A ding dong derby for West Brom

West Brom blogger Jarrod Hill believes the losing manager in Black Country derby will feel the heat in the aftermath of Sunday’s showdown at the Hawthorns.

Two days to go to the Black Country derby and both clubs are talking up their chances for this Sunday’s high-noon kick off.

Roger Johnson has stated that Wolves will not lose this game and my old mucker Pete ‘Hilltop Baggie’ Danckert is telling all who will listen that the Baggies will be triumphant.

The so-called experts are predicting a draw and the managers are trying to remain focused after losing players to the internationals last weekend.

I think this derby will be difficult to call and, sadly, I see it that way due to the poor form of both teams.

West Brom boss Roy Hodgson hasn’t been able to find the perfect blend this season and could find himself having to shuffle the pack again this Sunday, as both Steven Reid and Peter Odemwingie face late fitness tests.

Personally, I still see the 4-4-2 formation as the problem. Peter Odemwingie and Shane Long are too similar and neither play well with their back to goal.

An enforced change could actually work in our favour, although I always believe our Nigerian international has a goal in him.

Simon Cox has remained patient and something tells me he could have a part to play when the drama unfolds on Sunday.

His man of the match display this week for the Republic of Ireland reminded Roy that he has a player with real talent waiting in the wings and I see’ Coxy’ as having that cocky attitude suited to derby games.

Win, lose or draw, I just hope the game isn’t decided via a refereeing decision. Chris Foy is the man in the middle and to say he hasn’t been kind to us in recent seasons is like saying the England rugby team like to party.

Foy was the only person in the ground that didn’t think that Gary Neville had hacked down Graham Dorrans when we played Manchester United last season and the same guy performed poorly against Stoke.

Wolves themselves have had their fair share of dodgy decisions of late and I just hope and pray the game is settled without an on-going debate about a controversial decision, even if it is in our favour.

The game is too early in the season to have a large impact on either team’s season, but both teams are desperate for three points and the shot of confidence that a derby win would bring.

I predicted in my blog on Tuesday that I could easily see the losing manager, if there is one, coming in for some pressure from disgruntled fans. A number of regular posters rubbished the idea, but I stand by what I wrote.

I wouldn’t suggest we consider Roy’s position no matter what the result on Sunday, but I do think a loss at home to our local rivals and a haul of five points from eight games would bring with it yet more questions.

His perceived stubbornness to continue with the 4-4-2 formation has had a number of fans already asking questions, including myself.

But a derby win, three points and a good performance would make all of the difference and, if we did it while playing 4-4-2, it would be even better.

The proof we all want that it can work, I am sure all West Brom fans who question the new formation would be pleased to be proved wrong on Sunday.

If it resulted in a win, I know I would settle for that and it wouldn’t be the first time I have dined on humble pie.

To finish off, I would like to say one thing to all West Brom and Wolves fans. Try to enjoy the game and occasion, because too often we have had seasons without a Black Country derby.

I get worked up myself but, the older I get, the more philosophical I seem to become.

Life flashes by us way too quickly and you have got to enjoy the good times without worrying too much that the bad times could be hidden around the next corner.

The Black Country derby in the Premier League, it’s what both sets of fans have longed for during those dark years in the football wilderness.

Long may they continue, with us winning the majority of them of course.

Come on you Baggie boys.

I am really pleased to see that you have stuck to your guns mate, regarding pressure on Roy if we lose. I agreed 100% with your thoughts ,as for regular posters rubbishing your this , you are fully entitled to that opinion and you are not living in cloud cuckoo land like them.

it is indeed a great occasion and one to be savoured and enjoyed by both sets of fans. i just hope we enjoy it a little bit more than they do, and hope we can look forward to two more of these derbies next season

i won’t be at the game myself for reasons beyond my control, but to everyone who’s going, have a great day

Good reading as always Jarrod. I’ve been on several Facebook pages about the game on Sunday but they are full of idiots from both sides showing how many swear words they know. It’s good to read intelligent comments and although you clearly want your Sunday to be happier than mine you put the game at exactly the right level of importance. Who’s going to win? Impossible to know I feel. We had the better of our two games last time but you finished higher. Although clearly I am hoping for three points I really don’t get this hatred thing between us. The one thing that I know for sure is that life as a Wolves fan would be much poorer if the Albion didn’t exist.

Its here again. The BCD! All week has been about banter with Wolves fans but now talking is nearly over and we just have to turn up on the day.

Every derby is a must win for either team but I honestly think this game could be the spring board for us to finally start our season. 4-5-1 or 4-4-2, all we can ask for is total committment and quality when we have the ball.

Personally, I would go with Dorrans, Scharner and Mulumbu to give us the steel in the middle as can see it being a scrappy affair, with both teams not firing on all clylinders. However, RH is unlikely to veer away from 4-4-2 which he has played for much of his career so would like Cox to get some game time as he looked very sharp for ROI.

On another note, what time will the Vine be open from as planning on getting in nice and early.

I would take 4 points from next 3 games no matter who we get them off, though I’d prefer them to come in the next 2 games. I don’t see a problem with 442, we get hung up on formations too much. Individual errors have cost us points this season. Chelsea longs ball to Tchoyi, Stoke Tamas & Foster mix up, Swansea Sharner giving away a penalty needlessly, Sunderland backing off players to run freely at our goal. Cut the errors out and the results will come. 442 Isn’t the problem its errors by individuals

In every other aspect of life, i have a very positive demeanour.
That positivity, diminishes somewhat when it comes to the Albion.

This particular fixture however, always fills me with negative anxiety, moreover this term, given our faltering and unconvincing perfomances.

It is with hope rather than expectation, that we find some of last seasons form, which at times was breathtaking, but i would settle for adequate on Sunday.

I think we can do it, I just don’t want to come away from the game thinking Wolves wanted it more than us, that’s inexcusable.

It will be a shame if Reid and Odemwingie miss out. I think Reid has done well this season and Odemwingie is capable of winning a game on his own if he gets back on form. If Odemwingie does need replacing I would rather it be Tchoyi with Cox coming on later if needed rather than the other way round.

If we play to our potential we will do it because we have better players than them. 3-1 Albion…. COME ON BOYS!!!!!!!

Someone jokingly said this week that Albion should recall Kevin Philips for this match; a great quip, but in my opinion, there’s a serious side to it as well.

Watching the previous two derbies I felt Albion lacked that something different that Kevin always brought to the table, especially against the Wolves. I’m going to stick my neck out and state that only two players have the ability to recreate that something ‘extra’ Kevin had and they are Graham Dorrans and Simon Cox.

    Bring it on!

Agreed on a draw as they ain’t beaten us since Roberts grabbed that hatrick and I believe it will continue.

I just hope the Metro is running smooth this time as that was a major problem for the fans last time.

For me Shane Long should play in a 4-5-1 formation, I know I sound like a broken record but it’s how we managed such a good season last term.

I don’t think we have looked very fluid this season but am hoping this changes sunday. putting no stock in the result at the custard bowl last season they just caught us at the right time.

I would drop Ozzie and play cox just behind long maybe bring ozzie on later (if fit) to terrorise Johnson( most over rated center half ever)

Lose this and then lose to villa and i think questions may be asked about Hodgson, if we are to sacrifice some of our natural attacking instincts in must be in exchange for results if not i think i would rather lose the Di Matteo way watching exciting attacking football.

Good to hear from you spouting sense as usual. I commented on here some time ago that ‘most Wolves fans are decent blokes like most Albion fans.’ Predictably I got some criticism from my own lot for it but I stick with it.

Of course I want to win both games and finish above you (way above you hopefully) but that doesn’t alter that we’re all Black Country blokes and it’s only down to location and ancestry that we support who we do.

Football is a game to be enjoyed.

Which ‘experts’ are favouring the draw? The bookies have their money on us at 2/1 as opposed to the draw being 5/2 and Wolves 3/1.

I have no idea what to expect. We’ve both been below par of late and although I think a win will really kick start the season for us, I’m not entirely confident. It’s the 100th meeting between the two and in total, over those meetings alone, there’s only 6 points between us (in our favour). Our record is somewhat better at the Hawthorns but obviously, stats count for nothing in a meeting like this.

I think I’d like to see the formation shuffled around a bit to incorporate the more physical players in Scharner and Tchoyi, and although Wingie is most dangeruos on the last defender, I’d be intersted to see him pushed out and having a run at whichever substandard left-back the Wanderers decide to field.

Whatever happens, for me, this is the most important date on the footballing calendar, and I will be majorly disappointed if, like at the custard bowl last season, we fail to turn up.

Always read your blogs and usually love em and leave without comment. This weeks is a cracker again, and I’m hopeful for a humdinger on Sunday… I’m impressed with your mature comments and am sure the majority of fans from both sides would be in agreement, however the maturity will be needed in response to the minority who will looking for trouble as usual I’m afraid.
I would have to disagree about your stance on the manager situation though, and hence my urge to respond on this occasion. I respect your viewpoint, but I’m suprised you’ve adopted the short termism that’s so common amongst modern day football fans now. RH is trying to change things… build a more solid base for us to move fwd with. Ok, it’s a more defensive approach, and the players are having to adapt to it… but I think it’s already showing signs of promise. Personally, if Cox gets the nod on Sunday, I’m hopeful of another step in the right direction regarding formation – a second striker that’s more likely to fulfil roles defensively, with higher work rate, is what the system needs.
Times are changing, and we need to adapt to compete & stay in this division… otherwise, it’s more entertaining yoyo’ing I’m afraid – which do you prefer?

You are right on Coxy. If being MofM for Ireland in an international doesn’t get him in to the starting line-up for his first Prem’ game this season, then nothing will. Also, can we have Tchoyi back instead of Jerome Thomas? Perhaps Peter O, with his dodgy ankle, can be on the bench to come on later and – joy of joy – start with a 4-5-1 with Dorrans. We will need both the right formation and some real battlers.

    Hi Jarrod,

I think this could be the turning point. Personally I think it’s less the 4-4-2 and more the shape of it and the distance between the lines. The midfield 4 don’t seem anywhere near as close to the front 2 as the 5 was to Odemwingie last season.

However, with Wolves having lost 4 on the bounce, I think there will be an inclination for them to sit a bit deeper to protect themselves which might allow us to seize the initiative. If that happens, I think we’re good enough to beat them.

I think their best chance, like at Molineux, was to run their crackers off and harass us high up the pitch, but us being at home, I think (and I’m not normally optimistic) we’ll win by a couple of goals!!

    JJ

I don’t wanna question what you’ve written mate but can you tell me where you saw those prices? If you put £20 on an Albion win at 2/1, £20 on a draw at 5/2 and £20 on Wolves at 3/1, then your outlay would be £60 and the worst case scenario would be an Albion win where you’d get your £60 back. The draw and a Wolves win would leave you in profit!!

I agree with you about the distance between the front two and the midfield but don’t you think it’s because we seem to have stopped passing our way forward and want to hit the ball long too often. I can see the temptation as we now have two quick strikers but it results in the ball coming back at us too quickly. I think that was the problem in the Swansea and Sunderland games especially.

Message for Sunday, let’s pass them to death. Although the temptation to trample all over those little shrinking violets from up the road that Lonely mentions might be too much.

    Hi Jarrod,

I’ve notice that,in view of the current form of both clubs, many people expect the game to be short of quality on Sunday, but this wouldn’t be such a surprise as you often find ‘derby’ games end up more about hard graft and endurance than subtle skills.

If this IS the case, then the advantage is likely to go to the team who have the strongest physical presence, and the more powerful mental attitude-

basically, whoever has the most passion, and WANTS to win it.

With this in mind,my own team selection would include guys who have these qualities-so if Scharner is recalled, and both Billy Jones and Simon Cox come into the picture, that’s fine by me.
I said the other day that we were missing the likes of Scharner,Brunt, and Reid at Molineux last season, and as a result we looked lightweight, especially with those dreaded corner kicks.

So the key thing is to show from the start that we mean business, this type of game seperates the men from the boys,so let’s hope that there’s a lot more balls on the pitch than the one the players are trying to put in the net.

Oh boy,I sure wish I was playing Sunday instead of just watching this one………
