Nicky Shorey backs ‘real’ West Brom

West Brom defender Nicky Shorey today claimed the ‘real Baggies’ are on their way back as they began the long countdown to the Black Country derby.

The full-back believes the team are edging towards to their best after an improved display in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Sunderland.

Roy Hodgson’s men will take on Wolves at the Hawthorns on October 16 and Shorey reckons they will return to action after the international break closing in on their top form.

He said: “I think Saturday was of our best performances of late. It felt more like us.

“We see all the time in training that the lads have quality on the ball and we showed that at Sunderland, which bodes well for the future.”

    Nicky,
Us Baggies know we are a lot better than we have been showing this season to date. The squad showed that last season. Just need to settle into a given formation, By the way, Joe Mattock is now showing why we bought him!. Dawson is also advancing.

We are at home to Wolves after the break, we need to learn from our mistakes last season and the players need to realise that this is a massive game for the fans, let alone how much it means league table wise.

Last seasons displays against them were awful. We gave them a chance to laud it over us due to lack luster performances by players who appeared to not realise that this fixture was a derby game. Not just any derby game either. It’s older than the North London, Liverpool and Manchester derbies. In fact, this fixture was played in the first league season in 1888 (as was the villa fixture). Down the years I have seen some of the most exciting football played against the Wolves (remember the year we beat them four times?)

The players need to do this for the supporters and don’t even get me started on how Sky keep on snubbing this fixture year in year out yet we don’t seem to be able to turn on the TV without watching another Old firm or luke warm scouse encounter.

So come on lads. This is the big one. Win this and we can all start to look forward positively. This really is a 6 pointer, because defeat will deflate the losers and the winners can run on the fumes of that victory for a good few games. If you win the fans will get right behind you. COME ON YOU BAGGIES!!!

Excellent post. We need to hit them hard early and not let up for the full ninety odd minutes. A half baked show like the one at the Moulinex last season just won’t wash. I’m certainly no fan of BFR but I’ll pinch one of his sayings for our players ‘Don’t tell me, show me.’

Good blog’, No 2. But I suppose it is not surprising that so many of our players don’t appreciate the real meaning of this great derby game. In our last home programme, there was a team photograph from 1962: Howe, Robson and Kevan, the England international trio, plus Welsh international Graham Williams and Scottish international Bobby Hope. And Stan Jones, Chuck Drury, Alec Jackson, Clive Clark… Now THAT team knew all about the importance of Wolves games. Happy days.

2- absolutely agree, the Wolves game is massive and more than just a game. I do remember when we beat them 4 times in one season, I was there at 3 of them!! I was also there at Custard bowl last season for a disgracful half soaked performance. It was horrible so the Albion owe me one!!

On a different point how well is Chris Wood doing! He is coming on brilliantly, it’s just my opinion but I would rather bring him on at the moment than the Cox, Fortune, Bednar options we have at the club currently.

2, I know Albion get very excited when they get to play the Wolves, and rightly so. But as wolves are now premier league established, and therefore more used to seeing the likes of Man u, Chelsea, Man city etc (all of which we beat last season )the Albion fixture, while still important, dosnt hold the same panache for us as it does for you.
It used to be very intense, but of late Albion are just another side we have to beat. (another 3-1 would be nice )
Ive watched your games with interest this season, and unless there is a massive turn around, then i fear you wont be able to follow Wolves into the uncharted waters of a third season top flight.
We enjoy playing Albion, but it seems it is much much more of an event for you than it is for us.
Dont get me wrong, i know its the highlight of your season to play us, and may the best team win, But its just an un-glamourous fixture for us now, 3 points is what we see it as really.
Shame Birmingham have gone down, cus that really did have an edge.

    B90,
Agree, Although I like Cox. Wood reminds me of Derek Kevan, not a brilliant footballer, but didn’t he know where the back of the net was, internationally as well. Cox now gives us more in midfield though. So for the time being I would leave Chris where he is, time is on his side and the experience will benefit him.

Nicky, we were 2-0 up when I got on to that game and 5 minutes later, I just ‘knew’ we could easily lose it too. The passing went ragged, backwards, sideways and SLOW with Sunderland pouring through us at will. We needed to close ranks, chase every ball, even hoof it into row Z to break their momentum.
After 2-2 we found our way again and almost showed last season’s form. YOU may know why we are not the same force. We can only guess.

I also think the Wulfies will be up for this derby match having been swindled by poor decisions recently. The Sky bubble is imploding, let’s hope we can get electronic help with critical decisions in the very near future. That lady pub owner should be made a Dame of the Realm. Well done missus woman !

Where have all the Dingles gone?,
    long time passing.
Where have all the Dingles gone?,
Back to the dark side every one.

Isn’t it pleasant again, on our site since wolves have lost their last four games?. They are having a real go at venting their spleens with anyone who says anything detrimental about them, on their site, truly is the dark side. Even John and Tim their bloggers are taking some real stick. (No need to panic Bomber and Hilltop, you are safe.) That’s what I don’t understand, the way we go at them, you would think they would be over here in their droves. I’ve posted a few, well quite a few enlightening posts on their site, but E&D and Head Banger are having none of it.
Oh well I’ll just enjoy the peace and quiet. ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

    6 Lonely-

    Tut tut.

Must try harder than that I’m afraid.

‘Of late,Albion are just another side we have to beat’.

Looking at wolves current form, isn’t it a case that Albion are another side you really WISH you could beat?

Actually, you’re a bit like your team-

you seem to have been missing for the last month.

Anyway,I suppose it’ll be a warm-up for us before the BIG one against villa.

    Now THERE’S a game…………..

6- Albion Wolves is only a big game to me because of how much I dislike your arrogant disillusional fans. I love beating Coventry, Cardiff and West Ham for the same reason, I don’t like their fans, but they are not derbies.

Our LOCAL derby has and always will be Villa who are 4/5 miles down the road, no Wolves who are 15 miles down the road in another county.

We all know the big one for you guys is Stafford Rangers away… A few more years of Mad Mick and you will have it back!

Lonely and friends (Clacka, Lulu, Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones.)
The difference between you lot and us is that we realise things aren’t going great for us whereas you continue to blather on about big established PL club etc.

The other difference is that we know it’s a matter of time before our talented squad click into a formation that brings out the best in them, then watch us go. While you continue to flap around blaming officials, blaming Mad Mick, blaming Jez, blaming Steve ‘Anfield’ Morgan, blaming injuries, blaming late goals, blaming Alan Hansen, blaming Jack Hayward, blaming Glenn Hoddle, blaming the Bhatti brothers.

Be scared be very scared Odemwingie’s coming to get you.

    Odd Fellow,
1/ Aston Villa are our main rivals, 2/ ALBION have spent more time in the Premiership than wolves. 3/ ALBION have finished in a higher position than wolves in the Premiership. Nice to know you have seen some football this season by watching ALBION, mind you Johnson’s header was a cracker. Jimmy Murray would have been proud of that. Pity it was in the wrong net. Wonder if you will be able to hang on by your finger tips again this season for the third time?. Enjoy your day at ours blaming the referee.

6.Lone. Good morning and welcome to reality. I’m surprised Jack’s Head isn’t on correcting a point of accuracy. There are TWO teams in any match, (even when one of them is Wolves),
so it must read, “May the better team win”, not ‘the best’. ‘Good, better, best’ implies more than two, so when there are only two,
it’s ‘better’. Got it mate? Now drink your warm milk and back to sleep and that weird dreamland you just left.
