Scott Carson close to Bursaspor move
Thursday 23rd June 2011, 11:30AM BST.
Former Albion captain Scott Carson is close to completing a £2million move to Turkish club Bursaspor – pushing the Baggies’ bid to find a new goalkeeper into overdrive.
The club have no fewer than four keepers on their radar as boss Roy Hodgson’s summer overhaul begins to gather momentum.
Relegated West Ham’s Robert Green, eager to keep his Premier League status to revive his England career, is joined by Manchester City’s Shay Given and Newcastle’s Steve Harper on the Baggies’ wanted list.
Former Albion goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak also remains a contender for Hodgson, who also has to find a replacement for Dean Kiely.
Kiely is the club’s goalkeeping coach and doubled as third choice last season but is not having his playing contract renewed.
And Carson was in Bursa yesterday to hammer out a three-year deal with the Turkish club.
Although elevated to the captaincy by former boss Roberto Di Matteo, Carson has never wholly convinced the Hawthorns public of his merits and Hodgson was known to have made a new No 1 a priority this summer.
The chance to make a fresh start in the white-hot atmosphere of Turkish football has appealed to the 26-year-old former England international, signed for £3.25million in readiness for Albion’s Premier League campaign under Tony Mowbray in 2008.

I dont understand this one at all. Why would you sell Carson for less than you paid for him, I mean im not a Baggies fan and still blame him for the Croatia and the Euro’s. But he is still worth more than 2 million !!! Seems crazy to me
Report abuse
WOW from the frying pan to the fire, Go at em Scotty. Boing Boing

Dont understand this one at all, surely he`s
good enough for 2nd choice keeper.
Albion now need two goalkeepers let alone 1
because Boaz Myhill simply isnt good enough.

1. Actually, this deal has been subsidised by Kev in Mallorca, to enable Carson to recover from the trauma inflicted by the minority of morons who howled at every real (or perceived) error
Report abuse
2 years left on his contract so worth nothing next year, Hodgson doesn’t see him as number 1 so £2m seems reasonable. He will be back in England within 12 months I reckon prob to the Championship.

Carson critics
You’ve had your say, we argued back there aren’t many realistically better and affordable. If we got Shay Given, it’d be fantastic, but how would you all feel if we end up with Robert Green or Steve Harper??

The Gap in his front teeth lets in as many as him

The price does seem a little low given JP’s reputation for securing a good deal but I think it is the right thing for Scott.
He does have a lot of potential, which is why Liverpool, Villa & the Albion all signed him, but he is also prone to far too many mistakes to be a genuine top class keeper.
1 – If £2mill is correct I can only think the Albion board have kept the price down to help with the move.
Good luck to Scotty Carson – I think he suffers from the same problem as Steve Maclaren – he made a mistake for England and has never been forgiven by the vocal minority.
I just hope we bring in a robot (Robot Green ??) for our next keeper cos God help him if he makes a mistake.
1. Perhaps it shows just how keen Albion are to move him on and get something for him. It seems there were no other clubs inquiring for him so this was the best deal. Also, keeping him on as second choice may have been too expensive wages wise. Who really knows.
Despite my desire for him to ‘come good’ I have never really rated him.
He is still young and I hope he improves further. It will be a massive test for him in Turkey. I do hope it doesn’t destroy him. All the best Scott.
I do hope The Albion have got someone virtually signed up. It seems daft to let him go before having signed someone else. Not least, the fact that other clubs will know we need a keeper and can hike the price of the guy we are interested in, UNLESS of course we are going for a free transfer deal.

The best positive news to come all close season.

we need a keeper first then you can sell crap carson i have heard that the japan keeper is still there grab him before someone else takes him from under our nose.
A warm welcome to the wolves posters on here – as a baggies fan who tried unsuccessfully (yet again) to get a post printed on your story about Moxey moving on to cheaper transfer targets I would love to know the secret….
Stupid to sell him IMO , decent keeper and he is worth 4 million at least as he is still young at 26 and probably got another 14 years left in him, and who would we get to replace him? Kuscack is no better, Green is just as error prone and Given is out of our league as we wont pay his wages, come on Albion do the right thing.
If these reports are true, then i will not view his depature without a hint of sadness.
It is probably best for Scott himself to ply his trade elsewhere, i felt the levels of critisizm he had to endure, were entirely disspropotionate to reality.
What will be interesting, if/when he leaves, a mischevious journalist asks him his thoughts on the Albion fans.
If he replies with anything but gushing praise, doubtless the factions that gave him dogs abuse, will get all moral.

12 Happy-
now that the dingles have gotten over the shock of being 3 minutes from the championship, they’ve predictably come back here to mouth off.
The fact that so many want to come here and try ‘put-downs’,shows the measure of their jealousy, that we finished so much higher than them.
What a sad bunch of losers.

1
No one else wants him including Hodgson and with only a year left on his contract we might as well take what we’re offered.
3
He’d definitely be good enough as back up but he wouldn’t be happy playing second fiddle would he? Might as well sell him now rather than him request a transfer in January and lose an extra million.
6
You’re only thinking of who’s available and affordable in England. I wouldn’t be suprised if DA has been tracking a keeper in Scandinavia for the last 12 months. Time will tell but for me I’d be suprised if Green’s a genuine target and I think he’ll be going to Villa. Harper has always been underrated for me and IMO a better keeper than Carson but I doubt Newcastle would let him go. PIG I don’t think is the answer and Given may be out of our reach given his wages so my bets on a foreign import.
It’s all gone very quiet about the Japanese keeper hasn’t it?!
It seems like an odd decision to me, especially if Carson’s only going for £2million! If he is sold, I’m confident that a successor has already been lined up and will be announced very soon afterwards.
I’d go for Allan McGregor from Rangers, or Schwarzer from Fulham, if the rumours of him being available are true.
i think its a fair price as is contract is up next summer, we will have him off the wage bill and can bring someone in who will do a better job, he as had many chances in the 1st team and yet still fails to impress, i think its best he leaves as we can bring someone in who is much better as we could do better things this season, with carson in goal we would struggle as u work from the back going forward and the back four have struugled at times last season due to carson’s dopeyness in goal, there is no confidence from large sections of supporters me included with carson still being here so i think its best he goes
Report abuse
I would liked to have kept Scott, but was also sick of argueing with fellow baggies about him. The stick he got was never in proportion with his performances. It appears some wanted to blame him for everything when a lot of the problems were down to poor defensive team play. If Peter Shilton had faced as many attempts on goal every game as Carson did i think he may have dropped the off howler.
Also if somebody can explain to me why we would replace him with Rob Green cause i do not understand that, he is no better at all and has the same faults as Carson.
Also can one of the wolves fans explain how you can comment on our side yet whatever i write on there pages (always fair comments)they never go on
Report abuse
As other posters have indicated he has lots of potential, but has failed to drastically improve. For someone who has bags of International, European (including Champions League) and EPL experience, he still fails to properly command his area, his distribution is woeful and his lack of communication with the defence is striking.
That said, I always had a soft spot for him, and on his day Carson is an outstanding keeper and his shot stopping is second to none. I feel some of the abuse cannot have helped his confidence. Hope we have a decent replacement sorted. Matt Gilks on a free from Blackpool anyone?
Good luck Scott, you have shown glimpses of a top class keeper but these displays have been few and far between. How many times have we walked out the ground honestly saying to ourselves thank god for Carson he kept us in it today? Answer is once or twice maybe at a push? He isn’t consistantly good enough and makes more than his fair share of mistakes, anything down low he struggles with and again consistantly when he can’t hold the ball pushes it out into the danger area rather than getting it away from goal. Good luck Scott but im not unhappy about this transfer but wish you well for the future. Time for a new number 1 give someone else a go because the whole Carson thing hasn’t worked 2 clean sheets all season……… not all Scott’s fault obviously but this speaks volumes.
Best news of the summer so far! Not very often you can get rid of unwanted players and get decent fees. £2m is a JP style price considering amount of interest in Scott and length of contract.
I am not a Carson hater, i have never booed him like the front of the brummie, and think the treatment he has had has been harsh and unwelcome. He will also be a big loss in the dressing room i believe as he is a big part of the team spirit and a character.
However, and most importantly, he is no good!!!! RDM ultimatly lost faith and so now has RH. Both better judges of a football player than me and you.
He made a handful of good saves last year, yet cost us around 10 goals directly with palming shots back into play, 2 x chel away free kicks, 1 x man u away, cost us 2 goals v fulham away, 2 v stoke at home, 1/2 v newc away, the list goes on!
Bring back the PIG ( stop slagging the PIG off on one bad performance for man u v bburn that people saw on the tv!! )

This moves looks like the best thing for Scott, but im not sure if its the best thing for us.
As for replacements, Lee Camp at Forest i rate as the best outside the Prem.
Never going to get Shay Given, Kuscack no thanks, Steve Harper good keeper but injury prone.
One last thing, whatever happens in the transfer market, we have to place faith in what Hodgson is doing, so far he has done pretty well.

If we get a bright young keeper from Scandanavia who improves what we had, then great, I’m all for it but it’s supposition.
All I’m getting at, is that this board is rife with posters who are quick to criticise what we have, yet go suspiciously quiet when pressed on an alternative. I discount some good posters (yourself included) and 3 or 4 of the Carson critics from that who have had the good decency to suggest an affordable replacement. A lot more haven’t.
I’m just asking the question, what those people who booed and barracked Carson’s every error would think if we got Robert Green in to replace him?
Most of the Newcastle fans I know (admittedly only a handful) don’t rate Harper at all.
any albion fan worth his salt that has watched carson home and away this season can not honestly say that we can move foward with him in goal!!!!? the back four are allways under pressure at corners and free kicks as they know if they do not deal with whats swung in then carson will stand there in no mans land! bebe’s goal to name 1. he is a shot stopper at best and i would rather see someone else get the chance now! ime sure we will end up with 2 keepers this summer ,1 possibly unknown as was the pole when he pitched up and perhaps a seasoned prem keeper whos knockin on abit to help bring the number 2 on !!!!!

Not slagging the PIG off for one game, but I am concerned that we saw him through a rich vein of form (Man U away, Wigan away etc) which all keepers are capable of. Towards the end of that season there were signs that form was wearing off, he dropped a clanger at Spurs away and also on his debut for Poland.
I don’t doubt he’s a good goalkeeper but I just wonder if we have an inflated opinion of him based on that spell.
wbaforever/baggiejono
A fellow Baggie once told me (don’t know how true it was but they had no reason to lie and it was first-hand) that they saw Carson and Kiely out over Brum together, the former pretty wasted.
The Albion fans asked for a picture or something like that and Carson responded with an expletive-filled rant about how all Albion fans hate him anyway and what he thought of all of us, which one of the lads began to film.
Kiely then had to go over, sit with the lads and offered to get them all a drink if they deleted the video to save causing an issue.
As I say, don’t know the reliability of that story but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear a similar rant once he’s gone and to be fair, I don’t blame him!!

Carson will probably be happy to escape the English media and their unforgiveness toward him for a mistake that wet night at Wembley. I agree that for Scott it is a good move. For us time will tell, replacing Scott and Dean K will be a challenge. Sheffield mentioned Gilks of Blackpool who as a replacement for Deano would not be a bad shout.
As for Camp – isn’t he now at Swansea which has allow Doris to go to the Custard Bowl.
Not being English may be a better move since any half decent English keeper will suffer from the spotlight as much as Scott did.
You can argue all night that Scott wasn’t good enough, that’s where you sit then fine. Just show me who will do it better.
If Given wants first team footy then he needs to take a pay cut – whereever he goes.
I’d also argue that a goalie is only as good as his back 4 allow him to be. The number of times Scott was left with little or no chance last season because of poor defending definitely did not help his cause.

When we signed SC a few years ago we were all shocked at getting a future england international gk. It’s a sign of how far we have come over the last few seasons that we now feel he is not good enough for us. I would suggest that the boo boys should cast their minds back to the days of Paul criton, tony Laing. Even the beast and russel hoult made calamities in abundance. Personally I would welcome him leaving but never booed the lad. I feel a lot of what I call “the new generation” Albion fans have forgotten where we came from and cannot possibly see where were going being so short sighted and narrow minded. As for offering a candidate to replace him…I’ll sit on the fence and let JP,DA,RH decide. Either way I’ll back them 100% while they were the WBA jersey. Ps this is not me taking the moral high ground this is me reacting to todays society wanting and demanding results without really understanding what great effort goes on behind the scenes

When RH arrived one of the first changes he made was to put Carson back in goal so I would imagine that he wants two keepers rather than one.As a past critic of Scott Carson I cannot honestly say I am sorry to see him go but wish him well in Turkey.
I cannot understand the reticence of some fans into the possible return of TK. It seems to me that his only crime was join the biggest club in the world. As I remember he gave several outstanding performances for us and was arguably the best keeper we have had for a very long time.

To all the people who think a goal keeper should be faultless – you would have hated Tony Godden and even the late great John Osbourne – both were keepers who made errors and has weaknesses in their games – but the fans loved them anyway cos we SUPPORTED our players then…. and cos they tried their best – just like Carson has !!

Personally, i do not think PIG is a better keeper than Carson, obviously that is just my opinion.

Interesting story, I think it’s the right move however, there is a lot more here than meets the eye, don’t forget that Hodgson is perfectly placed at clubs like WBA and as money is not in great abundance he must use confidence and positive change as a tool instead. I would be over the moon if we were to sign Given (a player I have admired since I was a child, watching him in the Toon army) or Green, and almost as delighted to sign Tommy K back from the Red Devils, lesssons he learnt from Fergie will be priceless for us, and also give us an insight into their tactical prowess. Carson has been great for us, there’s no doubting he has been the best kepper we have had alongside Russell Hoult and Alan Miller in my time as a fan. These things happen, lets allow him to spread his wings! Onwards and upwards! Good luck Scotty!

Aparently no-one else is allowed an opinion on SC apart from the usual suspects! Even though most of us have also observed him home and away for the last 3 years.
SC hasn’t been consistantly good enough over the three years he has been here FACT, Nobody has exactly been beating our door down to sign him or take him off our hands. I have never booed Scott or any other player who plays for our great club. Football is all about opinions i just find it laughable that certain people feel their opinion is the only one that counts on here. One thing that is clear is that SC splits opinion and thats healthy. I honestly believe and trust in RH as i firmly believe he knows better than any of us having worked with the player. Roy obviously doesn’t think he is good enough so he is on his way for decent money. I believe we will replace Scott with a more consistant keeper and trust Roy and Dan Ashworth to come up with a suitable replacement. All the best for the future Scott but i feel it’s a good move for both parties.

Not this old chestnut again?!!
3 DorransLovesBrum – Why do you say Myhill isn’t good enough? From what little we’ve seen of him in an Albion shirt I don’t think he’s done much wrong and in my opinion was harshly dropped. Two sets of management have believed that Scott was a better option than Boas so maybe they’ve seen something on the training pitch we haven’t on a match day?
6 Warren – I guess I fall into the Carson critics group you mention (although I’m not a booer during games). For me Carson simply hasn’t been good enough in an Albion shirt and is not the answer. Can anyone in Scott’s corner genuinely argue that he has been good enough and worth £3.25m? £2m for me seems a fair enough price as his stock has gone down since joining us. Clearly Roy and co don’t believe he is good enough – with 2 years left on his contract we have to sell now to get any significant money.
I fully agree with your comment of who out there is better?….I’ve raised this exact point before. I don’t believe Given is realistic, nor Kuszczak or Harper any better than Scott. However, Scott is not the answer and the time is financially right to offload him therefore it looks like he will move on. Good luck to him but he will be leaving us because his performances over the last 3 years have not been good enough not because a small minority have got on his back over his time here. As for a potential replacement – we have to trust and believe that whoever Roy and co bring in as a replacement it will be an improvement. I have a couple of Forest mates that massively rate Lee Camp who Bomber suggested – not seen a massive amount of him myself.
24 – to imply that the boo-boys are the reason Scott may leave is ridiculous!
Just for the record – although I don’t agree with the vocal minority getting on Scott’s back during games, I do believe far too much of it has been used as an excuse for his performances. Chris Brunt who gets an equal/ if not more amount of unfair stick (around my part of the BRE) doesn’t get cut anywhere near the amount of slack on these message boards yet he was one of our best players last season….same cannot be said of Scott. Am sure I’ll be shot down for saying that though…….

I would like to second your comment. Tony’s problem stemmed from, if I remember correctly, being pushed into regular first team appearance due to the retirement or unavailibilty of the bionic goalie (John Osborne to those not old enough to remember him). He hadn’t had the time to develop a thick skin and if he let in a gaol early it use to play on his confidence and he could let in a bus full. But he was a good keeper and, despite us fans being on permanent tranqs when he played, we all cheered him on.
As regards Tomaz I would like to see him return as I thought he was an excellent keeper. I don’t blame him going to ManU and would welcome him back in a heart beat, as an aside I would do the same for Gera.
I would like to apologise to Scott for the behaviour of some fans who seem to have forgotten the cardinal rule that anyone who pulls on the stripes is worthy of our support as, usually, they play for the good of the team. All of the players I have had the honour of watching played their heart out for the team. The only exception that I can remember was Asa Hartford who was a changed man when his transfer to Man City fell through due to medical reasons.

Cheers for your thoughts.
We all have different matchday experiences, but I can honestly say I’ve heard a lot more abuse directed Carson’s way than any other player and argued with more people about that than anything else.
As for replacements:
Myhill- to me didn’t seem to bring anything to the table that Carson didn’t, seemed to lack authority in his own area (hence why he was dropped for Stoke?). Carson was at least a talented shot-stopper.
Kuszczak- see post 29.
Sorensen- I personally don’t think is any better than Carson, still plenty of howlers, dropped by Stoke and Villa.
Westwood- Just gone to Coventry
Foster/Given- bigger clubs will target
Green- Same problem as Carson
Camp- I don’t know much about him so take your word, but is it just me or do a lot of Nott’m Forest fans massively rate their own players/club/history (take 2 years out, they’ve won as much as Walsall)…rant over!!
Unless we get someone from abroad or someone like Camp, you’re looking at a Stockdale or Al-Habsi who can’t get in his own team and this was always the danger with the constant hounding. Lets hope DA has something up his sleeve.

Doesn’t command his box. Is too indecisive meaning he’s a hindrance to our defence. Flaps at crosses when he does eventually come off his line. . My grans knickers get down quicker than he does. And the one good took in his bony that if did have (shot stopping) has vanished too, proven in the Fulham match. £a million is good business those things considered. Lets use the money funny the transfer, put it with the money that we were always intending on spending and beat Wigan to the signing of Al Habsi.

As an ex goalkeeper myself. Playing in that poisiton is a thankless task. Make a great save and you are a god, equally make a blunder you have thousands on your back (well not in my case). However SC was not a bad goalkeeper in fact ha made some great saves. Sometimes you have to look at the defence he has in front of him. There are 11 players on the pitch and I have always thought defending was from the front man? So before slagging an individual off rememeber where the mistake came from. for expample in the world cup a so called Robert Green made the mistake V the USA, but nobody slagged off our Steven Gerrard who did not close down Clint Dempsey for the shot he got in? With all the shots fired at him cause of our leaky defence hes probably the most tested keeper in the prem, plus cause of his expectations everyones constantly watching him.
I think the second half of the season his performance was great as was a lot of other players for albion. we’re not looking at punting olson off cause he scored a couple of own goals and made mistakes. Noones looking at Fortune moving on cause he doesnt score goals and hes a striker. SC should stay.
Whoever we get wont be as good, but if RH sorts out the defence he wont need to be. I’m sad hes leaving.

Interesting point for you, only one team let in fewer goals than Burnaspor last season.Out of the frying pan into the fire springs to mind!!
My choice of replacement for Scott would be Schwarzer.

Good luck, Scott. An average, leaden footed keeper that needs a new challenge. In spite of some poor performances these past 3 years, he was harshly treated by the Hawthorns “faithful”. I abhor fans that boo our own players and worse yet, subject them to ironic cheers.
While I’m glad he won’t be starting between the sticks for us next season, I wish him every success.

Could be £2 million plus add on’s. Probably good for Carson to get away from the media limelight.
In my opinion a decent keeper but career ruined by mindless idoits who know little about football let alone playing in goal (sadly we seem to have quite a few a WBA).

Scott Carson. R.I.P. Ripped In Pieces by his OWN supporters. I’ve read all that lot, the fors, the againsts. One of the ‘against’ posters is 56.baggieboy1975. I read your post carefully, twice, and there are more clangers in those few words than Carson made in a season! eg:
“the one good took in his bony that if did have”
Then “£a million is good”, ”
Lets use the money funny the transfer,”
“Whomever it does up being”…
Your defence may be that words are not your business. Fair enough, but neither is picking football players and you can’t argue that that is your business either. Now you can hate me instead of Scott. Makes as much sense.

You know what worries me most in all this? The sheer viciousness of the postings of a few. Spiteful, nasty, angry supposed supporters. This debate can go on forever. In summary the way I see it….
1. He hasn’t performed consistently to the levels we all had hoped for when he signed for 3.25m three years ago.
2. The time is right for him to move on for his own career development and financially for WBA. £2m is a fair price as his stock has gone down from when he signed for us and he only has 2 years left on his contract.
3. We have to trust RH and co that they will bring in a better keeper should Scott leave.
4. If Scott does leave (which looks ever more likely) then he will be leaving because RH does not believe he is good enough and that he can find a better replacement – not because a very small group of idiots booed and ironically cheered him throughout games.
5. I’ve read a lot of comments by those in Scott’s corner actually using the fact he had a weak back 4 in front of him as part of their defence of him – valid point to a degree. However, this doesn’t mean a goalkeeper can’t stand out and shine. In fact I believe that to be the opposite, it’s a great chance to shine. In 2006/7 Scott was named Charlton’s Supporters player of the season. Charlton were relegated that season having conceded more goals than any other team

I’ve always been a member of the so called SC Fan Club but I’m so glad he’s gone. It’s a bit like when an elderly relative dies and you say they’ve gone to a better place where they won’t have to suffer any more. Members of the SC Fan Club can now turn our efforts towards defending whoever the hate brigade decide will be the next target. RIP Scott.
I see that some of our fans have already turned their bile on the possible replacement in goal. In a strange way I almost admire their forward thinking. In one way I’d like to see Robert Green in goal. I think he’s a fine keeper that has suffered in front of a leaky defence and made one mistake when playing for England. Unfortunately he would be a ready made replacement for the boo boys.
35 Happy.
Far and away yhe best post on here (closely followed by Cyril and Shropshire at the end.) It’s true that memory is a wonderful thing. I know for a fact that Ossie caught every cross, Bobby Hope never mis-hit a single pass, Bomber never missed a scoring chance and the King put every header in the back of the net. But in our mindless way we supported them all because they played for the Baggies.
PS at No9 was that NTNONews influenced ‘assembled by Roberts.’ Excellent.
I think I’ve come up with the answer to our problem. When I was young and we played football in the Sand Park in London St in Smethwick, if we were short of players we played rush back keeper. I suggest this because I don’t think any goalkeeper will be sufficiently error free to satisfy some of the experts on here.

I did actually say that SC splits opinion which is healthy and that Roy works with the guy everyday so knows far better than me or you if he is good enough. Seems like Roy sits on the not good enough side of the fence. My point was that there are a lot of the usual bloggers on here who seem to be taking great offence at people saying Scott isn’t good enough both yourselves included. I don’t mind you guys supporting Scott but having watched him as closely as you guys have for 3 years the side that doesn’t support Scott is intitled to view that opinion. Ken in Mallorca said……

Agree wholeheartedly with your more sensible posters. It is totally wrong to destroy a player on these sites, let alone chant abuse at them during matches.
Most of it is usually down to complete ignorance and being ill-mannered
Take our friend 56 baggieboy 1975.
What a wonderfully constructed post that is!
It’s not enough for him to demonstrate he has a bit of a problem with the alphabet, he’s also found wanting with his understanding of the game. Robert Green has proved on grounds around the country he can be world class. Unfortunately, he (along with a few other goalkeepers, Shilton included) has dropped a couple high profile clangers on television.
Don’t these people realise an outfield player’s mistake can be costly, but a goalkeepers can be terminal.

I think we’ve never had a go at people that state their opinion that he isn’t good enough. It’s the abusive, spiteful posters and the ones that blame him for things that a myopic cranially challenged Martian could see were not his fault that get our collective goats.
The other thing is that it always seems that it’s okay to come on and be abusive to someone at the club but if we defend them then we are ‘preventing others from having a point of view.’ No we’re not, we’re pointing out that there is an alternative point of view and those that can’t accept that should perhaps think twice before they dish it out.

Bully (84) has explained this more succinctly than i ever could, but i will make an attempt.
Please do not suffer from selective vision, i have on a number of occasions been a critic Scott Carson, but it has been in discussion with fellow Baggies, not ridiculing the bloke from the stands.
And this is where i try to defend him.
There were posts on here a couple of weeks ago.
One claiming that he had cost us 20 points, and another blaming him for two goals per game, those claims are simply ridiculous, so i say they are.
I dont know if you remember a young full back we had called Scott Darton ?
He was, during one game subjected to abuse that was inhuman, i felt ashamed by association. It was tantamount to extreme bullying, i never want to wittnesss the like again, but could see this happening with Carson.
And finaly, no i am not questioning the judgement of RH, i am just questioning the motives of people that boo and ironically cheer, and what do they think that achieves.

I am not a great fan of Scott but I do feel he has been made the scapegoat for a number of others who have also been poor, and that includes the Defensive tactics of RDM, and Mowbray. Not that they have escaped that much to be fair.
I seem to be in agreement with you on your view of SC from what I read.
84 TRBH
Totally agree.
I would also add that just because we may criticise players on this forum doesn’t mean that we are in the boo boys section on a Saturday.
The fact that there are different opinions makes it the game it is – one we know and love.
RH and DA should be trusted to bring in some good players over the summer. The future is bright with the current set up. Interesting to see we will have a new shirt sponsor on our Adidas kit next year too. Hopefully some more money for RH to improve the squad and no more red houses!

Cheers for the response. I’ve never had any problem with anybody saying they don’t think Scott Carson’s a good enough keeper because of x, y and z having watched him like a lot of us have. The only thing that I get riled with is when people say ‘Carson’s the worst keeper I’ve ever seen’, ‘he’s cost us points in every other game’ or that when we’re losing, Carson becomes a target for abuse unjustifiably.
This season I’ve heard him being blamed for all sorts of daft things e.g. Bolton away when Elmander walks through about 4 tackles and blasts in from about 5 yards; ironic cheering at Wolves when he caught a cross, yet he was faultless that day; Newcastle away for their 2nd. Carson’s fault? Arguable, I admit that. But nobody mentions Meite spooning a routine header to give them the ball or Olsson losing his man. I even heard a man hurling abuse at him at Goodison as we were walking out, having just won 4-1!!!
To me these things are irrational, disproportionate and often downright nasty and I’ll argue all day long with anything like that or when people crticise without giving an alternative solution.
When someone like yourself puts together a debate and an opinion. Great. That’s what the boards for isn’t it? I just hope you’re not confusing passionate debate about something you love for being overbearing and dismissive as that’s never the intention.
For the record, I actually agree with 76 Beevower’s post and a lot of the things you say.

The Real Bully Hoo,
I haven’t seen many of these spitefull posts so i can’t comment on that. As for Scott Carson i do believe that the backers of him have an equally distorted view on exactly how good he is versus the bad, again only my opinion which may be wrong in some peoples eyes. I do agree it is easy to make him a scapegoat but don’t feel that this is as bad as you are making out. I sit in the Smethwick end and have never heard anyone openly boo him whilst playing, i have heard the odd comment about how he should have done better with that one etc but not the barracking some bloggers on here would have you believe. I totally support RH in his decision making when selecting our playing squad. He obviously doesn’t think Scott is up to it and neither do i but that fact is he more than likely has gone now so that draws a line under this debate because he won’t be our player pretty soon. I will watch with interest who we bring in and they will have my support just as Scott did. I had high hopes for him and was really excited about his signing 3 years ago. I personally think for me he has been disappointing. He has shown glimpses of brilliance but only glimpses, basics though are just not there. Concentration, positioning, decision making, parrying the ball back into danger areas, 2 clean sheets all season although not all Scotts fault he must take some of the responsibility for this along with Tamas and Jara IMO. With Olsson back from injury and Reid coming in we looked a lot more solid.
Anyway bring on Man Utd on August 13th!

All clubs have a few idiot fans – the Albion are no different. A few people boo during the game at scott and or other players. I think a very large majority agree that this is wrong but it happens all around the country. Let’s not blow this out of perspective like this message thread has. Scott is a big boy earning a huge salary – I think he’s more than capable to put up with a few boos and ironic cheers (albeit unnecessary).
Scott is leaving because he hasn’t been good enough and that is clearly the opinion of RH otherwise the Albion wouldn’t be in talks with the Turkish club about the transfer.
88. Cyril – the more we focus on these idiots in the ground and make comments such as “the once magnificent Brummie Road” the more these comments will stick with other supporters/ players around the country. Good business for the Albion bearing in mind he only has one season left on his contract.

I’m saying it could be, unlike Romsley who actually know’s that Roy has decided he’s go to go, how he knows? he probably won’t tell us.
As for his performances, well let me put it in a nutshell, yes he has made mistakes and so have many of the goalkeepers in the Prem, he gets the blame for many goals and incidents during play that are not down to him but it’s easy to blame the keeper if you don’t really understand the game i.e No1 post on hear Terry should have put the ball in the stands before he belatedly passed it back to Carson and has since said it was his fault but people remember it as Carson’s gaff.
What would have been the reaction if Carson had been in goal instead of Hart for England’s last match.
I think it was the game against B’ham away last season, they crossed the ball high to the far post Carson jumped under pressure from an attacker, punched the ball a full stretch with his one hand, the ball went out for a throw in,
Two clowns by us bollocked him for not catching it,me and a mate just looked at each other in disbelieve.

Lots of “facts” being banded about on here – and lots of opinions that no one is allowed to question.
I have been a supporter of SC in the past and will be sorry to see him leave – and that is despite seeing some of the errors he has made – the gaff at fulham being a dreadful one that led me to suggest he needed to be rested… but i feel I put these in context with the good games he has and the good saves he makes.
Some “facts” are as follows :-
RH saw enough of SC in training to return him straight to the first team, despite Boaz doing ok – so based on that, RH thinks SC is a decent keeper.
RH is now selling SC without a replacement yet in place – which leads me to think this is not about SC’s ability – and SC is moving abroad.
So either SC has asked to go (without putting in a request) or RH feels (as many of us do) that he will not get the support he needs on match days and that this will affect both his form, and ultimately the form of the team.
The last is only my opinion based on those two facts – but if I’m right there are elements of our crowd that make me ashamed to be a fan.

105 Beevower.
Hard one to answer. Obviously I was hoping he’d be a combination of Clemence, Shilton and Banks but then my hopes of most players we sign are along these lines.
Perhaps a better question would be to ask some of our ‘supporters’ if they expected him to be the keeper that made that mistake against Croatia and held onto that image of him even when he played well.
I saw a decent keeper that made some mistakes, made some great saves but was probably a nervous wreck over the likely reaction every time that he appeared anything less than a Superhero. Let’s face it whatever he did would bever have been good enough for some people.
I think he would have got the same reaction from a certain element in the crowd anywhere in this country. Therefore I think a move abroad where he will be judged solely on his ability is his best bet.

Beevower
Fair question. I don’t think any of us think he’s lived up to the hopes and expectations we all had when we signed a 24-year-old England goalkeeper.
Similarly, do you think his career’s a write-off and that £2m represents best value? It seems a shame that this undoubtedly talented keeper will have to go elsewhere to try and fulfil his undoubted potential.
I think a few of us have made the point in the past that David James was by no means the keeper he is now at 26. Perhaps with more patience and some good coaching, he could’ve developed with us as perhaps a back-up to a good, solid and experienced keeper.

Happy, interesting slant on the facts. We are all Albion Supporters i believe and want whats best for the club. The debates that take place on here are because we all care about our club and believe our opinion is the correct one. I suppose thats why we all get emotional about it because we want us to do well. You say that RH thinks he’s a good keeper, questionable, he did however return him to the starting line up which is true. This doesn’t mean he thinks he is the answer, maybe he doesn’t rate either of them and we will see them both go this summer? Time will tell anyhow. I honestly believe whether it’s true or not that SC would not be leaving if RH wanted to keep him. Instead we would be offering him a new long term contract as we have done with some of the other players.

110 – Warren. Very fair post and your comments re the Chelsea game were very true. E.g. How Carson took all the stick for Chelsea’s first when Shorey failed to clear for a corner only to pass the ball back to Drogba to blast in I’ll never know.
Do I believe his career is a write off? No, absolutely not. The fact that keepers tend to hit their prime in their 30′s Scott has time on his side. I’ll be honest in saying that I’m not sure that Scott will however fulfil his potential shown at such a young age. I do believe £2m to be a fair price at this stage of his career/ contract with the Albion.
114 – Kev – valid comment that Carson will have been under mega pressure. Some of it unfairly but some that he brought upon himself with his performances. We’ll have to agree to disagree on whether his performances have overall met expectations – maybe pick it back up at the next meet up at the Vine!!

Stuck in the countryside on a fishing break with very poor wi-fi on mobile.
Just want to say let Scott go,any further discussion is like sawing sawdust.
For those who have wanted him out for so long, just hope that any replacement is a genuine improvement.
If not,and a new guy costs us points, remember that you got what you wished for,and live with it.

Well it seems the boo boys finally got what they wanted. This may end up working out for us if we get Given or Schwarzer, but I think that we’re more likely to end up with Harper or Green. Two keepers I rate quite highly, but lets face it if we sign Green the boo boys will be out in force as soon as he pulls on the shirt.
Scott is a quality keeper, 26 and an England international. I must say lads, I’m a little ashamed at the way we’ve treated Scott and what self respecting Goalkeeper would sign for us now? In the end we’re going to have to pay through the nose to compensate any keeper to put up with the abuse. Whoevers next, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GIVE THEM A CHANCE.
