Albion back on trail of Ben Foster
Monday 25th July 2011, 11:00AM BST.
Albion today resumed their pursuit of Ben Foster and Shane Long as midfielder James Morrison called for new signings before the Premier League kick-off.
The Baggies were set to pick up their efforts to land Foster and Long today, as boss Roy Hodgson returned to his desk after the pre-season tour of America.
With the duo emerging as the club’s top transfer targets, Morrison believes landing new faces quickly would help them make a positive start to the season.
But the midfield playmaker believes the current squad is already stronger than that from a year ago, which did not include August 2010 arrivals Peter Odemwingie, Paul Scharner and Somen Tchoyi.
However, Morrison still believes the club, who have signed Gareth McAuley and Billy Jones on free transfers and lined up the Bosman return of Zoltan Gera, must strengthen further, preferably before the season begins on August 14.
He said: “If you look at the players who weren’t here this time last year you could argue we are stronger now.
“But I still think we could do with a few more players in the squad and I know the club are working on that, so it would good to get them in before the start of the season.
“It’s good to freshen things up and bring different personalities in the dressing room. It’s always important to get a good start because we don’t want to be looking for points early on.
“While you haven’t got points on the board you are always looking over your shoulder.”
Advanced discussions are underway with Birmingham over a potential loan deal for Foster, with the option to make the move permanent in a year should Blues fail to win instant promotion back to the top flight.
But the Baggies are likely to seek a compromise on Blues’ reported demand for a £1million loan fee.
They also are maintaining contact with West Ham over alternative target Robert Green, who is highly regarded at the Hawthorns and could still come back onto the radar.
Reading are now willing to drop their initial transfer fee demands – reportedly around £8million – on striker Long, bringing Albion back into the frame.
And they are still in discussions with out-of-contract midfielder Owen Hargreaves, although Hodgson has severe reservations about his injury record.

You would think with everything going on at Blues they would be grateful just to get Foster of their wage bill. Still not sure about Long, unless the original 8 mill mentioned drops significantly. Good point made by James about squad be stronger than it was 12 months ago, and look how that one did! Futures very bright.

Foster my No.1 priority. The other lads are already good enough and we shall have a fit Scottish dynamo to add to them. Long is relatively untried at top level, much more of a risk, so a lower price with add-ons will be JP’s approach I feel sure. Our medical ‘LegoTeam’ are more than good enough to decide on Hargreaves. The St.Peter wrangle seems to have died the death, hopefully his agent now, tail ‘twixt legs’ has learned not to play poker with JP and then there is our new enigma Somen Tchoyi. Where to play him? I hope we are praising a new hero and I think we will be. That Newcastle hat-trick was no fluke. So, without getting carried away as our first two games could involve some depression, we should be fine given a balanced amount of luck. Be funny if Hargreaves ended up on the bench for our first match.

Please not Rob Green, our fans would turn on him like they did with Carson, as he makes his fair share of mistakes, get Foster, he’s younger and a better all round keeper, and a season long loan would be good as I cant see blues coming back up with half their squad being sold, only problem with having him on loan is if he has a good season, other clubs will come sniffing around. Also wouldnt mind Shane Long as long as the fee isn’t silly. (exuse the grammer) Boing boing.

whats going on? are we going to sign him or not? all we hear is we are in discussions , i think we should just sign him perm not loan , why cant we just go in and sign players why is it always a long drawn out affair?

No new news then, this part of the year is so boringly slow.
Let’s have some new & exciting players to be connected with!

Tell you what if we wrap up all four of these we would have a fantastic group of players. Gera and Hargreaves added good prem experience to the midfield
Long a talented young promising forward
A good young prem keeper
Still think maybe we should have signed a prem centre back but we will have to trust in mcauley? What do people thing about upson?

On a slightly different subject is anyone else surprised that we havent been linked with David Ngog at Liverpool. Liverpool have apparently made it clear he can go either on loan or a permanent deal, we were linked with him this time last year, and Hodgson definately got the best out of him while at Anfield. Similar type of player to Odemwingie, maybe too similar, or Hodgson doesnt rate him?
Either way, i am still surprised that some reporter somewhere hasnt at least put the clues together just for a stories sake!!
I have been waiting for us to be linked to him and to be honest i think he would be a good option to cover Odemwingie, but alas nothing has emerged, but who knows……….
As for Foster, maybe we have had to wait for Hodgson to return to rubber stamp the deals???
We don’t half drag out our signings don’t we. We are clearly leading the chase on Foster, Long and Hargreaves and have been for 2 weeks but still waiting. I’m just impatient!

A friend of mine (Blue nose) must have been taking tips off a friend of ours (Wolvo) over the weekend, I have teased him something wicked over pre-season about us snapping up Foster, he has denied it profusely up until it becomes apparent that the discussions are advanced and the move looks more likely than it does not. So, he has delved into the deep despairing corner certain Wolvo’s do…
…”yeah but he isn’t that good, if we had Hart instead of him we’d still be in the Prem, you’d be no better off with him, he’d just take up your wages”
Thoughts please? I was astounded at the bitterness! What ever happened to the Eng No1 chants or legendary status he had held weeks ago?

4 Mikey.
I’d love to explain all of your well thought out questions but I can’t be bothered.
Maybe to get Foster, a deal with one of our peripheral squad players going the other way or one of our up and coming youngsters on loan for a season?. Certainly the asking price for Long has to be lowered considerably, as he is untried in the Premiership. There could be a “Add on” if he makes the grade.
(4)
Mikey,
You ask what’s going on?. Well to be honest, ALBION are trying to add a few players to our existing squad at the right price. Hope that answers your question.

JUST MORE HOT AIR !
Morrison, as well as Roy, now seem to be getting fed up with Albions lack of ambition.
Scouring the worlds football bargin buckets with the faint hope of getting lucky again like you did with the soon departing Peter O is a poor show.
If SKY only paid prem clubs ten bob a season to belong i could understand it.
As most of you regularly ask,,, Where’s the money gone ?
Perhaps a little unfair.
We both are having closed season ground improvments.
Us by having a brand new multi million pound super stadium, and you having a bloke with a set of ladders and a big tin of blue paint going round painting over the rust on the corrugate. It all costs cash.

4) “why cant we just go in and sign players why is it always a long drawn out affair?”
Because than we wouldn’t be the Baggies, and life would be oh so much more boring! We are like the Canadian Mounties, except we “usually” rather than always get our man;-)
4 I agree but you will probably get shot down on here as I did last week.
The problem is that if we mess around for too long someone else is likely to snap them up from under our noses.
I do think the squad is stronger as JM states but in my opinion we have a surplus of midfielders and as such i would not persue the Hargreaves thing. Priority for me is a goalkeeper and a striker.
whats the rush ?
It seems noone else is intereted in Foster or Long so it aint like were gonna lose out to other clubs.
Also look at the teams with all the cash, Man City aint rushing out and signing 10 world class players !
What is annoying is stories like this where there’s not actually any news, i instantly click on them thinking ‘somethings wrapped up’ only to hear last weeks news.
I suppose it keeps the e&s web site busy for the advertisers !

6- yes I am suprised we have not been linked with Upson. We need a centre back (although I do want to see Ibanez more often) and he is a very experienced premier league player. He is also available for free which should have Peace drooling.
I am so glad to hear that Foster is our main priority. What a player. I’ve always been a little green eyed towards Blues for having him. I would prefer a permanent move though because I recon Blues will get promoted or new financial backing and we’ll only temporarily answer the defensive question.
McAuley could prove a better option than Meite, Zuivi never played so Jones can’t have a negative impact if he tried (and you never know he might be quite good), and Gera we already know is an improvement on Barnes. Regardless of what is being said by some, this is definately squad progression. Long at £5-6m would be fair enough. He has played well at prem level before, he’s just had a good season and he can easily out score Miller and Bednar in this league.
I’m not having a go at Miller and Bednar. They have got us here over the years and they should be remembered at the Hawthorns for that, but they just won’t enhance our options at this level.

Dosent it drive you mad, no footy to watch and all this waiting around for firm news of new signings! We all know that JP and the board are very shrewd when it comes to getting new players in but I have to agree with some of the posters on here, why cant we just dig deep and sign Foster. As (3) said, if Foster has a good season which we obviously hope he does assuming he’s wearing an Albion shirt then other clubs may come looking next year which could hamper our plans of siging him then, which would mean we will find ourselves in this situation all over again. While this debates been going on we missed out on Shay Given, and although we didnt really show much interest to begin with, £3.5million would have been good money for a keeper of his calibre and experience. As for Long well I agree with other posters the fee needs to be reduced “big time” for this kid as he’s not exactly proven at this level and there were other better options in my opinion for a lot less money a.k.a Robbie Keane although his wage demands may have been an issue.
Hargreaves worth a punt for me on a pay as you play basis, surely we cant lose on that basis can we?

Arsenal rumours are breaking for Foster with a 6m bid. The time is now for us to do this deal or dare I say it, walk away; unless these are agent feuled rumours to get DA and JP to raise their terms. Tricky one but no surprise given who we are dealing with.

And so the saga drags on & on & on & on &………..yawn!! Some say JP is shrewd – well that may be but in my mind he’s TIGHT and no one in the Prem likes dealing with him ‘cos he constantly backtracks on agreements FACT. If the signing of Foster drags on much longer we will definitely get pipped to his signature. As for other signings well Hargreaves is too much of a risk IMHO and why do we need another midfielder when we’ve got an abundance.
As well as a keeper a new central defender, right back & striker is what we need so for heavens sake JP stop this faffing around and get some signings before we end up with the scrag ends that are left!!!

Okay, editor, I´ll try again. You must be too sensitive regarding my previous post. I only stated that we are seriously risking losing Foster to another club and that would make Albion look stupid. So why so sensitive? I didn´t use swear words or anything.
On a different note, worryingly, Thomas Sorensen is being linked to us on a Danish website, onside.dk. I don´t rate Thomas Sorensen, too often makes serious mistakes, so please don´t let there be any truth to this rumour.

JP has resided over the most successful period in the club’s history since the late 70′s……..now that’s a fact.
You may not like him or his methods, but his record cannot be argued with and there’s plenty of worse chairmen out there.
As said many a time on here, why not judge him in September when our transfer dealings are done? The number of people who rip into him in June and July every year is astounding when every year the majority of ours (and every other team’s) business is completed in August…..

JP’s Chequebook. We are all entitled to an opinion but I found yours somewhat depressing. Look at the positives. We are NOT in debt. We have a team that finished 11th in the Prem., overrated though the Prem may be. We are a medium sized club punching above our weight with a VERY experienced manager that the players respect. The players all know their wages will be paid at the end of each month. We have young players coming through from our new Academy and playing at International level. Our Scouts work all hours and seem to love it. The ground needs expanding, but hey, that’s a positive surely?
Now if I were a Blues fan, I would be worried. They don’t deserve what happened to them. Even Villa are not the force they were.
The realistic Wulfies are VERY aware they stayed in touch by the failure of others, much as we did in The Great Escape. I can’t see much to be too worried about and we shall get our men in the fullness. With the start we have, we need some luck and the full backing of the supporters. Worry about THAT!

With all due respect, you can’t possibly know the opinion of other Prem chairmen.
I appreciate what you’re saying, but you’ve got to remember it’s July. How many Prem clubs have signed more than 2 players?? Answer: Liverpool, Man U, Norwich, Sunderland and le dings, so 5 out of 20. The first 2 have a pulling power that makes such moves inevitable, S’land had surplus cash from Bent and the last two- would we have wanted who they’ve bought? There has to be a reason for the time-scale, either 15 out of 20 chairmen are as stubborn as JP, or these transfer deals are a lot more complicated than us mere mortals give credit for.
For example, this Foster-Arsenal rumour. If Foster’s agent is party to these, he can instantaneously increase his wage demands and Foster may think “Hang on, leave it a week and see what happens”, in which case there’s nothing anybody can do.

It’s ridiculous. Those quotes from RH the other day about having most of our budget to throw at a couple of targets, I read one site where it was reported RH and JP are at war over the budget from same quotes……just lazy journalism.

Right on….and we were lucky to get Paul Mardon!! What a player he was at the time. Captain Mardon International!!

That made me chuckle. Tranquillo……

Excellent news on Mulumbu extending his contract. A point I’d like to make though is that this story was on the Albion website days ago, why is it only being reported today, one line on the transfer rumours page?

Warren, “would we have wanted who they bought”
You would have loved Roger Johnson as some of the more honest Albion fans even said. You let yourself down with quotes like that. Id take O hara over Dorrens any day also although id expect some of you to disagree.
You all said Roger Johnson is a great player just overpriced by when we got him. How do you feel now we got him for £4.5mill?
Regarding Foster, JP is playing a dangerous game IMO. If you want him, just get him. All it takes is for a bigger prem club to get a pre season injury to their 1st choice keeper and he will be snapped up. Get him whilst no one else is in for him is your only chance.

Top quality posts (no surprise there) and I would again point our spendthrift Viv Nicholson faction to War and Peace’s post from this time last year when similarly there were numerous SPEND, SPEND, SPEND posts on here.
It’s so easy to spend someone else’s money when you don’t have to balance the books and perhaps more importantly you won’t have to shoulder the blame later in the season when you’ve rushed to bring in the wrong players.

the difference is that Kanu was a REAL class player, who spent years at Arsenal.
The only connection that Doyle has is that someone spread a rumour the Gunners might be interested (ha ha).
As for that boring old chesnut of ‘second season syndrome’,just because wolves continue to struggle doesn’t mean everybody will.
Just look at the likes of Bolton,Wigan, and Stoke for example.
I’m afraid the many wolves fans saying last season was a fluke for us,are just jealous and desperate to try dragging us down to their level.
Very sad.

Doesn’t it just emphasise how far we’ve come? Do these people that are complaining that we’re interested in Rob Green who is an England keeper still in his prime when they would prefer another England keeper that probably has his best years ahead of him realise that we’re living the dream?
I won’t go through the ropey keepers we had between 12 and twenty years ago as it’s already been done. BUT how do they think we’ve come to be in this enviable position?
1. It’s down to some good managers.
2. It’s down to some inspired work by our scouts and Dan Ashworth and his predecessors.
But the main reason is the Chairman who has appointed these people and given them the solid financial base to allow it to happen. All of this without a sugar daddy injecting massive amounts of cash.
Just be thankful and try showing a little gratitude instead of behaving like spoilt kids. Twenty years ago our supporters were like Oliver Twist asking for more because we were starving. Nowadays we’re like modern day kids complaining that we’re deprived because our iphone isn’t the latest model and we want the trainers with the flashing lights and the little wheels on.
Rant over, sorry.

I was one that said I wouldn’t have been disappointed if we’d signed Johnson, O’Hara or even taken a punt on Doris if we’d needed a back-up keeper. In CR78′s defence, I think his posts are often aimed at the moron’s from your side that come on here attempting to belittle everything we do despite what the reults say in black and white therefore they need to be read in that context.
As for O’Hara better than Dorrans. Dorrans has massive potential whereas O’Hara is probably as good as he’s going to get. In football things don’t always happen as they should. Veron at Man Utd was a good example, great player but somehow didn’t come off in the PL. Johnson may be an inspired signing but football isn’t an exact science so we will see.
Let battle commence and may the best team win.

Ben Foster would be a very good signing but I have been told by someone in the know with the Blues that he will go out on a loan basis as he would struggle to get say a £5-6m fee, as he might fail a medical? On that basis, this is the safest option for Albion. Rob Green is a waste of space in anycase!

That’s fair enough, if I’m honest I wouldn’t have minded Johnson, but not for £7m I don’t think. I was just trying to reinforce a point, perhaps he’s one of only a couple of players who was likely to be sought after by numerous clubs where the destination is unclear and it’s all been sorted out early in pre-season.
Re: O’Hara, I don’t come near to disagreeing. I think many of your fans even admitted he went off the boil after a good first couple of months. Dorrans almost single-handedly got us promoted with his 17-goal Championship season; O’Hara hasn’t achieved anything with his career yet. Next season will be Dorrans’ first full Prem season without disruption (hopefully) and from what most of us have seen in the clippets we have seen of him at this level, I think most Albion fans will tell you we’re more excited about seeing him than we are any new signings. I’m sure we’ll see in the next 12 months…..

The only fluke about last season was that wolves avoided relegation on the last day. And the tat about albion having second season syndrome to deal with this season?, all i can say is id rather have that than permanent no class wolves syndrome.
Lets just wait and see what happens.

I know the moderators don’t reply but I’d love to know what happened to it. I put some thought and effort into the post and it is a major wind-up when this happens especially when a lot of mindless and abusive posts do get on.

I may be wrong, but I think ‘southern’ was talking to Warren, not me?
Anyway,re: Dorrans and O’hara, and which one is the best, maybe it’s worth considering that O’hara cost millions, but Dorrans was about 100k.
So Dorrans and Mulumbu for 250,000?
Try beating that!

81) Who says you got him for 4.5 mill? Why do you choose to believe one unsubstantiated report claiming “we got him for £4.5mill”, when every other report says 7 million? I, you, (or any mischievous journalist for that matter) could claim Chelsea got Torres for 50p, but it doesn’t make it true!, the majority of sensible people would choose to believe the several other reports that stated they didn’t!

I’m not concerned about how many goals Dorrans gets, it’s his all-round contribution I’d be more worried about!! You’ve also got to remember O’Hara will take all of your set-pieces, Brunt will take most of ours.
I’m still not convinced by O’Hara to be honest. To me he looks fairly elegant in possession when he’s given time and space but I don’t see too much beyond that. I could be wrong though as I don’t see him as much as you.
I know you won’t have seen as much as Dorrans as us, but he is a wonderfully gifted player. He looked good in the Prem when he burst through in our last relegation year, he single-handedly got us promoted, then he looked good when he got a run in the team after injuries and personal issues last year. The reason he’s not flourished in the Prem is lack of consistent game time, not because he’s not good enough, you’ll see that this year hopefully…..
