City make move for Owen Hargreaves

Manchester City emerged as the shock new favourites to sign Albion target Owen Hargreaves today.

The big-spending club have reportedly made a surprise move for the out-of-contract former Manchester United midfielder, who was pictured at lunchtime leaving a hospital often used for City medicals.

That could scupper the Baggies’ hopes of landing the 30-year-old, who has also spoken to Tottenham about a move to White Hart Lane.

Albion remain in contact with Hargreaves and were today using to throw in the towel.

But their hopes of signing the former England international, who was offered a Hawthorns contract almost a month ago, appeared to be fading this afternoon with the Premier League’s biggest spenders now seemingly willing to take a chance on his fitness.

Sources in North London claim Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has also made contact with Hargreaves and is considering making an offer to the 30-year-old.

Villa were also linked today with a move for Hargreaves but a contract offer is thought to be unlikely, as boss Alex McLeish believed to be looking for more attacking midfield options.

Albion, meanwhile, have not ruled out a further signing before the summer transfer window closes tomorrow but any new arrivals appear to depend on players leaving.

As usual Albion have not wrapped up a deal that could be a very positive move for the club, we have just advertised how well Hargreaves is progressing etc… Snap him up now. We need to splash some cash on 3 quality players one being a centre half, a quality forward and a right full back Reid is a good player but he is not an out and out right back. I would like to see some loan signings come into the club as well. We have to buy players who are better than we have got on our books already. To be honest James Morrison is a decent player but is far too weak for the type of football that we are playing. We should see some players such as Bednar and Cech leave for cash and one or two of our talented youngsters leave to gain loan experience at other clubs a league or two below. Boing Boing in Roy we trust ….

Whilst I would more than happily welcome Hargreaves to our team I also feel that if we do lose the chance to sign that it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. We have a midfield that I feel can compete in
This league, maybe our main focus should be to get in a quality centre half as it seems that that’s where we are lacking :(. I however feel that if the team work hard under hodgeson and he keeps up his hard work that we will have another good season in this prem league. I have high hopes

Yep, it’s the same old story, it doesn’t take a month to make your mind up, so he is obviously playing silly games with us waiting for a new club to come in for him. Like Steve said, Lukaku is available and he would be a great acquisition, just like we have proved with people like Richardson. It’s early days in the season yet, so I am not disheartened so far, after all if someone was to tell you 4 weeks ago that we would be 2 places above Spurs and 1 point behind Arsenal we’d all be on the edge of our seats. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

As I said last week,we’ve been talking to Hargreaves all summer, but he’s probably just waiting for something to suit HIM,and may only come to us if no else else makes a serious bid.
I would imagine that an offer from a prominent London club is what he’s had in mind all along,so if that is what he wants, then put him in a fast car down to the smoke, and shout ‘good riddance’.

Like I said the other day,we could bend over backwards to get him, then once he’s involved in the physical contact of a ‘proper’ game,he could limp off the pitch and be sidelined for months.

Man. U. are supposed to be the biggest and richest club in the world, which means they could’ve done their own analysis on his condition, but they still had no interest in keeping him,so you wonder what their thinking behind it was?

If he wants to stall for so long, forget him and move on.

Hargreaves has, shrewdly, touted himself around – using clearance by West Bromwich Albion’s renowned medical staff as his calling card. We could not have snapped him up any earlier, Steve (No 3) because he obviously wants to line up as many offers as possible before the deadline. If he joins us (and let’s be blunt, here), it is because a London club or big-spending city club have decided against signing him. I agree with No2. We need a class defender with Prem’ experience more than another midfielder.

Owen has played a blinder here. He is obviously confident in his own fitness and rehab and for that reason would not commit to a baggies deal if others would consider him, and lets face it Spurs being in London will mean that if he does play well then he will be favoured to get into the England squad because he is playing in London. We have done all the legwork here and as you say Steve basically been his agent. There are lessons to be learnt here about how we share our sourcing activities ahead of contracts. Lots of energy and effort have gone into this which was correct and if we had kept this close to our chest then I think we would still be in the box seat. However the balls firmly in his court so if he picks up the phone and says yes then we can get excited again, but for the next 36 hours we should be concentrating on getting in a couple of experienced and class defenders. Surely we have some money to spend ??. Also we should let Bednar go and bring in someone who can not get a kick at the billionaire clubs who collect players like pannini cards! I can not believe there are options we are not persuing still so lets all hope JP/DA and RH can bring in some more new blood.
As an aside thanks to AMS for his comments on BBC WM yesterday remembering that some of us worked the bank holiday !! Cheers :)

I may be considered old fashioned, but I only want to see players in an Albion shirt “if” they want to play for the club. That’s why I’ve no regrets about the exit of Meite and his mouth.

In my opinion it is pointless going on about another cb and a striker now – the club took their decision to limit activities e.g. a little late to review it now or to panic buy.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I’d like to have him, but it’s not the end of the world if we don’t.

It seems that a few people want us to sign a new centre-half,but we’d better forget about Scott Dann, because despite wolves saying they may only bring in a loan player, all the fans are screaming out for the club to pay 5 mil. for the Blues man.

The reason I said forget him is that we just can’t compete-

One wolves fan said- ‘Dann is wanted by ‘newcomers’ QPR,and ‘chicken farmers’ Blackburn,BUT-(wait for it)-

‘surely he would rather come to a TOP TEN club like wolves?’.

    What a shame.

Last week he could have said ‘Surely Dann would want to come to wolves, after all,we are the TOP club in England?’

Let Hargreaves go to Spurs if he wants to, just another example of a selfish money grabbing footballer using a supposedly “smaller” club. I agree a centre half is a priority or give Dawson a run, and i think a left back is more of a priority than a right back. Unfortunately, much that i like him Morrison is not strong enough against the likes of Stoke and it’s surely time for Dorrans to be given a chance now. I wasn’t impressed with Foster either, yes it should have been a foul, but he still should have held the ball and have a bit of bottle !

We narrowly lose to the two best clubs in the country (unlucky late own goal with Man.U.,and a deflected first goal off Olsson for Chelsea),we outplay Stoke for 90 mins.,before the Ref. allows them a goal for a studs showing, high kick towards the ‘keeper, and whaddya know?

As much as i would like Hargreaves, centre midfield is certainly not a priority when looking at our squad. I have said on here before that we need a quality defender and i think all west brom fans would agree with that. However, after sundays match, another key position i think we need is a fast winger who will take people on. If we are going to play 442, which looks likely, we do not have many (good) options out wide. I like Brunt, but he hasn’t played well since he was made captain. (he also needs to be played on the left). I am not a big thomas fan, 95% of the time he is ineffective. Tchoyi couldn’t play wide in a 442, he would leave his full back too exposed. Gera, Morrison or Dorrans are not wingers. I thought we lacked real pace and width Sunday to get behind Stoke so reverted to too many high, straight balls which their defence can deal with all day. If 442 is going to be the way, we need to a winger. Wright-phillips would be ideal but he will go elsewhere for big wages. Any suggestions?

I think that Hargreaves is doing what nearly every single player would do in the same situation. He is looking after his own best interests. Why can you blame him for doing that? Our club have made efforts to get him and unless we offer him ridiculous money I feel that we were always going to be used to ‘big him up’ and then he will see what offers are on the table. I do not feel that, as a club, we could have done anymore. I feel that he is doing what I or many of you would be doing.
The possible Dann transfer to Blackburn is an interesting one and would appear good value for £5m. I for one wouldn’t object to a late bid for him as I feel that defence is the only position that we do not have any real depth.
Some of the negative vibes being spouted really would be better served for the Dingles pages. For Christ sake, we have played 3 games including Man U, Chelsea and the biggest bogey side ever to ‘grace’ the planet. How many points did you all expect?
If after the next three games we still have no points, perhaps raise a comment or two then but the season is early and I see no reason to be negative. We have an improved squad to last year and one of the best managers in the league. Come on You Baggies.

One point on OH not mentioned here is that as a free agent he is not bound by the transfer window. As such he can wait until the middle of next week to accept any offers as he won’t miss a kick of training due to the internationals.
Only JP/DA will know the maths involved but surely if we can get an offer to even interest Hargreaves we can match that for Dann – a player in a position we evidently need.
We have been screaming to get the back 4 improved all summer and I still am not that confident that we have improved in this area over the summer in terms of personnel. Jones and McAuley haven’t featured in the prem yet. We can’t judge them yet. Ibanez hasn’t settled at all much like Valero and we should look to move him on with our blessing.

In midfield Hargreaves has used us. He’s not the first player to taut himself in this way. I know we have a good record but Spurs kept Ledley King fit and playing well when in the team over the last few years and we all know the FA don’t often look to the smaller teams to pick the national team. Face it folkes he ain’t coming. Dorrans is back now and Gera is now available and that should add some quality to the squad. Can’t see any more coming in here.

Up Front; Bednar and Fortune for me are not good enough at this level anymore – time to sell or loan out and bring in some others who are better and hungry. Long and Cox and even Tchoyi show promise and PO is coming back in september. Is Chris Wood staying on loan at blues only a few of my mates reckon he’s done well. Perhaps extend that until Jan and then review.

However under Roy we do look more compact and organised. I’m not dissatisfied with Long, Foster, Gera, McAuley, Jones and Fulop as transfer activity. Perhaps getting some more of the players not in the squad of 25 out will happen when the loan market re-opens. There will be players in the next 24 hours at other clubs for who this will become a reality to them too – as TJS says – perhaps if the price is right we can get some experience in.
We must remember that Roy has asked to be backed and he has been. He is also still establishing his methods and ways. We still have Dawson, Thorne, Mantom to name but 3 that have promise coming through. Perhaps Roy will give them a shout.
    Onwards and upwards.

Can’t really blame him for keeping his options open, he’s 30 so this may be the last contract of his stop-start career so he has to make sure it’s right for him. After all we are talking about one of the best midfielders in the country when fit which according to our brief medical he is.

I’m very happy with our transfer dealings since the window opened…BUT we still have the same back 4 as last year which with the way we play are not quite good enough. A CB to go along with Olsson was a must and I’m not sure McAuley is going to be the key. I hope he gets a start against Norwich and Swansea if only so we get to see how he and Olsson play together.

Very suprised about the Dann to Blackburn story. I know there’s no way we would spend another £5m but it would be great if we could. Hargreaves would be a wonderful addition to our midfield but as Warren and others have stated, not essential nor a priority. Another centre back and/or full back is. While we look far more compact than last year, our defenders are prone to individual errors. Any one of them, which means at least one mistake per game.

Dann would be an excellent addition. At 5m a bargain. Seeing as we’ve had a net spend in the region of 2m, this seems within our reach. I will be extremely disappointed if he goes to Blackburn for that amount and we don’t put in a bid.

He left United a wealthy man and without the need to employ an agent to find him a new club as he does not believe in giving his money away when he can manage his own interests. He may be right of course but what a way to repay the United fans who supported him through thick and thin. Sounds to me that he’s a bad un.

I hear he wants to be part of Euro 2012. If thats the case City is a bad move move as he
won’t play enough games. If money isn’t his main priority we are still his best chance to play regular first team football.

Only 3 games gone plenty of time left to put thing right Albion. The next three games are winnable for the Albion if Peter O plays. You need to score goals to get anything with your defensive record. No clean sheets in how many game 1 in 40.

The difference between Man City’s offer and Albion’s is that City will take the ‘l’ out of “play more” ….

As we knew all along Mr Hargreaves was only using us to get a better deal else where. No body else was interested in Mr Hargreaves till our top fitness and medical staff assessed his condition and pronounced him fit enough to be able to continue to play in the premier league. I presumed we sent him for more thourough examinations just to confirm what our staff had already discovered. I just hope Mr Peace sends him a huge bill for all our time, effort and facillities he’s had the use of, and then issues a him with a writ for misrepresentation and wasting our time. I just hope he likes sitting on a subs bench, because thats all he’ll be doing at city.

How dissapointing. He would’ve been a good player for us if he truly wanted to play football. I guess I was wrong about Hargreaves. If he does go to City or Spurs he won’t get a game and he will evidently be going for the pay cheque. If he goes to Villa then he will be going to play.

He has used the club to his own ends and that type of ‘commitment’ is best left to the ‘bigger’ clubs. He would’ve been a nice signing but not an essential one.

I hope we are still in for a centre half because it seems Olsson and Tamas are still our first choice in that area. The plain fact of the matter is that Tamas is great back up but he is not good enough to hold that position on a regular basis.

24- JT! I think Shirley baggie was thinking about a winger that could knock a ball round a full back, not just boot it at him every time! Also one that scored more than 3 goals a season would be good.

37- absolutely agree, maybe our recent dealings with Blues could give us an advantage in negotiations as well?

Agree with most comments posted on this subject.
He has used us a selling point for himself and for sell promotion.
But he was a massive gamble anyway in a position on the field we are at our strongest..
But on the other hand if City are offering a contract then you cant really blame him in his personal circumstance, if it goes peared shaped they can afford the “loss” financially.

I think we should be looking elsewhere for players especially centre half/possible winger..?/

Centre half Dann,,seems 5 million very cheap? If correct surely Arsenal etc would be odds on fav..Haagelan from Fulham? Onuhra Man city?

Wingers..Gradel Leeds…Kebe Reading..long shot Johnson at Man City?? Who knows they not keen on selling or loaning to top 6??

And up front not sure if we are strong enough especially with PO injured freq…
    Bellamy,Johnson(Fulham),Sturridge..????

Oh and its only 3 games in Roy,JP,DA I certainly trust..

    54 Dawlish Baggie-

just thought I’d mention I’m coming down your place for a week from friday.

    I don’t actually mean your home,so don’t worry,I won’t upset the neighbours.

There’s a decent pub at the back of the town (opp. a chinese takeaway-can’t remember the name of it)that shows sky football on a floor to ceiling screen, lot’s of quite smart wood effects in there, and fuller’s ESB on draught(6%+ vol.).

As I haven’t got a clue what England are doing,I’ll probably watch Scotland there saturday afternoon (for GD and Jimmy?),so if you happen to be passing,I’ll buy you a beer.

If you do accept the invite, you won’t have a problem spotting me-

If it’s allowed,I’ll be wearing a Baggies shirt and a sporran.

In colours of the ancient McRocket tribe.

(Actually,I just want a witness to prove to Lone Wolf that I’m not in Brighton).

p.s.-I did think about wearing a kilt, but I remember it can be quite open along the coast,so I don’t want to risk giving some nice old lady an heart attack if there’s a sudden gust of wind.

I read it in a tabloid newspaper so I wouldn#t take it as gospel, but apparently Hargreaved offered to stay on at United without a wage such was his desperation to repay them. Just because he has been in talks with City, it does not necessarily mean he will sign. Obviously the money is there but if he was being even slightly honest in what he has been saying about getting games then at the stage of his career he is in City could be a suicidal. I am more concerned with Spurs interest to be honest, though as others have said, it’s not the end of the world if we don’t sign him.

RIC – I sat next to someone like you in school, he used to put his forename and surname in the wrong boxes in exams and picked his nose alot, but strangely thought he knew a lot about football, being a passionate United fan… we offered Hargreaves a contract a month ago, what else do you expect to happen?

as I’ll probably watch the Scotland game in public (hopefully including Albion players in the line-up),I thought- why not be Scottish for the day?

So as I say,it’s the McRocket tribe colours,Andy Murray is the greatest, and long live both King Kenny and Mel Gibson(?).

And just to be really authentic,I’m now going to add the final piece-

practice being as miserable as sin.

p.s.- as TMH sits not far from me,here’s hoping!
