Albion record contract for Mulumbu

Albion midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu has committed his future to the Baggies by signing the most lucrative contract in the club’s history.

The reigning Player of the Year has penned a three-year deal with an extra year’s option that could be worth more than £6million.

It’s Mulumbu’s third new deal in just 13 months and follows a summer of negotiations, amid speculation over potential interest from clubs across Europe, including Italian side Fiorentina.

Head coach Roy Hodgson said: “It is great that Youssouf has been rewarded for his efforts last season and that we have been able to persuade him that his future lies with West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League.

“We’re looking forward to seeing him build on his success of being named Player of the Year and trying to confirm it again this season.”

Mulumbu, who joined Albion for just £150,000 from Paris Saint Germain in 2009, proved a revelation last season in his first full Premier League campaign.

The new deal, believed to be worth more than £30,000 per week, will put him on a par with the club’s highest earners.

Mind boggling figures – never thought I would see numbers like 6 million pound contracts mentioned at the albion… but in these days of flash Harry players its great to see a hard working, unassuming player like Youssouf getting well rewarded.

I hope the likes of Dorrens, Brunty etc look at this and realise that the club WILL look after them – if they give 100% every game.

He is a great advert for the game – well done !!

    Great news.

I’m sure if a top-four club was to come in or we got relegated (the former being more likely than the latter) then he may well leave regardless of contract, but at least it’d be on our terms so good business by the club. This and hopefully PO signing will give RH a good crack at giving us a very decent year or two.

Just a side point. Laymans terms- £6m over 3 years divided by 3 = £2m a year. If we have another 24 players on an average of just two-thirds of his wage then that’s over £30m a year. Our entire turnover’s about £40-50m. ‘Where’s the money gone?’ brigade take not before demanding we spend £20-30m every year on fees alone…….

Fantastic news and what a great statement of intent by the club, retaining and rewarding our best players accordingly.

I must admit I was a little concerned a couple of weeks ago when news broke of Michael Essien’s long term injury. My immediate thought was Chelsea may come sniffing around looking to Mulumbu as a ready-made replacement. That’s how highly I rate the guy. This may still happen in the near future but as Warren (13) says, at least it will be on our terms so well done again JP.

Now St. Peter, see this action as a milestone by the club and sign your new contract. You know it makes sense.

I think a lot of the problem with Foster is this loan depending on whether Blues come back up or not. What happens if they don’t but he has a fantastic season with us? Do Blues retain the right to then sell him elsewhere.

All of this will lead to a very complicated contract which I’m sure Foster’s advisors will also want some input. I think JP will only agree if we get a first option to buy at a price agreed now. It’s all a bit messy.

Regarding Shane Long. Reading have stated they won’t sell him to another Championship club so I’m not sure how the West Ham move works unless they’ve changed their minds. This apparent £5 or £8 mill pound offer is from the same club that offered £4 mill for GD last year when he was on a long contract. Long only has a year left on his which would seem to put us in the box seat unless another PL club comes along.

This is a fantastic bit of business for you guys, I rate mulumbu, 30 grand a week is a fantastic wage that us mere mortals will never earn and can only dream of earning. In todays greed league when you look at the wages they pay at man city, utd chelsea etc etc and you look at the spoilt over paid brats that play for these clubs (balotelli, rooney etc etc) that have seriously no idea what it is to work damm hard for a mere living then you have to take your hat off to some honest down to earth players at both Wolves and albion and to be fair I think both clubs are going in the right direction and we are both running our clubs properly with little or no debt, we’ll both do the midlands proud next season. I’m off to celtic tomorrow with my son we’re both looking forward to a great day out win or lose the footy season is almost back……

One of the best defensive midfielders in the league. He could easily play for one of the top sides and shine. Man U, Man C, Bolton, Blackburn, Liverpool and Everton fans I know up here all rate Mulumbu and next to PO, he is the lad they like the look of the most.

No. 2 (how apt) We wouldn’t expect you to recognise real class son. £6m for Mulumbu for 4 years or £7m before Fletcher before he has even kicked a ball, you tell me which is more of a waste of money. You’re a waste of good carbon mate.

Talking of wasting money, whose money are West Ham wasting now? £8m for Long!!!! They seem very confident that they’ll get promoted 1st time. If they don’t it’s a Leeds type slide from grace for them. Hopefully that will finally bring that club down to earth with the rest of us.

I’ve noticed that most missing posts are ones that go up between late afternoon and the next morning. I think that whoever does the censoring at this time is a Wulfie as anything short of high praise for Wolves never sees the light of day.

During the day I guess there are more staff on duty and what is probably regarded as a bit of a chore IE reading all this rubbish we spout, is shared around and things have a better chance of getting through.

There are strong hints that Foster is about to arrive this morning. Just right for the welding together of the defence in time for Man.U. and Chelski. What a baptism!
I can’t wrap my head round the idea of Sullivan and Co. spending £8M on Long. They do seem to rate our Scouts for their assessments of players, but parting with the cash has never been Sully’s strong point. I do wonder if Long’s agent is out there stirring it up.
