Odemwingie speaks out on deal talks

Peter Odemwingie today broke his silence on his Albion contract talks and told his Twitter followers he will only leave the Hawthorns for a ‘top’ club.

The Nigeria international also claimed discussions have stalled over the length of his new deal and not over wages.

Odemwingie has not penned a contract extension despite a summer of negotiations, leading to increasing speculation about interest from other clubs.

But the striker today used his Twitter account to reassure Baggies fans he does not want to leave.

He tweeted: “To my dear WBA supporters. I love this club and will leave only to a TOP team which is understandable. Nothing abnormal is going on.

“Contract is not signed because of the duration of it. Figures agreed long time ago because I know this is not Real Madrid. Please be patient.”

Wigan have already had a bid of around £4million rejected for Odemwingie and are expected to return with an improved offer.

But his comments today appears to rule out the Latics, while the Baggies have had no contact from other clubs despite speculation about interest from Tottenham and Newcastle.

The 30-year-old also tweeted an update on his fitness and hinted that he could return for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea.

Odemwingie was sidelined for Sunday’s Premier League opener against Manchester United at the Hawthorns with the ankle injury picked up in the pre-season win at Bristol City.

He tweeted: “Started running today. Optimistic – me says I’ll be OK for saturday with magic from the doctor. Realistic me says – balance both.”

I do hope we have learned from our mistake with Kevin Phillips, who wanted a two year contract instead of the one we offered. I am still convinced that had we kept Kevin, his six or seven key goals would have kept us up in 2008-2009. Peter wants three years instead of two. His goals can keep us up this season – worth tens of millions.

For me this is a clever way to take the heat off him and put the pressure firmly back on the club. Depending on the length of contract he wants if it’s 3 or 4 years i would personally give it to him as other people have stated on here, i hope we have learnt our lesson from Super Kevin Phillips. I can see both sides of this, at least in a round about way it’s not a financial problem which is encouraging if it’s just the length of deal surely a compromise can be reached. We all want him to stay so sort it out please.

How much effort did it take for someone to say, “It isn’t about money, it’s about length of contract”. I don’t know what you are doing in Denmark about cash, but here the fiddling goes on from MPs, bankers, F.A., Old Uncle Tom Cobleigh and all. Except US. The poor sods who work, or have worked all our lives, paid our taxes and somehow find hundreds of pounds to watch football. Greed here raises the hackles of every ordinary man and woman. We get nasty. Now, St.Peter says it isn’t about cash. Straight from the horses mouth. Sign him up! All is forgiven, especially as there was nothing to forgive.

The more I think about Peter’s position the more I support him.

If the only sticking point is the length of the new contract I agree that he should get an extension because we need to remember he only has ONE year left and then a further year option in the clubs favour – so he is only guaranteed one more year.

If he were to get injured this season or have a real stinker he could be left without a club in 12 months and at 31 it could be hard to find a decent move. If he wants two years plus a year option for the club I think thats appropriate.

JP will be looking to safeguard the clubs position (bless him) but PO needs a little more than one guaranteed season in his pocket – I know I would.

I feel sure that if Roy wants him signed up and the money is already agreed that the deal will be done pretty soon.
