Albion release three and keep two
Wednesday 25th May 2011, 10:30AM BST.
Albion have handed Roman Bednar a shock reprieve by extending his Hawthorns contract – but Abdoulaye Meite has been axed.
The Baggies sprang two surprises today by activating one-year options on Bednar and Marek Cech with the duo now tied to the club until next summer.
But Meite paid the price for a poor end to the season as he was shown the door, along with Gianni Zuiverloon and Giles Barnes.
Both Bednar and Cech were expected to be released this summer, with Bednar having ended this season on loan at Turkish top-flight side Ankaragucu.
But they have been kept on by the Baggies, with Cech seen as effective back-up to first-choice left-back Nicky Shorey.
Bednar could still be sold with the Baggies’ decision to activate his contract option protecting his transfer value to the club, but the Czech Republic international will be told he has a chance to force his way into Roy Hodgson’s plans if he impresses in pre-season.
Meite, who joined for £1.5million from Bolton in 2008, has been let go along with Zuiverloon, who cost £3.2million when he signed from Dutch club Heerenveen during the same summer.
Barnes, who joined Albion on a free transfer last summer, has been unable to find the form that made him a highly-rated youngster at Derby.
Sporting and technical director, Dan Ashworth, said: “These decisions are never easy, nor are they taken lightly, but we believe they are the right ones for the football club.
“Abdoulaye played an important role in the last 11 games in helping the team achieve safety, which came on the back of his contribution to our promotion success last season.
“Gianni did very well in the early part of his first season in the Premier League two years ago and also figured prominently last season – but he has found first-team chances much harder to come by this term.
“Giles was involved in some key moments towards the end of last season’s promotion but, like Gianni, has not featured as often as he would have liked this season.”
Albion have also told Canadian striker Marcus Haber they will not be taking up the one-year option on his contract.
But Haber will stay at the club to complete his rehabilitation from a knee injury and could yet earn a deal if he impresses in training.

I must say i`m moderately surprised by the inclusion of Bednar and the exclusion of Zuiverloon.
I can only imagine that Roy has someone in mind for the right back berth, apart from the inexperienced Hurst we have Reid & Jara neither of whom are “natural” right back`s, and we know Roy`s penchant for square pegs in square holes.
There are a few more i expected to be heading out that have not been named, maybe that`s a contractual thing.

The path is now clearing for new signings to come in. No real surprises to date.

Got to say I’m suprised – thought Zuivi was worth a year and Meite could have been a decent squad player – but pleased that Tamas & Pablo are being retained.
Suprised also about Cech and Bednar – not sure Roman is good enough now at this level and I thought Cech would be asking to go… but cleverer people than me make these decisions so I back us 100% !!

Another “belter” from the dark side.
Wolves most glorious defeat.
Where do they get them from?.
Absolutely delighted that Bednar is staying. I really hope that he is genuinely being given a chance and is not just being given a contract to provide a transfer fee.
Zuvi is the disappointment as he started so well, but he has not impressed on the few opportunities that he has had since so probably the right decision.
I know most people on here think Shorey is head and shoulders (not literally obviously) above Cech but I don’t agree. Shorey is a better defender which is why he got the nod at the end of this season, but Cech is an all round better player and gives us options in other positions.
Amyway I’ll shut up now before anyone accuses me of having a fixation with people from the former Czechoslovakia.

I cant see too many big name signings for the Braggies, but Roy H is no mug when it comes to signing players that can bring stability into a team.
I think WBA have now shook off the yo yo tag and can look forward to becoming a permanent resident in the Premiership, I do hope so, I shall always look towards my only other Favourite club and watch with great anticipation and admiration.
7 – how can you say we won’t be signing big names ?? We all know we won’t be signing messi or Ronaldo but I’m sure we will be looking at some decent players – but as Villa have shown over the years… big names don’t always equal success.
I said all along that the 3 mentioned should be released it wasnt rocket science, they have done a job and I thank them for that but we need to move forward.
In regards to big name players? that doesnt bother me, what I dont want is the collectiveness in the dressing room to change, I think that is more important than a player for 10 million on huge wages who thinks they are the bees knees and annoy the lads that train and perform to the best of their ability.
we have an amazing manager, sporting director and chairman, come august we will be in a stronger position.

5 THE HOFF
You must be Roman and Marech’s agent mate . Cech an all round better player than Shorey ??? entitled to that opinion of course, but i doubt if the majority would agree with you .
By any chance do you rate Carson , think Jara is a good right back and would have retained Meite/Zuiverloon / Barnes ????.If you answer yes to any of those questions , then i would question your judgement.
In Roy and Jez we trust.
I can only think that perhaps we don’t have sufficient cover for the left-back and target man positions (maybe Fortune’s off?) and we don’t want to sell before we buy.
I just can’t see Roy taking to Cech as a left-back, not solid enough. Unless perhaps he sees him as a midfielder.
Oldburyite
What about Luke Young? Does he still want out?!
If Giles was not bad enough in the FA Cup exit at Reading, he was truly terrible when he came on against West Ham. His highlight, for me, was winning the breakthrough penalty at Swansea (converted by Dorrans) in the last promotion season.
Zuiverloon is the only player I can think of, apart from the hapless Luke Moore, on which we’ve taken a real hit: £3.25 million down the drain. But he looked so good, when he started, I didn’t think we would be able to hang on to him for more than a season. The mysteries of peaking too early, I suppose.
Miete did not do enough to eradicate the memory of him deciding to come off, because he had pulled a muscle, just as Chelsea were about to take a corner at a Boxing Day match on our last occasion in the Prem. He simply walked off the pitch, with just a vague signal to the bench, leaving us down to ten men for the next three minutes. This was during his first year of a three-year contract, of couse. He only really showed enthusiasm when the contract was up, echoing Gary Megson’s view, at Bolton, that he was “the laziest player I have worked with.”
Roman has been held, presumably, to sell on. Marek Cech is, indeed, left sided cover – not too sure for whom. That man is no full back. Look at this year’s fixtures in the programme and see how many points we squandered when he, inexplicably, took the shirt from Nicky Shorey. Cech’s agent is no longer making noises about him leaving the club, is he? There wouldn’t be many takers.
But, on balance, good decisions.
I’m not that surprised with these decisions to be honest. I’ve said for many weeks, even during his up turn in performances, that Meite simply isn’t good enough – there is always a clanger around the corner (proved in the last few games) and he can’t be trusted/ relied upon. Zuiverloon, although still young, really has shown me very little that he is good enough at this level. A costly and most disappointing signing. As for Barnes – no surprise there, simply not good enough (although thought he was worth a go when we picked him up initially).
Cech – I agree with Warren – think Hodgson sees limited cover in this position and more pressing positions to fill in the squad. Looks like he’s set to be back up for Shorey next season.
Bednar – I was a little surprised we have kept him on as like Happy_Baggie I don’t think he is good enough. Most likely indicates we’ll off-load one or two that we have – maybe Miller and Fortune?
Has there been any news on the Valero situation?
Bednar is the big surprise for me, it was reported that his loan was with the view of it being permanent. Just shows that transfers these days are clouded in mystery and not to believe everything thats reported.
If we look at the players released, to me it seems that common sense calls have been made on them.
Meite has improved immensely recently, but is still error prone.
Zuiverloon started off magnificently and looked like he could be a world beater, but has since flattered to deceive.
Barnes has not been the player that I remember at Derby County before all of his injuries and hasn’t really added anything to the team.
Marcus Haber isn’t good enough and I think everyone at the club knew this, but hoped that he would be one for the future.
I’m very surprised that Bednar and Cech have been retained.
Cech must just be cover for Shorey, and Bednars’ inclusion means that there must be at least one of the strikers leaving this Summer so he’s been kept to ensure we’re not too short on numbers and get desperate for strikers when the new season arrives.
I can see Myhill (or Carson), Mattock, Miller, and possibly Ibanez being sold as well as these players being released.
I’d look to bring in a Goalkeeper, a specialist Right Back, another Centre Back, an attacking Midfielder and at least one Striker too. Not saying the players we have there are poor players, but if we can improve these positions for the squad over a long hard season, then I would.
I wonder what happened to Zuiverloon’s career as when he came he looked exceptional with Man U monitoring his progress . He also captained Holland at junior level. I suppose that just like horses some players just don’t train on . Shame. Perhaps he might return to Ipswich or go back to Holland . I am sure we all wish him well.
There’s always gonna be mixed reactions to players coming in or going out,but the best time to make a judgement is at the end of August, when we have the completed squad for next season.
I think it’s important to see the whole picture, because we have Roy in the centre, responsible for shaping and motivating the squad, with Appy giving him his opinion on individual players,Ashworth looking for new blood, and JP watching the finances.
Between them, they have 3 months to put together something that they’re all happy with, and although one or two decisions are bound to be controversial,I’d say they’ve done a pretty good job so far,in which case we have to trust in what they do.
And as for spending big,Peter O.,Mulumbu,Tchoyi,Dorrans,Reid and Scharner probably cost about 5 mil. in total transfer fees, less than wolves paid for Doyle.
So we know we can get quality without paying the earth, right?

I too am surprised and disappointed that we are letting Zuiverloon go, I think he has all the tools to be a really good player.
6 Jack
If Bednar and Cech are being retained to protect there transfer value surely the same should have been done with Zuiverloon, he has to be worth something!
Unless of course he was one of the big wage earners and the figures just didn’t stack up?

Warren was making a point yesterday, not detrimentaly, that McAauly was not a “marquee” signing…..our marquee signings have been made when they are WHO ?

No, I don’t rate Carson at all, but I do think Jara is a good player despite what has been a poor season at right back.
Both Cech and Jara have good international experience and add versatility to the squad.
I just don’t see Hodgson playing with an out and out wide player like Thomas week in week out next season and Cech would fit the bill as a player who could play wide but with more of a defensive attitude.
Regarding other players to offload, Miller would be top of my list. Completely one footed, lacking composure in front of goal, hopeless in the air despite his size…..need I go on.

How about we sign Odemwingie? Surely he would the chance to play for a “proper club” in JOH’s words.
I can see three problems with this statement, (besides the obvious)
1)Given Wolves only have a stated total 18 mil budget to spend, they couldn’t afford him.
2) Given as Laughinwolf was boasting the other day they have the second lowest wage bill in the league, they couldn’t afford him.
3) If JOH considers Wolves a proper club as opposed to Spurs, would you trust the guys opinion/judgment on anything?

Sometimes players are released because of what they do, NOT what they don’t do. We would not know for sure what they get up to at night, what time they roll in for training, (if at all with some). For super fit athletes, one might expect a ‘super alertness of mind’ too. Remember a certain player who was picked for a match one evening and ‘forgot to turn up’?
I’m with Happy on this topic, leave these decisions to the professionals. They can be wrong, but they are closer.

I can straight away see at least one other problem if Peter O. signed for ‘them’-
when the wolves fans saw his pace and silky skills on the pitch, they’d realise just how bad the rest of the squad were in comparison to him,and there’d be a riot.
But then again, some wolves fans(not all)think that now they’ve managed to scrape back into the prem.,3 minutes before the end of the season, that they can go out and buy anybody they like the look of.
They probably think that THEY should REALLY be the one’s playing Barcelona this weekend.

Players will only be released if Hodgson thinks he can replace them with someone better or, importantly, he has been told to reduce the wage bill. Meite and Zuiverloon are both big earners and I guess that Hodgson has been told to get rid. After watching last nights Northern Ireland defensive debacle I’m inclined to think that Mcauley isn’t the best of signings. A decent enough squad player but certainly nothing like the defensive rebuilding that is required.

I really hope they let Fortune go out on loan. Bednar is a better striker IMO and actually looks to get involved in the game whilst on the pitch.

I stopped watching EastEnders years ago, because it was so depressing.Everytime you switched on,it was fighting, arguing,or daggered looks.
Going over to the wolves site always reminds me what it was like.A definite humour by-pass there.
But you do find unintentional humour.
One guy has made a ‘little league’,from Midland derbies, putting wolves top with 11 points to Albion’s 10,proving to himself that ‘wolves are really the champiuuuuns!’.
And shadrag has met his ‘soulmate’.
‘Andy wolf’ made a long list of next season’s squad,so he filled in the gaps.
And it looks like he still wants Neil Warnock in defence.

Excellent point. Large transfer fees are only necessary in certain situations like when your manager has identified a particular target who has all the attributes he’s looking for and is highly likely to be the “final piece in the jigsaw” or your Man City!
Merely paying a large fee for a player because you can, often ends in disappointment.
The game is absolutely littered with examples of both players not living up to big fees and bargain players going on to have fantastic careers. Still puzzles me how so many supporters seem to see the size of a players transfer fee as some kind of benchmark as to how good they’re going to be!

Bougherra has always been a player I have rated, and a swap for Berra would be a great move. Roger Johnson is also a great shout, and I would definately love him plus dann plus ridgewell, or any combination of the three. and gardener/noble for the left back spot also sounds good.
There seems to be a general consensus that the should ‘take’ Foster, Johnson, Dann Ridgewell and Gardner from Blues. I’m not sure if this is because no one else has thought of it or that Wolves would be every players first choice. Sturridge on loan is another. If Chelsea decide to loan him out again why would he go to Wolves?
CR78.
The Midlands mini league has been running for a while over there, apparently it makes them better than Villa as well as us. But there is a new one now ‘we’ve been in the PL for three consecutive seasons, Albion haven’t done that.’ Totally ignoring that our little club has more PL seasons under our belt or the minor matter that they achieved this by scraping in during the last ten minutes of the last match which they lost.
Like the first cuckoo of the spring, I’d like to record the first Wulfie boasting that they’ll finish above us (just like last season.) Enter Farmer Ted and his embarrassing attempt at patronising a Baggie.
