Joe Mattock tip for West Brom place

West Brom defender Joe Mattock was today tipped to push for a first-team place after earning a surprise England under-21 recall.

Mattock received a late call-up for England’s Euro 2013 qualifiers in Iceland and Norway more than two years after he last played for the under-21s.

And West Brom assistant boss Michael Appleton believes the confidence boost from his inclusion will help Mattock kick-start a stuttering Baggies career.

Appleton said: “I think it’s fantastic for him and it’s not the first time he’s been with the England set-up.  He’s pushing the likes of Nicky Shorey, Steven Reid, Billy Jones and others.

“We’ve got some good full-backs in the squad who are all pushing each other and fighting for places in the starting line-up. And Joe is now part of that.”

Mattock became the second youngest player behind Theo Walcott to represent England at Under-21 level when he made his debut in 2007, aged just 17.
