Albion boss wants to buy top players

Albion boss Roy Hodgson has outlined his “quality over quantity” vision for the club’s summer transfers.

The head coach is targeting players who will make his current squad “sit up and take notice” as he prepares for a second successive top-flight season.

And the Baggies boss is happy to focus Albion’s summer transfer kitty on a small number of high-quality recruits, instead of a major overhaul of the squad he inherited from Roberto Di Matteo.

Hodgson said: “That’s how it should be for me. I would happier if we get players that will come in and make everyone else sit up and look over their shoulder and worry about their places in the first team, rather than just bringing in players who fill up the numbers.”

With Albion virtually guaranteed another season in the Premier League after reaching 40 points, Hodgson is hoping for talks with chairman Jeremy Peace in the next few weeks to discuss his plans for strengthening the squad.

But, after holding meetings with sporting director Dan Ashworth already, the Hawthorns chief already has a clear vision for establishing the Baggies as a top-flight club.

Hodgson said: “I haven’t had a chance to talk to the chairman about it and I don’t want to say too much until I’ve had a chance to talk to him.

“At the moment, we have spoken internally among the coaching staff and Dan Ashworth about plans and ideas but, if it was up to me, I would not want to make any wholesale changes.

“Some changes will be necessary, because I’m certain some players will leave us and leave gaps behind that have to be filled.

“But I haven’t had chance to talk to the chairman about it yet, so we will have to wait and see what his thoughts on the matter are.”

Hodgson was today stepping up preparations for Saturday’s derby against Villa ,with a final decision due on whether Steven Reid’s calf problem will allow him to play.

Albion have fewer than 1,000 tickets left with the Smethwick End and East Stand both sold out.

Seats for Birmingham Road End and West Stand are on sale only to supporters listed on the club’s database.

“….if it was up to me, I would not make any wholesale changes”.

I might be being mischievous, but err, it is up to you isn’t it Roy?? Perhaps he’s speaking in terms of not knowing the finalised budget outline as opposed to having transfers dictated to him.

“Players to make everyone else sit up, look over their shoulders and worry about their place in the first team”

Wolves fans will be relieved, that rules out cherry-picking any of their players……

Sounds good to me – we know we have the nucleus of a decent squad – and we only need a couple of additions to take us forward at this stage.

I think Cech may leave, along with either Tamas or pablo, and possibly either Carson or Myhill, plus Vela, so a striker (maybe 2) and a left back and keeper would seem to be priorities – whether we buy or make good loan deals remains to be seen.

I can’t wait to see St Peter after a proper pre seasson and a fit Dorrens back to his best next year – plus Mulumbu will just get better and better !!!!

    1) Why? Peace has made monies available for EVERY manager at some point, how that manager chooses to spend it is down to him, if Roy chooses to spend £3-6 million on one class player, rather than half dozen fringe players, that’s down to him.

Now it seems that we have all but secured another season in the prem, us Albion fans will be nervous in the close / transfer period. All too often when something good has happened, something bad overshadows it. I am praying that we hold on to our prized assets and build around them. This is the only way to progress. If not, then we will be cast into the unknown with replacement players that may not cut it. Common sense to reward the best that have got us to where we are!!

Even so, I still think, for good or evil, that we’ll stay up, just because I think West Brom and Blackburn are a guaranteed six points, we’ll nick something on Sunday, hey presto, 42 points and safety.

    1) I am assuming you are not a WBA fan. I truly get annoyed with any “anti” Peace comments.

Our chairman has transformed the club, delivered financial stability and through his managerial “visionary” appointments, a number of successes (numerous promotion campaigns, FA Cup Semi Final etc).

His negotiation skills are legendary and he should seriously consider helping the United Nations out with negotiations on the side!! I mean how on earth we re-couped the £3.5m for Nathan Ellington, £6m for Kamara, £4m for Greening etc etc is beyond belief!!

Appointing Hodgson was genius, we have reached 40 points, Hodgson will now have the summer to review and strengthen the squad and if we could get a top 10 finish next season, that would be fantastic. I truly support quality over quantity and believe me,no player will leave the Hawthorns without us receiving a ridiculous transfer fee.

With Hodgson, Peace and Co, we are headed towards Premier League stability without risking the future of our club financially and the WBA executive team should have nothing but our thanks and admiration!

I’m not going into this again, I’ve bored enough people with this in the past, but do yourself a favour and read the accounts, ‘Wages and Salaries’ takes up about 70% of it, it does with every football club.

Then ask yourself how we bought Carson, Myhill, Zuiverloon, Jara, Haas, Hoefkens, Gregan, Marshall, Gaardsoe, Barnett, Meite, Olsson, Robinson, Cech, Shorey, Morrison, Brunt, Koumas, Valero, Gera, Greening, Moore, Miller, Odemwingie, Fortune, Hughes, Horsfield, Earnshaw, Ellington, Cox etc etc etc. We spent £11m in Mowbray’s first season (in the Championship) and £23m the year after.

I’m not saying JP’s not tight or that he doesn’t make decent money out of the club (no more than the top-paid players), but he hasn’t got £20m sitting in a bank. The independently audited accounts tell us we’re roughly breaking even when every club around us isn’t. Give the bloke a bit of credit. You mention 10 years ago, where were we then?

I can sympathise with your dilemma-

tomorrow morning, when you look at the Baggies squad going through their training session,I can see you scratching your head, and saying to yourself-

‘where on earth am I going to find players better than THESE guys? I’ve had some challenges over the years, but to improve on these lads is mission impossible.
Maybe now that I’ve realised my life’s ambition of managing West Brom,I should just retire.

Once you’ve reached the top, there’s nowhere else to go’.

So if anyone does watch the next training session,as soon as Roy scratches his head, just watch his lips.

Very good sense from Andy, 11, and Warren, 20.

We can only spend what we earn – and just look at the once powerful clubs which forgot this simple formula.

Take our Midlands area alone: Derby County, Leicester City, Coventry City, Nottingham Forest… Then there’s Sheffield Wednesday, once so powerful, but now so weak. Leeds? Their finances remain a total mystery, even as they struggle to get in to the play-offs. But nothing can beat poor Bradford, languishing in the fourth division, after wages of £40,000 a week when they were in the premiership. And if Bolton were to go down? Current debts of £93 million according to accounts published just before Christmas. Their gates are no bigger than ours. There is no way they can begin to service this debt without Sky gold. If West Ham go down this year, even the chairman tells us it will be “financial Armageddon.”

We’ve not made many mistakes in purchases or sales in the last ten years. Zuiverloon, perhaps, but he looked a world beater when he joined us. We’ve clearly lost on Barnett and Moore, too. But, against that, there were draw-dropping profits on the injury-prone Curtis Davis and the strange Kamara. Biggest transfer mistake of all? Tony Mowbray, who let Kevin Phillips go, when the chairman was willing to sign him on for a further two years. JP took the manager’s advice.

So don’t be negative and keep on lamenting “lack of ambition.” There is ambition aplenty, in getting good players in for sensible prices and on sane wages. These are good times.

The fact that this hasn’t happened, and we’re approaching the end,has affected them in different ways-either quietly sulking,or turning nasty, and bearing their teeth.

If they want to come over here and try winding us up,personally,I either aim to slap them down,or string them along for fun,but in truth I originally came here just to find the latest Baggie news,so I’d prefer it if we didn’t get ‘intrusions’ from outside.

The rivalry can be entertaining, but it can also turn nasty, and in reality it should be fun,so we could do without the unpleasant side of things.
