Albion set to seal Ben Foster signing

Albion were today poised to complete the signing of Ben Foster as their goalkeeper hunt neared its conclusion.

The Baggies are close to finalising deals with Foster and Birmingham and the transfer could even be completed later today.

The 28-year-old is set to move to the Hawthorns initially on loan, but the transfer is likely to become permanent next summer in a deal worth around £4million.

The former England international will become Roy Hodgson’s new No 1 in a significant coup for Albion, who sold previous goalkeeper Scott Carson to Turkish club Bursaspor earlier this month.

The Baggies considered a host of alternative targets, most notably West Ham’s Robert Green, but top target Foster leapt back to the head of the list when the extent of Blues’ financial problems became clear.

St Andrew’s officials are anxious to get his £1.5million annual salary off their books.

Strengthen our back line just what we needed. We all have blue nose friends im sure and they will be sad to see him go.
I have heard nothing but good reports about his attitude etc. not sure about his 1.5 mill yearly sallery though.

It’s taken a long time and still has to be confirmed by the clubs but once again our chairman has demonstrated how astute he is.
The situation with Shaun Long mystifies me. On one hand you have West Ham which supposedly has financial problems making a bid higher than ours and appears to be close to what Reading want but they have rejected the bid on the basis that they want him to move to Premier club. Our lower bid has also been rejected but I wonder if Reading would prefer to do business with a club more likely to meet it’s financial commitment. Lets leave Mr Peace to unravel the mystery.

The team at Rochdale didn’t do to well last night but they were the kids mainly:- only Reid and Bednar really could claim to have great expectations of being in the final 25 squad.
Rochdale put out their first team and their experience proved to much.

More interested in the game at St Mary’s tonight and at Ashton Gate on Saturday.

Moving on from Foster to Long Read this comment from a Reading forum. Didn’t realise that SL only has 1 year left on his contract.

“LONG scored 21 goals last season but that is his job nothing special and there were a few penalties. This is the only season he has done this and it has to be said it was from Xmas onwards, prior to that people were calling for him to be axed. Previous seasons he only managed around 12 goals or less but now all of a sudden he is the best striker in the league. Yes he is an international player but not first choice. Sell him now or for free in 12 months, i know what i would do and i can pretty much guess what the club will do… There is no gaurantee LONG will score 20 goals + this season and as that is what fans will expect, they will soon be on his back if he fails to do so. Does it matter who he is sold to ? not really because … This is about money and getting the right price, IMO £8 million is very good!”

On this basis even the 5 million already allegedly offered by West Ham would be good for Reading. I would be surprised if we will break our transfer record on Long given this.

Another graphic example of what happens when a club’s owners lets ambition run wild.
Their inability to fund the huge losses incurred by relegation will cost them dear. And when the chairman fails the ‘fit and proper person’ parameters, and his dodgy money is removed from the equation, administration looms…
Strange that the only 2 Greed League clubs that seem to be approaching financial matters with the correct level of caution are here in the BC.

    Is it because…

    1. You don’t have the loot. (£4m) snigger!

    2. He does’t want to commit himself to a serious contract with WBA ( wait and see if a better offer/club comes along)

    3. Peace doesn’t want to commit him to a long term contract, because he would be happy if Albion went down again and knows he couldn’t pay him his terms when, h-erm sorry, if, you get relegated)

I myself have been a critic of JP in the past but i will happily admit that i was wrong and over the past few seasons he has demonstrated just what a clever man he is. Ok it’s very frustrating at times but we very rarely leave ourselves financially exposed and we inveriably get our man on our terms. If this happens i believe JP deserves an enormous ammount of credit, Englands best goalkeeper for 4M, job well done, keep up the good work.

considering Albion paid 2 mil. for Peter O.,and the figures flying around suggest Long would cost at least 8 mil.,plus salary, probably totaling 10 mil.+,what are the chances of JP forking out that much for a championship player who averages 1 goal per 4 games (outside the prem.) ?

I would say to Reading ‘If he played for another championship club, and you wanted him, what would be YOUR honest valuation of him?’.

Odds are if Liverpool are looking, that’s where Long will be heading. No problem! I don’t think he was the player Roy wanted anyway.
    How about this….
With everyone fit and well, our bench last season usually contained amongst others Fortune and Vela, and more often than not it was Fortune who got the call.
There has been alot of paper talk about Andy Johnson and Shane Long but these two are in the Vela mould. Could it not be that Roy’s main target is a big man up front?
To our surprise he had Bednar back when we all thought he’d be released, maybe this was to have a good look at him?
No! I think he’s after a big man so who could it be?

    1. Obviously, any Greed League club has the money.

    2. If you had bothered to observe JP’s modus operandi, over the last 4 years, you would have known that loans (with watertight permanent deals to follow) are one of his chosen methods of buying/selling. Bloose will have 0% chance of ‘moving the goalposts’.
Could it be that you are too dense to notice this, or did your goldfish memory let this knowledge erode?
    3. Every player at the Albion has a contract which would drastically reduce their GL wages. Only clowns like Blues (and West Ham) don’t cater for the relegation threat. Wolves have such measures too, and look how close you came to invoking these clauses last season. Snigger.

i.e. if we get relegated and JP believes he will be too expensive to keep in teh championship then I’m sure the deal will not be enforced. Other than that I’m sure we sign him for the agreed anmount this summer whether he has a good season or not and whether Blues could potentially get a better price from a different club.

Likewise tonight’s squad keeps being described as a strong Albion line-up yet apart from GD who was injured for most of the season and Simon Cox who forced his way in at the end of the season none could be described as anything like regular first teamers. Four Myhill, Cech, Ibanez and Fortune were regularly on the bench and the rest are youngsters or the likes of Mattock and Miller that were out on loan so how does that make it a ‘strong first team line-up?’

Everything crossed and hoping we don’t get gazumped at the last minute. He is the best option for us by far. Green would be good but Foster is by far the best English keeper next to Joe Hart.

I still think the defence needs shoring up and of course we need a striker so we don’t have to worry if PO misses a game, but so far (touch wood) the management seem to have everything in hand.

To Lone Wolf…..1: why are you taking your time to comment on an Albion signing?? Focus your attention on your Dingles & 2: We haven’t borrowed Foster, cause the deal is we buy him end the end of the season, it would be borrowing if we sent him back to Blues at the end of the season (you fool) your Wolverhampton brain clearly shows with that stupid statement! Anyway, focusing on MY football team, great signing by the Albion, quality replacement for Carson & shows the Baggies wanna make a good go of our 2nd season in the Prem :) not to sure about Long though..5 goals in the Prem for Reading, surely we could push the boat out for Sturridge on loan. If Hargreaves stays fit, he will be a great addition to the squad. With our medical team that got Thomas & Barnes back playing regular football, hopefully they can do the same with Owen.

I really hope your a dingle having a laugh. If your for real it’s a little worrying. We really do need this deal to go through.

Signing Foster could be the foundation stone we need to secure ourselves as an established Prem side. It may take a couple of years but if we do it without the foreign sugar daddy and massive loan then we will surely be the the only example of ‘how it should be done’ in the country.

Wulfies will argue it’s them but without Jack, Morgan and us (giving them Bull), they would either not be in the football league or called the Telford Ers.

Come on lads, lets get Foster’s signature.

Ridgewell- I wouldn’t be against it. He seems quite solid if not spectacular, and versatile. With his experience at this level it seems a fair price. Re: pace- it did strike me that towards the end of the season, Roy had his defensive and midfield banks quite deep and close together, especially away from home. We’ve seen down the road that even Jody Craddock can get away with having the turning speed of a dumper truck if there are enough players close enough to him and no space behind!! I say go for it!! Warren,

You may need to lie down but i actually agree with you! Shocker i know but you make a fair point about how deep we play and of course Craddock turning like the QE2! I think Tamas has actually been unlucky, he suffered from a lack of form and it cost him dear. I actually think he is a good footballer if not a great defender if that makes any sense? As for Cech i think he is more suited to midfield his positional sense is questionable and better going forward than defending IMO.

Pace isn’t everything, even in these wild and woolly modern times. Show me a defender who can ‘READ’ a game and he doesn’t get into trouble in the first place. Timing is far more important. Add Balance to those two and you have a Bobby Moore, a Jack Vernon, even a Paddy Mulligan! Very often, a defensive ‘pair’ is what the manager looks for. I don’t recall John Wile and Ally Robertson being that quick or even that brilliant alone, but as a pair, would you have liked to face them?

This is getting silly now, but I agree with you too.

Tamas seems to have been an unfortunate victim of our transition under Roy, who clearly doesn’t fancy him. Cech- am with you too, he’s fills me with dread at left-back, nowhere near consistent, assured or reliable enough for that role.

Sorry but on that night I’m seeing a lady in Manchester who says her husband doesn’t understand her. I met her through this site actually after I’d cast doubt on her existence.

She says her husband has a few worrying habits. He goes out in his own team’s shirt but insists on wearing the shirt of their deadly rivals underneath. She is also certain that he’s seeing another woman as he often comes home with long blonde hairs on his clothes and glitter on his shoulder (she joked the other day that if she didn’t know better she’d swear blind he was having an affair with Noddy Holder.)

She’s promised me a night I’ll never forget as her husband is out and told me not to worry about bringing an air pump.
