Olsson happy to give up captaincy

Albion defender Jonas Olsson is hoping to give up the captaincy when he plays his 100th game for the club at Molineux on Sunday.

The Sweden international will clock up a century of appearances for Albion in Sunday’s high-noon showdown with relegation-threatened Wolves.

But, despite his pride at skippering the side to derby victory over Villa last weekend, Olsson hopes regular captain Chris Brunt returns from a hamstring injury to reclaim the armband.

The centre-back said: “I am hoping he will be back because he is a major player for us and the type of character you need in a derby.

“It was a great honour to lead the team out at the Hawthorns on Saturday but Brunt is a very good captain.

“He always leads by example and is a top guy to be around but if I can step into his shoes in his absence I will always be honoured and happy to do so.

“It was a great feeling and a great honour.”

The Swede is set to continue his partnership with Abdoulaye Meite in defence on Sunday, after boss Roy Hodgson brought the Ivory Coast international in from the cold following his appointment in February.

And Olsson today praised the reaction of his fellow centre-half to scoring a bizarre early own-goal against Villa.

He said: “I was very impressed with Meite’s performance after the goal and that showed what type of character he is.”
