Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Albion still in hunt for Danny Graham
Monday 6th June 2011, 3:15PM BST.
Albion are still in the hunt for Watford striker Danny Graham – despite Swansea edging ahead in the race for his signature.
The Swans have become favourites to land the 25-year-old, after having a £3.5million bid accepted by the Hornets yesterday.
But Albion, who had a £2.5million offer rejected a week ago, are still in touch with the forward’s agent and have not ruled out matching the Welsh club in setting up a head-to-head battle for last season’s Championship leading scorer.
The Baggies are keen to add to their forward options to take pressure of Peter Odemwingie, who shouldered much of the attacking burden in his first season in the Premier League with 15 goals and a string of impressive displays.
Graham is on a list of potential forward targets being considered by boss Roy Hodgson and sporting director Dan Ashworth.
That list does not include Fulham striker Andy Johnson despite continued speculation at the weekend that Hodgson was plotting a move for the former Birmingham striker, who he managed at Craven Cottage.
But the Baggies are closing in on the signing of another former Fulham player in former Hawthorns winger Zoltan Gera.
Weekend reports from his native Hungary suggested the 32-year-old had agreed a contract to return to Albion, where he remains a hugely popular figure with staff and supporters following his previous four-year spell with the club.
While those stories are premature, negotiations are going well and the Baggies remain strong favourites to land the former Hungary captain for a second time.
Another man linked with Albion over the weekend, Bolton winger Matt Taylor, is not believed to be on the Hawthorns radar.
But the club look set to step up talks with another Hawthorns old-boy, Tomasz Kuszczak, this week as their search for a new goalkeeper gathers pace.
The Baggies have turned their attentions elsewhere after Brad Friedel rejected them in favour of a move to Tottenham and they will now continue talks with Kuszczak, after receiving positive feedback from their initial discussions.
The 29-year-old Pole, who spent three years at the Hawthorns from 2004, looks certain to leave Manchester United this summer.
And Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer and Japan No 1 Eiji Kawashima are not targets, despite weekend speculation.

Please please not Gera……yes he did us proud before but to old and hes just looking now for his final pension plan. New young blood who have something to play for is what is required we already have the experienced players along with some young up and coming lads (Hurst Thorne etc). Sorry Gera but no thanks.

‘And Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer and Japan No 1 Eiji Kawashima are not targets, despite weekend speculation.’
That’s funny considering Kawashima himself has stated that he has held discussions with us and Lierse have also confirmed this.
I don’t think Graham is the way forward for us, especially at £3.5 mil. I would rather us go out and try and find another PO or Tchoyi as how many times has a top scorer in the Championship managed to prosper in the Prem? One good year doesn’t mean you’re ready for the massive step up.
With regards to Gera I can’t see how he would get near our first team as all of our current attacking midfield options are better. Plus at 32 I doubt he would be anywhere near the player we used to have.

If Albion haven’t agreed a fee for a player in contract, what are they doing speaking to his agent?

With so many young players in the squad i think there is room for a 32 yr old Gera – his experience and attitude would be a benefit in the dressing room – but whether he will get a regular game is uncertain – but if he is still fit he is certainly good enough.
With the 25 man squad we have to name it will be a 1 in / 1 out policy where we replace the odd player – McAuley for Meite, Jones for Zuivi and possibly Zolly for Barnes – I think we will see a decent striker come in – after that I can’t see too much that needs doing unlss Roy decided to move a couple more on (keeper and maybe MAF ??).

has anyone out there been affected by the no concession at 60 rule in the West Stand. I am trying to get support to challenge this as I believe it is discrimination.

I’m afraid I have to disagree with you, LMS.
I’d be quite happy seeing DG turn out in the Blue and White. 24 years old, 2 good feet, quick and a good finisher – and unknown again to Prem defenders.
We’d all love to discover another St Peter – but how often does that happen??!!!

Also, when was the last time we had made (or were in the running to make) this many signings early in June?
Could this be the most boring Transfer Deadline Day ever for an Albion fan??!!!!

I think a new forward is absolutely essential seeing as our two major goal threats in PO and Tchoyi will both be at the African Nations halfway through the season. True, Cox could replace them but I don’t think he’s as effective as a lone forward and God forbid he gets injured and then we have no one.
I also doubt that McAuley has been signed to Ollson’s new partner at the back. I would expect another commanding CB to come in along with a new keeper.

All good points but the Prem is a different animal. Good forwards in the Championship rarely make the same impact if given the chance to step up. Don’t forget Ellington had two good feet, could head the ball and was very quick but he hasn’t been half the player he was after a poor year in the Premiership. I think we need to be looking at players who have played at a higher level against better players i.e. internationals who have played in the top leagues abroad like PO and Tchoyi. the step up for them is less as they have much more experience and would be cheaper seeing as to sign a British player nowadays you have to pay way over the odds.

DG and Zolly are solid rumours but the rest are speculation and using the market place.
DG is a useful striker, not sure about Gera…
My favourite rumour of the weekend involved Scott Carson, who has been linked with a move to Turkish club Bursaspor; there’s a Turkey joke in there somewhere!

I have to disagree with regards to the Gera comments. Happy makes a very good point Barnes out Gera in which would we all prefer to see? Also Gera offers an arial threat both from a defensive and attacking perspective. He scores golas and is still good enough at Prem level. For a free transfer it is risk free we know exactly what we are getting. It would be a great signing and i would welcome him back with open arms ala Bob Taylor!

5,Dave the Baggie,
These rules were brought in before the start of last season. My two friends who both reached the age of 60 during the season before last were looking forward to cheaper prices and after writing to Jeremy Peace, they were told that because they were considered to be the best seats in the stadium that they would have no trouble getting the extra revenue and that the club would take advantage of this.
So after being season ticket holders since the mid sixties and sitting in the Halfords for 26 years they moved to the Brummie on principle.
Thanks for your loyalty lads but money comes first !!!!

LMS – I agree that the African nations will hit us hard – and IMO we will need to replace both MAF and Vela too – so Cox Plus 2 other options needed (don’t forget Bednar).
I think with McAuley, Tamas and Pablo on the books, plus both Sharner & Jara able to play there, we won’t see another CB coming in – but I wouldn’t rule out McAuley getting the shirt – he is certainly a commanding figure.
I think I’l leave the keeper debate if thats ok – can’t stand another day of that one – lol !!!

But would he be happy sitting on the bench? Let’s face it, he won’t dislodge either of our current wingers and Cox, Morrisson and Dorrans would be ahead of him for the attacking midfield role off PO. Not a bad back up player and on a free it would represent no risk but I’m not sure he’s anywhere near the player he was when he left.
To lose Barnes and gain Gera makes the squad stronger so a good move
3.5 mill for Danny Graham is to much so let the Swans have him
Still prefer Sorenson but Schwarzer would be a good move, not Kushak he’s as shakey as Carson and we would gain nothing
Report abuse
I think Happy’s made a significant point here, we’ve let Zuvi, Meite and Barnes go and recruited Jones, McAuley and (probably) Gera in their places.
Instead of comparing our expectations to past signings e.g. Odemwingie, shouldn’t we be looking at whether the ones in are a better bet than the ones out? In which case, the answer is surely yes?….and whilst I’m purely speculating here, probably reducing the wage bill slightly allowing monies to be focused elsewhere? It sounds like good business to me, especially considering the homegrown rule.
Graham- don’t know much about him if I’m honest. LMS- I agree with your point, I’d be more optimistic about someone tried and tested at that sort of level, but I guess we have to trust Roy.

Excellent point Romsley Baggie. It was as much his defending at set pieces that was one of the vital ingredients which we lacked under Mowbray in his premiership season. Also be good to see him bang in a few at the far post from Brunts crosses if he ever gets the chance to play on the left again. Zolly’s premiership nous is exactly what we need. Plus the more ‘frees’ we get in,the more money to spare on other areas. COME ON YOU BAGGIES!

5. Dave the Baggie.
My Mother and Father-in-law both had season tickets in the Halfords lane. Half way through last season they both reached 60yrs, and were looking forward to a reduced rate. After trying to get cheaper seats in the Halford’s and failing my father in law wrote to the Baggies and got a reply to say that they would only be full price tickets available in the Halfords.
They have transferred to the Brummie and saved quite a bit on the price of their season tickets.

Danny Graham deserves a chance. Just because he is not in the limelight of internationals or champions league doesn’t mean he hasn’t got what it takes. If we keep hold of PO and bring in Danny Graham to help out with Cox, then the pressure won’t be on him completely. Sure Ellington didn’t do it for us, but when we were in the Championship we bought in Luke more from Villa (Prem experience) but that didn’t work either. Simple truth is if DG is good enough he will make it regardless of his experience or lack of it. I’d agree that 3.5 is a lot but if you have seen the goals he has scored this season he is a sniffer much in the frame of Kevin Phillips. Cox has come from Swindon and still had a positive impact on our season so why not Danny Graham?

Agreed on the Zuivi and Meite points – better players in on probably less money. With Gera though I have a feeling he was on a pretty good contract at Fulham and would want us to at least match that seeing as this could possibly be his last payday. I vaguely remeber reading he was on something like £24,000 per week at Fulham which we wouldn’t pay. I would also expect him to want first team football as this is the reason he wants out, and I just don’t see where he could fit in with us.
Have to say that I am torn between heart and head with Gera. Heart says yes but head says that we have better younger players but perhaps on a free he could be worth a punt to play in the hole behind PO. I would go for Shane Long over any other forward in the Championship. Always scores goals and has done it briefly in the Prem before and if £4m being floated round is right, seems worth it compared to £3.5m on someone who is still very unproven, but that is not to say that DG would not do the business. It is good to see us doing business early and still think that there will be other in’s and out’s.
I am not going down the Carson route but I have to say that if we want a keeper, we should go for the best and try Given. Unlikely I know, but stranger things have happened.

An interesting time coming up – we will have to move more players on if we are gonna bring any new blood in – the defence looks about right, keeper poss 1 in / 1 out (naming no names)
A 5 man midfield of Gera, Dorrens, Cox, Mulumbu and Brunt – there are goals all over but is it tough enough ??
I think Gera could do as job wide right so maybe cox on the bench and Sharner in with Mulumbu….. and yes I have no place for Morrison – I can see him moving on.
Up front is the most interesting area – we have Bednar MAF and Miller – none of whom seem to set the world alight – Tchoi and PO look the bizzo how many new forwards do we need ??

If the deal was £2.5 mill I’d say yes why not but at £3.5 mill I think the money could be better spent looking elsewhere. If I had the choice I’d rather we go in for A.Johnson at the same price or DJ Campbell who would cost a hell of a lot less and represent a much lower risk.

Dangerous game dropping Scharner as we know how poor we are at defending and losing an old head in the centre of a battle would probably see us crumble. I think Mulumbu and Scharner have to remain in the centre and I would rather stick with Thomas and Brunt on the wings with Dorrans, Cox and Morrisson battling for the AM role. So where does Gera fit in as all of these players are better than him IMO?
I have a feeling Pablo will move on as he hasn’t been given a chance for one reason or another so another CB would be needed. Miller or MAF will probably go as well so another striker will definitely be needed. And without naming names, hopefully a solid GK.
I think we will continue to play 4-5-1 in most games next year and when fit / available P.O is gonna be the “1″ – so we need players of quality but prepared to be a back up from the bench – I think that rules out Andy Johnson and maybe DJ Campbell – don’t know if Graham would do it – Tchoi will and we need his attitude in whoever comes in.

LMS 23 – I forgot Thomas… ha ha.
I’m not sure we do actually need Gera – but I do think he is still a good player – its just how you fit them all in aint it.
You will note I dropped Cox to the bench to play Sharner – I agree we look weak without him. Brunt is a must and I think a fit Dorrens will be first choice too – so its just who plays wide right from cox, Barnes and poss gera…. i would go for Cox for goals but Gera for all round play.
I’m useless at this… but its fun !!!

You may be right re: Gera, I don’t know. Would a player’s contract value likely decrease as they head into their 30′s though? I’m no expert on this. I can’t imagine he’s fighting off Prem offers and how many leagues match what English teams pay in wages? Perhaps there’s room for manouvre.
For attributes, I’d say his aerial ability (both defensively and offensively) would bring something, particularly with Brunt’s crossing and he can pop up with a goal or two, perhaps someone to bring off the bench?
On the subject of a striker, I think we need to be careful. If we continue with 4-5-1, we have to accept that 1 will occasionally be isolated, especially as RH will set us up deeper than we spent much of last season. That 1 needs, to have strength, pace, power, willingness to run the channels to allow Brunt and Thomas to get alongside. If that 1 is Andy Johnson or A.N.Other shorty, I’m not sure we’ll get out of our half as they wouldn’t have enough presence by themselves.

Very true. I think Johnson played the role of loan forward at Palace when he bagged 21 goals didn’t he? If the African Nations wasn’t happening I would say the need for a striker isn’t as pressing as it is as we know Tchoyi can perform the role quite ablely. DJ Campbell from what I saw last season can play somewhat deeper than PO so perhaps he could be the player we need? I think his get out clause is £1.5 mill so he’d be a snip!
Thomas at times drifted in and out of games last year but his pace and direct running frees up space for others and I don’t think Gera could bring these qualities to us. Wouldn’t mind a punt on Kranjcar but I doubt he’d see us as a viable option and would probably be on sky high wages.

Players are over the hill at 32 are they ?? what rubbish , he’s got three seasons in him for sure , he is a class act and would add real quality to our squad .

You compound the above, with we should go for Andy Johnson , proven goal scorer when fit but there’s the rub , the last three season’s he has hardly played a game , do not forget he is 30, so he is probably over the hill anyway !!!!.

Interesting debate about the squad. Many times last season there were complaints on here that when we had a lot of injuries and went beyond the first shall we say 15 that the quality took a dip.
Now we are saying where are we going to fit all of these players in if we sign them.
I think the answer is that it’s another reason we should be glad we have a Manager that has the experience to deal with it.
Gera looks to be a player that looks after himself so not only should age not be that much of a problem but he would set a good example to the younger players.
Graham. I seem to remember when a certain Cyrille Regis arrived the manager said you can’t plunge a player in at this level straight from non-league. The fans disagreed and Cyrille forced Ronnie Allen to think again. I think the Ellington comparison is spurious as it’s all about different personalities. As someone said, Simon Cox is a better example of what can be achieved.
But LMS just to prove that I don’t always have a row with you, I think you’re spot on with Scharner.

LMS
You’re possibly right about Johnson, although I’m sure about 11 of those 21 were penalties as I remember swearing out loud each time he got one, which seemed to be almost every week at the time!! Also it remains to be seen how he’ll respond from a couple of serious injuries, as pace and running at people were his main assets. Often pacy players struggle after their 1st big injuries. I’d still prefer someone with a few more dimensions to link the game up.
I doubt Gera would be seen as a replacement for Thomas as you’re right, his pace gives us something we haven’t got. However I suspect Roy will afford us the luxury of 1 enigmatic, pacy outlet rather than 2 (i.e. not Thomas and Tchoyi on each wing), so perhaps as an alternative on the slower wing or a back-up for Dorrans if Morrison leaves?
Warren
How did I forget about all those pens?! Worst thing was I can’t remember him blatantly diving for any of them either, he just seemed to draw fouls in the box which I suppose you have to give him credit for…something Campbell also seems to have a knack for as we found out to our cost.
With regards to the use of only one pacy winger, Brunt will play every game he’s fit for and we all know the only thing lacking from Brunt’s locker is a turn of pace! I think if we had Gera and Brunt on the wings the lack of pace would see PO’s service dry up completely and as Brunt played most games for us last season would Gera be happy constantly playing second fiddle? I don’t think he’s the sort of player who would just collect a pay cheque.
Its good fun trying to guess the team for next year based on fitting in new players we have signed or been strongly linked to – but I’m so proud of my fellow baggies for resiting the temptation to produce a list of other teams players we could “take off their hands” a la laughing wolf – well done everyone !!

I’ve never said he’s over the hill, just that he won’t be the same player he was when he was with us in the prime of his career. Gera in his prime would have been able to compete with our midfield but I think we already have better options at the club now and I doubt Gers would want to sit on the bench at his age. Who would Gera replace in our starting midfield???
With regards to Johnson I said I would rather have him over Graham as he has bags of Prem experience compared to Graham’s one good season in the Championship. Personally I would rather have DJ campbell for a couple of seasons at a much lower price.
If I still played computer games at my age mate I doubt my missus would be with me!
LMS
Perhaps not, but Brunt can play centrally too in games where we may need a physical presence less? He’d certainly give us options.
Campbell- Something always bothers me about players who reach 29 and have a good season. Where has this class been for the rest of his career? 6 years ago he was playing for Hitchin. Since then, he’s had unspectacular spells for Brentford, Leicester and B’ham. Ian Holloway is known for getting the best out of players, was Blackpool a case of right club, right time for him? How do we know we’re gonna get the Blackpool Campbell and not the Birmingham one? I don’t doubt players can improve with age and I could well be wrong here, but there are still large question marks for me on that one.

The injury problems are a good point but weren’t they mainly in defence? For quite a few seasons now we’ve had an abundance of attacking midfielders and we currently have on the books – Dorrans, Cox, Morisson, Brunt, Thomas and Tchoyi with youngsters Thorne and Mantom coming through. With Barnes going that opens up space in the sqaud for another midfielder, surely it would be wiser to get some more cover for our two defensive midfielders? Although now we have Jones on board Jara will probably be used as cover there. I don’t know what Roy’s plan is, but I do know that should we suffer an injury to Scharner or Mulumbu we don’t have many options there do we as I still see Reid as primarily a full back.

LMS
Good answer about the computer games mate , Midfield 5 for me would be: Brunt , Gera, Scharner , Mulumbu and Dorrans , personally i think that looks pretty strong , of course Roy might have other ideas, but we need strength/quality in depth , Gera must be a better bet than Barnes.
Personally i would not entertain Johnson because of his injury record. As for Graham i cannot comment , not really seen him play to be honest, but 3.5 M sounds about par for the course for his status at the moment.

Warren
Very true, but I think there are more question marks over Graham than Campbell and Graham would cost over double what Campbell would. Graham just seems like too big a risk to me at the price being quoted.

I’ve read a lot about formations and personel on here. The name of the game is assembling a better squad than last season so we have options. How could a player of the quality of Gera not be needed in our squad? Thomas plays 3 then is injured for two. Cox although shows promise is still relitively unproven although i agree he is getting better and would stick with him, Scharner and Mulumbu are likely to bet suspended at some point, Dorrans has been out of form and injured for ages although i think we will see the best of him next season. Morrison has been hit and miss and the most consistant midfielder we have is probably Brunt.
Although we play 4-5-1 Roy may want to play 4-4-2 in certain games. Gera could also play as a second striker or just behind PO or Tchoyi.
I think Miller and Bednar will both go answering that debate so we need one or two strikers. DJ campabell imo is a risk, did well last season, failed at Blues. What about James McFadden as a striker from Blues? Been injured but got the pedigree?
I also believe we need a new number 1. Scott is still young but i would bring an experienced keeper in to marshall the troops. Scott would be number 2 for me.

I agree that Graham’s a risk, but I haven’t put him forward as a candidate as I don’t know enough about him. I’d personally not have hand-picked either he or Campbell, but the thing to remember is that Hodgson knows what he wants and knows a lot more than us.
One thing about Graham, he’s made his name on the back of a few goals in the Championship. I don’t doubt for one minute that given service and 46 games, Simon Cox would score 25-30 goals in the Championship. I hope Graham’s being viewed as bringing more than just that to the table, as Happy alludes to, that 1 upfront needs to have a lot about them for us in this division I think or else our whole functionality as a side could break down quite easily.

Up until our first Prem. prom. I was sat in the Halfords (then) where the players come out. Poured my tea using the wall as a table. Loved everyone around us, especially the ladies. Reduced price for 65s in those days. Then we got booted out AFTER renewing for that season as they needed the space for the visiting teams. We ended up in the East Stand where you get a reduction for age. Super view where we are with two minor snags. The sun can be a pain and the low floodlights on the West Stand are always a pain. When the West is extended let’s hope they put those lights higher up. If you have to move for price reduction I can recommend the East and it is quite ‘refined’ if you don’t want to sing your heart out. I pay £329 East Upper old git price. Great crowd of people around us too. One day we shall exchange names when all the speakers explode! Oh, and you’ll need a peaked cap to help exclude those lights. I look totally saft in mine but I don’t give a toss.

Good point regarding Ellington and Cox.
Ellington refused to leave his home in Manchester.
Cox travels quite a distance every day to training also.
The difference is Cox turned down a loan to Ipswich despite it being closer to home whilst Ellington couldn’t wait to get out. Although that wasn’t directly your point I think their respective attitude comes across in games.

If it’s not already been mentioned, there’s a video on YouTube called ‘Danny Graham-float like a butterfly’,showing all his 27 goals from last season.
Most of them seem to involve him running through pretty large gaps in defences, then side-footing the ball home, nothing spectacular.
It’s debatable if he’d get the same time and space in the prem.,but at least he seems to know how to shoot straight and take his opportunities, which is all you can do.
I have a feeling he could be a gamble,so I doubt if Albion will get involved in a bidding war.
After a certain valuation has passed,we would probably drop out and leave him to Swansea.
