Peter Odemwingie Wigan bid blasted

Albion boss Roy Hodgson today blasted Wigan’s “ludicrous” bid for Peter Odemwingie – as the striker began a race to be fit for the Baggies’ trip to Chelsea.

The head coach again insisted Odemwingie is not for sale and labelled the Latics’ shock bid for the Nigeria international on Friday night as laughable.

Wigan are thought to have offered less than £4million for Odemwingie, who sat out yesterday’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United with an ankle injury.

And Hodgson said: “Peter’s not for sale and, if you had have seen the size of the bid you would probably have been laughing all the way out of here.

“I don’t understand what provokes teams to put in bids which are obviously so ludicrously far away from what the player’s value is.

“I suppose I could put a bid in for Wayne Rooney today. I’m sure Sir Alex Ferguson would laugh it out of existence, just as we laughed at Wigan’s bid.”

Odemwingie is set for fresh talks on a new contract this week, amid reports today of interest from Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp.

But Albion are determined not to sell the 30-year-old, who is effectively contracted to the club for another two years and culd return to action in Saturday’s game at Chelsea.

Another Baggies striker, Ishmael Miller, was due to complete his £1.2million move to Nottingham Forest today, while Albion are planning more talks with former England and United midfielder Owen Hargreaves.

Yes if we offered a stupid amount for Rooney it would be laughed at as not serious – but what if Barca or Man City put a small bid in ?? Because the clubs are of a similar size the bid but be seen as trouble making and Fergie would have FIFA involved…..

Can’t wait to see PO and either Long or Tchoi ripping the prem up this season !!!

i think a few wolves fans would be happy if we sold him, if a bid of 10 million came in then yes but only if a replacment striker was bought in straight away and we could bid for javis too :)

I think that if a deal was negotiated correctly then we may possibly get £5-£6m for a player that may hit ten goals.

We could then go and sign a younger version who would get double figures. Wolves did this with Fletcher.

What a pathetic bid by Wigan. Hope they get relegated this year: poor team, poor stadium & a poor fanbase.Odemwingie is probably worth 5-6 million but that’s only because he’s 30. If he was 25 he’d be worth at least 10 mill easy. Great player. Good luck this year baggies. Hope we can both push for a top half finish!!

7.baggie boy, wouldn`t want fletcher, not bad in the air but thats it. Odemwingie is 2 footed, quick as anything and gets loads of assists as well as goals. I`d only sell if the bid was 25m, and if thats not going to happen then let him see out his 2 years and then he can go for nothing with our blessing.

I think I have sussed this one, according to Sky Ish has just gone to Forest for an “INITIAL” 1.2 mill, perhaps this is who they thought they were going for with this 1.5 mill bid? bit like the Yank who thought he was buying Tower Bridge, rather than London Bridge!

I’m sorry I thought this was an Albion story??

This probably highlights how much of a threat the Wolves fan see him as that they feel so compelled to comment and even more comically compare him with Fletcher!!

It’s important to separate the fact from fiction:

PO is under contract and will remain an Albion player until we say otherwise; and

Nowhere has he said he’s unhappy, that he wants to leave and financially we don’t need to sell.

To some extent he’d be difficult to replace, so personally I don’t think a bid of less than silly money would persuade us to let him go.

PO’s agent will be the one conducting negotiations, trying to get the best deal for his client. During which time, bits of speculation are par for the course.

In truth, only DA, PO, PO’s agent and HillBilly (post no.2) know what’s happening.

I’m sure we’ll get this tied up soon.

I think there are two points here.

He might be worth £6 mill to Spurs but he’s worth a lot more to us because of what a replacement would cost. And as he’s got two years left on his contract we have the whip hand.

As a follow on to this because of his age it’s not like Nasri who can threaten to sit tight and go on a Bosman. He can sit tight on the wages he’s on and there’s nothing we can do about it but in two years he’ll be a 32 year old striker.

JP is not known for kow towing to other chairmen or players. He may go but it will be for a price of our choosing, not Spurs or Newcastle’s and certainly not Wigan’s (are they getting confused with the fees Rugby League players go for?)

9.dekker. I’d take Fletcher off the Wulfies, no problem. When you buy a goalscorer, look for one who gets the 1-1 equaliser when you play badly, not the guy who gets numbers 4 and 5 in a 5-0 win. Fletcher may well score more than Doyle this year.

Personally I feel that a decent size bid we will let him go to maximise the sale value. 6-10 Million would be good. Scoring even without odemwingie is not a problem. Long & Cox are both better finishers than wingie. I’d like to keep him but if we get the right price then sell, especially if we use part of the money to fund a move gor defenders

To be fair to the Albion if 50k is on the table that should be our final offer. He can’t hold the club to randsom. But you can’t blame him or his agent – they are just playing the game like everyone else in Fantasy football land. It may seem unethical to the ‘fan’ but if you or I was in their shoes you’d wait and see if anything worthwhile develops. Once the transfer window slams shut he’ll sign that deal if nothing is doing. Either way you look at it PO is under contract for 2 years. I honestly believe though the club will get this sorted unless he has asked for a ridiculous ammount which wouldn’t be in line with our budget. I believe that he should be on par with the top earners at our club but we shouldn’t break the bank for him. I think this is where his character will come to the surface, is it all about the money or will he show a little loyalty to a club that plucked him from a personal hell in Russia and is adored by the fans and given him the platform to suceed. Yes he has played his part and is a top player imo but where do we draw the line? We arn’t a club that can compete with the bigger clubs with a bigger budget we are a well run club who won’t go into financial meltdown and do a Portsmouth or a Leeds. PO has got to work out what is important, i should imagine he is a wealthy guy already, is he purely motivated by money or does he want to move to a club where he could potentially be warming the bench on more money? I honestly believe a compromise can be reached and think it will in the coming weeks. Come on Peter we love you, don’t let the greed kill that.

Perspective time, Odemwingie is worth what the board of West Bromwich Albion deem acceptable as a transfer fee for him.

Wages wise he is worth a week exactly what the board of West Bromwich Albion believe is fair increase in his wages.

Your problem is going to be if another club offers a crazy amount in wages for him. Like Chelsea have offered Modric.

But at the end of the day he is under contract for another two seasons so do what Tottenham have done with Modric.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head that a lot of our fans seem to have missed. If he doesn’t sign a new contract it doesn’t mean we have to sell him.

If he doesn’t sign and we keep him another two years, on the drawn from thin air figures of £20 grand he’s on and £40 grand a week on offer and he will lose £2 million. He’ll then be 32 and I doubt anyone will be offering enough wages for him to retrieve his £2 mill.

He could go on strike but A) I don’t think he’s the type. B) JP is a tough cookie and may just call his bluff. The other scenario is that Spurs could make us an offer we can’t refuse, in which case we take it from there.

Hall Green makes a very good point, why keep delaying things indefinitely. The problem Peter has if he tries to engineer a move is that he has another 2 years on his contract.

While it can be counter productive to keep unhappy players at a club, it can put teams off to see a player causing trouble at another club, so Peter – and particularly his agent should remember that.

We’ve got enough attacking options without him now, and we all know Mr Peace will be wanting to sell soon to cover actually spending some money. So why not get him for the maximum price. At the end of the day he is soon to be 31 and who knows if last year was a one off, defenders are going to be wise to him now. What he did for us last season won’t be forgotten, but 8 mil is good business.

He’ll see sense and sign, regardless of his agent. Let’s face it, even after a player signs a new contract, if say Spurs came in and offered £10million for him, then he’d probably go even though the ink was still wet. If, like us, he saw that Shane Long has come to play, Tchoyi gets that ‘old black magic’ feeling, Cox gets a run and scores a few, he’ll see the need to be part of that.
Has anyone done what I did with Man.U.’s first goal? You may think, as I did, that the winger was offside when the ball was played to him. He then gets the ball and steps back onside as our defenders also play him ‘on’. I know the linesman has to make a quick decision, but they did get a few wrong.
