Albion sign £2m shirt sponsor deal

Albion today signed a £2million deal with online gaming brand Bodog to become the club’s new shirt sponsors.

The two-year agreement sees Albion’s growing Premier League profile reflected in a club record sponsorship agreement, which has seen them break through the seven-figure barrier for annual earnings from a shirt sponsor.

Bodog, described as the world’s largest online betting brand, announced earlier this year they were on the look out for a Premier League clothes peg on which to emblazon their brand and Albion’s soaring finish to the season appears to have done the trick.

The deal even extends the Black Country rivalry – Wolves sponsors are from the same online betting industry – and comes ready-made with what Albion hope will be a happy omen for the club.

Bodog were also the sponsors of Fulham when Albion head coach Roy Hodgson was in charge at Craven Cottage and led the team to a Europa Cup final.

Albion’s tie-in is with Bodog Europe, the official licensee of the Bodog brand for online gaming in Europe, and they will officially become club sponsors from July 1 and will have additional high-profile branding at the Hawthorns.

Bodog Europe will also become the club’s official betting partner, providing Albion fans with a huge online gaming platform.

Albion chief executive Mark Jenkins trumpeted the deal today by saying: “We are delighted to have Bodog on board and, following our most successful Barclays Premier League campaign, there was a great deal of interest in becoming our club sponsor.

“We had a number of options and, in the end, Bodog presented an all-round partnership that best suits both parties.

“We look forward to helping them promote their brand in the Premier League.”

Patrik Selin, chief executive of Bodog Europe, said: “In choosing a sponsorship partner we were looking for a club with a genuine team spirit and we are delighted to have found that in West Bromwich Albion.

“In the social media era, a sponsorship should be about backing the investment with a return commitment to the club and the fans and we are looking forward to working closely with all parties.”

The significance of Albion’s first seven-figure-a-year sponsorship deal will not be lost on the club, after their best-ever Premier League performance last season removed the ‘yo-yo’ label from the Hawthorns.

You quite rightly finished above us last season becuase you took action beofre it was too late and brought Roy in and he made a huge difference. It will be interesting to see how things pan out this season but I hope that we are both still in the prem.

Congrats on getting a decent sponsorship deal (seriously). Like Tipton says it’s only a name on a shirt. I work with a Tranmere fan, quite a knowledgable guy, goes to most of their games. I just e-mailed him and asked what he thought of Cresswell, this is what he’s just replied with:

‘He has a left foot at set pieces fit for the prem league, but an overall ability of a Blue Sq Prem player. He gets a huge split from the fans, proper love hate.

His set pieces are quality, and I think he scored 5 this season including a worldy away at Orient, but defensively he is shocking and a real liability even at League 1 level. We were shocked when Ipswich made a bid, and now you lot are coming in which will drive his price up! I rate our other left back more highly so not bothered Aaron is leaving. Can’t believe you would want him, as I thought he would leave to a league 2 club at best. That saying Woy’s transfer policy is usually spot on!

It will go to a tribunal due to his age, and as he has played a lot of games we might get a bit for him like £2/300k or Lateef Elford-Alliyu in exchange which we would be made up about.

Our best player is Dale Jennings, better than Koumas was and isn’t as lazy and work shy, but he’s off to Bayern Munich. There is talk of Koumas coming back this summer, what a waste of a talent he was.’

I just think that at present times where Debt over £15k is the average in the U.K. that advertising betting online is not a great idea.

Due to unsecured loans, CC’s rammed down your throat at any possible angle 10 years ago we are paying for that spend easy policy.

That could happen quite easily with online betting and for the average football man feeling lucky on a matchday will start chucking his money away willy nilly.

Do you honestly think adidas were banging down the albion doors desperate to put their brand to smethwick sporting pedigree? (As in the same pedigree as Hull, Peterborough, Swansea…)No its all about business Adidas charge something like 50% mark up on the merchandise as do the likes of Nike etc In other words you pay to use their brand. If its sells more shirts well fine it makes business sense.
It will be a standard adidas team wear template as seen last year with stoke strip.
To be honest I would sooner Wolves have gone with a more reputable brand.
But the reason we’ve got Burdda is because we make more on the kits. Thats why we were the 3rd best well run club last year based on the balance sheets.

Good products need no advertising, and I have posted on here in the past that I preferred the shirts when we had no sponsor at all. You can’t legally gamble until you’re 18, but these firms can advertise and attract under 18′s.

It’s okay everyone, Shadrag’s alive and well, he just seems to be using the pseudonym Wolfmeister these days.

With Albion obviously dominating on-the-field activity (you forgot to look at the league table again) and securing a deal that eliminates the ‘No sponsor’ taunts he subjected us to, the new slant appears to be ‘Burrda charge less for brand usage than Adidas, therefore we’re better than you’. If the more exclusive the brand, the lower the profitablility, wouldn’t the top clubs be getting their kits done in Bilston market??

    Father Ted

I like the new home kit – the adidas badge looks cool on a baggies shirt and I like the 3 stripes on the shoulders and the new collar design…. I can see one of those in my near future.

Not quite sure about the blue away kit yet – I may have to get used to that one !!

    We only need one half!

    65) Most inappropriate has to be “winners don’t smoke” we got relegated the same season ;-)

54.Lone. It looks like you’re still smarting from my rather clumsy attack on you a while back, but I did whisper to Mrs Lone that I was truly sorry. She gave me a lovely kiss and said you would be OK once you’d calmed down. I’ll have another ‘word’ with her. Such a lovely lass. We’re very lucky.

There seems to be a lot of reminiscing about past kits and sponsors. There is a website called http://www.historicalkits.co.uk where you can see every previous home baggies kit in all their glory along with manufacturers and sponsors names.

    Warren,
“Coucher and Shaw” were closed down by the “Law Society”. Whether that’s the same as going bust, I haven’t a clue.

As most of the Wolves blogs are either closed or rubbish at the moment, thought I would come on here. Interesting one too with some very funny stuff – well done Lone and also Stars and Stripes (to name but a few!):-)

astleistheking – I work in social housing and fully agree with your stance on the betting. Although at home now, I read this at work and it has stuck in mind. I think it is a sad day that so many sponsor deals are coming from such places, along with Wonga.com etc etc. Now don’t get me wrong, I do like a flutter now and again, but think this is too much – especially when you look at the financial state of football itself….and don’t get me started on the state of our country!

Anyway, enough of that serious stuff. Bring on the football, only about 6 weeks to the big KO and have just about got over the end of the last season.

    WE ARE WOLVES!!!

76.Percy. Very welcome to join us friend Wulfie and whatever you do, don’t start ME on the state of our country or the E.U. !!!
Gambling seems grossly unfair to me. Every week without fail, I put £2 on the National Lottery and have never won it once yet. Every once in a while they give me £10 back for a good try but after 20 years I deserve better.
    73. Sir Tez. Nice one Sir Knnniggut.

Thanks for the mention. Along with Lone Wolf you seem genuinely decent wulfies and I look forward to future discussions/debates with yourselves.
Like you I can’t wait for the season to start but won’t be making and brash or unrealistic predictions for either of our respective teams as I’ve been a Baggies fan for far too long and these things have a habit of coming back and biting you on the backside. All I will say is I’ll debate things honestly with anyone who cares to do the same, but if others want to come along with any one-eyed schoolboy ‘my dad’s bigger than your dad’ pettiness then I’m up for that also.
