Simon Cox vows to improve at Albion

Simon Cox has admitted he must still improve to nail down a place in the Albion team – despite becoming the club’s leading scorer in pre-season.

The striker has followed up an impressive end to last season by netting three times so far in warm-up games, including both goals in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw at Southampton.

But Cox, who has been restored to his favoured forward role since boss Roy Hodgson’s arrival in February, admitted he still has work to do.

The 24-year-old said: “I was delighted to get two goals on Wednesday but I thought my overall performance was pretty average.

“I thought my personal performance was lacking in sharpness and my hold-up play just wasn’t good enough. I’ll take the goals like any striker would but, after that performance, I definitely need to work on my hold-up play.

“You know it’s your night if the goalkeeper drops them like he did for the first one, but you have to be there to score and you get rewarded for making a long run into the box to get that bit of luck.

“I will take that but, overall, I wasn’t overly satisfied with what I did.”

cox is one to look out for next season, i dont know why we are being linked with long as cox is keeping him out of the Ireland team, and i think is a much better player, DJ Cambell would be a good signing for £1.25mill, as back up for super pete

Inside man I’m glad you have first hand evidence of Ben Foster at the Albion, however did you mean a striker was your top priority or you know that it’s west Broms top priority?

It’s refreshing to read from a player that he’s working hard on his game. It is a huge step in from Div.1 to Prem, but this man will make it. My prediction, if he gets the games,
    10 goals this season.

    Give Cox a Chance.

Coxy has all the attributes to make him a true Albion man. Non-stop effort and work-rate, a sharpness in front of goal, a desire to improve and genuine modesty. I agree with No 7, If we played Cox as regularly as Reading did with Long – and in his true position – he would have scored plenty.

Anyone else think we could do with a pacey winger who can get at defenders? Other than Thomas we have no one, hope the link to Jamie Murphy from Motherwell is true. Hope we sign Ridgewell too, would be a good signing as he can cover CB or LB, and is it me or is the Foster situation dragging on a bit? Im impatient as you can tell , boing boing!

Agree on DJ Cambell, but i would also look at Nicky Maynard at Bristol City, He has a great record at Bristol and he could be brought for less than half the fee of Long. He also has plenty of pace which we will need up top when Odem goes to the ACN.

    8) Thing is what if it wasnt? how daft would we feel then? if the 1.25 figure is any where near the real mark we have to go for it, especially when we are considering Long who has never done it (in the Prem) for 6 times as much, its a real no brainer. Take a look at the list of last Seasons Prems top scorers, imagine the prices they would fetch, then tell me what we are waiting for?

    1) Berbatov 20
    2) Tevez 20

    JP Speaks.

Just thought i would speak on behalf of our loyal fans to keep you updated on the situation regarding incoming players.
Ben Foster should be signing in the next week providing we can get him as cheap as possible.
Er i meam come to a suitable loan agreement with his parent club.
I have read some of your comments about who you would like myself and the board to sign with great amusement. Wonderful sense of humour our fans have, but i am afraid the cheque book will be closed.
After paying Oddemthingy and Mulumbawumba (never remember the names of our foreign lot), obscene amounts of money, the lid is now closed on the biscuit tin.
    Thankyou my loyal subjects.

Someone I’m surprised with have not been linked with and yet I feel would enhance the squad and has proven he can do it is Craig Bellamy, I wonder what MC would let him go for, he’s obviously not being looked at as part of the MC squad and surely he hasn’t got long left on his contract, he’s also got the pace to to fill in on the wing if required. Any thoughts??

p.s. Campbell has signed for QPR for 1.25 mill

If Carew joins West Ham as has been suggsted then I wouldn’t be suprised or upset to see Carlton Cole coming this way – I know I’ve mentioned this a few times over the past few weeks but I see him and PO as possibly forming a really effective partnership.

p.s – on my dark side watch I noticed on the Stearman thread that LW (post 58) is furious about “tesco’s in disguise” posting over there. I have posted a reply but don’t expect it to get through….

23Sid. Big Cyrille was not a prolific goal scorer, slightly less than 1 in 3 I think, but he did score prolific goals that set the crowd on fire and inspired the rest of the team. There again, the 1 in 2 men are like rocking horse droppings, very rare.
Dr.Foster went to Gloucester, in a shower of rain, he fell in a puddle right up to his middle and never went there again.

This is taking much too long. I don’t argue that JP does a good job but if Foster is snatched from under our noses we all know where the blame will lie.

Keeper is a key position and as he is the best available why can’t we just sign him.

So Foster is on loan for the season. Releived that the deal is done and that we have a real Prem keeper between the sticks for next term (Myhill is of course good but pre season tells it’s own story, time for new blood).

I am a little dissapointed that this is not with a view to a permanent deal should we stay up. Basically if he has a good season with us, Blues could hold us to ransom or flog him to some of the big time charlies. I hope this is just early days reporting and actually talks are ongoing on that one.

DJ Campbell or Roque SC for me. Bellemy found it hard going in the Championship last season and Long is overpriced. Roque has something to prove and DJ is a snip and has twice the scoring tally in this league than Long.

In the past while knowing the bias of the E&S and it’s moderators I must say that they have been pretty fair with my posts, even at times editing them in order to allow them through, but their bias has reached new heights over recent weeks.
While it’s a waste of time too ask why I’ll give a couple of examples, what’s wrong with referring to someone as Mr Richard Head? also sometimes you are allowed to accuse people of working for Barclay’s Bank but sometimes not,Mi no entendre!
Today they’ve reached new heights, after a delayed announcement of the signing of Ben Foster they even refuse to let us comment, can you imagine the coverage if the Dingle’s had singed him?
