane fit again. ‘Let The Punishment Fit The Crime’.
This rule should be applied to all thugs, law-breakers and even Police who falsify evidence.

Billy we are not saying were all angels and yes there are those in our ranks that have mistimed and deliberately fouled with similar outcomes to Huttons on long. But should we allow this play carry on in our game!!. I don’t want to see any player have to suffer a broken leg / arm ankle etc and no one on this page should want to see premeditated mallace on the pitch…if they do then they don’t play football. Its a game we all want to be proud of, where skill and ability is not cut short by mindless tackles and elbows such as was displayed by Hutton on Saturday. My view is if a player injures another in such a way, and an enquiry finds him guilty of the foul then he should himself sit out the game until his opponent is back and playing, and if he never recovers then so be it that the accused never plays again. I have nearly broke my leg twice playing non-league soccer and at any level there is no place for the mallace tackles. They should throw the book at Hutton, Drogba etc who slide in like this with the feet in the air…….if someone did that to your lad in a school match you’d be livid, its no more acceptable here !!

Spot on. Until your post and I think Jack’s posted the same lines I was beginning to think I’d been hallucinating.

Everyone saying ‘he did nothing wrong.’ Herd was tangled with Olsson, I think Herd held Olsson first and then Olsson held Herd when on the ground. Herd was struggling to free himself but having done this had a kick back at Olsson. It was more petulant than vicious and fortunately missed its target (like everything else Villa did apart from Bent’s penalty and Hutton’s dissection of Long.)But the intent was there and like Beckham’s red card against the Argies all those years ago, technically it was a red card offence and this decision has undermined the linesman who was correct.

I would also say that Tamas red card was in similar circumstances. He had his back to the opponent and in frustration at being held stupidly swung his arm. The difference was that he made contact. Had Herd’s boot caught Olsson’s face the red card would have been upheld, the only difference being pure chance.

I watched the second half of the wolves/man. city game, and it seems this morning that most wolves’ posters were happy with their performance.

It may have been an improvement, but to concede five goals at home to a ‘second-string’ side, who were bringing on 17-year-olds for a bit of experience, and strolled around the pitch at half-pace,doesn’t bode well for the weekend’s game at City.

The commentator’s mentioned at least SEVEN first-team regulars were missing from the City side,so-

I’m just wondering,up ’till now,has any premiership club conceded 10 goals or more in a game?
