Somen Tchoyi hoping for a new start

Hat-trick hero Somen Tchoyi hopes he can use his Albion treble as the springboard to more first-team action at The Hawthorns.

The Cameroon international’s unlikely treble earned Roy Hodgson’s men a 3-3 draw from 3-0 down at Newcastle yesterday.

And the 28-year-old, who made just his seventh Premier League start at St James’ Park, hopes his memorable efforts yesterday will be the launch pad for a brighter second season.

“My plan is to stay with Albion and see what happens and I hope I get more time to play,” said the £2.5m summer signing from Red Bull Salzburg.

“That is my plan. The gaffer just told me to keep training as a professional and keep hoping my chance will come and that’s what I will do. It is my first hat-trick and I am very pleased with it. I do it in training but this is my first professional hat-trick.”

And Tchoyi insisted he never admitted defeat in yesterday’s game despite his side going 3-0 down just after half-time.

He said: “I don’t know about the others but for me I haven’t had enough time on the pitch and it was a chance to play and show what I can do. I still believed.

“I think the whole team played well to get back from 3-0 down and draw 3-3.”

Hodgson said: “I’m hoping there will be more of that. When I came in he’d hardly played. He started the season later because he had problems getting his work permit.

“So, really I inherited a person that didn’t have many games behind him.

“Yesterday was the chance to give him another opportunity and he took it absolutely brilliantly. No doubt he will go away on holiday thinking I couldn’t spot a footballer if he bit me on the nose!”
