Bombers to raid Newcastle

Thousands of fans will honour Albion legend Tony Brown at Newcastle tomorrow as the Baggies celebrate Premier League survival with a fancy dress party.

Almost 3,000 Albion supporters will travel to Tyneside with many dressing up after the final day of the season was declared ‘Newcastle Brown Day’ in honour of the club’s record goalscorer.

Mask-arade, a company co-owned by Baggies fan Dean Walton, has produced thousands of Brown masks but many fans have produced their own ‘Bomber’ outfits depicting his trademark 1970s and 80s perm and moustache.

The 65-year-old, who attends every Albion game as a radio pundit, said: “It’s a great honour that the fans are making me this year’s fancy dress theme and it’s great that, after all these years, they still remember me and want to do things like this.

“It’s a great bit of fun and it’s nice that the fans can have a party on the final day with no pressure because we’re safe from relegation.”

Head coach Roy Hodgson said: “What a marvellous tribute it is to a legend and a marvellous endorsement of his career and everything he did for the club.

“Not many players receive that type of accolade and it says a lot about our fans that they really take to heart people who have done a good job for the club.

“Their support is incredible and I am mightily impressed that we will have close to 3,000 people up at Newcastle for a game that hasn’t got so much riding on it as other matches.”
