Newcastle 3 Albion 3
Sunday 22nd May 2011, 5:55PM BST.
A hat-trick from Somen Tchoyi sealed a remarkable Albion comeback as they ended their season with a battling point at St James’ Park.
The Cameroon international headed a 90th-minute equaliser as the Baggies fought back from 3-0 down after 47 minutes to draw 3-3 on Tyneside.
A scrappy Steven Taylor goal put Newcastle ahead before an error from Scott Carson allowed Peter Lovenkrands to double the lead and Jonas Olsson’s own-goal early in the second half made it 3-0.
But Tchoyi gave Albion hope when he raced onto Steven Reid’s through-ball to make it 3-1 and he set up a grandstand finish when he seized on Jonas Olsson’s flick-on to reduce the arrears to a single goal.
And in the final minute Tchoyi produced a diving header to convert a cross by Olsson and earn his side a point.
Albion should have been ahead on seven minutes when Newcastle full-back Jose Enrique was caught in possession by Somen Tchoyi on the byline.
The winger’s pull-back found Marc-Antoine Fortune, whose shot from the edge of the six-yard box was on target but was kept out brilliantly on the line by sprawling centre-half Steven Taylor.
But it was the hosts who took the lead on 16 minutes with a slightly freakish goal from a corner by Joey Barton.
Jonas Olsson’s header hit Tchoyi and rebounded back into the danger zone, Peter Lovenkrands outjumped Paul Scharner to win a header and Steven Taylor turned smartly on the goalline and forced the ball home.
There were half-chances at both ends but Newcastle doubled their advantage on 39 minutes courtesy of an error by Scott Carson.
Shola Ameobi’s flick on found Lovenkrands and, although the Albion keeper did well to get a hand to the Dane’s shot, he failed to push it over the bar and it dropped over the line.
Fortune had another shot blocked on the line by Taylor but it was 3-0 early in the second-half as Jose Enrique delivered a hopeful cross to the Baggies’ near post and watched Olsson inexplicably divert it past the helpless Carson.
But the Baggies reduced the arrears on 62 minutes when Tchoyi sprang a flat Magpies back four to race onto Steven Reid’s high ball and slide a low shot past Tim Krul in the home goal.
And they gave their fans hope of a turnaround with 18 minutes remaining thanks to Tchoyi’s second goal of the game.
Chris Brunt’s reverse pass found Steven Reid and, when his cross was flicked on by Olsson, Tchoyi turned Coloccini before lashing a shot into the roof of the net.
The comeback was complete in the last minute when Ishmael Miller’s backheal set up Olsson, whose cross was headed home by Tchoyi.n

Great come back, Well done Baggies this has been a great season.

A draw snatched from the jaws of a defeat. well done Somen man of the match ! great summer break to look forward to now and cant wait for next season. Well done to everyone at the club, some great moments to remember.

Well played boys superb character to back from 3-0 down, fabulous hat-trick from Tchoyi. We’ve had a fantastic season, this game has eptomised our whole season I think, no problem scoring goals, inability to defend corners but overall, superb character and team that doesn’t know when it’s beaten.
The highlight for me is the win over Villa despite being down to 10 men, we’ve gone about our football in the right way and in vast majority of games we’ve had a go, even at places like Old Trafford and The Emirates.
Thanks to Di Matteo, we shouldn’t forget what he did at the start, getting us promoted and helping us towards some memorable reults, though his inexperience told in the end. Jeremy Peace made a very brave decision to change managers but that decision has been vindicated emphatically. Well done to Roy Hodgson, the backroom staff and not least to the players for a brilliant season.
Hodgson, Peace and Dan Ashworth need to put their heads together and decide on what players need to go and what areas of the team need improvement. I don’t think any fan would argue that our defence needs serious attention, but other than that just we just need to add to the depth of the squad.
Well played, very proud Baggie!!

Fantastic fightback, this team NEVER lies down.

It’s been a great season, fantastic entertainment even from 2000 miles away.
Looking forward to next season already, congrats to the Wolves for staying up (pencil in 6 easy points for us nest season), commisserations to the Blues.

Another “First” for the BAGGY Braves, a hat-trick by the Tchoyi boy, as I’ve said earlier, he needs water under the bridge. I’d still like to see him in a central role, instead of playing wide. Just wait until he’s had a good run. Roy, now has a clear view of who to keep and who to move on. I don’t think there’ll be many surprises. This squad doesn’t know the meaning of lay down. A brilliant eleventh position achieved, which I never dreamed we could attain, beginning of the season. Saying all and sundry said we would be relegated. Well done to all at WEST***BROMWICH***ALBION, and thanks a million.

Maybe it’s a fitting way to sign off, because the first game Roy Hodgson witnessed after agreeing to take on the job,saw a second half 3-goal collapse against West Ham,now a dozen games later,it’s us that have the guts and fighting spirit to get those three second half goals back.
5 wins and 5 draws out the last 12 games can’t be bad,can it?
And I’m still fascinated by Tchoyi.I don’t think even he knows what he’s gonna do next, fall over his own feet,or produce a piece of sublime magic.
I’d love to see Kanu return, and play up front with Tchoyi.
The opposing defence wouldn’t know which way to turn,it’d be like watching a strange dance ritual with legs and feet in all directions.
Weird.

So very proud of my Baggie Boys this season. At the start of the season, after the drubbing by Chelsea, who would have thought we would end up 11th! Brilliant performances on the whole after wobble in the middle, but how great not to have to worry about relegation at the end. Great battling performance yesterday, and kept our record of never losing on final day. Need to get some quality players going for next season. Onwards and Upwards!!!! Great win over Villa very memorable, only down point was losing to our Staffordshire neighbours which kept them up!

Well done albion on a great season, its really good to see Roy annoyed that we only got a draw a newcastle due to a couple of silly goals, usual albion mentality is we did well there to get a draw after going 3 nil down, a new era with Roy wanting more !!
On another note well done to the dingles, looking forward to next years banter !!
And to all the villa fans who are now boasting that they are the biggest club in the midlands, you have to to give albion credit where credits due, it was a close battle !!
bring on 2011/2012 !

Brilliant season. Thank you Albion. Dann or and Johnson would be a welcome addition in the summer with Meite on his way along with some of the other defenders. Under Roy I’d expect good value for money coming in this summer.

I watched all this game except the first few minutes. Can’t agree with Hallgreen that Tchoyi was the worst player first half, you could have picked any one from eleven! It looked like we were in for a towelling in spite of having two efforts cleared off the line. Newcastle were quicket to every second ball, moved fluidly and overall, 3-0 was a fair score. Then there was our new centre forward Tchoyi. Well, he seemed to operate better there and Fortuné moved wider. Newcastle’s defence soiled their pants each time he got the ball. Had it gone on another 10 minutes, we would have won. Olsson was everywhere after his bad og, inspiring, heading, passing, front and back. Ibanez made some telling interceptions and clearances.
A game of two halves ? No, a game of two teams in two halves, both dressed in red. One a shower of ****. The other well drilled and inspired.
If ever someone was to get a hatrick then Tchoiy would never enter my mind but excellent and maybe given more of a run would have got us a few more goals.
Anyway 11th is good enough as I’d have took 16th at the start of the season.
Unlucky Birmingham I though you were home and dry.

Some of you guys like to have a flutter at the turf accountant.
So imagine this-
Before yesterday’s game, you walk into the Bookies, and say to the Manager-
‘I’d like to bet that Newcastle are 3-0 up,with less than half the game to go,and Albion get a 3-3 draw with a last minute equaliser.
Ishmael Miller races to the line, then back heels the ball to Jonas Olsson, who’s running down the left wing, and he sends over a perfect cross from near the corner flag, that’s headed into the net by Somen Tchoyi to complete his hat-trick.
What odds will you give me on this happening?’
After he stops laughing,he quotes you a figure that contains many zeros, and takes your £10 stake.
This morning, you go to see him,and leave the shop struggling to push a wheelbarrow piled high with a mountain of dosh.
Oh how I wish I had a magical crystal ball………

Fantastic season. Very proud to be a Baggie. Wouldn’t mind testing Blues with a bid for Johnson. Him and Olsson could be a cracking partnership.
I think the Johnson scenario is the same as the Samba one, clubs with a lot more money will be in for him and Dann. Apparently we’re on the brink of signing McCauley from Ipswich but I wouldn’t expect him to be the last defender to come in.
At the other end of the pitch apparently DJ Campbell is available for £1.25 mill. Anybody else like the look of him? I think he’d suit our style well. Demba Ba would give us the option of a bit more height as well as being very mobile. I think if we had those two along with PO and Simon Cox I’d be very happy for next season.

Well done on staying up.
I feel a bit sorry for Blues and Blackpool after our show of Black Country solidarity, giving you the three points to let you stay up but as Kylie says ‘neighbours, everybody needs good neighbours.’
On the subject of Kylie, you went from
Men Without Hats – Safety Dance to
Status Quo – Down Down to
Kylie – Lucky Lucky Lucky
All in the space of 90 minutes.
Saw the big banner on the pitch at the end. Luckily they had it the right way round, I’d love to have seen the reverse camera angle though, I bet at half time the ‘You’ve Let Us Down Again’ side was primed and ready to be rolled out.

Demba Ba will probably fit into the same catagory as the Blues pair and Samba in the money aspect, although i would like to get him.
McCauley is the tough as old boots player we need, and we may have a prodigy on our hands with Dawson.
DJ at that price HAS to be worth a punt, and i expect a couple of Ashworth “specials” through the in door.

I read an interview with Roy saying that he had to reassess his view of Somen Tchoyi after yesterday. He was typically self depreciating, saying ‘he (Tchoyi) must be thinking I couldn’t recognise a good footballer if he bit me on the nose.’ With this in mind I wonder if he may also have another think about Pablo.
Tremendous performance yesterday as the National Media seem to have us down as a one man (PO) team. Got this result without PO, JT, Tamas, Graham Dorrans, Simon Cox is there anyone I’ve forgot?
Isn’t Mark Halsey a good ref. Not that he gets everything right but he uses so much common sense. Foy, Dowd and Clattenberg should be made to sit and watch film of him and then of themselves, although they’re such prima donnas I doubt they would understand.
PS. The last Baggie to score a hat-trick in this fixture was Bomber. Spooky or what?

Finally, I’ll say thanks to the eight players I believe have played their last for the Albion.

Great come back lads !!
Was the 2nd goal Carsons fault ?? or was it that Meite headed a routine header straight up into the air and then missed the 2nd header leaving a point blank shot to be hit at him? i thought he well in getting his hand to it initially.
players out – Meite, Zuiverloon, Barnes, Miller, Cech, Myhill, Fortune
Players In – Ba & Johnson
Would it be worth looking at using Tchoyi as a striker fulltime, he’s big and holds ball up better than Miller & Fortune and knows where the goal is ? just a thought.

I think he saw the Vine photoshoot as his best chance of becoming a national ‘celebrity’,but the ‘finger up the nose’ image published in the press, and shown to millions worldwide on the net,has ruined any credibility he previously had.
Last I heard,he was hiding in a country mansion, being comforted by his ‘minders’ and entourage.
Or rather, staying at his Auntie’s house on the edge of Sandwell Valley, with the next door neighbour and his cat to keep him company.

Chris,
Been saying it for ages, love to see him (Tchoyi) alongside Osaze. Do you know, I saw a bit of Jeff Astle in his play, y’know, that confident swagger after scoring. Also some of his movement. Don’t know how others feel!. Although there were some crazy-legs early on, we turned it around after. Notably through Olsson.

on the other issue,Pablo has played 20-odd times for World Champions Spain, and partnered the Barcelona Captain in central defence,so you feel the guy must surely have some ability?

I can’t really remember him doing much wrong on the pitch,so yes, give him more opportunities in the future.

As a general rule, I never leave football matches earlier. Yesterday my housemate offered me a lift back to Manchester at 3-0 otherwise I’d have been on the train, after a heavy weekend’s drinking and with the game drifting away, I reluctantly agreed…….what a great decision that proved to be!! To add insult to injury, I was unable to collect my bag from the luggage point and had to wait for the train after all…….
Many positives and negatives yesterday but it gives Roy plenty of food for thought and you’d like to think he’ll know where we need to strengthen.
Chris
I couldn’t agree more. I had a blazing row with the bloke in front who crucified Carson for their 2nd. This has been argued a million times on here before, but as a case in point, this bloke failed to acknowledge that Meite fluffed an aimless diagonal ball and Olsson let Lovenkrands go. I guess it’s what you want to believe. About 5 minutes later Carson made a decent save…….bloke did nothing.

Apparently Gareth McCauley has signed. I would have looked on him as a bit of a makeshift signing normally but as he’s been chased and snapped up Roy must really see something in him.
Interesting that we’re looking at Carlton Cole. I was surprised to see he’s still only 27. I remember when he played on loan for Villa against us years ago. He looked a World beater for 15 minutes and then disappeared. I think he’s improved over the years as he has grown up mentally. Could be his best years are still to come.
We’re also supposed to be close to signing Brad` Friedel, might be that he doesn’t want to re-locate again. Good to see that we’re trying to get the shopping done early.

It`s becoming apparent that those of us who think that Carson is a worthy keeper, are in a minority.
I have just been reading the E&S Albion spread, and they ask …….Has Carson sealed his fate with his latest blunder.
I feel to call this a Carson blunder is incredibly harsh, indeed i feel he was unlucky after producing a brilliant reflex save.
Furthermore, i am unconvinced that the ball had crossed the line, it remained unclarified on Sky Sports, who for once didn`t analyze it to death.

Sadly I think it’ll take the new keeper to drop a couple of clangers before some realise there is no such thing as a faultless goalkeeper. Like many, I’ve never suggested Carson’s infallable, just not sure there are many out there realistically that are immeasurably better.
TRBH
Sadly no sign of Max, although there was a Kev sat right near me who jumped in to the debate on my side to defend Carson. It got a bit heated in the end, thought they were gonna come to blows.
On Carlton Cole, he’s always looked as though he’s got an all-around game to go right to the top, but as you suggest, you seem to see it far too infrequently. I’d take him as an Odemwingie back-up. Moving away from the bright lights of London, Roy’s guidance might benefit him and at 27 he could flourish but we’ll have to see I guess.
We were after Marcus Berg last year, he’s coming to the end of a 1-year loan with PSV (I think) so be interested to see if his name pops up again. Roy has a history of liking Scandanavian players.

I think McCauly is just what we need – a big powerful lad to go through any number of players to win a header or throw himself in the way when needed.
This is a million miles away from TM’s philosophy of every player must be a ball player – we have plenty of those but we need more people who will put a head in where it hurts.
Be interesting to see if he will be a starter or a squad player cos I have a feeling there will be quite a few in’s and out’s this year.h

GK- Westwood (Coventry), Almunia (Arsenal), Green (West Ham)
DF- L.Young (Villa), Bosingwa (Chelsea), Vandenborre (Genk- formerly of Pompey), Spector (West Ham), Jones (Preston), Olsson (Blackburn), Upson (West Ham)
MD- Reo-Coker (Villa), Bowyer (Blues), Vaughan (Blackpool), Hargreaves (Man U), Gera (Fulham), Larsson (Blues), Kightly (Massive club)
FW- Carew (Villa), Elmander (Bolton), Owen (Man U), Obinha (West Ham)
I should say before I get shot down, this is a list I found, not a personal selection.
I think Luke Young would be a good signing at right-back. Plenty have spoken about Westwood before. Haven’t seen a lot of Obinna, decent CV though. Any other thoughts?

It looked to me like Carson did well to get his hand to the ball in the first place, and if he’d been a couple of feet further back,it would have probably gone over the bar.
Also, watching the TV highlights, after Scott had caught the ball, and was kneeling on the goal line, the linesman was still running back towards the corner flag, and when he got there,he indicated to the Ref. that the ball had gone over the line.
If he was still running back at the time the ball was dropping, how could he tell whether or not it had crossed the line?
If there’s any doubt, you surely can’t give such an important decision.

Happy- I think you’re spot on. We do still have a problem defending balls into our box, far too often Jonas wins it or the opposition win it. McAuley might not have been the first name on everybody’s lips but would we have conceded 2 off set pieces at Wolves with him in the back four, or 1 yesterday and another from a diagonal high ball?? Who knows, but it’ll nice to have that option when we play some of the more direct teams. Be interesting to have a look at this Craig Dawson too…..

Following on from Campell, yes or no, being reported in Blackpool that Fergie is to come in for Adam, who Fergie is quoted has saying “his set pieces alone are worth 10 million”
1.25 million for Campell really is a steal.

We havent had a good defence since we have been in the prem, i feel our midfield is quite strong and with dorrans to come back its like a new signing!!
We need a few more players and i think with roy in charge and the way we play we can attract better players.
Keeper – Kuszczak, Green, Frediel, Foster??
Defence – McAuley (signed), Dann, R.Johnson, Upson, L.Young
Mid – Any ideas i think we may need 1-2 players not big signing but we need more competition for the current midfield.Larson or Gardner?
Forwards – Ba, Cole, Obinna
There are others i thought of but didnt put them down cause we simply wont pay the wages which i suposed is good as this dont cause disruption and jealousy in the camp.
Anyone have any thoughts on these players or any other players we might be linked with?

Interestingly, when Roy Hodgson was in charge of Liverpool, they were strongly linked with a move for Scott Dann, and after Birmingham’s game at Liverpool early in the season, Roy publicly praised both Dann and Roger Johnson for “making life difficult for Torres”.

Also interesting:
Fulham were heavily linked with Marcus Berg when Roy Hodgson was in charge there according to reputable sports media sources……well the main one. A player we were heavily linked with last summer, who is presumably still on our radar and who’s just coming to the end of a one-year loan deal at PSV.
Likewise, were Liverpool not linked with Carlton Cole earlier in the season?
