Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Gabriel Tamas charged by the FA
Monday 12th September 2011, 3:00PM BST.
Albion defender Gabriel Tamas has been charged by the FA after being embroiled in an elbowing controversy in the victory at Norwich.
The FA today took action after examining replays of the stoppage time clash with Canaries striker James Vaughan.
Tamas has until 6pm on September 13 to respond to the charge. If the player admits the charge, he may accept an automatic three match sanction.
Norwich manager Paul Lambert confirmed referee Mark Halsey did not see the elbow, which left Vaughan needing hospital treatment, but Baggies boss Roy Hodgson insisted it was accidental.
He said: “It was an unintentional elbow. I looked at it on the TV afterwards because it was very contentious at the time.
“It’s an unfortunate elbow and it doesn’t make it any happier for James Vaughan whether it’s intentional or accidental.
“It’s still a painful blow. As Tamas turned, he caught him with his elbow but I’m 100 per cent convinced it was unintentional.”

It started as an open game, both teams going for a win. It became dangerous and nasty towards the end. As I saw the incident, Vaughan jumped AT and all over Tamas who raised his arms strongly as protection, the elbow probably a bit too high though. Not intentional, but typical of the tackles that were the order of the day by then.
Just suppose Tamas had yielded easily. We would have had the Tamas = Carson postings everywhere.
The reason I don’t think it was intentional is that in the context of the game it would have been comletely stupid. To risk a sending off and giving a penalty away so close to the end of the game would have been madness, I don’t think Tamas is that stupid? Anyway , we were mugged against Stoke, the ref. should’ve blown for a foul (high studs and kicking the ball out of Foster’s hands), so we deserve the break.
Itl be interesting to see if he does get banned, cast your minds back to last season, when Rooney purposefully elbowed James Mcarthy in the face while running across the pitch, but did he get banned or fined? No. Just because its Rooney. So if Tamas does get banned Albion should mention the Rooney elbow and see what exuse the FA come up with.
I would love to believe it was accidental but having seen it again quite a few times i think Tamas knew what he was doing.

Some problems yesterday: In playing 4-4-2, it puts the emphasis on Thomas and Dorrans (or whoever plays wide left and right) to track back and protect the two full backs. It’s an exhausting role.
Neither did so at Norwich, particularly Thomas who is looking ever lightweight, in need of working more on his left foot strength and is turning in to what we used to call a ‘cry babeee.’
Paul Scharner should anchor himself in front of the back four, using his height and power to get in headers and tackles – not wander around the pitch and get caught out of position so often. He does not have the stamina for it. This is why we looked so lopsided on too many occasions and gaps opened up right across the back four. An alternative is to bring back the on-loan Hurst at right back and let Steven Reid do the job as anchor man.
Finally (and this is a list of moans), can we start taking a few decent corners? I’ve seen all the games so far, including Bournemouth, and witnessed only two – Dorrans, left hand side, Birmingham Road end, v Stoke.
No wonder Roy said in the after-match interview that the team seems intent on giving him heart trouble.
We deserved our luck yesterday, though, and that includes getting away with the Tamas incident. We’ve had zero good fortune in the first three league games. There is no better time to start righting some of the wrongs in training, after a win like that.

1)The Blue and White glasses need to be removed.Vaughan didnt jump at Tamas. The game was not a dirty game, apart from the Albion players Reid and Tamas committing stupid fouls.
KP you did get the break.

if the FA enquire into the elbow then i think elliott bennett should be investigated into also as his tackle on dorrans was disgusting. had he slid from the other side, he would of broke dorrans leg and it was lucky that his leg/ankle bent the correct way after the impact. Then again Bennett is a wolves fan so i can understand why he would do something like this. good win tho and now we can start playing
Report abuse
Wonder if the stud stamp on Dorrans ankle just after Morrison’s introduction will also be investigated, don’t tell me the referee didn’t see it from four feet away and looking at the incident. Should have been a straight red.

I was at the game and still haven’t seen the incident on TV. If he did it intentionally, then he deserves to be punished.
I’m not sure why Dermot Gallagher needs to become involved though. He’s not a referee anymore, wasn’t the ref yesterday and is surely on making Halsey’s job harder by commenting on what should have happened afterwards.

So far the only reason I can see for you posting on these boards is so you can take an irrational swipe at the Albion?
Are you trying to suggest we’re lucky?

i was there yesterday and vaughan did jump into and onto tamas. After tamas had been treated him and vaughan had words and there is no doubt in my mind that Tamas was looking for him on the next attack.Regardless of the time or how balanced the game is we all know that the red mist can decsend at any time.
regarding the game itself i thought we were very poor and the pace and movement that we showed last year from midfield and attack has been missing in all of our games this season (so far)
Reagarding thomas i noticed at spurs last year that when he got the ball rather than push forward with the ball he will hold it up and wait for re-inforcements to arrive.AS he gets picked every week i have to assume that this is RH’s coaching/tactics.
I am hoping that once we start to accumulate points that we will revert to the style that served us well last year BUT even if we dont i have to trust the manager to get it right

I think the team is struggling to adapt to the 4-4-2 formation, and we have lost that creativity that we had in abundance last season. The fact that we have to play two defensive midfielders speaks volumes of what Hodgson thinks of the defence. I do not see what is wrong with the 4-5-1 formation that suited us so well at the end of last season, especially now we have even more midfielders to choose from. I still haven’t properly viewed the Tamas incident as i watched the game online and they didint really replay it, but if he is guilty then i hope he gets a ban. Their is no room for elbows in football!

10. i have noticed that with Thomas, he never seems to look at getting beyond the fullback to run onto a through ball, he just seems to hold the ball up and wants to beat the defender with skill and trickery. It just doesn’t make sense to me, he is one of the fastest players at the club, and one of the most skillfull with the ball at his feet, so i would give him license to bomb on at every opportunity!
I don’t know if i have my Blue and White glasses on but im really not sure having seen it a few times. He looks over his left shoulder to see where Vaughan is then puts his right arm out to stop him running past him. I don’t think he “did him” but no question he caught him. I honestly believe only Tamas will 100% know whether it was intentional or not. Great result though if not a great game.

I find JT does this periodically, you rightly mention the Spurs game where he didn’t play particularly well. I recall him doing it against Fulham at home too and Wigan away. Then there are games when he goes straight for the full-back and is a constant threat.
I could be wrong but can’t help think this may be something to do with his fitness. It strikes me that we still have do a lot of nursing with him- he often misses training- and if he’s not 100% in body and mind, you can tell early on in the game how well he’ll play.
I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that Tamas knew exactly what he was doing. Extremely disappointing behaviour – I reckon he will escape punishment from the FA though. Could easily have cost us 2 points – idiotic.
An excellent and very much needed result. Must pick something up on Saturday away at Swansea – 4points from next 2 games required please……
Report abuse
Unfortunately, I thought it looked like a deliberate elbow.
And as for Thomas – he is doing exactly what I complained about pre season – and i was talking nonsense! – well there you go.
I’m sorry, but accidental or intentional, this was an irresponsible and reckless challenge. Notwithstanding the injury to Vaughan and the possibility of a ban for Tamas, his action could have cost us the points if the ref had seen it and a penalty had been given. This player has shown a lack of discipline before, and the sooner young Dawson takes his place in the team the better IMHO.

7 – At last someone with a brain talking sense.
Of course it was intentional – maybe not the split lip but certainly the elbow in the face. Tamas is a dirty player and we are not a dirty side. He should have gone this summer. Should he be banned please let’s bring on Dawson and see if his U21 England form can be translated to the Premiership.
Regardless to our opinions he will be punished for it.
Couldnt agree more about Thomas, he never seems to take his full back on anymore, has he lost his pace? Or is he too knackered from helping Reid out with Hodgsons tactics? Id give him a go down the right so he can bomb straight down the line and play Brunt on the lefr where he belongs as im not a fan of right footers on lefr and left footers on the right. Also Scharner needs to be dropped for Dorrans as we lack creativity in the middle of the park. Anyone agree?

3 Brummie Roader Ryan-
there is a difference between the Rooney and Tamas incidents-
whether Tamas made contact accidentally or delibrately,he had his back to Vaughan,in a position where he’s expected to hold off opposing players(in front of his own goal)and the officials didn’t spot any wrong-doing.
In Rooney’s case,he was in the middle of the pitch, and replays showed that he ran towards McCarthy, looked up at him, then swung an elbow into his face,in full view of the Ref.(was it Clattenberg?).
I seem to remember something about no action being taken against Rooney because the Ref. didn’t punish him at the time,so the F.A. claimed they were powerless to act.
Will they say the same about Tamas?
I wouldn’t waste money betting on it.

Amazing that Gallagher suddenly wants to be involved, when we’ve complained about decisions in the past he says he can’t do anything. Post No3 sums it up excellently with the Rooney scenario except we all know that there’s one rule for us and another for the big hitters.
If it was deliberate it would have been so unbelievably stupid that he should never play for the club again. Vaughan was actually coming from behind him and he couldn’t have known exactly where he was, much the same as the Stoke player last week. I think if he does get a ban he’ll have excellent grounds for appeal as proving it was deliberate would be impossible. It also needs Mark Halsey to say he didn’t see it although I’m sure that can be arranged.
On the JT point, he is a bit of a conundrum isn’t he? One week he looks like Willie Johnson trying to beat the full back 2 or 3 times and then another week resembles a maiden aunt that needs to cross a nudist beach but can’t bring herself to do it. With PO and Long in the team I don’t think we miss him as much as we did previously especially away from home.

i’m not gonna make excuses for him, it looks sinister to me. only thing i’ll say in his favour is that it’s out of character for him
as for his performance, some of his errors would have been punished by a better side, though i suppose he wasn’t on his own in that respect so i won’t carson him just yet
Report abuse
The difference with the Rooney incident is that the referee awarded a free kick against Rooney, which meant that nothing could be done after the event. In this case the ref did nothing and therefore Tamas will be banned and deserves it frankly. I am absolutely sure that had Tamas been on the receiving end of the same from the Norwich player, we would be baying for a retrospetive 3 match ban.

CR78
Is it something to do with whether it’s included in the referee’s report as to whether they can act? It seems to undermine the idea of retrospective punishment. I do wonder when these reports are written and how exposed to the media the referees are between the final whistle and the report being constructed.
Halsey can either have no seen it or deemed it accidental. Either way, nobody can determine 100% it was intentional. Like I said earlier though, if it was on purpose he deserves a ban. Examples like that of Rooney just make a mockery of the whole system as he should’ve been banned whether it was in a report or not.
Royley
Your point on Thomas? He’s not going to play well 38 games a season. Lee Dixon made an interesting point on his blog. Norwich play a diamond and push their full-backs on. If you drop Thomas and play Gera/Morrison, are you not affording the opposition the luxury of pushing their full-backs forward fully in the knowledge they won’t be exploited when we get the ball back? At least JT with his very presence forces teams to think twice about abandoning those full-back areas. I still think he brings a dimension we don’t get from anybody else and when fit, is one of the best wingers in that league. Without him and with four neat footballers in the middle, are we not heading back to the Mowbray days?

Or course he meant it, no place for a player that does that in my beloved team, at least we’ll get to see Dawson now…. Tamas you should be ashamed of that act of cowardise

29 Warren-
I think it may have been because a foul was given against Rooney, but the Ref. didn’t produce a card,so the F.A. claimed it couldn’t act any further.
But the video evidence was clearer for that incident than with Tamas,so it just sounds like a very weak excuse to me.
But whoever said things were gonna be fair in the prem.?

Reason why Rooney couldn’t get punished is referee saw incident and logged it in match report. Same goes for foul on dorrans. Tamas however, was not seen or logged on match report so retrospective action could be taken. Also, in my opinion it was a red and a penalty. Glad we won though.
Have to agree with bomber(4).
Would love to give Tamas the benefit of the doubt but the quick look over his left shoulder prior to the incident makes me believe he knew exactly what he was doing. If this is the case he deserves everything he’s got coming to him.
Also Steven Reid didn’t exactly cover himself in glory at both ends of the pitch either. I know we have been on the receiving end of some soft penalty decisions in the past but two wrongs don’t make a right, and the cynical rugby tackle was just plain daft. We could easily have finished the game, like Blackpool last season with 9 men on the pitch and with the shortage of defensive cover could have left us seriously exposed for the next three games.
We have won many plaudits over the last few years for the way we try to play entertaining football so lets leave the thuggery to other teams we could mention.
Warren – Rooney wasn’t punished because the referee saw it and gave a free kick at the time. It’s a similar law to not being able to hand a retrospective red card when the player was booked for an incident.
As for Thomas, he is an enigma and deeply frustrating. He has 5 or 6 games per season where he is practically unplayable – direct, taking players on, getting to the byline or cutting in (I can think of Arsenal away, Wigan and West Ham at home).
The rest of the time, he slows play down and always plays the ball backwards.
Warren makes a god point – could it be related to his physical state?

I have to pick you up on a couple of points,
To my mind to say a defender doesn’t know when an attacker is behind him is saying he not very good at his job.
You mentioned the Stoke goal, are you saying Tamas didn’t know he was there?
I’ve watched it few times and the thing for me is, when you turn you don’t turn with your elbow that high, it’s not a natural movement,IMO he new exactly what he was doing the same as Rooney did,so he ain’t guna get banned,Is he?
As for the second point, you must have been on the vino son! Not in the world of pigs puddin’ could you mention Thomas in the same breath as Willie.

Time for Craig Dawson to be thrown in, he’s as good as Tamas and carries more of a goal threat from corners. Still can’t believe Tamas would do something so stupid and unnecessary, but suspect he will accept guilt to reduce the ban. Anyway, nice to have 3 points on the board. Not our best performance but could easily have scored 3! … penalty should’ve been scored and dorrans v unlucky with his screamer against the post.

No, i don’t think we will be heading back to the Mowbray days. Also, Gera offers much more protection to his fullback.
For someone with so much pace, he slows us down a lot, there were at least 2 occasions yesterday when breaking from defence, he slowed down to a jog. I wish that sucj a tricky and pacey player would take his fullback on, he wouldn’t have to wait long for Odemwingie or Long to catch up. I know he is a winger and most wingers are inconsistent, but one of the best in the league? Either you are a)drunk or b) his agent.
I have also watched it a few times now and im in no doubt at all he meant it,…you see him glance at him the swing his elbow straight in his face!!,..think he needs to accept charge and take 3 game ban as if he contests it it will be longer.
Royley
I’m neither drunk nor his agent and I agree that he sometimes slows play down as I mentioned in an earlier post. However I can’t help think there’s a reason for this, physical condition perhaps?
Either way, for all those games he ‘slows us down’ you can also list games where he’s either won us the game or gone a long way to doing so e.g. Arsenal away, Wigan home, Blackpool home, games where to a large extent, as TB says, he’s unplayable.
There are also other games e.g. Blues and Stoke away, where the opposition’s manager (not us mere mortals) deems his enough of a threat to have 2 players getting cosy with him every time we have the ball thus freeing up space elsewhere.
Redknapp liked him, Wenger says he’s ‘special’. Is he Messi? No. But you tell us 5 wingers in the PL who bring more of an attacking threat in terms of beating players than JT? That’s why I say he’s one of the best.
What you say about Gera is very true and all well and good when we haven’t got the ball. But what about the games we have, where teams sit deep and let us play in front of them? Where we need to turn teams around? Perhaps more at home than away, but those games he’s invaluable, because other than him we have too many midfielders with similar assets in my opinion.

37 Kev,
you’re right, there’s no comparison between JT and Willie Johnson.
If someone gives Jerome stick,he keeps falling down.
If a player gave Willie some stick, the OTHER guy would fall down-flat on his back!
The legend that Willie Johnson was,he’s the only winger I’ve ever seen who’s fists could move faster than his feet.
He could deck the full back AND Referee in one movement-and then score!

1) I’ve mentioned the incident in a couple of posts and said that I can’t decide if it’s deliberate or not but others obviously know more.
2) If you read what I said it was that Tamas didn’t know exactly where the player was not that he didn’t know he was there which is totally different.
3) Likewise I didn’t mean that he was as good as Willie, I rated Willie as even better than Laurie Cunningham. I just meant that he would try to beat a player more than once.

I’d had a few mate so could be wrong, but I think back to their striker getting the wrong side of Tamas and going through only for Ried to cut across and shepherd it out. There was also a wicked cross to the far post in the second half from right in front of the away end, it was in our 6-yard area, their bloke had a run at it, any contact and he’d have scored. Reidy got his head underneath it when I’m not sure a Jones or Jara would. There seemed to be numerous solid headers and blocks. Like I say mate, I’d had a few. There were a few chants of ‘Reidy, Reidy’ both during and at the end of the game so I don’t think I was the only one though.

P.S. When you say out of position, do you mean too narrow? If so, I think this is a feature of Hodgson’s coaching rather than individual’s decision-making. I’ve noticed we sit very narrow when we haven’t got the ball and shuffle across as and when rather than in anticipation. I think sometimes it gets mistaken for the full-backs affording their wide men too much room on the touchline.

Let’s get real, Thomas is a good player, probably better than good in the Championship, but he is not the out and out pacey, tricky winger people like to think he is, nor is his final ball a lot to shout about more often than not. And he has been excellent in maybe 8 or 9 games since we last got promoted, but no more.
As for the Norwich game, I though they looked like we did a few years ago, pretty football with no quality up front, we restricted them to shots from outside the box and they got some crosses in. But I did think that Olsson was tremendous, he stood up to their physicality and, unlike some, kept his head for once.

no idea who you support(although wolves is usually a good bet),but any reason for going ‘over the top’?
1)even if Tamas did deliberately use his elbow,do you really expect his manager to tell the media straight after the game that he thought he was guilty?
I’ve seen many managers quizzed about their players at the end of a match, and almost everytime, like politicians, they defend their own,or avoid the issue.
Sir Alex and Arsene Wenger are experts at ‘seeing nothing wrong’,or just ‘seeing nothing’.
2)’Cynical fouling’?- apart from the Tamas incident, and Reid pulling someone down with him near the end, what else was so noteable?
According to the BBC match report, both Albion and Norwich commited about 10-11 fouls each throughout the entire game.
and 3)Time wasting?- so you’re winning 1-0 away from home, desperate for a win, with 4 minutes of stoppage time to play-
how many clubs do you know that will ‘speed a game up’ in those circumstances?
Seems to me that you either just want a pop at Albion,or you’re very naive about the modern game.
Either way,sort yourself out.

Wenger let him go because he was injured, as did Redknapp. In fact he barely completed a season before we acquired him.
Pennant hasn’t beat a man since he was about 17. Arshavin gets booed by his own fans and does he ever take anyone on? Taarabt, Milner and Nasri aren’t wingers. The Man United players and the likes of Lennon- granted. But they play for top 6 clubs. How many of our competitors have better wingers than Thomas?
Not excellent every game and lacks a final ball, yes perhaps. But if he played well in 38 games and had a final ball, he wouldn’t be playing for us.
I just think he’s a very threatening player for the level we’re at and if we let him go, we have nobody else who can do his job. We’ll have to agree to disagree. Although I agree with what you say about the Norwich game.
