Tottenham 2 Albion 2

Saturday 23rd April 2011, 5:09PM BST.

Tottenham 2 Albion 2

Simon Cox’s fantastic first Premier League goal with nine minutes left sent Albion to the 40-point mark.

The Baggies substitute looped a brilliant shot over Tottenham goalkeeper Huerelho Gomes to rescue a battling point for his side.

Spurs had led through Roman Pavlyuchenko and Jermain Defoe, after Peter Odemwingie’s 13th goal of the season had put Roy Hodgson’s men ahead on five minutes

Albion made a dream start and had already gone close before taking the lead, Jerome Thomas striding forward and sending a shot just wide.

But they took the lead with just five minutes on the clock when Carlos Vela, who was handed his second Baggies start in place of James Morrison, burst down the left.

Vela found Odemwingie with a crossfield pass and the striker shrugged off Benoit Assou-Ekotto, before bending a shot around Michael Dawson and into the bottom corner past Gomes.

The Baggies kept the home side at arm’s length until the 17th minute, when Youssouf Mulumbu fouled Roman Pavlyuchenko and William Gallas headed just over from Rafael van der Vaart’s free-kick.

And the hosts had another chance moments later thanks to PFA player of the year Gareth Bale, who had switched to left-back following an injury to Assou-Ekotto.

Bale burst forwards on the overlap and crossed for Pavlyuchenko but the striker failed to make a clean contact with his header six yards out.

The pressure was mounting and Tottenham were level on 27 minutes.

Chris Brunt attempted to dispossess Tom Huddlestone in midfield and the ball broke kindly for Pavlyuchenko, who curled a shot past goalkeeper Scott Carson and in off the post.

There was another great chance for the hosts when a cross-shot from van der Vaart was parried well by Carson but the rebound dropped for Pavlyuchenko, who fired over from just inside the box.

Albion were grateful for the half-time interval and they could have been ahead six minutes after the restart when they broke well and Nicky Shorey’s cross found Odemwingie.

His header was arrowing in but Gomes pulled off a fantastic save.

But, on 67 minutes, they fell behind as the pressure told with Defoe claiming his 100th Tottenham goal.

The Baggies backed off, inviting him to shoot, and the striker made no mistake, finding the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

There were half-hearted penalty appeals from the visitors moments later as Vela found space on the left and picked out substitute James Morrison, whose shot appeared to strike the arm of Michael Dawson in the box.

With 10 minutes remaining the Baggies went close when Brunt send a long-range effort just wide.

But Cox struck just a minute later, receiving a pass from Shorey, side-stepping William Gallas and looping a fabulous shot over Gomes and into the top corner.

Then, in stoppage time, Odemwingie went close with a long-range shot that hit the side netting.

Fantastic performance away, to a glittering array of Spurs expensive talent. Wish Thomas would put his foot down and leave his marker for dead, he has the pace to do that. Carson was solid, Osaze was magical again. Cox, I’m as pleased as punch for him, what a cracker. Super substitutions from Roy, Jara (pronounced Harra) was brilliant when he came on. Also Brunt worked like a Trogan to preserve our point in the latter part of the game. Magical forty points in the bag, Now to make dead sure. Every man stood up to be counted. Chuffed.

Just so proud of the players and the club…. to match a team like Spurs who were desperate for a win for a top 4 place and to get a well deserved point just shows what this team is capable of… We drew at Old Trafford (still ther only club to take points there this season), beat Arsenal away, beat Liverpool at home – and done all those things with great football… just a really proud baggie.

A bit scared to start talking about we could achieve next season – but with Uncle Roy I believe we can really take things forward.

The game was on live over here.
Fantastic performance from the lads and two wonderful strikes from Odemwingie and Cox.

We could have won it too had the referee given a penalty for handball from Morrison’s shot and a great save by Gomes from Odemwingie’s header.

Spurs had a lot of possession but didn’t really threaten us. Their two goals were both shots from outside the box. We could have probably done a better job of closing them down, if I’m being overly critical.

Playing Vela with Odemwingie basically meant we were playing a 4-4-2 formation and this is why Spurs had so much possession at times in midfield. Not going to criticise too much because Vela set up Odemwingie’s goal and fed Morrison for his chance but it does leave us a little exposed in midfield against the better teams, especially away from home.

JT was a little quiet today but otherwise a great team performance. Meite has been a revelation since Hodgson came in and Jara was class after he came on for Reid. One more win guarantees Premiership football next season and getting it against Villa next Saturday would be perfect.

Simon Cox has been patient and waited and stuck it out in B71 and not gone on loan. His reward has been the opportunities he has been given. His goal today was the perfect way to repay the faith shown in him. There are quite a few this season who have over achieved against expectations. Odemwinge we all know about but how good Olson, Sharner Mulumbu Shorey and others have been this season. We have won at Emirates, and stolen points at Man U and Spurs from losing positions. Thats 5 points away at teams who have reached the Champions league knock out stages. Brilliant. 40 points now. Probably need 3 more to be absolutely sure. Well done to all today. Still good to see BRW acknowledge that his mighty side were outplayed 60/40 on possession and twice as many shots on goal by the worst away team in the league.

Good news about Graham Dorrans ankle injury. Looks like there’s no need to rush him back this season. How different to Scott Parker at West Ham who looks like being patched up and pushed back into action before he’s ready.

On that subject, I said a while back that I hoped he would win the player of the year because of his attitude to the game. While I’m glad for the lad’s sake that he did, I can’t help feeling that if he’d played exactly the same for Wigan, Wolves, Blackburn or Blackpool he wouldn’t have got a sniff of it. Fantastic, I’ve got to agree with everything NY Baggie wrote.

Only gripe and this fits in with a few points above about the national media. In one particuarly big-selling red-top Sunday newspaper, Spurs were dominant throughout and the way they ‘carved us open’ at times was even more impressive than the fashion Chelsea managed it the week before. Pavlyuchenko missed an ‘open goal’ (the rebound which was anything but) and Bale repeatedly charged past Jara effortlessly……..!! I’m trying to be objective about this and I had a few before the game, but really?????

I’m a panicer at the best of times but at virtually no point in the last half hour did I think Spurs were likely to score other than perhaps a corner. They can have no argument that they did enough to win the game. 12 shots to 9 doesn’t reek of dominance and for me Jara was fantastic when he came on. How many times did Bale really get beyond him other than a bit of media hysteria? The entire report was written from Spurs’ perspective. Then again, should we expect anything else??

If anything, if the media continue to ignore us, then it probably means we get the luxury of hanging onto the magnificent Youssuf Mulumbu amongst others for that bit longer.

I posted on another thread some quick checking. I’ll post it here to see what you think.

Does anyone realise that anyone below Bolton in 8th could get relegated. Okay, it’s very unlikely that Newcastle would lose their last 4 games and the bottom 3 win theirs, but it just shows how close it is. We need, at this moment, another 6 points, but if we win on Saturday and the bottom three lose then we are theoretically safe. Wigan have Everton and West Ham have Man City (I wouldn’t like to predict those results). Wolves have Blues and we have Villa. Next week is going to be very interesting

With no one cast adrift at the bottom it means that the safe points target changes game by game. It’s currently 46, next week it could be 43 or still 46.

    As I’ve said…interesting.

If Scott Parker played for any other club other than the FA, media and showbiz darlings West Ham he would just be the same old average Scott Parker that played for Newcastle or Charlton. He hasn’t got any better by moving to West Ham, he just happens to be the best player they’ve got at the moment so naturally he gets an England call up. At least if they go down we might actually get some quality footballers in an England shirt.

Charletens, liars and morons. Best to do what I do mate and only read the local match reports on the computer. I’ve haven’t paid for a tabloid since one described our colours as ‘BLACK and white’.

As for the boys they were top notch once again. crackin goal from Cox and St Peter’s wasn’t bad either. Thier goals were quality as well so we can be happy defensivley. One more win and you can stick a fork in us.

Magnificent performance yet again from the Albion, what a strike by Cox too, great goal! It would take a very strange set of results between now and the end of the season for us to go down now, but let’s make sure now by beating the Vile on Saturday.

    We only need one half!

    53) I was at the Hawthorns the night we put Man City out the cup, Cox was immense that night, and you can just see he has the potential, blistering speed AND sublime skills, a rare commodity that only the very best achieve. I also believe Tchyoi is in the same mould, and will prove to be another star buy. Watch this space!

What a cretinous statement. He could’ve done nothing with either goal and made of couple of good saves. If anything, both goals came about through affording their deep-dropping strikers too much time in the hole. Have you any thoughts on Brunt’s contribution to their first, or is just about picking out Carson’s errors?

Roy said himself (or something along these lines), if you spend too much time thinking about the next rain cloud, you never have any time to enjoy the sunshine. Try and get yourself a bit of sun, Kev’s an expert, you might even enjoy it.

To all Carson and Kev in Mallorca knocker’s.
Some of you think that I’m a prat for my defence of Carson,my attacks on fellow supporters views, attacking Moaning Moron and trying to spread positive thinking, well can you understand now?
If he is one of us can you understand why MBOY has come out with that statement? I know this is an extreme cast but it’s how I see most Carson critics, jumping on the bandwagon because it’s fashionable and if their not moaning their not happy.

Please tell me all my hard work hasn’t been in vain and you agree that in this case Mboy is ether a Dingle or a nutcase.

Speaking up for Happy. I think he’s stated before that when he and others put posts like these on your site they are aimed at the Wulfies that infest this side pouring out bile, constantly telling us that despite the experience of the last 12 years you are better/bigger than us on a cosmic scale or using false names to try to stir up friction over here.

Rather than post over there I sometimes paste the outlandish posts of some of your intellectually challenged fans over here. This is because the likes of Laughing Wolf and brummierobwolves are more likely to see them on our site than their own.

Perhaps Happy shouldn’t do it but sometimes it takes the patience of a saint not to respond and yes I know some of ours do the same on your side but as a regular reader I can say it’s nothing like on the same scale.

So please cut him a bit of slack, I can vouch for the fact that his posts aren’t aimed at you or your like.

I think we’re only half in agreement. I think Scott Parker is a top player for his endeavor, his attitude, the fact that he always tries to stay on his feet and when he is fouled he gets straight up rather than rolling around trying to get a fellow player booked. A real throwback to the traditional British midfielder.

My gripe as you picked up on was that if he played for one of the other bottom clubs then the award would inevitably have gone to a Spurs or Man Ure player. I think Parker is way better than average.

Is mboy a name from the past? I can’t remember seeing him on here for a while. It says it all about the Carson knockers that we’re not sure if he’s a Wulfie or one of our own. When I first read it I thought he was one of us being ironic but I think Kev’s right and he’s a misguided soul proving the point I was making to Isle of Wight Wolves.

I’ve noticed mboy for a year or so. He/she doesn’t post regularly but it’s always a really sharp, negative swipe at the usual scapegoats e.g. JP, Carson etc. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed a positive one.

I must admit I find his/her posts puzzling and largely unconstructive and as such often take a swipe back. In fairness I did once manage to get a few follow-up posts with a bit of reasoning so I’m sure they’re actually a genuine poster. I just find it difficult to comprehend the thinking behind the one above.
