Thorne pulls out of England squad
Thursday 30th June 2011, 9:11AM BST.
Albion teenager George Thorne will get a major chance to press his first team claims this summer after being withdrawn from England’s under-20 squad.
The 18-year-old was due to play in the under-20 World Cup in Colombia but instead will head for North America on Albion’s tour of the USA, after head coach Roy Hodgson earmarked the midfielder for first team scrutiny.
Thorne made his first team debut in the final half hour of Albion’s Premier League campaign, after coming on as a substitute in the comeback against Newcastle which saw the Baggies haul back a three-goal deficit to claim a point.
His reward has been to gain a place on the Baggies’ tour, which goes ahead between July 10 and 23.
But Gonzalo Jara will not be involved, having been selected in Chile’s 23-man squad for the Copa America.
Already in training for the South American championships in Argentina, Chile’s first game is against Mexico on July 4.
