Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Peter Odemwingie in Albion pep talk
Monday 19th September 2011, 10:58AM BST.
Peter Odemwingie today urged Albion to move on from the dismal defeat at Swansea that left the Baggies propping up the Premier League.
The striker insists the Baggies must draw a line under the 3-0 loss at the Liberty Stadium and focus on this week’s meetings with Everton in the Carling Cup and boss Roy Hodgson’s former club Fulham.
Odemwingie said: “These are games that you want to forget and there are always bad days during the season.
“Now we have to forget this and get our points at home next week. It was obviously not the result we were looking for.
“Maybe the performance in the second half was better but the first goal came from a penalty was because of an unnecessary tackle, the second goal was unexpected from a corner and third one from a goal-kick.
“Three is too many, so you can’t say it was just our mistakes because they deserved their victory.
“I don’t think you can say whose fault it was or pick out one line that showed less aggression.
“I think the overall team performance was poor and that’s why the result was like that.”

I expect we’ll get a few cretinous “He’s rubbish, sell him” remarks, but ultimately we’re not giving the lad a chance playing as we are.
We should be looking to try and get the ball to him in the opponents’ final third and let him have a go at the infintely-vulnerable Ashley Williams one-on-one, not hoofing aimless balls into the channels for him to chase or giving it to his feet after 10 minutes of crab football when he has 4 defenders around him. The first time he got space one-on-one, he murdered the full-back and forced the keeper to make a save.
Before we start hanging everyone out to dry, we have some good footballers, but let’s play to their strengths.

Do your talking with your feet pete! up next fulham, need 3 points from that game. But do we play 442 or 451?

PO and LONG will never score enough goals to keep us up if they get no support.we need dorrans in for some creativity.anyone any idea how long before gera is fit finally?

The second goal unexpected from a corner. Doesn’t he mean unmarked! What does he think training is for .. hilarious strikers comments. Seriously though E&D / WBA what was the point of this interview!
Swansea thoroughly deserved to win that one.
They never stopped running AT US, we looked bewildered and lost, far too slow to react,
and first half, overrun. Second half was better, (let’s face it, it couldn’t have got much worse), but some of that was due to Swansea being 3-0 up and just holding what they had.
I hope to see a big improvement, regardless of system, we should give most any team a hard game. If we see certain players with a little hole in the top of their head, we shall know the boot has been applied in a much lower place!

i noticed you havent mentioned the fact that Olsson gave you a rollocking for not pulling your weight, which brings me to the point how did Olsson allow a 3ft nothing bloke to outjump him for there 3rd goal.

I don’t want to join in with the ‘doom and gloomer’s',but these player interviews always make me chuckle.
Peter tells us fans ‘these are games you want to forget’.
Sorry Pete, but that thought had already crossed our minds.
And the best way to prevent us remembering is to tell your team mates not to do it again!
Basically,we are the audience, and you are the performers-
so stop winning the ‘raspberry’,or ‘turkey’ awards, and try winning the ‘Oscars’ in future instead!!

Before we all start getting too carried away, can I just remind people that we stand in exactly the same position as last season (when the games played are examined – substitute Blackpool for Swansea).
Upward and onward….

Strikes me that we have played really poorly in the last two games. Funny thing is both Brunt and Tychoi have not played full games in those two.

Never mind all the waffle, the marking was abysmal. We all know that we needed defenders in the summer. What did we do? Sign a bloke fron Ipswich who will never be the answer. Then a fullback from Preston???? are they the answer?don’t know, Lets play ‘em on Wednesday and see how they perform. In any case, 3 from 15 is crap. Nevermind all the blether about the teams we have had to play in the opening games 3 points from 15 IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

Tchoyi was one player who might have made a difference. The Swans would never have met anyone like that before and what has he done wrong in the games he has played?
“unexpected from a corner”… Oh dear. Sadly Peter, therer are a lot of clubs out there that actually practice corners so that they’re able to score from them. Some even practice defeding them, would you believe?
Negativity aside though, we need to put this behind us and look towards the next Premier League game. Fulham got a good result at the weekend but are by no means unbeatable and there are a lot of ‘stars in stripes’ that need to prove that they’re worth their place in the starting lineup.
‘Mr Reliable’ Shorey has looked out of sorts so far this season, and Thomas and Dorrans (amongst others) have only shown glimpses of what they’re capable of. Hopefully they’ll soon get back in the swing of things.
Finally, I still have question marks above the 4-4-2 formation as the midfield seems a bit disjointed from the forwards and we haven’t looked half as attractive/dangerous as when we had a midfielder sat behind the forward. I think that if RH is to continue with his favoured formation, we’re going to need to throw a more attack minded midfielder into the centre, possibly at the expense of Scharner, although he could drop back to centre half. In truth, Hodgson probably knows more than me, but Albion have always won the league on FIFA with a formation similar to the following:
Foster
Reid
Scharner
Olsson
Shorey
Brunt
Dorrans
Mulumbu
Thomas
Odemwingie
Long

Lets forget about it, right up until my blog re opens the wounds tomorrow, lol.
Cyril calm down, put the mouse down and step away from the keyboard.
Shirley Bassey is currently Warrens nemesis and what is a super hero without a nemesis?
Warren attack!!!
Nothing wrong with cross dressing Cyril, only when you mix it with a copious amount of alcohol and poor eye sight does it become dangerous. Like when my contact lenses dropped out due to the air conditioning in the bar id been in all day. Dont panic i never got to stare at the last turkey in the shop, he/she turned me down.
Saturday was so disappointing, the shape looks worse than my nannas bunion abused feet, and the players moved about as quick, although she was always quick off the mark when the co op had their 3 for 2 deals on.
Fact is 4-4-2 stretches us too far, we cant compete, keep the ball, and thus tire quicker than an ITV programme basically based around the outcome being red or black.
Like my Grandad used to say, 4-5-1 is better than 4-4-2, only kidding…….
he used to say….Jarrod if you find something that works stick to it….. well im still looking gramps if your up there watching me now. He aint dead he lives in the flats….he still works hard staining floors….he doesnt mean to hes just old.

To me it looks like we have started to believe that we are a good team. Your only as good as your last game suggests and from teh Nowich and Swansea games we have looked lethargic, and a little arrogant, whereas against the big boys we seem to know we are going to be in a battle, and hassle, chase and work on making decent moves and passes. I get really frustrated with talented footballers looking lazy on the ball , going sideways and backwards and playing at training pace. I watced our game on TV just after watching the Man Utd and Chelsea game. Their football is incisive and quick and even theior front players chase balls back and work fo the team. We should expect no different from our players whoever we play. Norwich and Swansea looked more than a yard faster tan our players and went forward with purpose. Longs back pass summed it all up for me.
I am sure RH will work his magic again but hopefully sooner rather than later.

3 from 15.says it all!defence, defence, defence, what a shambles. Are we ever going to to get it right? In the summer, what did we do sign one from Ipswich, and Preston? Hope they play on Wed.lets see if they are the answer.Doubt it.

On a different subject i see Joey Barton has made an enemy of Wolverhampton.
Now this is a fight that bemuses me. I dont want to cheer either on, a bit like the time my Maths teacher had a ding dong with my Art teacher in front of the whole year at school.
I did like my Maths teacher until i found out that being contrite wasnt some sort of mathematical compliment. The crazy art teacher put me in detention when i explained to him that it was for artistic reasons why i had set fire to his classroom curtains.

Oh and Cyril you cannot use the word Dingle anymore as it can be regarded as being prejudiced towards farmers.
Like last week i was told i couldnt call Polish staff eastern European??!!!
As i stood fabbergasted with a look on my face that said who, what, when??? The person said to me, “Polish people now feel the phrase Eastern European holds an unwanted feel of being down trodden and in some way negative. They do not want people in the UK to think of them in any other way other than being equal”.
To which i replied, “you mean you dont want to be lumped together with other nations in a geographic area because of identity”?
She said “yes thats right and the fact we are so much better”. (Honest with no twinge of irony)
To which i replied, “but you have just referred to here as the UK and not England, could i have the same gripe”?
She said, “dont be silly as England is in the UK”.
Fed up i ended the conversation with “and where the £$%^ is Poland, South America”???

I am not getting carried away with our poor start nor do i think it’s time to press the panic button just yet……. However i would like to make a couple of points. I believe we should go back to our tried and tested formation of 4-5-1 from last season. We look a little bit like we are feeling sorry for ourselves and i have seen all but the Swansea games and the tempo we are playing at this season doesn’t seem to have the intensity of last. We keep giving the ball away and our ball retention is poor this season compared to last. We also have given new deals to certain players and have increased their weekly wage and im sorry they simply arn’t earning it at present. I would label Brunt, Mulumbu and Odemwingie in this catagory and Thomas, Scharner, Morrison and Shorey all look badly out of form. I believe we need to change the formation but increase the pace in the team.
Does anyone think we are trying to cruise through games and look like we need a kick up the backside? Very poor result on Saturday. I honestly expected at least a point against a side who hadn’t scored a goal yet this season!
Come on Roy sort it out!

Bad result, depressing few days but let’s get one thing straight:
I think it’s fair to say we were generally quite pleased with the summer’s work with the exception of a centre-back on the last day, who would’ve presumably played instead of Dawson all being well. Dawson didn’t put a foot wrong all game. So even if tightwad, satanical, Trevor Summers-reincarnated JP was in charge of transfers and it was him that said “we’re not buying anybody”……we’d have still have lost the game 3-0………
Report abuse
One of the worst performances I’ve seen in a long long time. Thought Dawson did ok, Olsson defended ok but distribution poor, Foster had very little to do but couldn’t be blamed for the goals. The rest of the team – really really poor.
Reid, Mulumbu, Scharner, Odemwinge and Long all had shocking days at the office. Unlike them.
Dorrans and Brunt tried to get things going when coming on but were poor. Long was dreadful, Morrison looked out of his depth and I’m normally pro Jimmy. Shorey – yet another performance well below average. As for Thomas’ performance – simply unacceptable.
We got no rub of the green, it all ran for Swansea but we didn’t deserve anything so no complaints. Long’s miss just before the 2nd was crucial. Once again individual errors costing us goals. No need for Scharner’s challenge – going nowhere. Who’s man flicked the corner on for the 2nd goal – woeful? Shorey wrong side and skinned for the 3rd…..
most disappointing game – worse than Ipswich away last year (not on the lack of effort front tho). Need a massive response on Saturday as only 3 points will do and a performance is required as the last three haven’t been clever.
Keep the faith

Why fix something that is’nt broken?
Last season we played our best football with a 4 5 1 formation. we played our first two games against Man U and Chelsea 4 5 1.
We change to 4 4 2 against Stoke Norwich and Swansea also with the wrong personal. Against Norwich we were lucky to get all 3 points.
I hope Mr Hogdson is’nt another Mr Mowbrey who insists on his football philosphy being the right one and will not change it. Look where that got us.
Go back to a 4 5 1. It is not a defensive formation as many people think it is. It is actually a very flexible formation that can revert to attack from defence very quickly.
4 5 1 also helps our defence which is still quit poor.
Please go back to what we are good at and stop trying to accommodate two strikers.

If it’s any consolation, we were rubbish too and made the thug Barton look good! Villa are not much better either.
Roll on the Carling Cup… or is that going to be another debacle?

I’m going to have more come back than Frank Sinatra, but I think this one is important.
I had the information earlier and I was waiting for the Express and Dingle to put it out cause I’m sure they must have received by know ,but knowing there bias the’re probably letting us sweat.
The reason for the breaking of the minutes silence at Swansea was due to a coach of Albion fans arriving late.
They were entering the ground in high spirits walking into the concourse below the stands and up the stairs to there seats when they met the stewards they were told of the silence and shut up immediately and no offence was caused or taken by Swansea Football club.
Thank you and good night.

It was a pitiful performance and with 3 points at the weekend it may even be forgotten, but I do have to voice some concerns about our tactics.
Hodgson of course needs time to implement his strategy but this WBA team is not equipped to defend for 90 mins. Not least because it wastes the attacking talent that we have in abundance.
I could not believe how negative we were on Saturday and against Norwich. We had no interest in doing anything other than keeping it tight, living off scraps, and then hoping the front two could make something out of nothing.
I voiced slight concerns about our off the ball movement after the Man Utd and Chelsea game. Our players seem far too concerned with their defensive shape. They seem frightened or reluctant to move when we have the ball. I’d hoped it was just a case of playing the top two but this negativity seems to have continued.
Our players look and play like they haven’t seen a ball since the previous week’s game. Our passing these past two games has been an absolute joke and the players look confused by the whole thing.
I’m hoping these are just creaks and overcompensations as we attempt to sort out the defensive side of things. If we continue to employ kick and rush tactics then this is going to be a long long season….

I have had chance to reflect a bit and calm down.
Where do we begin with what is wrong?
Lacking invention.
No drive from the midfield.
Wingers ineffective, being stopped.
Defence under constant pressure.
Supply to forwards non existant.
Player body language looks wrong.
Some quite shocking tackles going in
Outplayed for two games running.
The most apparent thing that has changed is that we are playing 442 now. The one thing that we managed last season was that we were not often overrun in midfield and last week and this, we have been forced to lump the ball from the back becauase we have been unable to play the ball through midfield. The second half of Stoke had a similar look. Get Dorrans in, move Long to the bench and see how that goes because if we play 442 on Saturday and play poorly again, I think Roy needs to have a look at himself. I am not saying “Hang Roy” but if something is not working, how long do you persist until you go back to what does work?
