Steve Madeley’s Albion tour diary

American sports journalists love their statistics.

So, as the great Ron Burgundy would say, “when in Rome.”

As Albion head home from their 12-day camp to the United States, the final offering from this year’s tour diary brings you the trip by numbers:

1 – The number of defeats suffered by the Baggies on tour. The loss to San Jose Earthquakes on July 12 might have been undeserved, but the Californian side will always remember the day they beat Premier League opponents and Baggies goalkeeper Boaz Myhill will never forget being beaten from 90 yards by opposite number David Bingham, thanks to a horrible bounce.

2 – The number of jobs done on tour by Baggies masseur Derrick Jones, whose healing hands also had to be put to sort out the players’ kit.

Del  -and legions of well-wishers at the Hawthorns and beyond -hope that, by next year, his good mate and long-serving kitman Dave Matthews is back in the saddle having won his battle with cancer.

Dave, who is undergoing chemotherapy, was much missed in the US.

2 – The number of log slabs sawn off by unique Portland mascot Timber Joey at pitchside on Wednesday.

8 – The number of goals scored by Albion on tour, and the number of different Baggies players on the scoresheet.

Jerome Thomas, Graham Dorrans, Simon Cox, Chris Brunt, Roman Bednar, James Morrison, Somen Tchoyi and Gabriel Tamas all found the net as Albion ended the trip with, as our American cousins would put it, a 2-0-1 record.

9 – The marks out of 10 Albion’s players would give to their training facilities. They were blown away with almost everything, with the long drive between hotel and training ground the only complaint.

10 – The marks out of 10 George Thorne gets, both for his attitude around the camp and for his first extended interview with the Express & Star. The 18-year-old, who penned a new contract while on tour, spoke impressively and sincerely about his debt to Albion.

10 – Also the marks out of 10 for Albion assistant sporting director Andy Marriott and his organisation of his first pre-season tour. The players all loved the trip and Andy was a very good stand-in press officer, too.

18,627 – The number of fans packed into Jeld-Wen Field on Wednesday as Portland lived up to the nickname it was first given back in the 1970s, Soccer City USA.

20,000 – Roughly the number of times I reached for the gearstick in my automatic hire car.

20,001 – Roughly the number of times I will stall my normal car on the way home from Heathrow, forgetting I now need to use the clutch again.
