Albion call off David Vaughan chase

Albion today dramatically pulled the plug on their bid to sign midfielder David Vaughan.

The Baggies unexpectedly withdrew from the race to sign the Wales international after a last-minute change of heart by the Hawthorns hierarchy.

Vaughan had been due to deliver his decision to Albion today, following a summer of discussions with several Premier League clubs following his departure from Blackpool.

But the Baggies pre-empted the 28-year-old’s announcement by opting out – a decision that could open the door for new discussions with former Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker.

Albion boss Roy Hodgson is an admirer of Vaughan and the club had held positive discussions with the player over personal terms at the Hawthorns.

But Baggies transfer chiefs – including Hodgson, sporting director Dan Ashworth and chairman Jeremy Peace – have now decided to focus that slice of the playing budget on other targets.

That could yet prompt them to revisit Reo-Coker, after they held intitial talks with his representatives before negotiations went on the back-burner.

The former West Ham captain left Villa as a free agent at the end of last season and is yet to find a new club, despite talks with potential new employers across Europe.

But his wage demands could still pose a problem for Albion, should they decide to make a move.

The latest developments regarding Vaughan are certain to be noted at Wolves and Birmingham, both of whom lodged an interest with the Welshman’s representatives.

Vaughan is not thought to be a priority target for Molineux boss Mick McCarthy while Alex McLeish, the Blues manager who expressed an interest in the player, has since moved to Villa.

Albion are still expected to complete a deal to re-sign Zoltan Gera on a free transfer before the weekend after the 32-year-old held talks and underwent a medical.

And the Baggies are continuing their hunt for a new goalkeeper, amid reports from Poland that Manchester United have slapped a £4million valuation on Tomasz Kuszczak.

Have it on good authority that we’re putting in a bid for Charlie Adam.

Blackpool keep announcing that they have not received a bid for him and then put a £9m target on him to try and keep him in the news. Yet Liverpool have opted to try and get Downing instead.

Think it’ll probably flush out Spurs since they might lose Modric, but apparently we’re offering £6m for him

Strange one but a clear strategy from Mr Peace for someone else.

£4m for Kuzcack is ridiculous, why don’t we be done and buy Robert Green for £3m.

Good decision. By my reckoning we have 21 players in the squad allowing us only 4 more buys and 2 of those will be keepers. I`ve included Gera in the list and excluded czech and Bednar as I presume they will be moved on.
As such we need to buy better than Vaughan, he`s the sort you buy if you`ve just come out the championship.
Our last 2 additions to make our 25 will be a quality striker and a quality midfielder or defender.

What’s this good authority you claim? No offence but I’m always suspicious when I read something like that. It’s a bit like the guy who claimed to play golf with Shorey and said that he’d confirmed Mulumbu was leaving…utter BS!

I never understood the interest in Vaughn – he is a good player but certainly no better than Dorrens, Morrison, Cox or even Gera… so where when would he play ??

It does sound like there must be developments elsewhere, otherwise why would you pull out of negotiations so suddenly after talking to the guy through the Summer?
Maybe we’ll get an announcement soon to say someone else has agreed to sign instead.
We could do with a bit of solid action to relieve the current boredom.

As for the ‘transfer rumour’ thread saying Reading want at least 10 mil. for Shane Long, they must be havin’ a laff.

If a championship player who averages 1 goal per 4 games is worth that much, what would you pay for a premiership player who scored 15 goals last season (against the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea),and won ‘prem. player of the month’ twice?

It’s no wonder we look to do business abroad, players over here have overblown value and obscene salaries.

Disappointing for me, was looking forward to this player (at the right price) because not only a class attacking midfielder, it is lesser known that he is well capable of playing defensive midfield, which he has done at international level, a two for one!

    How suspicous is this!

Like people have said, he wasn’t a huge priority so im not hugely disappointed but just what on earth is going on!

What next, we ‘pull the plug’ on the Gera deal. We should sign Gera before this weekend?? They said that last weekend. Think what you want about him, but we also sell Carson with obviously no replacement lined up. We were also told Odemwingie would have signed a new contract within a few days, that was almost a month ago…

Do we keep moving the goalposts on what we have initially agreed/told the player when having these ‘positive talks’ because it seems like we might be saying we have pulled the plug just to save face to me.

I really rate Vaughan so am slightly disappointed – think he has been a class act over the past couple of seasons for Blackpool. Very much the unsung hero behind Adam and DJ Campbell’s goals. I do not believe a word about the Adam to WBA posting at the top…..

I agree with Happy though that we have enough strength in depth when it comes to centre midfield. Dorrans will be like a new signing this season hopefully. I also agree with Happy that our midfield reinforcement focus should be more towards a defensive midfielder to cover/ challenge Mulumbu. I’m not keen on Reo-Coker though as will demand very big wages compared to the rest of our squad and I question his attitude. Has been disruptive at both West Ham and Villa in the past

1,charlie adam is a no go he’s off 2 liverpool for silly money,we wudnt sign him he wudnt fit into our squad, the club need 2 pull there fingers out and sign a keeper cos we desperatly need 1,we need 2strikers and 2 defenders and possibly one more midfielder vaughan in fairness wudnt get in the team or the subs bench, the reason we dont want him is cos the club want reo-coker on a free who can help the team much better than vaughan cud

I get the impression that we are getting the free transfers sorted early so that we can move onto the more time consuming and more difficult task of transfers involving fees. Gera will probably be the last of the free transfers, then onto a keeper, a centre half and a striker.

The sale of Carson and Valero has put some funds into the pot, and the likes of Mattock, Bednar, Miller, and Cech all have a chance of being sold.

I am sure Dan Ashworth and Roy Hodgson have their targets in sight for which the funds will be required through transfer fees.

I am waiting for the day that we sign a European based player who we have never heard of that becomes another star amongst Mulumbu, Odemwingie, Tchoyi, Olsson, and Dorrans.

All the rumours so far have involved mainly English based players and we all know that we have a scouting network that goes far beyond these borders. I would be amazed if we do not see another possible gem signed from abroad.

As for the keeper situation, Harper is too inury prone, i do not see the PIG as too much of an improvement on Carson (especially at £4mill) Rob Green would possibly be a reasonable signing, but the only one that made me say oh yes please was Given, and he has reportedly already ruled out a move to us.

As i have mentioned above, dont be surprised if we see a keeper come in from abroad.

English based, i like Lee Camp, but we havent been linked with him.

I think we have all been of the opinion, for several years, that financially, football has indeed gone mad.

The fee being quoted for Shane Long, has now propelled this madness into sanity oblivion.

The recent dealings have pushed it into this state, £20M for Jordan Henderson !!!!!
£16M for Connor Whickham, it makes it even more laughable and devoid of reality when you hear figures of £4M being bandied about for Mulumbu.

Football will surely implode if this madness is allowed to continue.

    39) What I think is that anyone who can play in a position at international level should be able to replicate it at domestic level, wouldn’t you agree. What is your obsession with height? were you happy slapped by a dwarf or something? I fail to see what size has to do with it, given the height of current team I have already pointed out. I wouldn’t care if they were 4’3 as long as they can do the job. Presumably with you in charge, given the chance, we would have turned down forwards such as Maradona 5’5, Pele 5’8, Bobby Charlton 5’8, or Keegan 5’8 because at that size they couldn’t possibly have been any good as forwards could they? Tevez at 5’8 and Messi at 5’6 must be rubbish too, is that what you are claiming? I mean at those heights they couldnt possibly “have also nicked headed goals off corners and free kicks” as you put it. As for other modern players, Xavi Hernandez 5’7, Iniesta 5’7, Sneijder 5’7, Fabregas 5’9 or Ribery 5’7, all too short by your logic. Pity, Ashley Cole at 5’9 wont want to come now has he heard he is too short to possibly play a defensive role isn’t he?
How long have you been waiting in the wings to get that in by the way? was it worth it? (rhetorical question) don’t recall you commenting on anything else recently, so one must assume just some one I have upset at some point trying an allyarse to be clever, trust me, its not working, I suggest you come back when you “actually” have something to contribute or original to say. p.s.- if you knew Kev like me,you’d know he IS serious about the ticket-but you’d have to pay him back a quid a week.

Now what station’s Jeremy Kyle on?………

The Vaughan deal as some have already alluded to, has most probably fallen through due to wage his demands. Though somebody has mentioned there could be a big signing imminent, which is an interesting point, after all our work in the transfer market is understated in the main.

By the way Lonely, ignore those having a pop at you, your posts are welcome on here. Personally I’m loving the banter between Lone, CR78, and Kev. Why else would anyone want their daytime TV viewing interrupted!

Relax people, last year we were linked with all and sundry, Djemba-Djemba all but signed….didn’t sign….nobody knows why…..we went on to sign Scharner, Odemwingie etc etc.

TRBB mention’s Dean Kiely’s Twitter, he makes a point of saying the target list (for a keeper at least) has been well and truly drafted for weeks. People will be working on it, but I imagine it’s difficult to conclude stuff with most of the football world on holiday/whilst clubs are waiting to replace the players they’re getting rid of.

I don’t want to cast doubt on your height post as I’m sure you’ve researched it and most of them seem believable, BUT I’m 6 ft 1 and I stood next to Marek Cech at the Old Trafford turnstile last season. I don’t think I was wearing CR78′s platform boots, but I could be wrong…..

    58 Warren-

I said at the end of last season that we’d need to be patient, because these things do take time.
As you say,Peter O.,Scharner,Tchoyi(maybe others??)signed in August, just before the deadline.

I suppose Vaughan is a typical example of ‘the system’,that is if a player has some ability, and more than one club are interested,he will sit back and carefully choose what suits HIM,and his agent will play clubs off each other to secure the best possible deal.

In this case, you feel that either Vaughan wanted terms that Albion weren’t willing to match,or another more promising alternative may now be in the pipeline?

Either way,as I’ve said before,I can’t think of better people than JP,RH,and DA sorting out these potential transfer deals.

    One Half,
In answer to your reply to (39) Peace in the valley. Vaughan at 5’5″ is too diminutive. The names you list are all taller than him. Also I thought we were on about AlBION players. Hope we don’t sign a 5’5″ keeper.

    61) and being Welsh and short as a negative was your original statement, so your point is.
Its nice you take so much interest in my posts to the point of counting the words, now that’s devotion, as for my cage being rattled I think you will find I was correcting you (again) would you prefer I just ignore you?

p.s. still nothing original or interesting to write I see?

    62) He is 5’7, not 5’5, and I say it again, if hes good enough at international level whats his height got to do with it? its simple, can he do it, yes/no?, and we are talking about Albion players, I was making the point that P.I.V., given the option, would have turned down Maradona simply on the grounds he is 5’5 (and foreign presumably?) as for your post at 48) listing all the players we have over 6 foot, what is the relevance in this context? P.I.V. was stating that because he was 5’7 (and Welsh?) he couldn’t possibly play for us in a defensive midfield role, even though he has at international level, if we are to judge players merely by how many inches tall they are Peter Crouch would be the best forward in the Prem, where as we both know he clearly is not.

    WG scores again

Wee Tommy Magee was only 5ft 2 and a half inches tall – our smallest player, ever – and won a League Championship medal in 1920 and an FA Cup Final medal in 1931. He also played 400 games for us and had five England caps. We called him the Mighty Atom. But, then again, if outfield players reached six feet in those days they were “giants.” I am not sure that tiny players can now make the same long-term impact. Good luck to Vaughan, though, wherever he ends up.

    One Half,
Stand corrected on David Vaughan’s height, But he is still two inches shorter than the ALBION players you mention. The only thing height has to do with it is, you mentioned ALBION’s smaller players, so I had a look at the bigger picture just to balance your statement. No insult intended to anyone.

    67) non taken my friend, you made my think though, small keepers, Jorge Campos, 5’6, I would have took him in his day, he wouldnt have satisfied P.I.V. though, as although a goalkeeper, and scored 14 goals in one season for Puma’s,if P.I.V. had been in charge would never have been allowed?????

53, Kev, Your very kind offer is much appreciated and your further offer of being me minder i know holds water, cus ive seen the size of you in that photo. With you fists of “ham joints”, and size, i would feel reasonably safe. ( mind you, anybody would look tall stood next to Rocket.)
Me Wolves mates think im mad for even concidering it and remind me that Wolves are playing on the 13th aswell. ( they stay over at mine when we play in the north west )
So on this occasion, with it being the first day of the new season, which we are all gagging for to start, i am going to have to decline. This time.
I still aint sure you are only winding me up, (cus God knows i deserve it ) And i thought i got up your nose more than most, but i can only read the words as i see them, so if you were serious, then i would love to on another occasion. Thanks again.

Lone, we all know you are a Baggyboy at heart, but you really have to watch The Wulfies on opening day. We don’t mind, honestly. There’s a chance we’ll be on TV anyway so you could get to see both and be as confused as ever as to who you love most. Better to have TWO girlfriends than none.
