Brunt: Albion survival is great achievement
Saturday 21st May 2011, 5:00PM BST.
Captain Chris Brunt has urged Albion to end their season on a high at Newcastle — but says nothing that happens tomorrow will take the gloss off a stunning campaign.
The Baggies will complete their fixtures on Tyneside safe from the pressure of Survival Sunday thanks to a superb surge to safety under Roy Hodgson.
Skipper Brunt is keen to end the campaign a victory but is conscious that the club’s season is already a guaranteed success story with an eighth-place finish still possible if results go in their favour and they defeat Alan Pardew’s side.
“We have only got positives to take out of the season because anything above 18th was success for us this season — just staying out of that relegation zone,” said Brunt, who has taken over as skipper for the impressive end to the campaign.
“So to have the chance of finishing in the top-10 is a massive achievement for the club.
“If we can finish eighth it would probably mean a couple of million pounds in prize money and the chairman would obviously like that.
“But it’s going to be difficult. Newcastle won’t want to go out on a low, especially at home in the last game of the season.
“There will be a big crowd there and I’m sure it will be a good atmosphere for the last game and it’s down to us to go there and try to get a result.
“That’s what we’ve been doing under the new manager — going to places and doing a job.”
While the season’s main mission was completed with three games remaining, Brunt would still love to end with a victory in the north east tomorrow.
The Baggies take on the side that pipped them to the Championship title last season looking to complete a fourth ‘double’ of a fine season, having already beaten Birmingham, Sunderland and Everton at home and away.
And the Northern Ireland international reckons a win on the final day would send Albion into their summer break in high spirits.
“If we can win the game there is a chance the club can finish higher up the league, which means more bonus money for the club,” he said.
“Players are playing for next season and we’ve got to try to finish on a high this season. We can’t just let the season peter out.
“You’re only as good as your last game and that’s the one you remember. If we could finish the season on a high it would give us a bit of confidence going into the summer break.
“We could go away and enjoy ourselves and come back and work hard in pre-season looking forward to the Premier League again, coming off the back of a win rather than a defeat.”
While Blackburn, Wolves, Birmingham, Blackpool and Wigan are gearing up for the potential agonies of a final-day fight against relegation, the Baggies are ready for a relaxed game at St James’ Park.
That is quite a feat, given that they looked to be heading for the drop zone when Hodgson inherited a side in freefall from Roberto Di Matteo in February. But, despite the worrying period around Christmas, Brunt will take predominantly happy memories from his second season in the Premier League.
“All the lads will probably tell you that the December and January period was a tough one for everybody, especially December because we were still playing reasonably well and not getting results,” said the Northern Ireland winger.
“Once you get into that run of form and can’t get any points it’s difficult to pick it up, and even when we played Blackpool at The Hawthorns and won we still didn’t play particularly well.
“We were shipping goals for fun and it was looking pretty dismal at one point. I would say that was the only period of this season when I wasn’t enjoying playing football and that’s because of the results we were getting.
“But there have been other times this season when we haven’t picked results up but I have thoroughly enjoyed the games.
“I can think about Liverpool at Anfield and Manchester United at home, when we lost but did well.
“I think we have given a good account of ourselves for most of the season and I have enjoyed it a lot because I have been involved a lot more than I was last time. If you looked at our fixtures over March and April, it was a difficult period. Yet that’s probably the most successful period we’ve had when we picked up the most points.
“That sums up our season. When we played the teams that were down and around us we haven’t picked up as many points as we should have.
“But we have probably punched above our weight against the teams that were supposed to beat us.”

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
